day 20 (sunday, july 23rd 2023)
Continuing on from yesterday’s theme (which is really today’s) on how the real nature of the objects to which your expectations correspond always end up outstripping your expectations of them, one somewhat uncanny side-effect of this thing has been that it’s returned my internal voice to me in a way that I didn’t expect at all. It hasn’t returned my inner voice to me audibly, which will probably require more neurologically involved methods, but there’s something about reading back long strings of my thought produced in more-or-less real time, complete with the habitual cadences in which those thoughts tend to be elaborated, which seems to have the effect of reinforcing my usual way of thinking, of as it were strengthening whichever neural pathways are involved in my producing inner speech. This is probably partly why it’s said that to improve the effect of “image streaming” you should record your impressions; there’s something about hearing what would otherwise be your inner monologue out loud, in your voice, as you’re recapitulating that monologue, that would presumably cause your brain to associate the sound of your voice with the thoughts you produce.
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what it would take to sustain cultures of high achievement. As Twene Jonas, who of course has all sorts of issues, has said before, a Ghanaian can come to America and manage to live a perfectly functional life, and many Ghanaians will live not only functional but extraordinary and distinguished lives outside the country, so why can’t Ghanaians do the same in Ghana? Various explanations have been given, of course. There’s the selection effects of immigration, there’s the presence of certain institutions in the United States and their absence, there’s the weight of history and colonialism, there’s the tendency of complex systems towards stasis (or towards whatever dynamical direction they’re currently on), etc. But the point is that many of the things that would fix Ghana are not at all beyond the capacity of the government to institute. Investing in high-quality basic education, incentivising investment in the rest of the country and not just Accra, investing in infrastructure and especially a higher-quality road and rail network, cracking down on corruption and incentivising integrity and proper use of government funds, supporting efficient small businesses, cooperating with neighbouring countries on export policy, etc. Like I don’t even have any advanced qualifications in economics or political science, many of these things are just common sense. You want money to flow more freely through the country instead of being concentrated into a few choke points and leaked by unscrupulous and unaccountable government officials and opportunistic capitalists; you want to raise the general level of public literacy and education, you want to create the conditions for Ghanaians to unleash their own creative powers and take control of their own destinies, and so on. There is absolutely no reason, for instance, why it should take hours to get from Bisiw to Ejura, or why class 5 kids should be unable to formulate a basic English sentence. Even in the United States, the basic level of education and generally integration into the more general functioning of the world is such that the most remote corner of the most remote state has living conditions far above those available to many people in relatively affluent areas in Ghana.  None of this is difficult and I could probably wrangle boys-boys on Twitter to make this happen in a year, so why is it going so badly?
