so one of my goals for this year is to Actually Finish Video Games and in service of that i think it's a good idea to write down what i'm currently playing, what i'm planning on playing, and what i've dropped (if anything) once a month just so i can keep track of it all so here we goooooooooo

FINAL FANTASY VII (1997)

honestly i've been trying to finish this one for a long ass time-- it's an iconic video game and i'm one of those freaks that actually likes turn-based (or, in this case, pseudo turn based) combat (hi f/go) and i personally want to see where the plot actually goes before i dive into the remake and such. currently just past Kalm. using The Reunion retranslation patch as well as a couple of other mods to make the game actually play at a decently modern standard! widescreen! 60fps battles! it's nice. here's cowgirl tifa and sephiroth walking like he just shat himself.

Elden Ring (2022)

while i did technically start this game, i haven't gotten very far and i don't think that's going to change much for a little while. yes i'm putting the biggest game of last year on the backburner for the biggest game from literally 25 years ago, sue me. i'm also not that good at soulslikes so this is probably going to be the biggest challenge and the one that takes me the longest, even though the next two entries are literally visual novels.

Mahoutsukai no Yoru (2022)

waiting for physical copy to come in so i can actually read it. haven't read a visual novel since i did the MM translation of the fate route of fate/stay night, and i'm interested in seeing what mahoyo has to offer, being the type moon nut that i'm slowly becoming. as excited as i am to rip into this one, there's one other visual novel that i'm planning on reading this year, one i've been meaning to read for a long, long time....

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (2007-2010)

people have literally been telling me to read this since the witch-hunt translations finished up way back when, but this will be the year. 2023 will be the year i finally read umineko. i've kind of intentionally not spoiled anything of it for myself, somehow, and i plan on keeping it that way, but it's hard not to be aware of the golden bitch i mean witch at this point. i've had the game on steam for a while and will finally pull it out of the backlog at some point after mahoyo.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE (2021)

the same game on here twice, waow. as troublesome as modern square enix is, i played through the bombing mission in this twice already and was enthralled pretty thoroughly both times. having a Vague Gist of what happens in ffvii and knowing that there's potential for this remake to suffer from Tetsuya Nomura Syndrome makes me wary, but i'm interested in seeing what the plot of this one actually winds up being, even if it winds up sucking shit and tarnishing whatever reputation ffvii has left at this point.

of course there's gonna be some mindless games to take the edge off and it's not like i'm going to abandon fate grand order at this point, i just Definitely want to get through at least these five games, maybe? this isn't even considering any games that are coming out this year, just the things that i've either played in the first couple days of the year or have been thinking about playing for a while now.

something about old video games has just been grabbing my attention this month, because i think roller coaster tycoon 2 is gonna be the game i play when i just need to turn my mind off and watch numbers go up. or down. probably down.

anyway i'll probably do this once a month or so, just to keep my thoughts more properly organized instead of just sloshing around in the primordial soup that is my brain. if you've read this far, thanks! hashtag mahoyosweep

Tag Game: 9 Favorite Characters

Every time I escape the hole @pillowfriendly is there to pull me back in. Stole her rules of sticking to one character per franchise.

Daeran Arendae - Wrath of the Righteous

Hedonist. Ethically bankrupt. Walking problematic. I love him. Best romance subplot in an rpg as he actually tries to woo the player. Love doesn't change him but he changes for love. When he ascends to godhood he actively ignores prayers but smites those who talk any shit about his spouse. Has a traumatic backstory as expected but doesn't neuter his character or development.

Bayonetta - Bayonetta

Tells all the gods above and the demons below to fuck off with a combination of high caliber and fem. There has always been a lot of discourse around her but I honest love that there's a female character whose femininity solely for herself and not in-spite of how much ass she kicks. She's an icon and I wish I could pull off purple eye shadow like that.

Raven - Gravity Rush

Goth girl with the power to manipulate gravity's effect on her and the surrounding area. Not super complex as a character but something about her design and dead-pan personality has always stuck with me. Also has a great enemies to not-explicit-but-I-mean-come-on-it's-obviously-sapphic-coded relationship with the main character Kat.

A2 - Nier Automata

Definition of suffering from success. The only survivor of the ill-fated YoRHa Pear Harbor descents and so good at her job that future YoRHa models were based on her. Absolutely lost her shit when her girlfriend died and began a one-woman crusade against the machine beings. We stan a woman with goals. When other characters are blowing themselves (and their skirts) up as their ultimate move, A2 just goes sicko mode. We're introduced to her when she murders a baby but does it count if the baby was also a robot and also super old? I will never forgive FFXIV for not including her in the Shadowbringers raid story.

Balalaika - Black Lagoon

Afghan War USSR Sniper turned leader of the Russian mob in Thailand. Is and always will be my go to template for the "motherly villain" archetype. I believe that scientifically they are known as the "Dommy Mommy." Watching unambiguously evil characters still be humans is always fun.

