They hyped up the Tyler vid pretty hard as "one of the most historically significant events in card games" and you know what! 100% SPITTIN!

Yeah, like

learning that the kid actually beat it (to be honest, I thought he died, but I didn't really look too deep into it), being able to see the card as a physical object (I never noticed that it had "TYL" on it, so that's a cute touch)

and there's just something about seeing the original art that Tyler drew, alongside the original sketch of the card by Kazuki Takahashi or that there was even another design proposed at all.

That being said, the idea that someone might actually win the auction for the card and start using it in tournament play is hilarious.

Amazons #5: Penthesilea and Achilles

Queen Penthesilea, followed by twelve loyal Amazon warriors, journeys to assist the Trojans at the war for Troy. Some say the queen seeks redemption for accidently killing her sister Hippolyta with a spear throw meant for a stag, while others say the Amazons, with Ares bloodlust coursing through their veins, cannot pass up a chance to enter battle.

At the war for Troy, Queen Penthesilea fells many warriors, proving her elite skill in battle, until she faces off against Achilles, the great Demi-god warrior. She fights savagely, and the pair are well matched, until Achilles spear finds her chest with a lethal wound. As she lay dying, her helmet tumbles off, and Achilles, gazing upon her beauty, is overcome with sorrow, and falls deeply in love.  Another Greek warrior, Thersites, taunts Achilles for his weakness, and Achilles turns on his comrade, killing him. This later prompts Achilles to Journey to Lesbos to purify himself for the murder, before returning to the war at Troy.

This episode from the Trojan war comes from one of the lost epic cycles of the Trojan cycle called the “Aethiopis,” and is attributed to the author Arctinus of Melinus. The Aethiopis dates from around the 7th Century B.C.E is made up of five books, detailing events occurring directly after the Iliad.  Although the epic Aethiopis itself did not survive, and we know of the summary of events from the Chrestomathy, attributed to Proclus.

One thing I love about Greek Myths and tales are these early, elegant examples of dramatic irony and tragedy. Killing an enemy, and then, only after, discovering a love for them; but it’s too late. Again and again, we see these classical characters, whose fatal flaws blind them to some truth, and he or she learns the lesson only too late.  I cant get enough of these bittersweet endings, because I think they exist in the grey zone that mirrors the ambiguity of our own realities.

Warrior princess Arwen, but make it Bearing Hope's Sword canon :D

I really love how the colors turned out :D this burgundy/raspberry palette is just so beautiful and I think it looks great in the greenish Paths of the Dead lighting

Babies, Amount and Names: Jackie/Donna, Jackie/Eric

Jackie/Donna: One kid. They're both career-focused and want to make sure their kid gets as much of their time and attention as possible.

Their name ideas, however, would be at odds. Donna would not cater to Jackie's vanity, instead wanting their kid to have a name all their own. Jackie would argue that naming their kid after a feminist hero of Donna's goes against Donna's reason for not letting Jackie's name be passed onto the kid (Jackie is, after all, her own hero).

They would have to find common ground and compromise. They argue and disagree on each other's massive lists until they finally give in on names they like well enough and go from there.

If a girl, Vanessa. (It has different meanings in different languages. One is related to Venus, Roman goddess of love. Or a Greek goddess associated with butterflies, an insect Jackie has a fondness for if going by many of her accessories on T7S. It's also a popular girl's name in the 1980s.)

If a boy, Tyler. (He's named after Mary Tyler Moore, whom Donna and Jackie both admire for different reasons. Since the name is a middle one for MTM, it skims over the naming-the-kid-after-soneone-else issue -- emphasis on skims.)

Jackie/Eric: Two kids. They have the same naming impasse as Jackie and Donna. Jackie doesn't like outer space or Star Wars, which is a fact Eric had to accept. But Eric, like Donna, isn't going to give into Jackie's vanity.

First girl, Alexandra. (It's an epithet of the goddess Hera that's interpreted to mean one who arrives to save warriors. It's direct translation from Greek is protector/defender of man. Eric calls her Alex while Jackie calls her Lexie.)

First boy, Alexander. (Jackie and Eric both like the power of the name and hope their son will be great -- without burning down a library full of original, one-copy-only historical books. Or killing people to expand an empire.)

Second girl, Eliza Jane. (Eric conceded to Jackie's wish for their names to be represented in one of their children, and they went the initial route. Eric stops himself from calling her E.J. because he doesn't want their daughter thinking she's expected to be a clone of either of her parents.)

