A Tudor Christmas . . Christmas Day in Tudor times was an end to the fasting of Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, a time when Tudor people were not allowed to eat eggs, cheese or meat. . ◼ On Christmas Day, the festive celebrations began early with a mass before dawn & then two further masses later in the day. Church congregations held lighted tapers as the genealogy of Christ was sung, & then they went home to enjoy a well-deserved Christmas Day feast. . ◼ Henry VIII was one of the first people to have turkey as part of his Christmas feast, after the bird was introduced into Britain in the 1520s. It soon became a popular meat, but such feasting was only enjoyed by those of high society, & not by the masses. . ◼ The famous Tudor Christmas Pie was a coffin shaped pie crust containing a turkey stuffed with a goose, which was stuffed with a chicken, which was stuffed with a partridge, which was stuffed with a pigeon. If that’s not enough, the pie was often served with hare, game birds & wild fowl. . ◼ The Lord of Misrule was a popular part of Tudor Christmas traditions & involved a commoner playing the “Lord of Misrule” & supervising entertainments, drinking & revelry, &, in general, causing chaos. Henry VII loved the tradition & had a Lord of Misrule & an Abbot of Unreason, & it seems that his son, Henry VIII, enjoyed the tradition too, because not only did he appoint a Lord of Misrule for his own court, but also for Princess Mary’s household in 1525. . ◼ During Edward VI’s reign, the Duke of Northumberland is known to have spent a huge amount of money on the tradition, but neither Mary I or Elizabeth I kept it. . . . #ChristmasDay #Heritage #Tudor #TudorHistory #TudorPeriod #TudorDynasty #HouseofTudor #Feast #Banquet #HenryVII #HenryVIII #KingHenryVIII #History #Christmas #ChristmasTime #TudorTimes #Tudors #England #Royalty #Britishmonarchy #Thebritishmonarchy (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br0p6joFrlz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=s1ki3nz10n1s

Identifying some of the metal detecting finds I acquired recently. Most excitingly for me is this late medieval Tudor clasp with that wonderful verdigris patina and head stud brooch from the 1st-2nd century. The part of tongue and strap hook is marked with MS and possibly 18th century. The other buckle is dated to approximately 13th and 14th century. Not sure that I’ll use them in my work just yet. Source - Identifying Metallic Small Finds by Michael J. Cuddeford 1992. I can’t believe how accurate the drawings are to my stash. Just goes to show, there must be hundreds of these things around and about. . . . #metaldetecting #metaldetectingfinds #tudor #tudorperiod #tudorclasp #beltbuckles #treasures #treasuresfromtheground #romanfinds (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVSs6uEoMQL/?utm_medium=tumblr

The British World - Tudor Seamen. “Explorers and Navigators, Pirates and Slavers” #britain and #ireland always had sailors, but until the #tudorperiod they were often anonymous figures—fishermen, modest merchants, or reluctant seafarers pressed into action when the king’s agents requisitioned their ships in time of war. 1) Sir Walter Raleigh: a portrait from life painted in 1598. He was known as an explorer, a writer, a spy, a courtier and a soldier. He was favored by #elizabethi but executed during the reign of #jamesi 2) Early habit - This tobacco pouch inscribed in Latin, with clay pipes and a bone tobacco stopper, may once have belonged to #sirwalterraleigh , who was partly responsible for popularizing tobacco at the #english court. #uk #england🇬🇧 #englishhistory #tudor #theenglishcourt https://www.instagram.com/p/CIZdRk6r-Hb/?igshid=o2s2un3zz8dh