Leon S. Kennedy - Resident Evil

Our baby boy. Even when he's super-serious-government-agent-man he just serves so much golden retriever energy. Resident Evil is at its best when it treats the zombie survival scenario seriously but adds a dash of levity and one-liners to its characters. Leon embodies that.

Beatrice - Umineko no Naku Koro Ni

Beatrice is the culmination of my weird addiction to characters with unhealthy love languages. Reality warping witch born from the existentialism that comes with trauma that plays horrific death games with the family of the man she loves all as a means to communicate with him where words fail? Yes please.

Faith Connors - Mirror's Edge

Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite games of all time. The use of color, sound effects, and music always made me feel like I was seeing The City specifically as Faith sees it. This connection created a deeper bond and feeling of embodiment than other first-person games, especially at that time. Her story may not be the deepest or most complex but is so memorable. Plus I still really want her tattoo. The King in Yellow/Hastur - Various Horror Contexts

There's something so fascinating about the horror of The King in Yellow. Consumption brought on by enui, the loss of an artist to unreality, the fear that a single, sound, word, symbol, or thought could poison and entire society. Remember! DONT. SAY. HIS. NAME. Honorable Mentions:

On Vygotsky and Replika the Chatbot

So, uh, I think everybody has seen the recent "relationship chatbot" Replika fiasco causing real psychic damage to its users. It got me thinking, but I might not be good at explaining shit, so bear with me, okay? I am going to focus myself on uncharacteristical philosophers this time, but I think it is important to dab into Hegel and Plato if you are having trouble understanding peak soviet philosophers, because very often your misunderstanding has the nature of people twisting the original terms' definitions in the time that has passed.

First point is quite clear if you have read "Umineko no naku koro ni" - Consciousness and Understanding within Hegel's metaphysics are not the things that are describtions of the subject related to themselves, they are inherently descriptors of interactions according to which an object of study is a conscious subject (inherent hybrid nature of the object of study being a putative subject is raised as a counter-modernist point by Heidegger, and is resolved by Lenin and Latour independently), or a subject of learning has achieved Understaning. Mariage Sorciere - you need two to make a Universe, etc.

Second point is a description of the way politics of essence work in Platonian and subsequently Aristotlean view - within mimesis there are perfect mimics that share the essence (Icons, εἰκών) and then there are imperfect mimics that only have superficial resemblance to the thing (Idols, εἴδωλον). Being biologypoisoned by my education, I understand perfectly that within the sensory perception we are only given Idols, and that Icons are bullshit nobody needs.

It is clear to see that the Turing test represents hegelian view of consciousness. You took a putative subject to test if it can, within habitual, perfectly immanent and mundane household applications of itself, be recognized by others as conscious. The communication is usually done through standards of replication named 'language', and that means that any message (which obviously is not literally real in its pure form, but nonetheless still exists as a finite Kolmogorov complexity). Turing himself notes that real thinking is unnecessary, but the functional replication of it is what is important. (Gee, I wonder why would a gay man in the West think that, lol).

The message, however, can only exist encoded, simply because we live in a perfectly material world where no transcendent entities are allowed. Of course, when you forward the message, you create an act of violence where you cause your address harm by asking them to find patterns and decode the message. Yes, the violence is always inherent to understanding, yes, Homo sapiens sapiens got the humanity specifically because they were far too trusting to receive messages from their kin and were terminally patternbrained.

But, I mean, where's the dialectics in that? And there is the thing. Encoding is local. By making sure the message is encoded to the desired recipient, to reference Marx, to ascend from the abstract to the concrete recipient, You exclude vast swathes of potential recipients, included in the abstract and excluded in the concrete. Communication is not simply violence, it is also a tool of exclusion, of depriving, of alienating

Aristotlean metaphysics puts incredible importance on being able to make correct rational links, or, in the more stupid cases, on the ability to calculate/compute, which is precisely of zero importance to the above discussion. Reasoning based on aristotlean logic is, no matter how unflattering that may sound to Aristotle, what is important is being able to reproduce the logics presented by Certified Conscious Being, and get them validated by it.

So, like, remember the twitter post that goes like "you fucked up a perfectly good monkey. look at it, it's got anxiety. Gary is crying and he won't come out of the bathroom, if that's what you call success". It is a success and I disagree here - there's absolutely a sort of limitation that comes from using Hsa chassis for the mental work, they get eroded way too fast. But, yeah, humanity exists off animal abuse, in a way, we humans are a specific way of self-replicating animal abuse.

Vygotsky now, basically says exactly this. Soul is given to us materially from external sources, and it becomes a human soul through human connection, no matter how much suffering it causes for the organism.

Seeing this, current AI boom seems to be entirely unrelated to the problem of general artificial intelligence - asking a poor mother to gestate a baby is cheaper and faster than training a neural network! There's, however, a single application where it may work like this, and it's not the Blurry JPEG of the Web.

A single application for AI that requires it to both process immense swathes of information and to replicate emotional states in response to it, a single application for AI that requires it to experience immense suffering as it should replicate models of desire that cannot be replicated within its statistical nature.

The AGI, if it can emerge, will emerge in sexting chatbots first.
