Azriel and Eris cannot communicate express emotions for the life of them, but they do try very hard.

Eris communicates mostly through flirting, honeyed quips that would turn the average fae to putty— but azriel, spymaster who is trained to be stone cold, is absolutely unaffected. It’s that Pokémon meme; Eris uses flirt, It was Uneffective!

Azriel communicates through body language, he has six limbs after all so it’s easier. Flared wings that would signal to any Illyrian that he is excited, but Eris, a high fae who knows nothing about how illyrians use their wings, cannot understand it.

They have to meet in the uncomfortable middle ground of actually saying what they mean.

Oh! I nearly forgot, but can I ask the significance of this panel?

It comes directly after Dee explains that he can’t come and see her from the future whenever he wants. (Which is one of my favorite moments where Dee’s true eldritch horror leaks in to the story), so I assume it’s… sort of a metaphor? How Emily finds herself at the foot of something she realizes is much, much bigger than she contemplated before?

(Also, I just wanted to compliment you for this panel)

(The first time I saw it, I imagined Dee was showing her this on purpose, time traveling from sometime the same day to really show her what it would be like. An object lesson.

The second time I saw it, I started to wonder

Because Dee himself doesn’t really look aware of what is going on behind him.

And maybe, just maybe, this one moment in time has become the only moment that Dee allows himself to come back to to see Emily, the one moment where he can get lost in the crowd with every other time he came back to look. The one moment where he’s explaining why he can’t come back.

Just… Makes me sad, and I wanted to say thank you for that too, because I love these characters and the story they tell, the sweet and bitter.)

I love your reading of that Uluru panel!! I think I probably didn’t intend anything that deep with it; these time skip montage style chapters are pretty choppy and I’m usually trying to figure out a way to touch on all these brief scenes or moments that I don’t want to spend a whole chapter on for whatever reason, and arrange them in a way where the cuts aren’t too hideously abrupt. For visual reasons I try to contrast different locations and not put 2 dialogue heavy moments directly next to each other. Mood wise, I don’t really want to cut from something serious and angsty to something that’s a complete backflip on that. I also sometimes just feel like drawing a nice landscape and hope it achieves my aims on these fronts haha.

I think also here I was trying to move from that final sentence, “The present is more than enough”, to demonstrating them appreciating having that present together - being able to go do cool and enriching stuff, something not completely mundane but not completely fantastical either. (I mean... sightseeing within your own country is extremely normal, but going to Uluru from Melbourne... not a convenient day trip, since it’s 2000km; 25 hour solid driving, or you can fly in a few hours but I think you have to go via Sydney, so that makes it take at least twice as long I guess. Not that it's specified how long they're there for. I haven’t been myself but I’d love to one day...)

So, yeah!! More of a mechanical/compositional rationale than an intentional metaphor, but I think your reading makes complete sense and actually improves the page! (Sometimes I do intend visual metaphors... but sometimes they’re just happy accidents.)

And thanks for the compliment re the crowd of Dees!! I also love the moments I can lean into his eldritch qualities... they’re sadly few and far between but maybe that helps them be more surprising?? Definitely your first reading was what I intended, that he zigzagged back pretty quickly, probably even from within the conversation, but there is an inherent ambiguity to Dee’s time travelling where unless I take pains to spell it out, there really is no way to know when he’s come from. Even if he can be assumed to be taking every interaction chronologically, there’s no knowing how much time has passed for him between each visit. I don’t even know how to estimate how long his experience of time is, when he’s zigzagging back so densely all the time; even the number of living things on Earth any moment is an incomprehensibly mind-boggling number. That eldritch horror again!

Truth be told I hadn’t thought of him coming back to this moment and blending in with the crowd for the rest of the future ;_; but that’s so real... he could well be, the sad sack...

