Last Tuesday we talked some about typecasting at Firefly Press - and we talked about setting type in hot metal on either Monotype or Linotype machines. Thanks the to Director of Communications at Rare Book School, Jeremy Dibbell, we are now aware of the fantastic resource that is Printing Films - many of which highlight the Linotype machine.

The film above, which was until recently very hard to view, is about the last issue of the New York Times set in hot metal with a Linotype. There is also a discussion of photo typesetting in the film - and the title is a reference to the lack of a “backspace” key on a linotype. We must admit to watching more than two of these in our spare time...

Happy Typeface Tuesday!

The illustration above shows the three stages of typesetting for printing with moveable type using a printing press. Titled “Imprimerie en lettres, L'opération de la casse,” it was created by Denis Diderot in approximately 1762 and can be found in the French Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et métiers, par une sociéte de gens de lettres.

“ZA” 🍕🍕🍕 Day 008/100 of #100DaysofCreatingColorfully for #The100DayProject so another #TypefaceTuesday! I was feeling in a better state of mind creating, compared to yesterday’s project! Yahoo! 💃🏻 . Not gonna lie I was totally going to have my project today be calligraphy. 🖋 (Lets just say I still need a lot of practice.) Since that didn’t work out in my favor I decided to start writing down words I like and do a themed word like how I did for my last Typeface Tuesday. . That’s when I chose “za!” 🍕 A slang term for “pizza” that I wish was used more! As I was creating ZA I realized it has a certain similarity to the LA Dodger’s logo, which I’m happy now that I am officially a Californian that moved here from Ohio. (We like our Cincinnati Red’s.) I, myself am not a big sports fan. I’m the artsy-fartsy type, meaning I prefer to use that time creating. But I am a fan of some za…HUGE FAN! 🍕🍕🍕 . Another realization is I use so much teal, in everything I can create. I can’t help it! It’s my favorite color and I seriously have teal everything. At one point I even had teal heart, I don’t mess around. 💙💚 . Overall, I am super pleased with the outcome and really getting into the Illustrator life and warming up to more digital art! It's back y'all! I know I've been slacking on my blog and I'm sure you've probably missed Typeface Tuesday : )

Don't fret - I've got a new ad today that I found on Spotify. It popped up during one of the commercial breaks.

*side note* I LOVE Spotify but still not enough to pay for their ad free service ; ) Besides, I'm one of the few who still likes looking at ads.

I'm not typically a huge fan of car ads or cars in general but I though this car ad was very nicely done. Good choice of typography, clean & simple layout, and nice colors.
