The drama documentary that I directed and wrote of the legendary, celebrated and eventually troubled war hero Aarne Juutilainen should soon see the light of the day. This project that started as student work for Voionmaa Institute has been in the works since 2018 and went through several phases of transformation, conceptual reassessment and also extensive re-cuts before we could say we have the final product in our hands.

This is the project I’m currently working on. Premiere 18 July 2023 at Ykspihlaja Festival, Kokkola, Finland. VOD later on (details TBC).
Info:
Captain Aarne Juutilainen (1904-1976), nicknamed "the Terror of Morocco" after his stint in the French Foreign Legion, became the symbol of the Battle of Kollaa in Finnish Winter War of 1939-40. The sniper Simo Häyhä, “the White Death”, was one of Juutilainen’s men. A forthcoming documentary will be an account of Aarne Juutilainen life.
Tuotanto / Produced by:
Pauli Poranen Production (Kokkola), The Kiljava Institute/Voionmaa Institute (Tampere), The Federation of Education in Central Ostrobothnia & Media Centre LIME (Kokkola) & pHinnWeb/Pispala Noir (Tampere).

I wrote and directed "Myrsky" ('The Storm'), a commercial spot for the Voionmaa Institute, made as a student project for the Film and TV Department.
The filming itself took place in a frosty forest somewhere near the border of Kangasala and Valkeakoski in January 2018. Starring six actor students of Voionmaa as "The Journalist", "The Cinematographer", "The Photographer", "The Teacher", "The Psychologist", and "The Actor", representing different departments of the Institute, the commercial was conceived as a spoof of black and white silent era comedy.
The filming was marred by some problems, such as the snow machine freezing(!) in the below-zero temperature, but at least our actors seemed to have a good time.
The location for the concluding part was the lobby of Voionmaa Institute at the Pinni B building of Tampere University Campus. The commercial was launched by the Voionmaa Institute in March 2018. The screenshot above is from the draft version.
