oh right. i started voice lessons again last week! i like my teacher so far. she said she's 99% sure i'm a metzo soprano. she also said my voice has "power," which apparently is connected to me having a hard time hitting the middle notes. i'm scared but curious about my second lesson today. hopefully it goes okay.

As a singer, one of the greatest gift of training is to just be able to sing whenever. No detailed warmup no technique exercises, just being able to use your instrument straight up. Of course not full out singing with no warning, but you know what I mean. It is so rewarding to just sing, no mental math, no nothing.

Domenico: "I must have spent too much time in the Italian Riviera."
Tumblr media
Domenico: "It never felt this cold in Piedmont."
Tumblr media
"My friends, I would like to find out what it is that you are preparing for audition and we shall see what it is that we can do in order to make your audition a successful one. D'accordo?"
River: "I have absolutely no idea, but I have a few songs that I selected from a music store."
Domenico: "Fantastico...we shall prepare then. So who first is the student?"
River: "He goes first..."
Haruo: "Wait...what?"
Tumblr media
"Now...we shall start with warming up the voice... You will perform the scales..."
Tumblr media
"Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah..." "now...La..." "Author's Note: how can you tell I've done this before..." 🙄
My first recital piece was this happy little "fast number" by Handel.
youtube
I was a baritone like Bryn Terfel here. Haruo is a tenor...and I was always jealous of tenors because they got the "good stuff" other than "The Trumpet Shall Sound" which was the pièce de résistance of bass/baritone pieces in the oratorio/opera repertoire
Tumblr media
Domenico: Now...you shall try some of your first piece. I shall show you how...to project your voice... like this...
Tumblr media
...Tune...Tune your harps to cheerful strains...moulder idols, i-into-oo-oo-oo dust...moulder idols into dust..."
Tumblr media
Haruo: "Great Jehovah lives and reigns...li-ives and reigns...We in great Jeho-vah trust. We in grea-ea-ea-ea-ea-ea-eat Jehovah trust..."
Tumblr media
"Tune...Tu-une yo-our harps to che-er-ful strains...Mo-oulder Idols...i-in-nto-oo-oo dust...Mo-oulder I-i-dols in-to-oo dust.
Tumblr media
Tune your harps...to che-ee-erful strains...Tune your harps to cheerful strai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ains...mo-oulder i-i-idols into dust, moulder i-i-dols...mo-oulder i-i-i-i-i-dols i-i-i-in-to dust. mo-oulder -i-i-idols i-into dust..."

What I thought taking voice lessons would be like: very strict, singing classical music, doing exercises.
What it really is: sitting in a tiny ass room singing the Killers at the top of my lungs.

Voice teacher recommended, among other things, putting a lot of weight into the last sound of a word/sentence. A mic drop, as it were. Feels good. Right. Nontoxic masculinity.

Did you know that "inspiration" literally means "to breathe in"? Just as life begins with breath, so does voice. Every sound we make starts with the simple, sacred act of taking a breath. My journey with Appoggio began when Metropolitan Opera conductor Steven Crawford asked me about "Appoggio"—a question I couldn't answer at the time. That moment of curiosity sparked years of research and discovery that shaped my entire approach to vocal technique. In my latest post, I explore how this profound connection reveals why breath training for singers goes far beyond technique—it's about creation, intention, connection, and expression. #SingingTechnique #BreathWork #VocalTraining #Inspiration #VoiceCoaching #SingingTips
