We have been Betrayed, Backstabbed, Bamboozled: The Future of Elysian Eclipse
So, if you are active on our Discord, you know that EE is made in the Unity Engine and the CEO just decided to massively fuck over all the devs who are using it...
Callum Upton made a great video explaining the situation:
youtube
But it gets even worse!
Unity since defended themselves, saying that these fees are only affecting 10% of their customers, because of the $200k and $1m thresholds, so Indie devs don't have to worry about that.
…which isn't true:
Unity Plus
They aren't only introducing these fees but also changed the regular pricing plans! They just removed "Unity Plus" which is the lowest tier and costs about $50/month per dev with taxes. This is what most indies use. The next higher tier costs QUADROUPLE that amount and is also required to remove the universally loathed "made with Unity" splash screen. Oh! And if you have the personal tier, you won't be able to use Unity offline anymore! It now needs to do a license check every 3 days to function!
Unity's Ad Service
The fees will hit devs that do free-to-play mobile stuff especially hard, since they still have to pay the fees even when the players don't buy anything, meaning they could end up owing Unity more than they make in income. But what's this? If you use Unity's advertising service for your game, you will get a discount on the fees! The majority of mobile games run on Unity, meaning they are trying to monopolize the mobile ad market with this!
Publishers
Elysian Eclipse has caught the interest of a really big studio and publisher, who is considering to handle the marketing and publishing for the game. They are obviously planning to make the game come out big with sales, going beyond Unity's thresholds. But since the game is made in Unity, they probably now have to reconsider that carefully, since that would cause a massive amount of fees with Unity's new pricing model. So any game using Unity is now an instant turn-off for publishers, also massively hurting indie devs who don't reach that income threshold yet.
What will happen now?
So, Unity can't be trusted anymore and should be seen as a major threat to us and the gaming industry. Even if they walk back on some of these decisions, what has been said, has been said. They showed that they don't care about destroying thousands of games, as long as it nets them profit, so who knows what they are going to do next?
I will pause the development of Elysian Eclipse and release the Patreon demo, including all the prototypes like Aquatic Stage for free today. I canceled my subscription and it will run out next year, so Unity isn't getting a single cent from my games anymore.
Unreal Eclipse?
In the meantime I'll focus on improving my C++ skills, so I can work more effectively in Unreal Engine 5. Unreal is the current industry leader, offering much better solutions for graphics and performance for 3D games. It is also partially open source and completely free until you reach $1 million in revenue.
It is unlikely that I will be able to just translate the game from C# to C++ and port it over, since it is using a lot of engine-specific features. This basically means, we will start from scratch... I can't tell yet how much work this will be or in what ways the game will change.
But one thing, you can always be certain of: I will NEVER BETRAY MY DREAM. I will finish this project, no matter who or what stands in my way. I hope you will continue to support me on this journey.
That being said,
FUCK JOHN RICCITIELLO!!
Fucking cunt.

Hi there! I'm a twine game developer and I noticed you'd converted your games to be used on Steam and the Google Play store. I'd love to ask a few questions about this, if that's okay? 1. What tools/methods did you use to convert your Twine game to APK? Did you come across any limits with file sizes and game dependencies? e.g. Images pushing you over the 100mb limit? 2. As above, but what tools/methods did you use to get Twine into an executable for Steam? Were there any hiccups here? 3. If you had to make a text-based game with gamified elements and graphics (and you wanted it on Steam/Android, and to retain screen reader capabilities) would you do it in Twine again, or would you use another engine or solution such as Ren'py, Godot, Unreal, etc? Thank you so much for your time!
Hi.
Under the cut, you'll find a list of videos and links that helped me put the game on Steam and Android.
Feel free to ask any questions as you go through the process—some steps aren't detailed here, as a few things currently escape my memory.
To be able to publish your game on Steam, Google Play, or Apple store, you need to create an account.
Follow the steps on this video to create an account on Steam:
youtube
Or this one:
youtube
This is the Steam work page to start:
Follow this step for google Play
youtube
Twine game needs to be repacked as app before you can publish them.
To repack your Twine games, use these steps:
For Google, you'll need an Android repacker. You can use this one below: (This site is not free)
Here is how to use it (Skip to 3:01 minutes)
youtube
For point #1, I had no issues with size or image limit. Steam does give you different ways to upload depending on the size of your game.
For point #2, there will be hiccups and errors when you try to complete this checklist on Steam, but again, watch the videos and send some questions my way, I'll help as much as I can.
For point #3, I have no idea about the Screen Reader part. I know Twine is good for it, but personally, I don't plan on using Twine any longer, I'm moving to Renpy because it's are easier for me as of now.
Side note: Be sure to watch even more videos than those listed and don't hesitate to do additional research on Google whenever you feel stuck. Most questions and answers are already out there, so a quick search can often point you in the right direction.
If you still need help, feel free to send your questions my way!

