A short break from the Demons
These are fanarts based on my favorite childhood book, "The Republic of SHKID" (SHKID stands for “School-commune named after Dostoevsky”. A book about street teenagers who ended up in a reform school in the thirties. This book is autobiography of two young people - Alexey Panteleev-Eremeev, and Grigory Belykh.Actually, in the first picture there are their Shkid versions - fair-haired Yankel (nicknames are heard in ShKID) and dark-haired Lyonka Panteleev.I love them so much, god. And the real story of Grigory Belykh is very tragic - because of some ditties about the authorities, he was arrested and died in prison due to tuberculosis . All this time, Panteleev tried to achieve the early release of Grigory, but to no avail.
Tumblr media
And this guy is a Tsygan(Gypsy). Real name Nikolai Gromonostsev, and he also really existed. The words above him are one of my favorite quotes from him in the book -Thought is the intellectual excess of a given individual.
Read SHKID, it's a wonderful book, please, it's unfair that it's so little known.(unfortunately, I could not find at least a freely available English version, but perhaps it exists. By the way, there is also a film adaptation, but personally I consider it unsuccessful - there are too many changes with the original. )

What’s On Michael Portillo’s iPod: Reformat
Here at Birthday Cake For Breakfast, we like to get to the heart of what an artist is all about. We feel that what influences them is just as important as the music they make. With that in mind, off the back of releasing their new album ‘Precursed‘, Luke Pajak of Reformat talks us through a number of influences. Take it away, Luke… Words: Andy Hughes “Perhaps it’s because I’ve been watching…

would you have any pictures/content of dezik and tsygan, the first dogmonauts? i saw a few pics on google, but they wouldn't tell me which is which (though by the name, i assumed tsygan was the black and white one, because 60s). love your blog <3 <3
Tumblr media
Hii! I don't have a lot but I'm happy to share what I know. Dezik and Tsygan did a suborbital flight in July 1951. It was top secret at the time and only became known to the public in 1991. Dezik is the white one and Tsygan the black-and-white one.
They were trained before the flight, including the centrifuge.
Their rocket went up 101 km to the edge of atmosphere. The flight lasted about 20 minutes. They spent 4 minutes in zero gravity.
They landed about 20 km from the starting point and were both in good health.
A week later, Dezik did another suborbital flight (partnered with a dog called Lisa). The parachute didn't open on landing, so unfortunately they both died. :'(
Tsygan was adopted by one of the space engineers and lived the rest of his life with the family.

July 22, 1951: Soviet space dogs Dezik and Tsygan become the first mammals to survive spaceflight
Two stray female dogs, Dezik and Tsygan, become the first dogs to fly in space onboard a Soviet R-1 rocket. The pair traveled to an altitude of 68 miles (110 kilometers) and were the first mammals successfully recovered from spaceflight. During the 1950s and ‘60s, the Soviet Union sent more than fifty dogs into space, some of which became the first living creatures to orbit planet Earth.

Hello. This blog uses two different tagging systems: by type of art and by type of flight.
Art:
Photos: Historical photographs.
Art: Drawings, paintings, sculptures, or other art depicting Soviet space dogs.
Music : For the intended viewing experience you can listen to all the music selections here.
Writing: Poems, books, and other writing about Soviet space dogs.
And by flight type: Orbital and Sub-Orbital
Orbital flights
Laika (Barker): Originally named Kudryavka (Curly), she was also given the nicknames Zhuchka (Little Bug) and Limonchik (Little Lemon) however the name Laika was the one that stuck. The first higher organism in space, she died due to overheating and stress.
Belka (Squirrel/Whitey) and Strelka (Little Arrow): The first higher organism to survive orbit in outer space.
Pchyolka (Little Bee) and Mushka (Little Fly): After reentry error their spacecraft was intentionally destroyed via self destruct to prevent investigation by foreign powers. Mushka was trained for Sputnik 2 with Laika, but had refused to eat properly.
Chernushka (Blackie): Recovered unharmed in capsule.
Zvyozdochka (Starlet): Named by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and flew in the last practice flight before his own. Safely recovered.
Veterok (Light Breeze) and Ugolyok (Ember): Spent 21 days in space. Though they took several weeks to recover from the side effect of prolonged time in space, they eventually recovered without long term issues.
Sub-Orbital Flights
Dezik, Tsygan (G#psy), and Lisa-1 (Fox): Dezik and Tsygan where the first dogs to ever make a suborbital flight, however on a subsequent flight Dezik and Lisa-1 both perished when their parachute failed to deploy.
Lisa-2 (Fox) and Ryzhik (Ginger): Successfully flew to an altitude of 100 km.
Smelaya (Brave) and Malyshka (Baby): Smelaya ran away the day of her initial flight, but was found the next day and made a successful flight with Malyshka, despite crashing when their parachute failed to deploy.
Bobik and ZIB (A Russian acronym for "Substitute for Missing Bobik", "Замена Исчезнувшему Бобику" Zamena Ischeznuvshemu Bobiku): After Bobik ran away just days before her flight, she was replaced by an untrained stray dog found on the barracks named ZIB. Made a successful flight to 100 km and back.
Otvazhnaya (Brave One) and Snezhinka (Snowflake): Successful flight. Otvazhnaya would make another 5 flights after that.
Albina and Tsyganka (G#psy Girl): Successful flight.
Damka (Queen of Checkers) and Krasavka (Little Beauty/Belladonna): Damka was also known as Shutka (Joke) and Zhemchuzhnaya (Pearly). Krasavka was also known as Kometka (Little Comet) and Zhulka (Cheater). Despite a series of equipment failures, both survived their flight.
Bars (Snow Leopard)and Lisichka (Little Fox): Both died due to the explosion of their rocket.
Other dogs that flew on sub-orbital flights include Dymka (Smoky), Modnitsa (Fashionista), and Kozyavka (Booger).

