If at first you don’t succeed….Duck Dodgers pitch cover - This second attempt to sell Duck Dodgers as a television show in Oct. 1998, had Lola Bunny joining the crew, Sparky being reduced to a smaller role with Dodgers’ rival Star Johnson. John P. McCann was in charge of revamping this version of the show. He asked me and Tony Cervone to adapt the artwork to reflect this new direction.

Tom and Jerry & the Wizard of Oz (2011)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
I don't often give movies "So Bad It's Good" ratings. Even rarer are low “So Bad It’s Good” ratings. If a movie isn't good and isn't enjoyably awful, it probably isn't pleasant under any definition. I'm making an exception for Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz. Why? Well, it all began with Tom and Jerry and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; a film so bad you had to see it to believe it. No one in their right mind would rent or buy that cinematic mistake. All of its profits must have come from grandparents with poor eyesight desperate to find their grandkids a last-minute Christmas gift. After seeing it, no one would give any Tom and Jerry films - past or future - a chance but it's still available for purchase today. As long as Tom and Jerry and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is out there, the only audience for this… adaptation? Spoof? Follow-up? to the 1939 Judy Garland classic are demented cinephiles who purposely seek bad movies. Why aren’t they going to be pleased? Read on.
While reuniting Dorothy Gale (voiced by Grey Griffin) with her dog Toto, Tom and Jerry get sucked into a twister and transported to the magical land of Oz. Following Dorothy’s tracks on the yellow brick road, they meet munchkin Tuffy (voiced by Kath Soucie) who tells them of the great and powerful Oz (Joe Alaskey) - the only being who can help them return home.
Unlike Tom and Jerry and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this isn’t a straight retelling of the original film with the two violence-prone cat and mouse clumsily jammed in. This is an “original movie” with an original plot. It's sort of a Lion King 1 ½ type of story. We see familiar events from a new angle. For instance, did you ever wonder how that bucket of water ended up in the Wicked Witch of the West’s castle? You'll know its back story after this film. What’s that? You never cared? You shouldn't, and that's why this movie fails. This side story is razor thin. In fact, the whole thing clocks in at a slim 56 minutes - far less than the film it’s spinning off of. Unfortunately, since you don’t care about anything, it feels much longer.
This is a perfect example of a film that would be better if it were worse. The new songs are bad, but they’re lame, not cringe-inducing and not memorable. The animation is cheap. I only counted one scene in which a character had a shadow. However, the budget isn’t so low that characters are constantly off-model or animated in a way that makes for great stills. Similarly, since the plot is new, there are no plot holes or nonsensical developments like we had in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ripoff. This means there is less to make fun of and many more reasons to become bored.
This is a picture for a non-existent audience. No adult watching will go “I’d much rather watch this than the classic!” If you haven’t seen Dorothy Gale’s original adventure, you won’t understand this plot because it assumes you already know the story and blazes through important information. It isn’t good, and isn’t bad enough to be fun. There’s no reason to see this film and everyone who made it knew this perfectly well. I can’t think of any reason why anyone should ever see it but I also don’t hate it enough to care if you disagree. (On DVD, November 23, 2018)

