Kamala Harris' Was Spared This Question During Her Trainwreck Interview on CNN
Tumblr media
The interview was a trainwreck. It was also encased in bubble wrap, and the vice president still fell flat on her face. The optics were also terrible, with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz looking like he was either Kamala Harris’ attorney or a crutch. You can’t leave her alone—that’s what this looked like. Portions of the transcript showed host Dana Bash answering the questions for Harris, along with word salads that provide her camp’s reasoning behind keeping the VP in the bunker. Harris was unrepentant about hiding Joe Biden’s mental health decline.
Television is mostly about visuals. Whoever set up this visual is terrible at their job. Bad lighting, makeup, hair, color choice, Walz's collar askew, angle making Kamala look small, water cup center shot, off the rack poorly fitting suit... this whole thing just looks bad. pic.twitter.com/6KqlthfuKn— Ben Domenech (@bdomenech) August 30, 2024

CNN’s interviewer couldn’t keep herself from telling Harris how to answer the question while asking the question. And Harris still couldn’t manage to give a coherent answer. https://t.co/8BxzSWqgi5— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) August 29, 2024
The California liberal wants to turn the page on the past decade. Sorry, Kamala, you’re the incumbent. What does that even mean? And why are you treating voters with such contempt—they’re not that stupid. Harris is the vice president of the United States. She’s already in the White House:

Des Jeux Paralympiques populaires (1)
Tumblr media

The Tokyo 2021 Olympics Are in Trouble
The International Olympic Committee and the Japanese government believe that the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo are actually too massive to fail. However, failure is always an option. Covid-19 cases are on the rise in Japan, with fewer than 100 days before the scheduled onset. Anger regarding the Games is also on the rise in Japan, with the hashtag #CancelOlympics circulating on Twitter last week. According to a new survey, more than seven in ten Japanese citizens do not want the Olympics to take place this summer, with 39 percent choosing an immediate suspension and another 33 percent preferring further postponement.
Tumblr media
And certain political leaders seem to be vacillating. Toshihiro Nikai, Secretary-General of the governing Liberal Democratic Party, said on Japanese television, "If it becomes unlikely, it should be called off." What is the point of the Olympics if it is liable for the transmission of diseases?” The Japanese Communist Party's Akira Koike said the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be "impossible." The need for the Olympics to be canceled is increasing.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympic supporters have been behaving like blinkered greyhounds following a mechanical bunny across the racetrack. President of the Tokyo Organizing Committee, Seiko Hashimoto, has insisted that the Games will take place. Hashimoto, who recently took over the job after previous president Yoshiro Mori was fired for overt misogyny, admitted "a lot of issues," but added, "As the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, we are not considering canceling the games." Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has maintained that, considering the increase in Covid-19 cases in Japan, there has been “no shift in the government stance to do anything to ensure a healthy and successful Olympics.” Sugahas repeated the International Olympic Committee's flimsy proclamation that the Tokyo Olympics was "a sign of optimism to the country" and "the illumination at the end of the tunnel."
Tumblr media
Here come the public health experts. Kazuki Shimizu, Devi Sridhar, Kiyosu Taniguchi, and Kenji Shibuya wrote in a scathing essay published in the scholarly journal The BMJ, “Plans to hold the Olympic and Paralympic games this summer must be reconsidered as a matter of urgency.” The entire human population understands the urgency of containing the pandemic and saving lives. Holding Tokyo 2020 for domestic political and economic reasons thus dismissing science and spiritual imperatives is incompatible with Japan's contribution to public health and human security.”
In Japan, fewer than 1% of the populace has been vaccinated, with just 0.4 percent receiving two doses of the vaccine. To make it worse, Japan's populace is generally wary of vaccines. According to a survey published in The Lancet, Japan has one of the lowest levels of vaccine trust in the world: fewer than 10% of those polled firmly accepted that vaccinations are secure.
Meanwhile, in the midst of a spike of cases in Japan, the government is pouring more funds into the Olympics—and the Games' expenses are now four times greater than their initial $7.3 billion estimate (that's almost $30 billion, a remarkable amount by Olympic standards, rivaled only by their Chinese neighbors). The Olympic Minister of Japan has openly recommended that Olympic competitors be checked on a regular basis during the Games. According to Japanese media sources, Olympic organizers have reserved about 300 hotel rooms for Olympians who test positive for coronavirus symptoms, at an expense of millions of dollars. All of this comes after the Japanese government sparked eyebrows by inconveniently suspending the state of emergency order just days before the Olympic Torch Relay began. The government then placed a month-long "quasi-emergency" order on Tokyo earlier this month, even as the torch relay continues to wind its way across the region.
“People in Japan understood that the lifting of the state of emergency came too fast, and the sight of the torch relay has disturbed many,” Satoko Itani, a professor at Kansai University, told The Country. “To add insult to injury, many Japanese medical personnel are also searching for the vaccination. Vaccination of the aged has just just began and is most certainly not be finished until the start of the Olympics. Hospitals in Japan are being overcome by the increasingly growing number of COVID patients.” Itani said, "It is impossible not to recognize that the attempt to contain the Covid-19 virus in Japan has been seriously compromised or sacrificed as a result of the Olympics." People often recognize that while there seem to be an infinite number of services accessible for organizing the Olympics, there are very little available to save people's lives and livelihoods in Japan.”
In certain ways, the Japanese people have come around to the viewpoint of anti-Olympics campaigners in Tokyo and around the world: the Games do not take place. Natsuko Sasaki, who was born and raised in Japan, told us, "It is significant that so many Japanese citizens have heard how the invincible Olympic machine functions." Sasaki, who now resides in France and is a part of the anti-Olympics party NON aux JO 2024 à Paris, added that the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics have not yet appeared on the general public's radar due to the predominance of coronavirus coverage in the French media, but that the current fiasco in Tokyo could change that.
What is clear is that perhaps the most zealous Olympic coverage boosters would hail the 2020 Games as a sign of optimism. Far from it; they have been a shrine of excess and waste in the sense of a pandemic where services are urgently required. If the condition in Tokyo stays the same or worsens, there will be a backlash against these Games, and the revolt will reverberate in Paris and Los Angeles, the locations of the next two Summer Games. Tokyo's determination to hold the Games even though it means exacerbating the pandemic increases the risks sharply for Olympic supporters and protesters alike.