Second boy, Benjamin. (Eric slips this Star Wars name past Jackie since she refuses not only to watch the movie but hear about it. The JA in the name satisfies Jackie's need for her name to be represented in her child's.)

Note: I don't choose these names based on what I personally like or dislike. I try to make as in-character choices as possible, and the names in the Jukebox posts represent only a few in-character choices among many.

Khan Jamal Quartet – Dark Warrior

One of the best of vibraphonist Khan Jamal’s SteepleChase albums, this set matches Jamal with the great Charles Tyler (doubling on alto and baritone), the always lyrical bassist Johnny Dyani, and drummer Leroy Lowe. Together they interpret six of Jamal’s originals (plus Tyler’s “Space Traveller,” which was dedicated to Sun Ra), performing colorful inside/outside music full of surprises and variety (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).

'"There's a lot of keyboard warriors that have such a strong opinion on the roles that I play."

After her breakout role in Heartstopper, Yasmin Finney is back on our screens playing trans character Rose Noble in Doctor Who, as the show celebrates its 60th anniversary.

The 20-year-old trans actress tells BBC Newsbeat being part of the cast has given her "a kooky, amazing family", an experience she feels she missed out on.

Yasmin has spoken before about being close to her mother, but the beliefs of much of her extended family mean she has little contact with them.

"I don't really speak to them as much. I kind of cut them off due to my identity," she says.

Using TikTok, where she has almost two million followers, Yasmin has been open about her experience of being a transgender black woman as well as making it as an actress.

Growing up in the "mud of Manchester", she says school was tough but she was able to relive it in a different way while playing Elle in Heartstopper.

"I didn't go to drama school, I didn't have the privilege to see theatre shows every weekend," she says.

Yasmin says she's "super grateful" that her roles so far have let her experience "a little bit of what I've missed as a person growing up".

Yasmin was born in 2003, two years before her now co-stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate were first cast in Doctor Who.

It was their performances as The Doctor and Donna Noble - Rose's mum - that first introduced Yasmin to the Whoniverse as a child.

"I used to be obsessed with David Tennant and Catherine Tate," she says.

Now they've reprised their roles for the 60th anniversary specials alongside Yasmin, she says "it's a bit weird" to think about her fandom.

"But it's just an honour to be with the greats making something so magical."

Also making up an important part of the cast in those formative years was Billie Piper who played Rose Tyler and it didn't go unnoticed by fans that Yasmin's character is also called Rose.

"Everyone was like oh my God she's taken Billie Piper's role, what about Billie Piper? What's happened? What's happened?

"No, guys, I'm simply just named after Rose."

But that added pressure of being aligned with such a beloved character, as well as her trans identity, meant that for Yasmin there has been a downside to being cast in a dream role: online trolls.

"Any sort of franchise that has been going years and you get a black trans woman playing the role, people are going to have their opinions," she says.

"It's so funny because when I get a hate comment, it'll be: 'Your acting was so bad and I hate trans people'.

"Fair enough you had one opinion, but then when you tie my identity into it, it's just kind of unfair."

She can't control the haters, but she can control her response and so Yasmin says she's just focused on protecting her mental health and acing the role.

"Ultimately, I just want to deliver a good performance," she says.

"I want people to laugh, I want people to smile, I want people to cry. And also I just want to be good representation for people that haven't had it."

The need for representation is an issue that doesn't seem to be going away soon for Yasmin.

Both as Elle and Rose, she is a trans actress playing a trans character.

She hopes to be a role model for people like her growing up trans but at the same time, she hopes she'll be able to play a variety of roles.

Debates around which actors should play which roles should be a thing of the past, she thinks.

Actor Eddie Redmayne previously said playing a transgender character in 2015 film The Danish Girl was "a mistake", after some felt a trans actor should have been cast in the role.

"I think there needs to be such a more open space for any actor," Yasmin says.

"If you're a good actor, you're a good actor. It doesn't matter your identity, your sexuality, if you can sell a story, you can sell a story."'

I was just thinking about the top 5 best plot twists I’ve seen/read and I came up with a list. Don’t judge me. This is based on the impact they had on me THE FIRST TIME I saw them/read them. The re-watch or reread factor with the context of the twist is also included in my ranking. 5. 6th sense: the main character is dead all along. I know M Night Shaymalan movies Can get a bit old with the twists. But damn. This one’s crazy. And neither he nor the audience realizes it until the little kid tells him. Then you think about all the moments he had with his wife where you thought she was just angry at him. But it was literally HIM HAUNTING HER!!! Very fun to watch again knowing it and looking at all the details again.

