Am I Wrong for Supporting Trump? Here’s Why I Did
Let’s talk about something I know is controversial. I know what people expect when they look at me, a young black woman who should be rallying behind the ideals of “girl power” right?? But here’s the truth, there are specific reasons why I’ve supported Donald Trump, even if I don’t agree with everything he stands for. I get that it’s a strong opinion, especially since I'm not even from the U.S., but here’s why I think the way I do.
We live in a time when people expect every woman to stand firmly on the “girl power” side of things. Supporting Trump is a choice that goes against what many would expect, and it wasn’t made lightly. Sure, it’s complex and comes with some major reservations. I’m not saying Trump is perfect, far from it, but here’s why I chose him over Kamala Harris, why my views on issues don’t fit neatly into a box, and why I’m okay with that.
One of the first things that came up when I mentioned supporting Trump was people questioning how I, a young black woman, could even consider it. I get it, the media, influencers, and even politicians often frame Trump as an enemy of women, someone who goes against everything women are fighting for. I’m not from the U.S., but hey, I keep up with what’s happening there, and this expectation that I’d automatically be pro-Kamala Harris was... kind of frustrating.
Supporting someone doesn’t mean endorsing everything they do. For me, Trump’s policies on the economy and his straightforward approach to international relations were factors that made me lean his way. Sure, he has some problematic stances, and no, I’m not okay with his past comments about women. But sometimes, we end up supporting leaders for what they do rather than who they are.
Many expected that with a woman of color in such a powerful position, all women would rally behind her. And yes, I do admire her accomplishments, especially as a woman breaking barriers in politics. Wow! But my support isn’t guaranteed just because someone represents diversity. My concerns with Kamala Harris stem from her record and policy choices. For example, her time as California’s attorney general brought up issues about her stances on criminal justice reform. The fact that she supported policies that disproportionately impacted low-income communities and people of color did not sit well with me. To me, that wasn’t “girl power”, that was choosing politics over genuine change.
Trump’s administration wasn’t without its own flaws. I don’t support every single thing he’s said or done. There are some real issues, racism, misogyny, anti-LGBTQ+ comments, that no one should look past.
Trump has been accused of using racial language and making comments that people find offensive or outright racist. For me, this is an area I cannot support him on. We can respect people of all races and backgrounds while still having strong policies, and his words didn’t always reflect that.
His administration rolled back protections for LGBTQ+ people, and I can’t stand behind that. Everyone deserves equal rights, and some of the policies that were put in place felt like a step back.
I completely understand why people are critical of him. But just because I agree with some of Trump’s economic and international policies, does that mean I’m condoning his prejudiced comments? No, absolutely not. But at the same time, I’m choosing to focus on policies that I believe affect more than just what a president says or does on a personal level.
Take, for example, his approach to international trade. His policies put American interests first in a way that I respected, he wasn’t afraid to pull out of deals that didn’t serve the country’s economy. This approach set him apart, in my opinion, and made me think beyond the stereotypes people had formed around him. It’s not that I don’t see the other issues. I just think policies that create jobs and improve the economy can ultimately help uplift more people.
He emphasized bringing jobs back to the U.S. He focused on manufacturing, and yes, some people argue that this was all talk. But for many Americans, especially in middle America, his trade policies were a promise to bring jobs back to communities that had been ignored for a long time.
While his stance on immigration is definitely controversial, I believe that he brought a sense of urgency to the conversation about secure borders. Security matters to any country, and while I may not agree with every way Trump approached it, I think he made some people feel he was listening to their concerns.
One of Trump’s most relatable aspects is that he didn’t “play it safe.” He said things that upset people, sure, but that’s also why a lot of people felt he was more authentic than some other candidates. Again, I don’t agree with every single comment he made, especially the insensitive ones. But I also think that sometimes, society has become overly sensitive and focused on words instead of actions.
Trump positioned himself as an outsider, someone who wasn’t afraid to shake things up. For young people like me, there’s something refreshing about that. People who feel politics has become a stale game of promises might appreciate that he didn’t represent the same kind of polished politician image that often seems fake.
Now, this is probably one of the hardest issues for me. As a woman, I believe in bodily autonomy, and the right to choose is something I firmly support. Trump’s anti-abortion stance made me uncomfortable, as it does for many women. Abortion is such a personal and complex issue. While I may not fully agree with everything he said, I think there should be more room for women to make their own choices. Trump’s stance on abortion didn’t offer that space, and I can’t fully support that.
But let’s face it, both political parties in the U.S. have been slow to secure real support for reproductive rights. And it’s not like Kamala Harris or the Democratic Party have been flawless in their approach either. It feels like both sides use abortion as a political tool rather than truly respecting women’s choices.
I’ve come to accept that I don’t have to fit into a single category. Just because I support women’s rights doesn’t mean I need to support everything a female politician does. Similarly, supporting Trump doesn’t mean I’m on board with every word he’s ever spoken. As a woman, I choose to judge based on a person’s policies and actions rather than blindly supporting anyone just because they seem to “represent” me.
It’s possible to support one part of a leader’s policies while being critical of others. It’s not easy, and people might question my reasoning, but I’d rather be honest about it. Sometimes, we have to look beyond labels and remember that people’s views can be complex, especially in politics. Yes, I’m all for girl power, but in this case, I had my reasons, and I’m okay with them.
I am someone who believes in women’s empowerment. But to me, supporting a candidate doesn’t mean I support everything they say or do. It means that I see things in them that align with some of my beliefs. I’ll always support women and believe in gender equality, but when it comes to politics, sometimes our views are more complex than just “all or nothing.”
If you agree, cool. If not, that’s fine too, I think it’s about time we can have open discussions about politics without feeling like we have to pick sides all the time. At the end of the day, I’m just sharing what makes sense to me.

They tell us to "learn from history," but what happens when history is erased? When a leader attempts to rewrite the past, they lay the foundation for future injustices. This is how oppression thrives—in the silence of forgotten truths. We cannot afford to look away. The fight for justice demands we remember, we acknowledge, and we confront the uncomfortable reality of our past. Stay awake. Stay relentless. No one rewrites our struggle.

From Dan Rather, American journalist and commentator:
6 Principles Many Journalists Miss (Or, Why Nixon hated your correspondent)
"If I may, there’s something I need to get off my chest.
"As democracy remains under siege, it has been frustrating to watch how the press covers politics these days.
"I am reminded by lessons that came to me during the Nixon years as a CBS News correspondent, which I’ll add here:
"Enough with Both-sides-ism. When one side lies intentionally and repeatedly, they are no longer entitled to the benefit of the doubt. They should be held to account, right away. Do not simply repeat the narratives they spew.
"Prioritize Live Fact-Checking. Rigorous and robust fact-checking is the best defense against misinformation, intentional lies, and deflection. If Trump says the sky is green, the story isn’t that the sky is now green; the story is that the sky is still blue and Trump got it wrong.
"Ask Lawmakers Hard Questions. Ask about the fundamental principles of democracy. Push them to go on the record that Biden won the 2020 election. Ask if they support the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"This writing is not to offer any claim of knowing it all. Your correspondent has made his share of mistakes, but after more than seven decades I believe I have picked up a few useful guideposts. Good journalism is always worth it. Our democracy depends on it."