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖⁣ ⁣ Hello everyone, hope you’re all well. Today I’ve got a review for you that in all honesty, I didn’t think I would ever be doing! The first time I tried to read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel was when it was first released and I think I got about 50 pages through before I gave up? I’ve been determined to give it another shot though because I love well written historical fiction, one of my favourite periods of history is the Tudor period and there’s been so many rave reviews and two Booker Prize wins (so far?). I wanted to know what I was missing.⁣ ⁣ I think the problem I found originally with Wolf Hall was that it needs a lot of concentration. It has an extensive cast list, many characters have the same name i.e. Thomas (which the author does actually make a few jokes about) and Cromwell himself is referred to as “he,” which can make it difficult to keep up with the narrative when there are multiple males in the room!⁣ ⁣ Putting all this to one side, Wolf Hall is an extraordinary piece of fiction that even though it took some effort, was worth everything that I put into it. It’s meticulous, well-researched, beautifully detailed and a great representation of what was going on in Tudor England at that time. I immediately felt immersed within the power games and struggles, appreciated the role of each character and thought the dynamics between all the strong personalities were executed perfectly. ⁣ ⁣ I’m taking a small break from the series as it’s something I don’t think I can binge read all at once. However, I’m very excited to get onto Bring Up The Bodies soon. Even though I’m fully aware of the events that happen in the Tudor family, it still feels like an exciting and tense series. I’m delighted I gave this another chance and that I’ve had a change of heart on how I feel about it! Definitely a case of right book, wrong time the first time I read this. ⁣ ⁣ A solid four stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 #bookstagram #booklover #bookstagrammer #bookworm #bookreview #wolfhall #hilarymantel #tudorperiod #fourstarreads #giveabookanotherchance https://www.instagram.com/p/CEhY7qNAL0y/?igshid=hx3zdgxcetuo

Queen Elizabeth I . (b.7 September 1533 – d.24 March 1603) . . Elizabeth was fluent in several languages, the first four she was taught were French, Flemish, Italian & Spanish. . ◼ By 1544, Elizabeth could write English, Latin, & Italian, she also progressed in French & Greek. . ◼ By the time her formal education ended in 1550, Elizabeth was one of the best educated women of her generation. . ◼ At the end of her life, Elizabeth was also believed to speak Welsh, Cornish, Scottish & Irish in addition to the languages mentioned above. . ◼ The Venetian ambassador stated in 1603 that she "possessed [these] languages so thoroughly that each appeared to be her native tongue". . . . #ElizabethI #QueenElizabethI #GoodQueenBess #VirginQueen #Gloriana #HouseofTudor #TudorDynasty #History #QueenofEngland #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #HistoryFacts #Heritage #Elizabethiofengland #TudorPeriod #Thebritishmonarchy #HistoryFacts #historybuff 📷 c1575 by unknown artist © National Portrait Gallery, London . @nationalportraitgallery (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsIww6BlAAi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1p6874r95i5v3

Anne Boleyn Clock . Reputed to have been given by King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn on the morning of their marriage in 1532. . . Description; . ◼ A gilt-bronze wall hung clock, the striking movement with a single steel hand, in a square tabernacle case, the top pierced with foliage & scrolls containing the bell, surmounted by a leopard holding a shield with the Royal coat of arms & Garter; the case chased & the side panels engraved with a further coats of arms. Silvered chapter ring with the 12 hours represented in Roman numerals & blued steel pointer for the hours. Mounted on a gilt metal bracket & with a glass dome. . ◼ The clock has a small bird cage style lantern clock movement. The front half of the movement is the going train in the usual form with a verge escapement. The back half of the movement is the strike train. The strike is released by a star wheel on the back of the hour wheel & the hours are counted on a count wheel at the back of the movement. The strike levers are interestingly designed & the hammer is positioned to strike the hours with a sideways blow inside the bell. The strike does not have a fly & is slowed down by a weight mounted with four legs on the fourth wheel of the strike. The later verge now has a pendulum swinging outside the case at the back of the clock. . ◼ There has been much scholarly debate on the historical authenticity of the clock. What is certain is that the case, mechanism & bracket are an 'assembly'; over time it has been substantially altered, most likely of necessity in order to bring about a practical conclusion. . Provenance; . ◼ Reputed to have been given by King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn on the morning of their marriage in 1532.. Bought by Queen Victoria at the sale of Horace Walpole's collection at Strawberry Hill, 13 May 1842; lot 48 £110 5s. . 📷 Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2018 . . #AnneBoleyn #QueenofEngland #Queen #Tudor #TudorPeriod #TudorDynasty #History #Heritage #England #EnglishMonarchy #EnglishHistory #RoyalCollection #BritishMonarchy #Thebritishmonarchy (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br3dGAalREe/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=113ip2qfh31g8
