#Transformers Aligned Continuity

TFP might be flawed but it will always have my heart.

I literally can not put into words how important this show is to me. Sure, some of the storylines and themes (and occasionally characterization) were not well written (looks at parts of s2 and s3), but the show has great ideas and heart. I love how mature it was and how it did not shy away from showing the pain of the war on its characters. I love how these characters rose from their pain to become better versions of themselves; how the victories were earned and how we, the audience, cheered when they happened. I love how Optimus was always committed his ideals, especially to the idea of change- that everyone was capable of it. How, despite all the struggles and loss of hope, he was right in the end. The story itself was wrapped in such a satisfying way- the Predacons Rising movie was flawed but the ending… I will defend with my entire soul that the ending of TFP is ONE of the BEST conclusions to a Transformers story in the entire franchise.

This was the second Transformers show I watched and is why I became a Transformers fan. I started watching this show during one of the worst periods of my life and it’s one of my comfort shows. I was in freshman year in college, lonely and depressed from being far away from home and trying to adjust to a new life during the pandemic. Ridiculous as it is, the show gave me hope, to continue fighting, that things will get better.

I might be overly emotional, but hearing the TFP theme in TFO made me tear up. Everytime I hear the part of the TFP letimotif in the movie theme, I think about the show and how it helped me. I think about the impact it has and will continue to have on the entire franchise and a generation of fans.

So, TFP will always have a part of my heart.

Am I wrong to think that the Dinobot reference in S3E5 blowes a huge hole in the idea that that Prime is connected to the Cybertron games?

In my mind, Optimus didn’t reject the offer of once again becoming Cybertron's leader solely on a selfless and sober understanding:"I am a leader of warriors, not government". There was another, stronger reason for him to do so.

Being a Prime wasn't truly his choice. It was put on him to carry. Although he dutifully and sincerely grew into it, performing all that was expected of him and beyond. But he took it never without hesitation.

In being a Prime, he had to make many sacrifices, some very personal. He had to put his own needs, desires, and feelings far behind in favor of many others' well-being and happiness. He even had made the ultimate sacrifice TWICE.

His rejection at the end of RID was him finally putting himself first and enjoying life for himself for the first time in eons. It was him LIVING for the first time.

I'd like to think he managed to find a wide-sprawling plain shortly after that, where he laughed maniacally, doing a little stupid jig, thinking: "No way in hell am I going back to doing that shit, mwehehehe".

Sunstreaker made a Magnificent Six reference in Transformers: Retribution, oh yeah!!! ...Actually I don't really think the Magnificent Six's story would really work transplanted into the Aligned continuity but still... excited to see the team referenced in something it like almost never ever is

I know this is a longer video but I love the novel Transformers Exodus by Alex Irvine and love how he wrote Optimus and Megatron's friendship in the book, so here's a look at some passages in the book to explore this tragic friendship-turned-mortal-enemy relationship! 😁👍

Similarities between Transformers One and the Aligned Continuity (aka Transformers: Prime) 

Watching the trailers and reading the interviews made me realize that there are many similarities between TF One and the Aligned Continuity. As a reminder (or for those who don't know)- the Aligned Continuity consisted of the War for Cybertron games, Transformers: Prime, Robots in Disguise, Rescue Bots, etc.

Transformers: Prime got me into the fandom, so it's interesting to see a multi-million-dollar movie use elements from the continuity it is a part of.

Here is a list of similarities I have found so far. 

Note: I'll also be mentioning IDW1 briefly since the Aligned continuity and IDW1 comics have similar concepts and have constantly exchanged ideas with each other.

Megatron's name: D-16

In TF One, D-16 will become Megatron. D-16 is a name directly taken from the Aligned Continuity and has been solely associated with it until now. Even though Prime Megatron and IDW1 Megatron have very similar backstories—both being miners and then revolutionaries—only Aligned Megatron was also known as D-16.

Caste system/Social Inequality (hinted)

In both the Aligned and IDW1 continuities, pre-war Cybertronian society had a rigid caste system where one's role in society, thus their life, was determined by their alternate mode (Functionism in IDW1). In Aligned, Orion Pax's desire to learn more about this system, specifically the corruption and inequality it created, leads him to find Megatron (as described in Exodus and TF: Prime). The two become friends who desire change for their society. The interviews with Josh Cooley (the director) hint that something similar exists on Cybertron and is the main cause of their fallout.

 

The thing that starts the wedge between him [D-16] and Orion Pax is that the world is not what they thought it was, and they then start to form two different views on how to solve the problem.