So, I decided to rewatch Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, it's been 3 years since the last time I watched it, by now I am midway season 1, it has been a nice experience, I really appreciate the writers effort for trying to make a plot focused Scooby Doo show while keeping all the tropes the franchise is known for, and I keep wondering why someone at Warner Bros. haven't tried to give it a try on it again (Unless you count HBO'S Velma, but let's not talk about this, we all know how bad this show is).
But one thing that keeps coming back everytime I watch an episode of the series, is how in order for the series to work, the gang needs to be either out of character or very one note. Their dynamic is really weird because you have these two opposing forces on the series where in one hand they want us to root for their friendship and for them to stay together but at the same time when they are together they are this close 🤏 to split up and never see each other's faces again.
I kept remembering the 2002 live action movie where the gang has a similar dynamic, but there they at least have a reason for why they acted like that, they've been together for too long and can't stand each other anymore because every monster they find the same thing keeps happening, that's why they break up and keep acting completly rude and apathetic towards to each other. Here though, there really isn't a reason why, they know each other for a while, have solved some misteries by the time the show begins, but overall, they are just really toxic to each other, the prime example being the way they write Velma and Shaggy's relationship, I know that Tony Cervone has stated that this was because Velma is lesbian in the series, going through a compulsive heterosexual relationship but this is not enough to explain way her relationship with Shaggy is so messed up, with her trying to change how he talks, how he dresses, what he eats and the whole rivalry they pull out of nowhere between her and Scooby, I'm all for Velma being lesbian (Even tho I'm more of the Bi Velma team) but this really isn't the way to do it.
I stil like the show, but we all need to adress criticism when criticism is needed, specially when the show is often regarded as the best piece of midia in the franchise, and that could be a problem for new interpretations of the characters that have the same issues as the ones from SDMI.

I think irl and in canon ppl are baffled by what Bugs sees in Daffy, as if Daffy’s Mr. Wrong.
But…. It’s kinda switched once you think about it??
Yes, Daffy’s flaws tend to outshine his better qualities, but his friendliness and cheerfulness is overlooked. Like, he’s best friends with one of the most temperamental yet patient everyman there is! Daffy’s selfish, but he knows how to be part of a team. In both the meta and literal sense, he has the unparalleled ability to slips into various roles to accommodate a dynamic, and still be true to himself (Duck Twacy, Duck Dogers, Porky’s Husband friend or enemy, Danny Boy) His affectionate gestures are quite sincere compared to the rest of the tune cast. (and again, as a rule of thumb any sincerity is offset by a gag, so take that with a grain of salt) Bugs on the other hand, operates in a way that teamwork or camaraderie is out of the picture. Without trying, he dominates. He’s unreachable in ways that make it hard to be friendly with him, or engage in conversation without him (somehow) talking down to an audience. Have you noticed he has that air about him?? Even with his peers, he’s always on a pedestal. And Bugs has never been cast as anyone but himself… he’s inflexible.
Bugs can be at once, affectionate and manipulative. He’s very hard to read, and his few positive relationships make it unclear when he’s being honest or not. That’s not to say Bugs can’t be kind, generous or polite, I think compared to Daffy (and most tunes) he exhibits better etiquette. He’s more charming by design. Daffy, for better or worse, has no filter for his motivations or deeper emotions. He’s supposed to be relatable in that sense.
So what does Daffy see in Bugs?? Longtime WB producer and director Tony Cervone has stated multiple times that Bugs finds Daffy entertaining, his unpredictability fascinates him. (and further cements the insinuation that team ups have been initiated by Bugs, i.e, he pursues)
So, I think for Daffy, ironically, it’s complicated. It seems what draws him to Bugs, are also what he despises him for. Ok, the elephant in the room: Bugs models the qualities Daffy lacks. Stardom, adulation, effortless appeal, knowing what to say and when (tact is something Daffy desperately needs). It’s very easy to look up to Bugs, and as I said a couple posts ago, he once and (kinda??) still does. But, Daffy also has the hidden ability to being people to his level, and after spending enough time around Bugs I think he recognizes he’s not as untouchable as he (and his audience) makes himself out to be. Bugs is the type of person who masks imperfection well. Fortunately, Daffy’s drawn to mystery (in canon and in his roles in shorts), so I can see him quietly trying to investigate the parts of Bugs that never reaches public eyes, like a case study. So, is this a positive or negative draw?? it depends on Bugs’ attitude and Daffy’s mood. I guess it can be said that the fascination is mutual, Bugs is entertained by Daffy and Bugs gets under Daffy’s skin.
And of course, we CAN’T ignore the surface level of Bugs’ appeal to Daffy. Bugs’ generosity gives Daffy many opportunities to exercise his materialism and lavish lifestyle. He gets free dinners, Bugs covers all their vacations, and (a big plus for Daffy) he doesn’t mind relinquishing treasures and fortune when they come across it. Don’t call Daffy a gold digger don’t call Daffy a gold digger don’t
So yeah, I went off on a tangent but I hope I cleared up the misconception that Daffy’s Mr. Wrong, both of them—Bugs even more so— are the ‘odd’ choice.
This clear up doesn’t help paint their relationship in a healthy light. There’s ulterior motives and mutual selfishness, but I believe there’s never a fundamental misunderstanding of the other. If they were both more introspective, they’d find to their horror no one understands them the way they do each other. For two stars with excruciatingly large egos, that’s probably the best and worst quality of their weird relationship, ‘being known’, haha.