Animals played a huge role in space exploration, helping us understand radiation, gravity, and survival in space. Let’s remember these pioneers! 🚀
First Balloon Flight (1783) A sheep, duck, and rooster flew in a Montgolfier hot air balloon. Each had a role—sheep for human-like physiology, duck as control, and rooster to compare with the duck. All survived the 8-minute flight, reaching 460m.
First Animals in Space (1947) Fruit flies became the first living beings in space, sent on a V-2 rocket by the U.S. They were chosen for their genetic similarity to humans and fast reproduction. They returned safely, showing no radiation effects.
First Mammals in Space (1948-1949) Monkeys like Albert I & II were sent on V-2 rockets, but both died due to suffocation and impact. Later, in 1959, Miss Able & Miss Baker survived their flight, enduring intense G-forces and weightlessness. The Soviets also sent rhesus monkeys in the ‘80s and ‘90s, most surviving.
First Dogs in Space (1951-1960) The Soviets used dogs over monkeys. Dezik & Tsygan made a suborbital flight in 1951 and returned safely. Laika, the first animal to orbit Earth (1957), sadly died from overheating. However, in 1960, Belka & Strelka became the first to survive orbit, along with mice, a rabbit, and plants.
First Chimpanzees in Space (1961) Ham, trained to perform tasks in space, flew on a Mercury-Redstone rocket. His success led to Alan Shepard’s flight just months later. Later, Enos became the first chimp to orbit Earth.
Ethics of Animal Testing Many animals died due to mission failures, but some, like Laika, were sent on one-way trips knowingly. Space exploration benefited immensely, but should animal testing continue? What do you think?

