Sara Boboltz at HuffPost:
The New York judge overseeing President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money trial has ordered him to appear for his long-delayed sentencing hearing on Jan. 10, more than seven months after he was convicted on all 34 felony counts against him. The unprecedented hearing will take place 10 days before Trump is to be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. He is not likely to face incarceration, however. Judge Juan Merchan wrote in his Friday order that he agreed with prosecutors that time behind bars was no longer practical, and signaled that he may choose to impose no punishment at all. Trump may also appear in court by videoconference, if he chooses, Merchan said. The judge’s decision will preserve Trump’s status as a felon — a first for any president.
His attorneys argued in the wake of his November victory that the case should be dismissed entirely. Prosecutors floated several options for his sentencing, which had already been delayed by a Supreme Court decision stating that presidents cannot be criminally prosecuted for official acts. Merchan said last month that the charges against Trump did not involve any conduct relating to his duties as president. He wrote in his Friday order that “a sentence of an unconditional discharge appears to be the most viable solution to ensure finality and allow Defendant to pursue his appellate options.” Unconditional discharge is a rare sentence that allows a defendant to walk free with no strings attached. In his 18-page order, Merchan indicated that he was trying to balance the interests of justice with the Trump team’s claim that any threat of jail time would distract from his duties as president. Once Trump takes the oath of office on Jan. 20, his right to presidential immunity kicks in, meaning that even if he received jail time, it would likely have to be completed after his second term.
Donald Trump will be sentenced in New York on January 10th, 10 days before he retakes office, to determine sentencing in the business records falsification trial. Trump is not expected to face incarceration, but could still be subjected to a fine or have his sentence dismissed via an unconditional discharge.
Still, Trump will have the dubious distinction of being the first “President” with a felony record attached to his name.

The entry fee for her campaign’s kick-off event was a box of tampons or pads to be donated to The Period Collective, a Chicago-based non-profit that distributes free menstrual products to low-income communities in the area. The debut was such a success, she said, they filled her campaign manager’s SUV with donations. (“I want him to get pulled over so bad,” Abughazaleh quipped in a video for her YouTube series How to Run for Congress.) It’s part of her pledge to disrupt politics as usual and run a campaign that promotes mutual aid and community organizing rather than a candidate-centered “vanity project” that relies on expensive TV ads and “grifty” fundraising texts. [...]Her pitch seems to have struck a chord. In the week after Abughazaleh launched her campaign, she said it had raised more than $300,000 and received more than 1,000 volunteer sign-ups. “I am sick of waiting around for someone to do something,” she said, speaking via videoconference from her apartment in Chicago, where she has a set-up for recordings and interviews. “There is no mythical, perfect candidate that’s coming out of the woodwork to save us.” After Democrats’ devastating 2024 defeat, Abughazaleh has criticized what she describes as the party’s lack of a post-Trump vision and its attachment to political norms and bipartisanship that Republicans have long abandoned. “This is [the result of] just continually not listening to voters, not considering any other solutions, even if they might be different,” she said. “There’s a lot of talk about being a big tent, but it feels like they’re only extending that tent to the right, and they’re kicking the rest of us out.”

