yk once I got over the euphoria of realising that overwatch had a singaporean character and actually took a look at her the more laughable it gets.

like, you have dr mina liao who would totally be an extremely cool playable character and has a really big lore significance, and then you immediately kill her and replace her with a fucking robot. what. (also from my limited knowledge of ow lore, this is the second time the introduce a woc scientist only to have an omnic be playable instead)

also echo is just,,, bad representation,, her singlish is the worst thing I have ever heard (it has no rhythm and is pronounced horribly) and there are like a total of. 3 cultural references found in her skins and sprays (durian, marina and that spray where she's holding a vanda miss joaquin)

I think the interaction that she has with mei is probably the best like,, character wise and culturally

it's cute and mentions our national dish as well as expanding on some character stuff for echo. that's all the good I have to say on the cultural aspects (also dr liao is so correct chicken rice is delicious)

Vanda is a Merlion who would destroy the city and its people if they were not following the commands and respect from the creature. Her labyrinth is base on the popular areas of Singapore, specifically the Marina Bay Areas.

One Week Left

Next week is my last week with WRC. It came up so quickly! Our agenda for next week is:

Have a karaoke session. Video below of the ladies trying to troubleshoot the microphone of the machine while I am providing very little assistance (but much encouragement).

Hold training presentations with the finance and program teams on the work we’ve been doing the past 3 weeks.

Farewell party for me!

Most importantly, finish my report for AfID and WRC so that we document our achievements and setup future volunteers for success.

This past week was a little bit of a struggle for me and Bunnak. We had achieved a lot of things in the previous weeks but got ambitious with what we hoped we could get out of QuickBooks. WRC is going to be able to run a lot of new reports out of QB that they have done manually in the past through Excel, such as balance sheet by donor, budget overviews by donor, and budget to actual analysis by donor. We were hoping to build in forecasting as well to better inform the management committee and donor relations on where funding gaps may exist each month. However, we decided that we were not satisfied with the functionality that QB offers and that it would be a frustrating experience to use those tools. After stepping back, we also thought that because we’ve achieved so much so far, that it could actually be too overwhelming to achieve any more goals! Meaning, we’ve got 3 new reports to learn how to interpret from QuickBooks. By adding in forecasting reports, this could overwhelm the non-finance teams and they could shut down to all of the new reports. So we will start with these achievements and maybe 6 or 12 months down the line then WRC will be in a position to add more functionality to their suite of tools. For now, forecasting will stay in manual Excel workbooks.

A small WRC staff highlight...the amazing finance and accounting duo. I’ve added here the “About Me” stories of Bunnak and Navy from the www.wrccambodia.org website. We have a blast in the #accountingnerds office at WRC. I’m sure everyone else in the building wonders why there is so much laughter coming from the accounting room.

Bunnak

My name is Bunnak Leng and I am a Cambodian woman from Siem Reap province. I am married and have three children. I studied Accounting and Finance at Build Bright University, and previously worked at the Angkor Hospital for Children. I am also a primary school teacher. My favorite thing about working at WRC is that we provide counseling support and informal education workshops on important topics like women’s health, financial literacy, positive parenting and women’s rights and gender equality. When I am not at work I always take care of my children at home, giving them good advice and teaching them good qualities and helping them with homework. My hero provided for me and taught me to be a good person with strength and kindness. Sometimes she is a good friend and sometimes she is a sister; she is my mother and she is a strong lady. In the future I want to see a safe and equal society, where opportunities are fair for women. Women will be empowered, educated, respected and able to make decision about their own lives.

Navy

My name is Navy Porng and I have been living in Siem Reap city since 2018. My hometown is Yeay Mey village in Siem Reap province. In my family, there are 7 members; my parents are farmers and I have one older brother and another younger brother. I am currently studying in Vanda Institute and majoring in accounting. I also studied at PEPY Empowering Youth Learning Center organization in English, Computers, and soft skills. When I am not at work, I like to exercise, do yoga, hang out with my friends, work on assignments, listen to music, and I sometimes volunteer in the community. Some of my favorite things about working at WRC is their goal to empower women and reinforce equal rights. My hero is my principle from high school that provided me with education, advice, and encouraged me to be a good student; I appreciate his leadership that made me the strong woman I am today. My final dream for Cambodian women is to see them have equal rights and opportunities in society. I am passionate about women’s rights because I want women and men to have equal opportunities and I also want women’s voices to be heard and respected.