Extinguish the Olympic Torch! Transnational Anti-Olympics Joint Statement
日本語
français

Tumblr media
On March 25, 2021, the Olympic torch relay starts at J-Village in Fukushima, where the Great East Japan Earthquake hit and Daiichi Nuclear Plant failed a decade ago. Japan is still dealing with the pandemic and 80% of the public opposes the Games in July, according to any recent poll, for fear of a “super-spreading event”. In this climate, the Organizing Committee of “Tokyo 2020” announced the barring of spectators from overseas except the IOC families and their “corporate friends”, but hasn’t yet decided to cancel the Games.
The Olympic torch relay, invented by Carl Diem and Joseph Goebbels for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, is promoted as a sign of ‘hope’ to ‘overcome’ this uncertain time. In addition to the torch relay, Fukushima is scheduled to hold both baseball and softball games for Tokyo Olympic 2020. While Tokyo Olympic 2020 is touted as ‘Recovery Olympics’, it had nothing to do with the “reconstruction” from its origin: the bidding was a nationalistic political program of the far-right governor of Tokyo since 2006 (Tokyo lost the bid for the 2016 Games). After the natural and human disasters that happened in 2011, Japanese rulers decided to sustain the Olympic bidding project. This clearly signifies that the decision was a political motive to normalize the tragedy and catastrophe. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) endorsed such action by the Japanese government by electing Tokyo Olympic 2020. The departure of the Olympic torch from Fukushima is proof of this enterprise.
Meanwhile, radiation hotspots were found near the Fukushima Olympic site, confirming that the area is not “recovered.” The Olympics itself has been the obstacle for the actual recovery of Fukushima taking away all the labor and other resources. JOC and the organizers are using “Tokyo 2020” as a way to greenwash a national tragedy. The actual recovery from contamination will take time, and for Fukushima residents, this battle feels endless and hopeless.
The general public’s opposition to the Olympics was also present in Rio 2016, however the games were held despite the popular uprising. It is clear the IOC, the government and other Olympic related committees do not care what the public wants. Anti-Olympics groups like us exist in every host city, and continue to grow as the games are scheduled in Paris and Los Angeles. Despite the pandemic, the Olympic machine has barreled forward, displacing people in need, razing public housing and parks, implementing new security theater, destroying iconic cultural landmarks, greenwashing their outdated vision and incurring a mountain of public debt. This happens not only in Tokyo, but every host city.
We, anti-Olympics, anti-gentrification and anti-surveillance groups from all over the world, demand the extinction of the Olympic flame of Tokyo and beyond. We believe that many other things including public health deserve our attention more than such an ephemeral and mercantile spectacle.