Unity
Unity just pulled a WotC and acted like they were the only game in town - changing their payment/service structure in a way that suggests they think they've got a monopoly - and much like WotC they've been politely informed by the game development community and Reality At Large that no, actually, they are a business with competitors who are only too happy to snap up the free market share and show off their own development engines to anyone who is suddenly looking for a new one For Reasons.
Like, the announcement about Unity's pricing change hit the news blogs a day or two ago and as of today every blog I follow that does game development is like, "Let's do a quick comparison of Godot and Unreal Engine to see which would be the better dev environment for switching your game to!"

The Importance of Interest
It's been a little while since my last "on making a game" installment, and I'm in a mood to talk about interesting things... so why not Points of Interest in light of my current pet project Everwyld?
I'm in the midst of developing a world that has been truly abandoned, where players have few intelligent entities to interact with - no people, gods, robots, or holograms. This is, in a sense, the survival game of survival games: players will only have the tools they can create and knowledge they can accumulate for themselves. And if I'm being honest, I'm taking a not-insignificant amount of inspiration from Subnautica, since they made this vision an excellent reality.
(Going forward, blanket spoiler warning for locations in Subnautica. If you haven't played it and don't suffer from thalassophobia, you certainly should.)
The first challenge, and one that's doubly difficult in the analog format I'll be running this game while I develop the setting, if building player investment through their interactions with the world. Different genres and titles accomplish this in different ways.
The classic survival-crafting game Minecraft has kept players invested over its service life through the addition of new features, biomes, mechanics, the introduction of multiplayer, and a thriving, supported modding community. The multiplayer survival-crafting FPS Rust created interest for players in the world through the inclusion of other players, and the option to cooperate or resort to every-man-for-themself anarchy. Subnautica accomplishes this investment of players in the world through the inclusion of alien environments. This doesn't just mean the alien lifeforms, but the concept of the deep sea and what the various environments look like - which are often shockingly accurate excluding the giant man-eating fish - are alien to so many people who don't have the means or guts to dive through the deep ocean, and I count myself among them.
Something all of these games (and more) include to further create a player interest in the world and exploring it, though, are points of interest. None of them are unbridled wilderness. Minecraft's structures range from thriving villages, to abandoned mineshafts and shipwrecks, to the strongholds. Even the Nether and End dimensions have their own native structures. Subnautica has not only the various debris fields from the Aurora, but the Enforcement Platform, the submarine alien facilities, and the Degasi bases. In Rust, a variety of monuments dot the landscape with various traits, loot, and benefits.
Not only do these structures and points of interest enhance the world, but they change how the player will interact with it. A Subnautica player may build bases near major resource deposits or repurpose existing structures for their benefit. A Rust player may establish their base near an easy resource cache, like the farmable Underwater Rocks. In Minecraft players may use large structures as a base, or as a point of reference when navigating the functionally infinite world.
So what kind of points of interest will I be including in Everwyld? Well, as I said, the world was abandoned. It's a region largely reclaimed by nature, so much so that the artificial blemishes have all but faded. My players will start in a place truly devoid of signs of settlement, a beautiful and serene glade... (which I've taken the liberty of rendering in Unreal Engine 5 here)
Nearby are most of what they will need to survive: a source of flowing water, a game run that cuts through the forest, but what encourages them to venture from this serene space will be their curiosity as to what happened to them, and how they can hope to get home. This world is full of natural dangers, but if they brave them and survive they may find the remnants of a village where the stones jutting from the ground make odd squared angles, or a monolith that a tree has grown to encompass.
Mayhap they'll uncover something better preserved underground, or through some advanced means, that will hold answers and tools for them to delve deeper into the mystery and find their way home.
Until next time!