I love seeing how the women at WRC lead the values and lives of their mission. Navy comes from a very small village some distance away from Siem Reap. It was her dream to come study at university. In order to leave her farming family though she first had to receive permission from her family and the village leader. After deliberation, including concerns of coming to such a larger city, her request was granted and now she lives and attends school in Siem Reap while working part time for WRC. 

What new adventure have you had outside of work this week Jessalyn? Some other recent activities I’ve been up to in Siem Reap include a motorbike tour up to Phnom Kulen National Park and Waterfall and a visit to the Phare Cambodian Circus (recommended by the ladies at WRC). 

I cannot recommend this tour enough for anyone wanting to see the beautiful Cambodian countryside. We were on small roads most of the way to Kulen Mountain which was very relaxing. A dip in the waterfall pools was welcome relief from the long ride. Note that I’m an experienced motorbike rider but these were basically scooters and the guides give you a short training in the morning before departing Siem Reap (automatic clutch!).

Yesterday (Friday night) I also went the Phare Cambodian Circus with a couple of other NGO volunteers in Siem Reap, at the recommendation of the ladies at WRC. It was hilarious and amazing! Such a great stop that most tourism website leave off a Siem Reap itinerary. https://pharecircus.org/

Pagi menjelang siang, beberapa nasi kotak masih harus diselesaikan untuk dikirim ke lokasi klienku. Lauk ayam panggang yang telah aku dinginkan dan sayur kacang panjang dan jagung segera aku masukkan ke dalam blok plastik untuk dihidangkan bersama dengan nasi di dalam kotak tersebut.

“Bi, tolong selesaikan dulu ya, mau mandi dulu nih, gak enak kalau dilihat pelanggan masih kucel.” kataku pada Bi’ Surti yang langsung dengan kecepatan tangannya menyelesaikan sajian tersebut. Handuk yang telah berada di kursi tengah langsung aku rengkuh untuk menemaniku dalam langkah ke kamar mandi.

Sweater belang abu-abu hadiah dari Mas Aul tersusun rapi di lemari bagian tengah. Sengaja kusiapkan bersamaan dengan celana jeans favoritku untuk dikenakan. 10 menit bersiap-siap, Splash kesayanganku yang telah dicuci pagi tadi, langsung diisi dengan nasi-nasi kotak yang telah diikatkan dengan rapi oleh Bi’ Surti. Bibi memang orang yang telaten dalam bekerja selama 3 tahun merawat rumah dan memasak untukku, sehingga banyak pelajaran yang telah diberikan olehnya hingga semester 6 ku kuliah di Jogja.

“Terima kasih, Bi. Selesai acara ini, komisi buat Bibi bisa buat jalan-jalan sama Lala dan Fahri.” Aku mengedipkan mata dan membuat Bibi mengangkat jari OK-OCE seakan sudah paham akan rencananya bersama cucu dan anaknya weekend minggu depan.

Cuaca Jogja yang cerah menemani waktuku untuk melajukan mobil mengejar waktu pengiriman makanan ke event temanku, Roro. Roro adalah teman dekatku semenjak SMA dan kami berasal dari sekolah yang berbeda. Kami berkenalan ketika bimbingan belajar persiapan masuk kuliah, awalnya sama-sama berniat untuk masuk ke kampus termasyhur di Bandung, namun pada akhirnya jalan Tuhan yang mengarahkan kami kuliah di kampus tertua dan terbaik Indonesia di tanah istimewa ini.

Jalanan Malioboro sangat padat pada akhir minggu, dan ini seharusnya aku sadari dari awal agar bisa mengambil jalur alternatif melalui Jalan Kusumanegara. “Biarlah, yang penting target sebelum jam 12 siang, makanan-makanan ini bisa langsung dibagikan.” batinku sambil melihat jam tangan yang menunjukkan 10 menit lagi jam menunjukkan angka 12 tepat dan mendoakan agar mobil-mobil di depan dilancarkan jalannya.