4. Red Queen: Maven betrays Mare and Cal at the same time. I was shook. I thought I had it all figured out. Because I saw Cal betraying Mare right from the start, he was too loyal to the king and crown. But when Maven was able to stand up through his mom’s mind control I audibly gasped and nearly threw the book across the room. The manipulative piece of trash. And man does he become just a great villain to root against. Plus the whole series is just really good. I like that they call out the dismantling of one empire just for another one to take its place and Mare has to reconcile that.

3. the usual suspects: Verbal is Keyser Söze all along. Boy oh boy. I’d heard there was a twist in this movie and I actively avoided it at all costs prior to watching. And then I saw it and was floored. Very intricate plot that is great for re watching. And the fact that all the parts of the story are just made up from different objects in the interrogation room is genius. Great film overall too.

2. haunting of hill house: this is a two for one deal. The big one is that the red room was each of the family’s special rooms the whole time. The treehouse, dance studio, game room, reading room, ect. Then you watch again and you notice the windo and the fact that there’s something red in every room and that all the interactions with the door are the other characters trying to get in. I love it. The other twist about Nell being the bent neck lady is tragic and it messed me up for a week. Nell and Luke have the saddest stories and I love them both

Warrior cats Long Shadows : the three not being Squirrelstar’s kits. My 11 year old world was rocked. Because who else’s kits could they possibly be?! They had to be related to Firestar so who else?! Don’t judge me I was 11. But the impact of that book rocked the rest of the story through OOTS, AVS, and TBC. And honestly is still impacting ASC with the final resolution of Squilf and Bramble’s relationship. Plus kid me was so shocked and its all me and my friends could talk about until the 6th book came out.

I am ten goddamn sets behind but I have to catch up because we’re almost back to The Horniest Goddamn Plane In All Of Magic Canon (that’d be New Phyrexia, babes!) and if I don’t cover that in uncomfortable detail, then what was this blog even for? We got some ground to cover, so let’s get going.

CORE SET 2021

Good news! Unlike Core Set 2020, this one isn’t a complete wash!

Meeks giving vampire-fuckers exactly what they want here. Rose-tinted diaphanous silks & equally-diaphanous bats, the delicate damask patterns, the bridal carry, the victim’s languid pose, the collarbones, the blood - but for me, it’s the contrast between the vampire’s self-possessed hauteur and the trickle of blood down her throat that really makes this work.

Liliana, Waker of the Dead (art by Anna Steinbauer)

Liliana almost always makes the list, of course, but usually she gets here through raw displays of power and dominance. Steinbauer’s taken a different tack here, though, constructing this pastoral idyll centered around Liliana as a Gothic heroine. Is that sharp-edged pensiveness hesitation? Regret? Whatever it is, it’s a vulnerability we don’t usually get to see with her. This is easily, easily my favorite Liliana. It’s also about forty percent more Audrey Hepburn than typical, which. Yeah, that works for me.

KALDHEIM

man i just really do not care for the art direction in Kaldheim if I’m being honest. “viking plane” has a lot of potential and most of the art here is well-executed i just can’t help but feeling like the briefs the artists were given were kind of half-assed. like they have gods of DEATH and FEAR and they just look like whole foods hipsters. still, though! couple of hot valkyries.

You really have to appreciate when someone just fully commits to a vibe. She could have stopped with the corpse paint and the black and gold everything but she went that extra mile for the blue flame wings and the smoldering pillar of the damned.

Yeahhhhh, I knew I could count on Steinbauer to deliver something ineffably sapphic. Hot, broody warrior angel fits the bill. Thank you for your service as always, ma’am.

HONORABLE MENTION: Jorn, God of Winter (art by Magali Villeneuve)

I gotta give credit where credit is due: in one of the drier sets in a very neutered Magic the Gathering era, Villeneuve has made a god who one million percent fucks. This rules.