How Corporate Law Firms Are Adapting to the Digital Age
Corporate law firms, like many other sectors, are rapidly embracing digital innovations to update their operations and better serve their clients. In this article, we will explore into how corporate law firms are adapting to the digital age, and revolutionizing the way they practice law and meet client needs.
Enhanced Communication and Collaboration: One of the most significant changes in corporate law firms is the adoption of digital tools and platforms to facilitate communication and collaboration. Virtual meeting software, secure client portals, and cloud-based document sharing have become indispensable tools for corporate law firms. Even common people have become familiar with these technologies during the pandemic. These technologies enable attorneys to connect with clients and colleagues seamlessly, regardless of geographical distances.
Data Analytics and Predictive Analytics: Data is at the core of the digital revolution, and the corporate law firms are utilizing it to their advantage. Corporate law firms are now using data analytics and predictive analytics to gain insights into legal trends, case outcomes, and client needs. By scrutinising historical data, corporate firms can make more informed decisions and provide strategic advice to clients. Predictive analytics can help identify potential legal issues before they intensify, allowing firms to offer proactive solutions.
Artificial intelligence (AI) Driven Legal Solutions: Artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming how corporate law firms handle routine tasks. Document review, contract analysis, and legal research can be time-consuming, but AI-powered tools can complete these tasks faster and with greater accuracy. This not only saves time and but also reduces costs for clients. Lawyers can focus their efforts on more complex and strategic aspects of cases, providing higher-value services.
Virtual Law Libraries and Online Resources: Traditional law libraries are being replaced by virtual law libraries and online legal resources. Lawyers can access information and research materials online, improving the efficiency of legal research. These digital resources also enable law firms to stay updated on changes in legislation and case law in real-time.
With the increasing digitization of legal processes, cybersecurity and data protection have become utmost concerns for corporate law firms. These firms must safeguard sensitive client information and comply with data privacy regulations.
Online Court Hearings and Digital Services: Corporate law firms are increasingly focused on providing a unified digital experience for their clients. This includes online scheduling, electronic signatures, and easy access to legal documents through client portals. This improves client satisfaction and makes it more convenient for clients to interact with their legal counsel.
Online court hearings eliminate the need for physical presence, saving valuable time for lawyers and clients who no longer have to commute to courtrooms. This efficiency not only benefits legal professionals but also contributes to more prompt and cost-effective legal proceedings for clients.
Litigants can easily find information about their videoconference hearings through the Dubai Courts and Abu Dhabi website and attend remotely, ensuring broader access to justice. This digital accessibility reduces barriers for individuals who may have previously faced challenges attending in-person hearings due to distance or other limitations.
The ability for judges to conduct live hearings through online platforms ensures real-time proceedings.
Online Notarization of Power of Attorney (POA): Corporate law firms are also benefit from the online notarization of Power of Attorney documents, particularly when the principal cannot travel. Through the mobile application, notary public of the Dubai Courts can remotely verify the identity of the principal and ensure their consent for the POA. Online notarization eliminates the need for in-person meetings, simplifying the notarization process and making it more accessible for clients. Clients no longer need to physically visit notary offices, which can be particularly beneficial for some clients. Upon successful e-notarization, clients receive their electronic Power of Attorney (e-POA) via email.
In conclusion, corporate law firms in the UAE are at the forefront of adapting to the digital age, leveraging online court hearings and the electronic notarization of documents to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and safety.

Wei Ho Is Drawn to Algebra, Geometry and the Human Side of Math | Quanta Magazine
https://www.quantamagazine.org/wei-ho-is-drawn-to-algebra-geometry-and-the-human-side-of-math-20221122/
Wei Ho, the first director of the Women and Mathematics program at the Institute for Advanced Study, combines algebra and geometry in her work on an ancient class of curves.
---
Introduction
Like many people who would go on to become mathematicians, Wei Ho grew up competing in math contests. In eighth grade, she won the Mathcounts state competition in Wisconsin, and her team took third place at nationals.
Unlike many future mathematicians, she wasn’t sure she ever wanted to become one.
“I wanted to do everything, all the time,” Ho said. “I took ballet very seriously until early high school. I edited the literary magazine. I did debate and forensics. I played tennis and soccer and piano and violin.” By contrast, many successful mathematicians appeared to be obsessed with math to the exclusion of everything else. How could she, a person with numerous passions, compete with that level of focus?
Ultimately, Ho was drawn to the rigor of mathematics. She still enjoys ballet, reading novels and doing cryptic crossword puzzles, even as she helps to reinvent the mathematical machinery that underpins fundamental mathematical objects, such as polynomial equations, which have long-standing and perplexing open questions associated with them.
Ho studies familiar geometric objects, but she reformulates the questions to situate them in the realm of the rational numbers — numbers that can be written as fractions. “Then number theory starts to get mixed into all of this,” she said.
She is especially interested in elliptic curves, which are defined by a particular kind of polynomial equation that has applications in different branches of mathematics. Elliptic curves appear in analysis — broadly speaking, the study of continuous things, like the real numbers — and in algebra, which is about finding and defining precise mathematical structures. (Though their focus is different, analysis and algebra are divided more by sensibility than by a strict boundary, as there is plenty of overlap between them.)
Introduction
In a barrier-breaking preprint released in 2018, Ho and her collaborator Levent Alpöge of Harvard University discovered a new upper bound for the number of integer solutions to polynomials that define elliptic curves. Their technique draws upon the decades-old work of Louis Mordell, an American mathematician who emigrated to Britain in 1906. In their paper, Ho and Alpöge were able to glean new information about the distribution of these integer solutions that had evaded other teams studying similar problems.
Ho is spending the year (on leave from her faculty position at the University of Michigan) as a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, where she was recently named the first director of the IAS’s Women and Mathematics program. She is also a 2023 fellow of the American Mathematical Society and a research scholar at Princeton University.
She’s hopeful that directing the Women and Mathematics program will “at least help the community more, help more people, instead of just me being in my office doing math research by myself or with collaborators,” she said. “I can prove theorems, and maybe someday I can prove a theorem that in 100 years will matter. Maybe, maybe not. But I felt like I wasn’t making enough impact on the world or on people around me.”
Quanta spoke with Ho in a series of videoconferences. The interviews have been condensed and edited for clarity.
How would you describe the way you do mathematics?
Sometimes mathematicians divide ourselves into algebraic and analytic people. The math I do touches both sides, but at heart, I am an algebraist, though I’m geometric in the way I think. I often tend to view algebra and geometry as essentially the same.
That’s not quite accurate, but basically since the work of Descartes and especially in the last century, the two subjects have become really close. There is a rather precise dictionary that can, in some situations, help translate a geometric picture to algebraic consequences.
In my own case, the geometric picture often helps formulate statements and conjectures and give intuition, but then we translate them to algebra when writing. It’s easier to detect mistakes as algebra is typically more rigorous. It can also be easier to use algebra when geometry gets too hard to visualize.