There's an article by Matt Williams, Universe Today, on phys.org called How Many Dogs Have Been Sent To Space?
Quoting the article, these were the records of the dogs:
. . .
"The first to go up were Dezik and Tsygan, who both launched aboard an R-1 rocket on July 22nd, 1951. The mission flew to a maximum altitude of 110 km, and both dogs were recovered unharmed afterwards. Dezik made another sub-orbital flight on July 29th, 1951, with a dog named Lisa, although neither survived because their capsule's parachute failed to deploy on re-entry.
"Several more launches took place throughout the Summer and Fall of 1951, which included the successful launch and recovery of space dogs Malyshka and ZIB. In both cases, these dogs were substitutes for the original space dogs – Smelaya and Bolik – who ran away just before the were scheduled to launch."
Tumblr media
"Photo of Otvazhnaya and the Mafrusha, two of the three brave cosmonauts who flew together on July 2nd, 1959. Credit: Wikipedia Commons (.ru)"
"By 1954, space dogs Lisa-2 ("Fox" or "Vixen", the second dog to bear this name after the first died), Ryzhik ("Ginger" because of the color of her fur) made their debut. Their mission flew to an altitude of 100 km on June 2nd, 1954, and both dogs were recovered safely. The following year, Albina and Tsyganka ("Gypsy girl") were both ejected out of their capsule at an altitude of 85 km and landed safely.
"Between 1957 to 1960, 11 flights with dogs were made using the R-2A series of rockets, which flew to altitudes of about 200 km (124 mi). Three flights were made to an altitude of about 450 km (280 mi) using R-5A rockets in 1958. In the R-2 and R-5 rockets, the dogs were contained in a pressured cabin.
"Those to take part in these launches included Otvazhnaya ("Brave One") who made a flight on July 2nd, 1959, along with a rabbit named Marfusha ("Little Martha") and another dog named Snezhinka ("Snowflake"). Otvazhnaya would go to make 5 other flights between 1959 and 1960."
. . .
"By the late 1950s, and as part of the Sputnik and Vostok programs, Russian dogs began to be sent into orbit around Earth aboard R-7 rockets. On November 3rd, 1957, the famous space dog Laika became the first animal to go into orbit as part of the Sputnik-2 mission. The mission ended tragically, with Laika dying in flight. But unlike other missions where dogs were sent into suborbit, her death was anticipated in advance."
Tumblr media
"The famous space dog Laika, pictured here  before her launch in 1957. Credit: AP Photo/NASA"
"It was believed Laika would survive for a full ten days, when in fact, she died between five and seven hours into the flight. At the time, the Soviet Union claimed she died painlessly while in orbit due to her oxygen supply running out. More recent evidence however, suggests that she died as a result of overheating and panic.
"This was due to a series of technical problems which resulted from a botched deployment. The first was the damage that was done to the thermal system during separation, the second was some of the satellite's thermal insulation being torn loose. As a result of these two mishaps, temperatures in the cabin reached over 40º C.
"The mission lasted 162 days before the orbit finally decayed and it fell back to Earth. Her sacrifice has been honored by many countries through a series of commemorative stamps, and she was honored as a "hero of the Soviet Union". Much was learned from her mission about the behavior of organisms during space flight, though it has been argued that what was learned did not justify the sacrifice."
"The next dogs to go into space were Belka ("Squirrel") and Strelka ("Little Arrow"), which took place on Aug. 19th, 1960, as part of the Sputnik-5 mission. The two dogs were accompanied by a grey rabbit, 42 mice, 2 rats, flies, and several plants and fungi, and all spent a day in orbit before returning safely to Earth.
"Strelka went on to have six puppies, one of which was named Pushinka ("Fluffy"). This pup was presented to President John F. Kennedy's daughter (Caroline) by Nikita Khrushchev in 1961 as a gift. Pushinka went on to have puppies with the Kennedy's dog (named Charlie), the descendants of which are still alive today."
Tumblr media
"The dogs Veterok and Ugoljok, who spent 22 days in orbit as part of the Cosmos 110 mission. Credit: Wikipedia Commons/Tekniska museet"
"On Dec. 1st, 1960, space dogs Pchyolka ("Little Bee") and Mushka ("Little Fly") went into space as part of Sputnik-6. The dogs, along with another compliment of various test animals, plants and insects, spent a day in orbit. Unfortunately, all died when the craft's retrorockets experienced an error during reentry, and the craft had to be intentionally destroyed.
"Sputnik 9, which launched on March 9th, 1961, was crewed by spacedog Chernenko ("Blackie") – as well as a cosmonaut dummy, mice and a guinea pig. The capsule made one orbit before returning to Earth and making a soft landing using a parachute. Chernenko was safely recovered from the capsule.
"On March 25th, 1961, the dog Zvyozdocha ("Starlet") who was named by Yuri Gagarin, made one orbit on board the Sputnik-10 mission with a cosmonaut dummy. This practice flight took place a day before Gagarin's historic flight on April 12th, 1961, in which he became the first man to go into space. After re-entry, Zvezdochka safely landed and was recovered."
"Spacedogs Veterok ("Light Breeze") and Ugolyok ("Coal") were launched on board a Voskhod space capsule on Feb. 22nd, 1966, as part of Cosmos 110. This mission, which spent 22 days in orbit before safely landing on March 16th, set the record for longest-duration spaceflight by dogs, and would not be broken by humans until 1971."
. . .
"Four other dogs died in Soviet space missions, including Bars and Lisichka (who were killed when their R-7 rocket exploded shortly after launch). On July 28, 1960, Pchyolka and Mushka also died when their space capsule was purposely destroyed after a failed re-entry to prevent foreign powers from inspecting the capsule."
All credit goes to the author Matt Williams at phys.org. I did not write any of this.
super niche question but can anyone help me find the names of the other soviet space dogs who didn’t survive other than Laika? i’ve been searching and i can only find the names of 6 other dogs when lots of sources say there were anywhere from 15-17 that didn’t survive

On 31 August 1950, the US launched a mouse into space (137 km), but the rocket disintegrated because the parachute system failed. The US launched several other mice in the 1950s. On 22 July 1951, the Soviet Union launched the R-1 IIIA-1 flight, carrying the dogs Tsygan (Russian: Цыган, "Gypsy") and Dezik (Russian: Дезик) into space, but not into orbit. These were the first living higher organisms successfully recovered from a spaceflight.

Gitan, Marina Viatkina
Gitan, Tsygan, Gipsy… how do you imagine those people? What's in their soul? Why do they dare to live like centuries ago did their fathers, exploring the world without having anchors in any of the places? All this really sounds intriguing and gives them the allure of mystery... Have you ever met a real Gitan? And here I mean not a race or origin, but a state of mind, way of living, modus vivendi if you will. There is something deep in their leering eyes... Is it a real enigma spirit that drives their lives or are they just like everyone around us?