Stop Playing Games: Our Demands
Tumblr media
日本語 한국어 Français
In the last few weeks, we have witnessed the ruling class scramble to respond to the escalating global pandemic and cling to their profit margins as millions of lives are on the line. The IOC’s faltering decision to “postpone” the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games is yet another example of how politicians, corporations, real estate speculators, and other entities driving the Olympic machine operate with indemnity. The Japanese government repeatedly declared in March that the torch relay and the Summer Olympics would be held exactly as planned, while delaying vital measures to protect Japanese residents at risk – all in the name of preserving the Olympic Games. Once the decision to “postpone” was finally announced, the number of cases in Japan surged, indicating that they had also been suppressing testing and concealing information from the public. This is all part of the Olympic legacy of putting private profit above human life. Now more than ever, reform and negotiation with these monied, powerful interests is not in any of our best interests.
The status quo only has two “solutions” to offer in the face of this crisis, or any crisis, both of which only serve to protect elites’ interest and perpetuate further harm. The first is to enhance the security state in the short-term as fear builds, and then the second is to push capitalist development on steroids in the long-term to claim “recovery.” The Olympic Games are the perfect vehicle to deliver both of these “solutions” to our cities and communities, which will wreak further havoc on top of the damage already done by the bidding process, preparations to host, and now, the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are calling on the IOC and all Olympic organizing committees to STOP PLAYING GAMES. In short, this entails canceling (not postponing) all planned Olympics, taking the resources that are currently being siphoned towards these bloated games, and redistributing them towards the people in our cities and communities who are struggling to survive.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are already massively over budget, coming in at approximately $25 billion (~$20B over budget). The budget for the LA 2028 Olympics is nearly $7 billion and Paris currently sits at $8 billion – both of which are expected to rise significantly. In the age of this global pandemic, Olympic budgets are the ultimate expression of hoarding resources, regardless of how they’re funded to begin with. How many lives could be saved with that money as this pandemic rages? Using these funds for anything other than addressing the urgent, basic needs of our families and neighbors is unthinkable. Using them for a mega-event that will further exploit our cities and kill the poorest residents is genocidal.
Instead, these billions of dollars should be applied to the following priorities:
Disaster Recovery
As the climate crisis continues to ravage our cities, we demand reparations and relief for victims of disasters like the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, typhoons in Japan, and wildfires in California. This includes housing for people who have been displaced, medical care for people who are affected by radiation and other long-term effects, mental healthcare for people who are experiencing long-term trauma, and economic relief for people who lost income or their source of income.
Decommodification of Public Goods
The Olympics are one piece of a larger effort to privatize public space and financialize our basic human needs. We demand the immediate socialization of education, healthcare, housing, utilities, and transportation in our cities wherever these public goods are not already under public control. This includes reclaiming now-vacant hotels and short-term rental units for social housing. These are the things we need to support human life and prosperity in general, and recovery from the COVID-19 specifically – not an enhanced security state or ramped up real estate development.
Defund Police and Military
The biggest line item for every Olympic budget is typically security. For the London 2012 Olympics the security budget ballooned to over $1.6 billion. Tokyo has been spending an undisclosed but likely astronomical amount of money on new mass surveillance and facial recognition technology for the Olympics. We demand that every penny designated for brutalizing our cities’ poorest residents in the same of “Olympic security” be redirected to the service of basic human needs. We have seen in this crisis that when millions of human lives are at stake, the people on the front-lines saving lives and risking their own are not the police or military but workers.
