a while back I wanted to see if I could make strong bad on ximboland. the answer is not really but i think he'd be flattered nonetheless

“and if you can imagine what you and heleny have but multiplied by thousands of days of joy and pain and passion, then you can see why i have to save my wife. i have to get her back.” i love how clever the writing is in severance. notice how omark doesn’t mention love at all here. the absence of “love” feels intentional. and this is him trying to convince imark to sacrifice himself, helly, and all the innies just so he can have his wife back, and he still can’t even say the word love. he wants her back for his sake, to unburden himself of the guilt he’s been carrying. that’s what’s so interesting to me. it’s not about still being in love with gemma, it’s about needing her back to absolve himself for failing her. and then there’s imark, saying: “it’s helly, actually. helly is the person i’m in love with.” he acknowledges her personhood and his feelings. while omark talks about gemma like she’s something he lost and needs to reclaim. i love how the narrative draws this contrast between them. the writing makes it clear which version is more emotionally honest.

the restaurant scene my god. that brief moment when mark shared a real laugh and a close moment with helena despite just meeting her and then recoiled in confusion and shook his head. his manner and the look in his eyes by the end of that interaction when he shoved down the inexplicable, split-second slip into easy companionship and looked at her like the destructive, dangerous stranger she is to him. the stark difference between omark and imark in that scene; down at lumon, mark was the naif, the child, the fumbling one; outside the severed floor, helena took that role. next to a regular adult she looks like the sheltered woman she is, deprived of all the usual experiences that shape a person; in so many ways, she herself is as much of an innie as helly is, but unlike helly who can evolve, helena will always be waking up on that table, over and over, no matter how much she tries to convince herself having memories makes her immune to an amorphous existence.