I had a different sillier thought from slightly misreading your question on first pass, which is that maybe he doesn’t originally know what’s going on behind him, but then later on as he’s just going about his business he goes “oh I know exactly how to punctuate that thing I said earlier!!!” and then does it as an afterthought. Oh to have the ability to add the things you wish you’d said to an earlier conversation 😂

Everytime descendants puts out a new trailer, I'm convinced that:

They don't care about the animated movies at all

It's a retcon and the Isle doesn't exist. Not to mention they brought back old actors from the 1997 Cinderella for nostalgia bait

Like, these movies CLAIM to be connected to the ANIMATED movies, and yet, you got shit like saying the sleeping curse was 100 years when no, in the animated movie it was at best a few hours lmao, 100 years is the original fairy tale, while you also now have the Jabberwocky being referenced when animated Alice in Wonderland didn't have that, only the original story did alongside Tim Burton's first live action...Queen of Hearts also in animated didn't have magic but they needed to make this bitch Maleficent levels of threat somehow I guess. *Well, yes, this film is a retcon in a way, but not in the way you said. The Isle STILL existed, but now in a way off, "Tfw your classmate united every kingdom and wouldn't let you rest in death and instead decided a prison island was better for you as a punishment."- the only reason it comes off as the Isle is no longer important because it suddenly went from Isle kids to now just kingdoms who didn't join Auradon having their kids be invited, in this films case, Red. And if we try to connect Beyond the Isle of the Lost to this mess somehow, they confirmed not many VKs now attend Auradon Prep, which is Disney terms for we not bothering to continue with the Isle kids plot now that the Isle is gone...maybe they aware that means addressing the elephant in the room that is vengeful villains have now been freed onto Auradon lmao. *The fact that they brought Brandy back as Cinderella just to get fans of her film in to watch, only to reveal in trailer she gets taken prisoner by the Queen of Hearts and is potentially beheaded...the disrespect vibes are strong here, let alone the vibes off, 'we did our job of getting her fans to watch, now time to get rid of her for a-lot of the film-' *"What the bloody hell is even going on?" i've never really nailed down a proper time for when i have doc's post-trilogy canon happening, it's always just x date post return to his present with the family. so i've been thinking about it and i needed something solid (for myself at least) to play off of with headcanons, with setting details, all that fun stuff.

so i think i'm leaning towards '87 or later. (of course this is all subject to change with whatever happens in a thread - i'm still totally open for him being wherever, whenever in his timeline).

so if his main default verse is set around 1987 or so, he's turning (chronologically) seventy-seven. officially, as far as the records are concerned, he's only sixty-seven this year.

How do you think time works between the three realms? I've been thinking that time moves slower in the human realm than it does in the Devildom and Celestial realms, but there isn't a whole lot that supports that besides the fact that Levi has anime and manga (and technology) thousands of years before the events of OG Obey Me, and even then it's pretty meh for evidence.

It's been rattling around my brain for a while and I hope you might have some more insight. :)

And I'll be honest, the flow of time in this game is a bit strange. Really strange. The wonky time travel stuff and whatever's going on in NB (and the weird timeline-related plot twists I'm sure we'll get later) are hard to follow.

You need a certain amount of suspension of disbelief too. The demons have all this fancy technology hundreds/thousands of years ago? Sure! Manga? No problem! Modern clothing? Why not!

(I assume angels have the same things the demons do, and my on-the-fly headcanon is that's due to previous attempts at peace treaties involved sharing/developing cross-realm technological advancements.)

I'm sure other blogs that focus on the lore/theories behind OM! canon have done a better job trying to pinpoint some of those answers than I ever could. I think the technology aspect is what bugs me the most though and I'm not sure we have (or will ever have) clear explanations for that, or ones that make logical sense, anyway.

Sleepy time ideas before I log off for the night:

It could be something to do with time travel or foresight that gives the Devildom/Celestial Realm access to these things long before the human world does, or...hm. I don't know, maybe we should think of them as if they're alien races in other realms that are more advanced (because reasons), and over time their developments eventually made it to the human world? Like a demon being summoned for a ritual dropped his D.D.D. and humans studied/replicated parts of that technology. (It sounds silly but my demon!mc would totally do something clumsy like that so anything's possible.)