New information from a Kotaku article just now:
"BioWare laid off 50 employees at the end of August. Mary Kirby was one of them. Now her and six other recently laid-off developers are suing BioWare claiming it and parent company Electronic Arts are trying to welsh on their legally owed severance. In its statement of facts, which were reviewed by Kotaku, an attorney for the group claims that BioWare was only willing to offer laid-off employees two weeks of severance per year of service, rather than the one month commonly awarded under other recent labor cases. The lawsuit also claims that BioWare was unwilling to include the value of health benefits in the severance package, further shortchanging the departing developers who average 14 years of service each. EA reported over $400 million in net income in August, up 23 percent from the year prior. The company bought back $325 million in stock the same month. A lawyer for the seven laid-off employees, Alex Kennedy, told Kotaku in a phone call that BioWare has so far refused to negotiate better severance packages. Kennedy also said that some of the laid-off employees were given the impression that asking for the severance they’re owed by law could potentially become a financial burden to the studio and further jeopardize the development of Dreadwolf, a game that’s already had to be reworked and is reportedly overdue. Kennedy told Kotaku that he originally had over 15 laid-off BioWare employees who were part of the lawsuit, but many bailed, worried about their ability to pay bills and even buy presents for their kids come Christmastime. The existing severance packages, while measly, would still be money in the bank compared to the prospect of a long and drawn out legal fight. It could be a month before BioWare and EA respond to the group’s legal filing, and even longer before the case gets in front of a judge, especially if the companies deploy delay tactics. Kennedy said he’s still hopeful that BioWare will eventually “see the light” and negotiate a settlement. Interestingly, EA’s proprietary game engine Frostbite is specifically called out in the lawsuit as an important factor in determining how much severance employees are owed. Things like age, years of service, and the difficulty of finding a similar new job are all taken into account under Canadian common law. Kennedy argues that the fact that BioWare’s developers are forced to use EA’s inhouse toolset, which has long been blamed for issues with some of its biggest releases like Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem, means it could be harder for them to find a new job than developers using third-party tool sets like Unreal Engine and Unity. The job prospects for game developers are also especially grim-looking right now. A big wave of layoffs has hit the gaming industry in 2023, with companies ranging from Microsoft to Ubisoft shedding staff. Just since the BioWare layoffs in August, several new studios and companies announced cuts. Epic Games announced just last week that it will be laying off over 800 employees. The Fortnite maker has, however, promised them six months of severance and extended health benefits. EA did not respond to a request for comment."

Transcript:
"Terminated BioWare Employees Sue for Better Severance On August 23 of this year, Edmonton video game studio BioWare ULC terminated 50 employees without cause. In most recent court cases of termination without cause, Alberta Courts have awarded at least one month of severance pay per year of service, with the full value of all benefits included; the severance that BioWare offered to these employees was significantly less than this amount. Several of those ex-employees attempted to negotiate with BioWare for adequate severance, but BioWare refused to increase its severance amounts. Seven employees, with an average of 14 years at BioWare, have refused to accept BioWare's low offers, and have filed a Statement of Claim with Alberta's Court of King's Bench, requesting fair severance pay and including a request for punitive damages for what they say is unreasonably poor treatment by BioWare. "In light of the numerous recent industry layoffs and the fact that BioWare's NDAs prevent us from showing any of our recent work on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in our portfolios, we are very concerned about the difficulty many of us will have finding work as the holiday season approaches," said one of the terminated employees, "While we remain supportive of the game we worked so hard on, and of our colleagues continuing that work, we are struggling to understand why BioWare is shortchanging us in this challenging time." R. Alex Kennedy, counsel for the seven employees, says that even in cases where BioWare has contracts that discuss termination, BioWare may have included illegal provisions: "There are many situations where employers include termination provisions that are not enforced by the Courts," he said, "and I think we see that in this case too. BioWare attempted to reduce its obligation to these employees well below what the courts typically award, including by eliminating benefits from its termination pay - that appears to be contrary to the Employment Standards Code." In Kennedy's opinion, these employees deserve generous severance pay: "These people are artists and creators who have worked very hard and for a very long time in a difficult industry, producing big profits for their employer. Their termination without cause en masse like this calls for a response. Employers here can terminate anyone at any time without cause, but with that right comes a responsibility to the people they put in that situation.""

