Only a moment after they sat next to each other Beakley lifted Black Heron's right arm in her hand, feeling the weight of the metal. Running her fingers along the seams, sure there were gadgets hidden inside she hadn't discovered yet.

Eventually she moved on to the metal hand, testing how sharp the end of her fingers were before studying the knuckle joints, running her fingers over them. Heron's hand twitched a few times.

At last, the director slowly turned to glare at her. "I can feel that, you know. It tickles."

"I'm aware." Beakley didn't look up.

Heron rolled her eyes, looking back at the book she was holding with one hand. "Find any of my secret weapons?"

"Not yet," Beakley replied, lifting Heron's prosthetic so it caught the light better. "But I did find this," the spy slowly and lightly ran her finger down the middle of Heron's palm.

Her hand spasmed, and Heron yanked it out of Beakley's reach. "Hey! Do that again and these fingers will end up in your throat."

Beakley chuckled, reaching for Heron's hand once more. "Is that a challenge?"

"Found the target," Black Heron murmured as she held out a hand toward her temporary partner.

22 took it, rising from her seat as Heron tugged her up. "You're sure?"

The director nodded, leading her to the edge of the dance floor. Her other hand slid to 22's waist. "The little sparrow in the navy dress. Their dress slipped- they have the markings."

22 leaned in close, talking discreetly in Heron's ear as they stepped back and forth in time with the music. "We'll need to lead them away before things get... unpleasant."

"Shall I leave that to you?" Heron asked, swaying slightly in 22's arms.

"No, I need to be here." 22 pointed out. "You should get them, that shouldn't be too hard."

22's beak was so close to Heron's ear she could feel her breath, her mouth against her feathers. "In this outfit you're irresistible."

Black Heron shivered, and took in a sharp breath when she heard 22 chuckle, the sound vibrating in her chest against Heron's. It took the director a moment to collect herself.

"That- that sounds like a plan."

Reading Aquarium then Meteor Impact hurt me. So much. I am a sucker for characters with restricted childhoods getting to explore the wider world/cinderella plots, and I am a sucker for the isolation of the divine and empathizing with the monster so MAN. MAN. MAN.

i do well when i can be emotionally honest with people. i front-load my feelings and let that open expressiveness be the barometer for the conversation. (some people have used .... " uwu culture " (i hate calling it that.....) and been incredibly toxic and bad people to be around so. like. It's a Poisoned well to begin with... )

oh it's been a while since my brain felt it necessary to validate whether or not i was traumatized by an event that definitely gave me trauma symptoms

the urge to feel like i made up all these years of reacting in the ways i have and all the progress I've made unpacking and reprocessing my frameworks for things..... all because i haven't seen anyone else like me

my brain, bouncing between either i made it all up/overreacted to something harmless or that something worse Must have happened (in addition to what i do remember) in order for me to have reacted this way

it's crazy-making and i would like my brain to please stop

i will love and heal myself no matter what did or did not happen. i will take care of myself and find healthy coping strategies, no matter how bad it was or could have been.

my brain is seeking support in one of the ways it knows how -- finding people with similar experiences. just because i can't find written confirmation that my exact experiences were traumatic does not mean that it did not traumatize me. the years of avoidance and fixation and identity confusion and flashbacks and dissociation were not playing pretend. denial and minimization are strategies to cope - i am noticing my inclination for them at present and remaining mindful.

Think about this THINK ABOUT THIS. Royalty Mads and Black Heron being the only people who can beat each other in a fight. To everyone else they’re untouchable but they stand a chance against each other

like- imagine being the most powerful deadliest person in all the known surrounding area and knowing it. you know and everyone else knows just how dangerous you are and to cross you is death. Your own king holds you in high favor and keeps you close because he knows if he doesn’t he’d be dead in a heartbeat. Then one day your top student, your prized pupil, the kid you raised and who holds you as almost a parental figure and who you’ve spent his entire life pushing to be just like you, actually beats you in a practice fight. You haven’t lost a battle in over a decade and you lose a practice spar to your kid. You demand you go again and you win (and teach him a lesson in the process), but you know he could beat you again. He’s starting to become your one weakness, and not in an emotional sense. He’s suddenly gone from beneath you, someone you can kick around, to genuinely dangerous. You didn’t realize making him just like you would make him a threat.

and on the other side of that imagine having this parental figure who’s hurt you, abused you, pushed you to your limit way too many times, who you look up to and love more than anything else your whole life, and finally being strong enough to beat her. To have a chance at standing up to her. And you expect her to be proud, because this is what she’s been teaching you to do your whole life, right? That’s what all of this has been for? But instead she’s livid- and immediately proves she can still beat you. And she goes harder than she has in years- she doesn’t let you tap out, she fights until you’re nearly unconscious and unable to fight back. It’s not practice anymore, she’s proving she’s still better, she’s still scary. You’ve long surpassed everyone you grew up with in skill, the only person who can still beat you is your mentor parental figure, who isn’t happy you’re finally catching up to her. You’ve become what she’s always wanted- but for some reason it isn’t enough.

And then imagine them meeting in a fight a decade later, sworn enemies, and fighting for their lives against each other. The closest thing they ever had to family and now they’re wholeheartedly ready to kill each other with their bare hands. They’re the only ones who can stand a chance against each other- and for once neither of them is certain they’ll win.
