Clean Air Zones
Are they fair? Clean Air Zones (CAZ) and Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) have recently ben in the news here in the UK. Primarily this is related to an unexpected by election result: Conservatives retained Boris Johnson’s former parliamentary constituency, albeit by a dramatically reduced margin. The majority went from thousands to a few hundred votes. This parliamentary constituency is within a…

I've seen an alarming increase in pushback against the literal existence of the climate crisis lately, especially during summer with massive heatwaves and wildfires and it is absolutely horrific how people are just absorbing the idea that it's all a hoax and that it's good shutting down activists and protestors who have now come further to the point where this now REALLY NEEDS TO BE SAID

Conservative party staff and activists are secretly operating a network of Facebook groups that have become a hotbed of racism, misinformation and support for criminal damage. An investigation has identified 36 groups that appear to be separate grassroots movements opposing the expansion of ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) schemes to reduce air pollution. They do not say they were set up by the Conservatives as part of a coordinated political campaign. The closed groups – which have a combined membership of 38,000 – have been a forum for Islamophobic attacks on Labour’s London mayor Sadiq Khan, with members calling him a “terrorist sympathiser” and a “khaki punt” and saying they would pay to get him “popped”. Other posts promote white supremacist slogans, antisemitic conspiracy theories and have encouraged the destruction of Ulez enforcement cameras. The findings by Greenpeace’s investigative unit, Unearthed, shared with the Observer, are the latest controversy to embroil the party over its campaigning tactics and attacks on Khan. Its former deputy chairman, Lee Anderson, was suspended in February after claiming “Islamists” were controlling the London mayor, and a Tory attack video used scenes of a panicked crowd at a New York subway station to claim Londoners were in fear of crime. Senior Tories have made posts in some of the groups, including the London mayoral candidate Susan Hall, who is a member of six groups and has posted in two. Hall did not respond to requests for comment. The findings also raise questions about transparency. It is not made clear to the groups’ members that they are linked to the Conservatives. But most share the same three administrators, believed to be two CCHQ staffers and an activist who helped run an MP’s digital campaigns. Rachel Cromie, an administrator of all 36 groups, is a Tory councillor in Haywards Heath, Sussex. Her current register of interests lists Conservative campaign HQ in a section on employment and she has previously been described as an area campaign manager for the party. An earlier register of interests shows she was head of operations for a political consultancy founded by a former consultant at Cambridge Analytica. Cromie did not respond to requests for comment. Another Conservative party employee, who has been one of its digital campaign managers since February this year, is an administrator of 27 groups. Others include councillors, party officials and a local mayor.

Maybe I'm just being incredibly childish, but I find the acronym ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) so funny.
"U LEZ!" is what they used to scream at me in the corridors at school, so to see politicians debating it as a Serious Topic is amusing me greatly.

ULEZ cameras in London are being covered with cardboard boxes, wires cut, or lenses spray painted.
These cameras record images of license plates in the "ultra low emission zone" and report what kind of emissions your vehicle produces and how much and where you travel.

Met appeals for witnesses after two arrests over ULEZ bomb
Careful search: police conduct a forensic examination of the Sidcup bombing scene earlier this month. They have yet to check Mayor Perry’s dodgy Facebook page, though After calling in the anti-terrorism unit when a ULEZ camera was bombed earlier this month, the Metropolitan Police has issued a renewed appeal for witnesses to come forward over the multi-million-pound wave of vandalism to public…

The Bentley's Guide to Driving in London
For those who can't use miracles
Tip 3:
Visiting London by car? Unless you are me, (because I’m special,) you probably will not find a parking space in central London. Book ahead online, or park further out and train in. Also, London has two charge zones which you should probably know about:
ULEZ (ultra low emission zone) where you have to pay if you are below a certain emissions standard (check online)
Congestion Zone - marked by big C signs on and around the road near the center of London - if you go in this zone you have to pay per day
I don’t know if we pay either, to be fair. I assume Crowley deals with all my paperwork….