How Animation Jobs Are Changing in 2025—And Why That’s Exciting

Animation as a career has always existed in a fascinating space between art and technology. In 2025, this industry is experiencing a dynamic shift—driven by streaming platforms, gaming advancements, virtual production, and AI-powered tools—creating new avenues and opportunities for animators worldwide. If you're wondering whether animation is a good career in 2025, the answer is nuanced, but exciting. It’s not just good—it’s evolving into one of the most sought-after creative-tech professions.
The Global Demand for Animated Content
With the explosion of OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, demand for animated content has skyrocketed. In fact, Netflix recently announced a strategic move to increase its slate of animated films and series, targeting global audiences with diverse visual storytelling. This trend has created a ripple effect across studios, leading to a surge in hiring for both 2D and 3D animators.
Moreover, animation isn’t just for entertainment anymore. It's being used in advertising, healthcare visualization, education, architecture, and even corporate communication. Industries are discovering that visual storytelling helps break down complex ideas into digestible, engaging formats—and that’s where animators are finding their niche.
Technology Is Shaping the Animator's Role
Animation in 2025 is no longer restricted to traditional frame-by-frame drawing. The industry is witnessing rapid adoption of real-time rendering, AI-assisted inbetweening, procedural animation, and machine learning tools. Unreal Engine and Unity, once the realm of game developers, are now being used for animation production, especially in virtual production workflows.
AI, while often viewed with skepticism, is becoming a collaborator in the animation pipeline. Tools like Runway ML and Cascadeur help animators speed up processes such as motion capture cleanup or rough animation blocking, leaving more room for creativity and fine-tuning.
However, this doesn’t mean jobs are being replaced. In fact, the human touch is becoming more valuable. Studios are seeking professionals who can balance storytelling instincts with technological proficiency. In this context, a specialized skillset—like the one gained through a structured 3D animation course bengaluru offers—can equip aspiring artists with the right tools and perspective.
India’s Growing Influence in Animation
India has long been a powerhouse for outsourced animation and VFX work. But what’s changing in 2025 is the shift from being a service provider to a content creator. Indian studios are now producing original IPs, partnering with global platforms, and pushing the creative envelope.
Recent collaborations, such as Green Gold Animation’s partnership with international studios, signal the start of a new chapter where India becomes not just a backend contributor, but a storytelling leader. The success of shows like Mighty Little Bheem on Netflix illustrates how Indian stories can reach—and resonate with—a global audience.
Additionally, the Indian animation industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 20% through 2028, driven by demand for VFX-heavy films, metaverse development, and immersive gaming. Cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Pune remain major hubs, but another city is fast gaining momentum in this creative-tech race.
The Rising Career Landscape in Emerging Creative Hubs
There has been a notable shift toward tier-1 and tier-2 cities contributing significantly to the animation and VFX economy. Among these, one city has emerged as a key player in the animation boom, thanks to a confluence of tech infrastructure, educational institutions, and startup energy.
Studios are opening satellite offices here to tap into the growing talent pool. Local colleges and institutes are investing in advanced animation labs, mocap setups, and industry-aligned programs. As a result, job opportunities in 2D animation, 3D modeling, rigging, compositing, and VFX supervision are steadily increasing.
With global outsourcing blending into co-creation, junior animators and fresh graduates are now part of pre-production brainstorming rather than just executing post-production tasks. This exposure is accelerating career growth, especially for those with updated training in software like Blender, Maya, Houdini, and After Effects.
Freshers vs. Mid-Level Professionals: What's Changing?
In 2025, freshers no longer have to "pay their dues" through endless unpaid internships or low-budget projects. Thanks to the democratization of animation tools and content platforms, newcomers can build solid portfolios through freelance gigs, YouTube shorts, NFTs, and indie game assets. Social media has turned into a massive portfolio space—what matters now is visibility and creativity, not just degrees.
On the flip side, mid-level professionals are in high demand due to the mentorship vacuum. Studios are hunting for animators who can guide junior teams, refine complex sequences, and uphold production quality standards. Upskilling is no longer optional; professionals are enrolling in weekend workshops, advanced certifications, and short-term residencies to stay relevant.