It’s crazy how people use the Scooby doo and Supernatural crossover and Mystery Incorporated as proof that Velma couldn’t be a lesbian cause she flirted with Sam in the special and in Incorporated Velma dated Shaggy briefly
🙄 Guys I’m begging y’all to be fucking for real. Lesbians are still LESBIANS even when they had past romantic relationships with men.
Velma has been coded queer for awhile now, James Gunn in the live action Scooby Doo wanted to write a lesbian Velma in the script but Warner Bros. didn’t want to use that. Tony Cervone confirmed that in the series “Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated,”Velma is a lesbian but he was unable to show it in the series and he had plans on making Velma and Marcie (Hotdog Water) become an official couple.
So, for “Trick Or Treat Scooby-Doo!” to showcase that yes, Velma is a lesbian, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

STOP SINGING MYSTERY INCORPORATED’S PRAISES
THE FEMALE CHARACTERS INCLUDING VELMA ARE SO SO BADLY WRITTEN BECAUSE THE WRITERS JUST COULDN’T FATHOM THE IDEA THAT A WOMAN CAN EXIST WITHOUT HER WHOLE PERSONALITY AND MOTIVES REVOLVING AROUND A MAN.
Velma? Spends most of the series either in a relationship with Shaggy or recovering from it, in which shes both emotionally and physically abusive (she tells him to snap a band against his arm every time he thinks about food, and even snaps it herself clearly in a way that hurts him)
Daphne? Spends the whole series pining over Fred and ignoring all his boundaries
Angel is a little less bad, but she still falls into the stereotype of “black character who exists mainly to encourage and help out white protagonists”, but then the moment she becomes a tiny bit relevant in season two, along a man for her to revolve around.
Marcy doesn’t have a man to revolve around and oh boy does she get punished for it. Every character hates her, sure Velma warms up to her later in the series but initially she hates her more than anyone else. She’s constantly referred to by a mean nickname which originates from the fact shes TOO POOR TO AFFORD CLEAN WATER. And we as the audience are supposed to just support that unwarranted hatred. And then when her and Velma do grow closer it happens basically entirely offscreen, and is soon followed by Velma turning her back on Marcy in favour of Mystery Inc. Then she’s basically gone for most of the series until she comes back at the very end to be killed off, as most queer/queercoded characters in media are.
And the unarguable proof that her and Velma are actually dating? Happens when the timeline is reset to where mysteries basically don’t exist and as Velma again leaves her for Mystery Inc she says “thats my girl” a pretty common expression.
And then the creator turns around and basically goes “We made it as clear as possible, you just didn’t pay close enough attention.”
FUCK Mystery Incorporated and FUCK Tony Cervone for thinking he did a good job on that shit. Now go enjoy Trick Or Treat Scooby Doo as it does Lesbian Velma justice.

Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz (2016)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
When I saw Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I saw unintentional comedic gold. The shoehorned cat and mouse created plot holes, the crappy animation made for many meme-worthy frames, plus it was just so out-of-nowhere the very title made me laugh. What was next Tom and Jerry and Kramer vs. Kramer? Tom and Jerry and Me, Myself & Irene? I couldn't wait to see Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz but it disappointed me. It’s a film made worse by being better, which is also very much the case for this sequel.
Following her return to Kansas after her adventure in the wonderful land of Oz, Dorothy Gale (voiced by Grey Griffin) learns the farm’s livestock is about to be forfeited to Mr. Bibb (Jason Alexander) unless the family repays their debt to him. Worse, the Nome King (also Jason Alexander) has attacked the Emerald City and threatens to sink it so he can reclaim its emeralds. Rejoined by her friends The Scarecrow (Michael Gough), The Cowardly Lion (Todd Stashwick), The Tinman (Rob Paulsen), her faithful dog Toto… and Tom and Jerry, Dorothy must stop this new threat to the kingdom and save the farm too.
Much like its predecessor, it’s hard to pinpoint who this film is for. “Wizard of Oz” fans may get a kick out of seeing some of the books’ less well-known elements, like the Jitterbug (James Monroe Iglehart, whose character was originally meant to appear in the 1939 classic but was ultimately cut) and the Nome King. I'd wager they'd rather watch Return to Oz, or read the books instead. It’d be different if the animation was good but it’s just ok. At its worst, it's bad without ever becoming so bad it’s hilarious. What a shame. The end credits show some pre-production stills and animatics in which the characters ARE consistently on-model and look nice. Clearly, this was a production made as cheaply and quickly as possible.
Assuming Tom and Jerry fans are interested in seeing the characters interact with L. Frank Baum’s creations, they'll find a  few decent gags here. They’re nothing special but these laughs prevent this creation from becoming painful. I guess you can also appreciate that as a sequel, this is “good” in the sense that, unlike so many other Oz sequels, we actually get to see the characters we liked the first time around come back. Well, not ALL of them. Thankfully, the irritating Tuffy (Kath Soucie) is kept to a minimum this time.
The songs are so bland and unmemorable I nearly forgot to mention them. The best bits of music is another rendition of Over the Rainbow which you’d trade in for a recording of Judy Garland’s any day of the week. That's all I've got to say about that.
Overall, Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz is betterrrr (?) than the first but not by much. It still struggles to validate its existence. This is the kind of movie you only end up watching because your grandma bought it for you at the gas station because she thought it was your birthday and forgot that you’re now a grown man. I didn’t hate it but would be hard-pressed to find anyone I'd recommend it to. (On DVD, February 8, 2019)

Velma of “Scooby-Doo” confirmed as a lesbian
Tumblr media
After years of creators trying to get Warner Bros. to let them portray her as such, Velma - of Scooby-Doo - has been confirmed as being into girls with the latest animated movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, which is out now on digital platforms and running periodically on Cartoon Network.
She experiences what can only be described as a sexual awakening upon meeting fashion designer Coco Diablo, and she falls hard.
It’s been kind of an open secret with the character for a while, with James Gunn - writer of the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film - and Tony Cervone - supervising producer of Mystery Incorporated - both attempting to confirm her sexuality in their takes but ultimately being overruled by the studio.

Note
Yeah, WB just recently shelved a Scoob sequel movie and Tony Cervone, the director of the Scoob sequel, was very devastated that it got scrapped. He said the project ALMOST completed. He even said the Scooby Doo movie was his baby and he was so dedicated to the project. I do feel bad for Tony Cervone. Scooby Doo is a good animated franchise and WB just scraps Tony Cervone's project like that. That's not fair.
While I certainly feel for Mr. Cervone, I must admit I have personal beef with the Scoob movie for never contscting the OG voice actors and instead replacing them with generic Celebrities. Even Frank Welker got replaced by Zac Efron for Fred. I mean, he did get to play the dog, but. Fred. Come on.
While I'm personally not disappointed about that particular loss, it is just more of WB making bad financial decisions. Like releasing it will likely never be as much of a loss as canceling it when it's almost done. You could potentially do enough DVD sales and TV & streaming service syndication to at least break even.