The article is really interesting, but for those just looking for the “solutions” part I’ll save you some time: the solution to most causes of videoconference fatigue is to turn the goddamn camera off.
I don’t agree with absolutely everything in the article -- for one, I have never worked anywhere that randomly standing up and pacing around was considered appropriate meeting manners -- but I think overall it’s a good quantification of the issues with video meetings in general, and a great resource if you’re trying to pitch less video and more audio to your boss.
We don’t do many at my office. Because we had a one-day-a-week-remote policy even before the pandemic, we were well set up to move smoothly towards all meetings going virtual, and we’re accustomed to having people on audio. Which is good, because I find video calls physically painful -- not only do I have to maintain a specific posture, regardless of what that posture is, but I find myself feeling required to smile constantly, so I don’t look like an asshole every time I look at myself. Video meetings tend to run longer, which means I’m having to keep my earbuds in, and smiling with earbuds in hurts. I have a feeling my next big purchase will be some fancy “can” headphones like Beats or something. (Recommendations for an over-the-ear padded headphone with integrated mic, preferably bluetooth, welcome.) I normally love our quarterly get-togethers where HR feeds us snacks and encourages us to just hang out and talk, but I dread them now because it’s two solid hours of having to smile with earbuds in.
Anyway, tl;dr, make your video call window super tiny, try not to look at yourself, and turn off the camera as much and as often as you can. (Students in class, I guess you’re SOL, but since when is that anything new.)

Big Data Driven Decisions in Finance Solutions
One expanded mechanical merchandise producer took in this exercise the most difficult way possible. The group fostered an exquisite and convincing vision for the future excursion that was intensely b2b credit advanced based and included moment request affirmations, a single tick reordering, track-and-follow ability for in-progress requests, and straightforwardness about the ramifications of request changes.
However when the group introduced the methodology, the mind-set at the show was sullen. At the point when the program lead asked what wasn't right, the future item proprietor shared her interests that their work could set enormous assumptions that could be difficult to accomplish on the grounds that an excessive number of things outside their nearby control should have been changed. In the conversation that followed, the group surfaced a not insignificant rundown of required changes,
including data innovation (IT) frameworks, authoritative designs, preparing necessities, and outlooks. Maybe than treating these as one major barrier, the group chose to enlist a C-suite-level program proprietor and furthermore make one individual answerable for each change, uga elc accordingly making an interpretation of them into an arrangement of drives that laid the preparation for changing their association's center.
How much organizations ought to put resources into digitization of individual excursions shifts altogether, yet some broad examples arise. Organizations with normalized items and a divided client base will need to put all the more vigorously in the client excursions of distinguishing required items and administrations, making introductory buys, and reordering to profit with efficiencies. Conversely, organizations offering more modified items to a more modest arrangement of clients regularly put a higher need on the excursions of codeveloping or tweaking with providers and managing unforeseen occasions.
One substance organization updated and digitized its requesting venture with various thoughts for advanced self-administration, just to track down that key clients were wary about not having an individual relationship administrator to call when things turned out badly. The group returned to the planning phase and changed the experience plan. Generally significant, they reestablished the part of the relationship chief, giving clients a decision between utilizing oneself help stage and calling the administrator. They organized it so the client and supervisor would utilize similar entry to collaborate. What's more, they added a cobrowsing and work area videoconference highlight so correspondence about any issues would be fast and individual.
This model delineates how the best rethought travels deliberately switch between advanced self-administration, carefully empowered human cooperations, and improved disconnected associations to coordinate with client inclinations and guarantee the level of normalization and exchange volume that warrants interests in digitization. B2B clients are for the most part glad to utilize computerized self-administration for basic, routine communications like reordering to save time or be more adaptable. However, when the association is new and unpredictable or a lot is on the line, most still incline toward a genuine individual (who likewise may be carefully empowered).

