Here's something that makes the Canadian electoral system, as I understand it, vastly different to the American one: Party leaders can lose their seats.
If memory serves it happens rather rarely, but.
The biggest casualty so far in the big third-party House of Commons massacre is, Jagmeet Singh.
Not only did he lose his seat,
He trailed behind in third place in his riding.
Some of you following this blog for a while might be surprised to find out that that really doesn't surprise me. I mean, it's a bit of a shock he lost THAT BADLY in his own riding, but, yeah. Being privy to some snippets of internal party drama, I was pretty certain that even if he didn't lose his seat, this was going to be the ol' boys last go at it.
I feel like I never really got to fully do a deep dive into Singh specifically since more often than not I felt like I was having to DEFEND him from the bullshit-- but. Let's just say, though I think Singh had a very respectable run as leader, the party was overdue for a change in leadership.
Really the more bitter pill right now is the utterly massive hit it looks like we're taking to our seats. We're likely going to end up only in the single digits. Eeeeeehhhhhhh. 🥲
Don't get me wrong . . . I was for sure starting to feel a creeping sense of existential dread at the possibility Pierre might just scrape a victory but . . . Another competent but white man leading this country, with more power than ever in the Commons . . . Again, it's not going to make the country worse, but it's not going to make it better either.
RIP cringe flowercrown daddy. Your wife guy how do you do my fellow kids energy will be missed.
Peepee on the otherhand, looks like he may just lose his seat too to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy. Currently, as far as I can tell, Fanjoy has a 56% lead!
Get fucked, dick weed.
And yes, that means it IS 100% possible for a political party to win the priministry, but the party leader themselves to lose their riding. Typically, in an instance like that, a party leader would remain acting PM and leader until a successor was chosen.
If Peepee loses his seat, he'll be expected to eventually step down aswell.
Oh and if you guys wanna know about the long ballot, let me know.

No electoral system is more accommodating to political trolling as the Canadian one.

My other canadian election hot take is that it is maybe a little bit ridiculous to call Poilievre fascist or trump-lite. Certainly he is markedly further right than Canada has seen in a while, and certainly his victory would’ve been not good for me and other queer Canadians as well as for many minority groups, but like, fascism is a specific word that means a specific thing - not just anything far right - and I am unconvinced that that is what the CPC is.
Poilievre was not remarkably authoritarian, barring perhaps his extension of the notwithstanding clause re: being “tough on crime”. He was certainly nationalist, but not unprecedentedly so, especially when we are mid-trade war with the global superpower and under genuine threat of annexation - I am not convinced he was any more nationalist than Carney. He encouraged populism but did not frequently nor explicitly target specific minority groups as the cause of Canada’s issues - certainly, things would’ve been worse for many minority groups (coming from a trans person 💀) but this is mostly bc a) right wing economic policy tends to exacerbate social inequalities and b) his voter base, consisting of both moderate conservatives and genuine neo-fascists, would have been emboldened - but this was not directly a part of his platform (barring a footnote in his platform about being “tough on woke”, but this was rarely a major talking point of his at rallies or with the press, unlike Trump, who made bigotry a very explicit part of his platform.
I think calling him fascist or trump-lite does an injustice to the genuine actual fascism going on in the states right now. Things would’ve been bad under him IMO for certain, but not like it is in the states, and not in the same way. It also looks kind of ridiculous to use a word as strong as fascism so brazenly — it’s the left wing equivalent of labeling everything involving any kind of government economic intervention communism. i think a lot of the “trump-lite” comments happen because he very much marketed himself like how trump did — slogans, names, rallies, some populism, etc. — but as far as policy goes, he was definitely not as extreme as trump.
but that is just my 2 cents lol

Just because no one seems to be talking about it (other than Jagmeet Singh), y’all should know that Poilievre recently attended a fundraiser held by billionaires who run privatized healthcare businesses in the States. No one knows what he promised these billionaires, but given that the election is close-by and our healthcare has already been a major point of contention in the race for prime minister, this seems like an important things to share

I think how Pierre Poilievre did an interview sponsored by an anti-abortion group (PreBorn, which is American evangelist to boot), should be talked about more. Elbows. Up.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said, when asked by NDP leader Jagmeet Singh to recognize that there's a genocide happening in Palestine on g the debate stage last night, "I will never use that word, because I don't want to politicize the situation"
Ik why Carney doesn't want to "politicize" the "situation". If you admit something is a political problem, that implies it has political solutions
"Gaza is suffering bc bad and sad :(" is "apolitical" and *at best* it implies sending foreign aid is probably a good idea
"The Israeli government is continuing a decades old tradition of land theft and ethnic cleansing, now centred in Gaza" is "political" and it implies a lot of things, such as "we shouldn't be providing arms to Israel"

Indigenous peoples came up just once during Wednesday's French-language federal leaders' debate, the first of two official debates before the vote, and the question was this: Would you impose a pipeline on Indigenous nations that don't want it? First up was Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who sidestepped the question. [...] NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh began to object, but he didn't get to fully answer the question. Moderator Patrice Roy of Radio-Canada asked Poilievre and Liberal Leader Mark Carney to respond, since both are pledging to increase oil and gas production. "No, never impose," said Carney.

Thank GOD at least the libs aren't getting a majority, and in fact, look like they're going to have lost seats. In fact, the only party right now who seems like they've gains are the Conservatives.
With any luck the NDP will stay under 12 and be even more inconsequential than they already were. The fact that the party that doesn't even want to be part of Canada looks like they're going to hold the balance of power in the Canadian Parliament is simply hilarious.

Political Shake-Up in Canada: What’s Next?
Jagmeet Singh has just ripped up the deal that propped up Trudeau’s Liberal government. This move marks a significant shift in Canadian politics, possibly changing the timeline for the next federal election. Singh accuses Trudeau of surrendering to corporate greed and failing to support the working class effectively. Meanwhile, Trudeau claims he can still collaborate with the NDP and warns against Conservative policies.
What do you think this means for Canada's political landscape? Will this trigger an early election? Who stands to gain the most from this shake-up? Let’s discuss!