Really? I think the Department of Transport are a little late in addressing this issue!
Tumblr media
Let me go through this as an independent observer:
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. These ban most motor vehicles from using roads in mainly residential areas. Not practical, and many residents are against them as they increase traffic congestion/pollution on main roads.
20mph zones. These are sensible near schools, or in other areas where there are a large amount of pedestrians. Every urban road in Wales now has a speed limit of 20mph... as well as many roads in the London area. I agree that slower speeds reduce the risk of serious injury, but on wide roads with clear visibility it causes drivers to become frustrated... and some enraged motorists will take unnecessary risks to get pass the slow moving traffic. [My personal gripe is that drivers do not look at road signs... so, even when they are allowed to go faster they still drive at 18mph!]
Stop councils profiting from traffic restrictions. I hope this happens... but. I have my doubts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now begins a few miles from my Kent residence on the boundary of Greater London. It does little, if anything to reduce pollution levels!
Upgrade traffic lights. Yes... this is something needs to be done, and monitored on a regular basis. Since early January gas main replacement work has been taking place on the A25 close to my Kent residence. The boys in charge of the temporary traffic signals have been onsite most days between 6am and 6pm to try and minimise delays (and they have done a good job... most of the time. Thank you.) They also changed the phase of the permanent traffic lights at Sundridge, which has helped.
Faster roadworks. How, for goodness sake? What does need to be done is better planning. In point 4, I mentioned the gas main replacement work currently being done close to where I live. Under the same section of road is a high pressure water main which has burst several times in recent years. I think local residents may be a little bit annoyed if Thames Water decide to renew this pipeline just after three months of disruption caused by the gas company's work!

... Ultra Low emission zone rules which come into force on Aug 29 across greater London. Groups of activists calling themselves "Blade Runners" are disabling hundreds of cameras already"

Britain - 2032
You pull out of your £22 per hour parking space and the ANPR camera clocks you onto road, immediately charging you £15 for the day and £2 per mile after that. Arriva own the roads now, and the fares seem to go up every month. You haven't been able to switch over to electric yet, due to the battery shortage, so you head to the fuel station to fill up.
The unleaded pump is 949.9p a litre now. Part of that is the recent Super Duty the government added at the last budget, but the biggest hike was when Russia invaded Hungary.
You're rationed to 20 litres, so your bill is just shy of £190. You round it off to £200 with a coke and a packet of gum. Getting back on the road you notice a Serco road block and end up stuck in the queue. Since you're inside the M25 you're in the Super Mega Ultra Low Emissions Zone (SMULZ) and subject to a per minute charge for sitting in traffic, engine running or not. The ANPR cameras enforce it automatically, so you check your Arriva app to see how much it's costing you so far. You're still under £20 when you get to the front of the queue, which is a nice relief.
The barrier let's a car go, then the gasmasked Serco officer lowers it back down and approaches you with his taser at the ready. Another officer checks your tyre tread and pressure, then moves onto your exhaust emissions, counts the chips on your windscreen, inspects your dents and rust. They're looking for reasons to fine you. It's all they do since they took over the policing contract from the disbanded Met. Eventually you're passed a bill for their on the spot safety check. You passed, so it's only the £50 service fee.
You're ushered on and eventually you're sat in a traffic jam on the M25. All 16 lanes are open, but there's been another autolorry crash and it's taking a long time to put out the battery fires. Eventually you make it to your appointment at your local doctors surgery, a mere 56 miles from home. Once you pass security you're asked for your Bupa number. The reception computer informs you that your premium is suspended because you visited Gregg's 3 times in January. There is no NHS treatment available for you since you're over 18 and under 85, so if you want to proceed with the appointment it will be £855. You pay it up front, then make your way to the doctor's office.
When you're done you head over to the pharmacy for your prescription, it's gone up to £1,330. You pay, then head back to the car to administer your insulin shot. You step over a dead body in the doorway, the security bot tells you not to be concerned, that someone will remove the body at some point today.
As you get to your car a man comes running up to you asking if that's insulin in the bag. He begs, pleads, tells you his daughter needs it and they can't afford it. You pull your gun and tell him to back off. He's just a distraction though, you feel the knife plunge into your neck, the next thing you know you're leaning on your bonnet, blood oozing out of the wound. They run off with your prescription.
You sit in the car, pushing an old sweater into the wound, feeling faint and wondering how long you have before you pass out. It's a 55 minute drive to A&E and your credit card is maxed out.
As your blood pressure drops and your vision starts to blur you remember when things were cheaper and people weren't so desperate. Your watch pings, reminding you that you've overstayed your parking time and the fine is £1,000.
With your final breath, you think to yourself 'can you imagine how bad it would be if Corbyn were in charge'.