STRIXHAVEN: SCHOOL OF MAGES

You know, I figured there’d be more candidates at wizard college, if for no other reason than there’d be more girls with glasses - but no, not even Goth Entomologist House OR Bitchy Poet Vampire House produced a single hit between the two of them. Here’s what we do get:

Liliana Vess: MILF professor version. I don’t need to say more than this, the scenario writes itself. Still, I do wanna pause and note the shoulder battlements. This is a woman who knows the value of fortifying gun emplacements, by which, yes, I do mean her tits.

Oh yeah this is genuinely horny. Big owl glasses, perfect facial features, picturesque windblown hair, a dramatic display of power, those curves. I’ve really missed art that manages to be self-indulgent but not boring. More of this!

ADVENTURES IN THE FORGOTTEN REALMS

I have a great deal of resentment about the D&D crossover sets in terms of flavor. You can’t make Lolth, Zariel, and Mordenkainen planeswalkers in Magic canon and then be like oh well but no not really it’s not like they can go to Ravnica or something like that. Motherfucker then they’re not planeswalkers! You didn’t even bother to make Lolth hot! That was a fucking slam dunk! Three different D&D sets and you didn’t even include a single marilith!

I could keep going, at great length, but instead I’m choosing to be responsible and talk about the hot girls.

Kalain, Reclusive Painter (art by Justine Cruz)

Cruz is almost a complete newcomer to Magic the Gathering here, which is really impressive because Kalain is the clear stand-out of this set. I personally wouldn’t choose to paint in my finest red doublet, but obviously this is a deficiency in my commitment to the Byronic artist Aesthetic. Obviously I don’t glower intensely enough. Obviously I don’t dress enough like a mildly-genderfluid Prussian vampire. Rest assured Kalain will be making none of these rookie mistakes!

I genuinely have so much gender envy about Kalain, holy shit.

OKAY progress made. This was the tail end of the drought. We got two Innistrad sets next, and whatever else you wanna say about those sets, I’m pretty sure we get more hits in even just one of them than we did in the four sets covered here together. Next time we got: girls accessorizing with bones, girls accessorizing with snakes, Hot Crossbow Autumn, woman laughing alone with shovel, dog mom, and so, so many vampires.

They are (TWENTY SEVEN) and looks a great deal like (TYLER POSEY), and they specialize in (PLANT MANIPULATION) magic. If they are a senior warden, this is where you list three or four abilities outside of their specialized magick that they can do - must all fall under the same category, however. Those that have interacted with them can easily see that they are (HAPPY AND ENERGETIC), but that they are also (NAIVE AND SELFLESS). (ACE, 29, CST, HE/HIM, NONE)

Emilio Madrid had been lucky. To have been both Blessed by Etia and Blessed by Fityx. However, Emilio had been terrified at first. When his magical abilities first formed, it had been terrifying to the young man. To watch the plants bend and move unnaturally was something out of a nightmare. So going to the institute seemed like it was for the best. To go some place where he could get his powers under control. It sounded like a dream. To finally feel safe.

But fuck, was it hard. To leave his family behind for so long...To give up everything. Just to have control of his power. It had sucked, and it had led to much loneliness and sadness. But over time? Emilio healed...And adapted. And learned. Emilio learned how to control his power, and he did so almost flawlessly in his opinion. He wished to use his plants to help heal people. After all, many plants could do just that or help advance the healing process. But he was seen to be something more...Something useful.

A junior warden of Nok. Emilio is willing to use his powers just about anyway he possibly can to protect the kingdom and help the royal family. He was born to a family of warriors, so he wasn't unused to combat since his fathers had trained him so much when he was first born. But for now? He was simply doing what he was told...And he was okay with that.

Narrowly escaping the Spartan warriors in pursuit, Theseus later gives Helen to his mother for safekeeping until she comes of age. According to Homer, Pirithous was born from Zeus (in the form of a stallion), mating with Dia. While others place Pirithous as the son of King Ixion. Pirithous and Hippodamia give birth to a son, Polypoetes, who, having been one of the suitors of Helen, later became a famous hero of the trojan war. He led forty ships, and was even one of the warriors to hide in the trojan horse. Helen and her siblings have a bizarre and fascinating origin story. Helen’s mother was Leda, a beautiful Spartan queen. Zeus, lusting for her, transformed into a swan and flew into her embrace escaping an eagle, and the pair coupled. Leda also slept with her mortal husband, King Tyndareus, and later, born from two eggs were Helen and Clytmnestra and twin boys; Castor and Pollux. The Temple of Artemis Orthia was religious site for Spartan boys and girls. Orthia was originally a local goddess of fertility, nature, and vegetation. Later this goddess was combined with Artemis to create the dual goddess “Artemis Orthia.” Ancient scholars mention a rite-of-passage ceremony where young spartan boys were whipped as they attempted to steal cheese from the altar. Young girls had their initiations as well, with chorus dances and fertility rites.