Tak sampai 7 menit, aku sudah melihat sosok Roro dan Marsha, Koor konsumsi event telah menunggu di tempat parkir Benteng Vredeburg.

“Ayo Van, langsung kita bawa kotaknya semuanya ke dalam. All crew, ayo ke parkiran ambil konsumsi.” Ujar Marsha kepadaku sambil memberi perintah ke panitia lain melalui HT. Aku sangat bersyukur bisa memegang amanah yang telah diberikan event mereka untuk mengantarkan tepat waktu. Bagaimanapun, kepercayaan dari orang sekecil apapun itu harus dirawat dan ditunjukkan dengan hasil yang memuaskan.

Setelah semua makanan didistribusikan, aku langsung berpamitan dengan Roro untuk segera pulang. “Van, buru-buru amat. Kosong kan? Mari lihat-lihat dulu karya kami, gak akan nyesel kok. Ayo ayo.” Roro mengarahkan bahuku untuk berbalik lagi ke Benteng.

Kali ini aku akui, semua karya mereka patut diacungi jempol. Maket-maket yang mereka buat adalah hasil kolaborasi masing-masing kelompok dengan keringat dan pengorbanan mereka selama 1 semester kuliah di Arsitektur yang aku yakin berat untuk aku jalani. Tidak ada hasil yang mengkhianati kerja keras, semua butuh proses dan proses yang Roro dan teman-temannya lalui pasti memiliki kenangan tersendiri di benak mereka.

Di pameran itu pun aku melihat Yani, teman sekelompok ketika ospek fakultas sambil menyapa dan mengajakku untuk melihat maketnya. Beberapa maket telah aku lewati dan aku teringat satu nama di jurusan Roro itu yang aku masih penasaran. Sosok yang pernah dia janjikan untuk dikenalkan. “Ro, inget gak? Waktu itu kamu pernah ngasih contact temanmu. Dia lagi di sini kan?” Tanyaku sambil melihat sekeliling.

“Oh yaaa, aku baru inget. Ayo ikut aku, biar aku kenalkan ke dia.” Roro langsung tanpa tendeng aling aling menggamit lenganku.

Dan benar saja.

Mataku 30 detik menangkap kehadiran satu sosok.

Sosok yang familiar, aku pastikan pernah melihatnya.

Dengan lincahnya, tangannya aku lihat memotret-motret hasil karya teman-temannya dengan iPhone-nya.

Lalu, Roro memanggilnya.

Catty.

Nama yang unik, sesuai dengan penampilan pemiliknya.

Catty menoleh tersenyum melihat kami. Aku masih terdiam mematung.

“Catty, ini aku kenalin sama temenku yang waktu itu aku janjiin mau aku kenalin. Akhirnya waktunya pas juga ya.” Roro tersipu.

“Halo, aku Catty.”

“.........., iya, hai, aku Vanda.”

 Catty tersenyum, lipstick pink nya merekah menunjukkan ketulusan senyumnya.

“Hai Vanda. Ro, aku mau lanjut ambil foto lagi ya. Hehe, selamat datang ya Van di Expo kami. Enjoy.” Ujarnya sambil berlalu.

“Oh, itu orangnya ya, Ro. Kok, lebih cantik daripada fotonya ya?”

“Hahaha, mulai. Udah, yang penting aku udah tenang, akhirnya kalian bisa kenalan langsung. Yuk, keliling lagi, masuk museumnya gratis lho.”

Senyuman Catty masih terbayang di benakku.

Pandangan mataku masih mengawasi langkah kakinya, sambil berjalan ke dalam museum.

Aku merasa masih kaku di depan wanita. Hal yang kadang membuat awkward kondisi. Tapi, pertemuan dengan Catty kala itu seperti membawa angin segar, sesegar udara di daerah kebun teh dataran tinggi Dieng.

Apakah bisa bertemu lagi dengannya?

Dan suara “Gedubrak” membuyarkan lamunanku, membuatku tersadar, kepalaku telah menabrak pintu museum Benteng Cinta.....