In addition, someone on Twitter -who saw an early screening-said that the movie was "very in-line with IDW's ideas for how the war started," so it's safe to say it draws heavily from Aligned/IDW.  

Extra note: Another interview with Cooley revealed that in an early version of the film, Megatron was supposed to be a gladiator. He and Orion Pax were also supposed to have "very different backgrounds" - which sounds very similar to the data clerk and gladiator origins of the Aligned continuity.  

 Unfortunately, the limited runtime meant Cooley had to limit how much of the characters' origins to show on screen, including changing part of Megatron's accepted story. "If we had all the time in the world, it would've been fun to show Megatron as a gladiator and have the two characters come from very different backgrounds," Cooley added. "We actually had a gladiator scene that alluded to this origin that was cut out." Instead, Orion and D-16 are reimagined as bunkmates working as miners to bring Energon back to the planet after a years-long drought.

Cooley also mentioned being given a "bible" of the franchise's entire lore, which reminds me of the Binder of Revelation Hasbro made, or the source material for the Aligned Continuity...

The 13 Primes 

The 13 Primes will appear in the movie (you can spot them in both trailers). The idea of the 13 Primes isn't new, but this particular group version is heavily inspired by the Aligned Continuity. In Aligned, Alpha Trion is canonically one of the 13 Primes (aka the Covenant Primes, who also include Prima, Solus, and Megatronus). He wasn't considered a Prime in other stories before TF: Prime. The Covenant Primes also appear in Cyberverse and Earthspark, and TF One continues the trend.

 The design for Airachnid in TF One is very similar to the design in TF: Prime. Both have the "arms" on their backs and similar head shapes.

Some Cybertronians look like the Vehicons. Looks like we're getting multiple Steves….

Not directly related to the story, but the composer for Transformers: Prime (aka the genius who made the ionic Prime theme) is back and composing the music for the movie. If I hear the Prime theme in the movie theater, I might start screaming. 😂

I think it's so cool to see how much influence one continuity can have on the franchise, so much so that its elements are used in a movie that'll soon be seen by millions of people and future generations.

I think it would be cool to put MTMTE sparkeaters in one of my aus as the bots that lost their minds after Cybertron died. Like, as noninfectous zombies that just wander around looking for sparks as a natural predator for the returning Cybertronians.

That they ars the reason there are so few unaligned robots in the tf universe.

And a good way to smooth over the plot inconsistencies of why the rescue bots can't return to cybertron. It would make sense if, since they weren't awake when cyberon died, they were at higher risk of becoming a sparkeater from the effect of coming back to the dead planet.

So RID can happen, but certain bots can't return and have to stay off world.

I know for a fact that a handful of reactionary Cybertronians would want to reinstall and/or even intensify the pre-war caste system. I know for a fact that some bots—not only older bots because, you know, there are just those youngsters that wish to return to the “old days” that they themselves definitely have never tasted—blame the war on the lower castes and their “barbarism”, “anarchism” or simply use the war as a display of the dangers of a free and egalitarian society, and spouting things like “Well, some bots are created for servitude, you know”.

I just know.

Kinda wanted to post these pics indivdually, then realized that would be a nightmare to get in order so I'll just post the link and commentate.

-> Optimus has 3 different concept designs in these slides.

-> Face-shield Ratchet reminds me of Dreamwave Ironhide and the OG Diaclone toys.

-> Some of the face concepts in remind me of the overcomplicated Bayverse faces.

-> Seriously, I'm glad they scaled back the Bayverse face.

-> Spike's description makes him sound annoying. Though it seems like he's intended to be a teenager, so... yeah he probably would have been lol.

-> Those 2 pyramids of computer monitors in the TASK command center is the most 2000s Hollywood hacking thing I've seen in years.

-> I would have liked to see Optimus's trailer being actually utilized like this.

-> Does that Ironhide design look familiar? He should; that design was later recolored green and used as a Kup assets in games and toys.

-> Seriously, what is that huge fish thing chasing Bee and whats-his-face??? I kinda want it to be an Aquatron flashback.

-> I realize now that "CW" probably refers to Star Wars: Clone Wars, but my brain jumped it referring to the CW Network and their doofy superhero shows.

-> "Concept Soundwave isn't real and cannot hurt you" "...."

-> Not sure how I feel about the Energon flare-up idea.

-> I'm pretty sure that Megatron design was recycled for Jagex's Transformers Universe.

-> Honestly TASK being more involved with the conflict would have made sense, compared to the final product in which MiBs cover-up the Cybertronians' existence but otherwise do $÷#% all about the ALIEN CIVIL WAR THAT COULD LEVEL CITIES IN AN AFTERNOON.