Socializing with spreadsheets
Socializing via videoconference can be exhausting (especially if you're spending your working days ALSO in videoconferences): the panopticon nature of not knowing whether someone is looking at you can make it hard to relax.
Here's Marie Foulston's solution: a party in a spreadsheet.
https://onezero.medium.com/party-in-a-shared-google-doc-d576c565706e
Foulston's spreadsheet opens with a picture of a door pasted into a cell; it has a "coat-room" tab and then, as guests arrive and start adding tabs, it sprouts a "hallway" and a "kitchen."
People come with animal avatars, and "A flurry of coloured cursors dart from cell to cell announcing names, and guests attempt to decipher their anonymous animal alter egos."
People cut-and-paste coat images into the coatroom tab. A guest paints all the cells in one tab blue, and it becomes the "blue room." Party snacks are pasted into cells. There's an animated dance-floor (GIFs? Scripts? she doesn't say).
Bonfires appear in the garden tab, and above them, s'mores. Someone pastes a police-car into the "front drive" tab and everyone gets briefly quiet until the cops leave.
The tabs each have their own lingering conversations to pop into and scroll back through.
At the end of the night, the action moves to "paint by numbers" tabs where tired stragglers' cursors move between cells, coloring them in to make crude images.
Finally, to end the festivities, Foulston creates a sunrise tab and colors it from dark blue to warm orange.
Foulston's delightful description reminds me of the glory days of MUDs and MOOs and MUSHes, a collaborative, playful form of mostly textual storytelling and pretend.

4 Types of Credit
The types of credit Not all types of credit are created equal, they have different uses, different interest rates or loan constants, have varying benefits, and may not really be serving your higher purpose.
There are 4 categories of credit that you need to be aware of and know how to use and manage. There has been a lot of miseducation, and worse, no education in credit – its building, use, maintenance, or leverage potential. This void has left millions of Americans with zero foundation on how to create credit, even more so, left each one at a severe disadvantage for creating generational wealth.
I’m Lauren Dulgheru, aka the Solutionist of Total Solution Trust. I help people to rebuild and remaster their credit, so they can make the needed big-ticket purchases to grow.
What is credit? Definition of credit has two aspects:
• OPM! You are using other people’s $$ (or bank or whatever) to fund your purchases now, and you agree to pay the amount used plus any charges, any additional fees incurred and abide by time restrictions.
• A description of your borrowing reputation that presents your payment history and to what degree you may a be a lending risk.
Using Credit In American society, we have been bred to use credit to purchase consumable goods or big-ticket purchases, such as a home, car, student or personal loans. This is a direct indication that we are transitioning toward a cashless society.
Our educational system in the United States does not include study of credit, it’s uses, how to manage, or how to create income from it. We seek to fill this void, we want you to overstand how to rebuild, replenish and restore your credit. Learning to use credit intelligently is important to avoid the primary common pitfall – overuse of your credit limit and buying liabilities.
Four Forms of Credit:
1. Revolving This is the most common form issued by credit cards, store cards and gas cards. It is unsecured because there is no collateralization involved to secure the borrowed amount. The borrower revolves on the balance and pays interest on any balance remaining month to month. The difference between the maximum limit and the current balance is available to the borrower.
2. Charge Cards There is often confusion between revolving credit cards and charge cards. Credit cards can carry a balance month to month. Charge cards must be paid in full each month. If the monthly balance is not paid, the borrower is levied a penalty fee. This type is an effective deterrent against accumulating credit card debt.
3. Installment Credit is structured such that there is a set amount borrowed, set monthly payments and a specific timeframe for repayment. Interest charges are calculated into each monthly payment. Typical installment credit agreements are home mortgages and car loans. This type of credit is secured because the borrower must provide collateral for the loan. If he fails to repay or defaults on the loan, the lender can confiscate the collateral (i.e., the home) or repossess the auto.
4. Lines of Credit- they are reusable! Saves you time in applications, inquiries, and shopping. 5. Non-installment or Service Credit The borrower pays for a service or membership, etc. to occur at a later date. Cell phone, gas, electricity, water and waste management are examples of this kind of service credit. Failure to pay on time usually draws penalty charges and negative reporting to credit bureaus.
You will want to stay tuned into more information about rebuilding your credit masterfully and uncovering how to turn credit into income! If you know anyone who can benefit from great credit and options, be sure to SHARE!