Elizabeth Swann was raised to be an aristocrat, to be a good wife to her husband and raise his heirs. She was being trained since infancy, but in reality Elizabeth was drowning. She hated this life, she wanted more to life than just go to fancy parties and to follow the line. She wanted adventure, freedom, love, to need no man to save her, to pick up a sword and fight like a pirate. Very unladylike things, but it is what her fiery independent soul craved and she would get it.  

MODERN AU

Elizabeth is a young socialite, her Father a Prime Minister in the UK and her mother a baroness who doesn't have time to spare for anyone, much less her daughter. Elizabeth had grown accustom to her parents absence, at 16 she had moved to be with her grandparents in the Caribbean and fell in love with St Lucia. Spending most of her days on the beach and learning how to sail, but after hearing of hearing her Fathers illness she quickly returned to London.

Mary is a young artist, living in Edinburgh, Scotland, in a small but open flat. Her talent was in sculpting and creating things with her hands. She often created sculptures of people, lovers, singles, warriors or whatever she was commissioned for. She was often with friends on her free time, going to pubs and going to the clubs, but she was never really in any relationships. She found them a waste of time, even though she longed for that great love she reads about.

She is often called Arwen Everstar, as well as being compared to Lúthien, a beautiful elf that gave up her eternal life to be with her love. Many had been awed with her beauty, like Aragon, a young Dunadan who had fallen in love with her at first sight, but she had not returned his love. She had never fallen for any of her admirers. Now Arwen is traveling to visit her grandparents in Lothlórien, maybe she’d find some adventure.

MODERN AU

Arwen is a Countess, living in the country and spending most of her days in her garden. Her temperament affectionate and charitable, it was rare to catch her in a bad mood. She only went to the city when she was throwing her annual charity balls, along side her family. Other times she was there to volunteer her time to help give out food or go to hospitals and help in anyway she could.

Lachlan Green was a 30 year old man, who is a went to school to be Doctor to help people, but when he graduated his country went to war. He was drafted and instead of healing, Lachlan found talent in his shooting abilities.

Klaus Mikaelson is an original hybrid, werewolf and vampire. He has been described as a cold, vindictive, malevolent, and quick to anger man. No one can cross him without your heart being ripped out and drained of blood.  He loved no one if you were to ask him, but there was a reason why he carried his family with him. Secretly he was a man who longed for stability and acceptance, but of course he would never tell you that.

Doesn't need a modern AU, Klaus can play in any time period.

Williams family had always been in the employee of the crown, so it wasn't a surprise he found himself there working for the Royal family, but he wasn't just some servant. He was actually the Kings bodyguard and personal friend.

Lord Peridan, was a descendant of the noble House of Frank but after the White Witch invaded Narnia. His grandfather fled with his family to Archenland and was in exile. Once the Pevensie’s defeated Jadis, Peridan returned to Narnia and swore his loyalty to his Kings and Queens. Now a Knight and Lord of Narnia, Peridan protected his majesties and land faithfully. Years of peace followed, but all good things must come to an end. His Kings and Queens went on a hunt for the white stag, but never returned. Peridan looked for them tirelessly, desperate to find them to no avail. He had to accept they were gone and stepped up in their place. Becoming King Peridan, The Devoted.

MODERN AU

Peridan was a protector of Narnia, but when he went out in search for his lost Kings and Queens. He instead found a cave and through that cave a new world. What does he do in a world not his own?

Rillian/ 24/ Single/ Narnia and crossover/ FC-Bradley James

'We are young once, so lets not waste it.'

Rillian is a young and brave Prince of Narnia, His father is King Caspian and his mother, a descendent of a star. He never really cared to be King one day, he wanted freedom and adventure, but was tied to his royal duty. He had heard of the many stories of his Father and The Kings and Queens Of Old. He wished he could meet them, sadly, the Pevensie family was never to return. 

MODERN AU

Ever since he was a young boy, Rilian looked forward to joining the military and when he was able to join, he did. Going through vigorous training, Rilian soon found himself on the best team he could join. Soon him and his team were deployed on a mission and lets just say things didn't go to plan.
