Going into 'A league of Nobleman' all I knew it was going to have some censored bl vibes or whatever between the two leads but no one prepares you for that besides Zhang Ping, Lan Jue has Mowen, a hot army commander and an ex he shacked up with on an abandoned little isle who turns out to be a mad Prince and other things like???
I mean if I saw Lan Jue as well in his in-house robes with hair open looking soft and having tea I think I too would devote myself my life in service to him

Whumptober Day 28: Sacrifice
Peizhi looks awful. Truly awful. And Gu Qingzhang… he has a job to do. He can’t sacrifice everything he’s worked towards just for this.
Except…
He had approached Lan Jue because of who his father was. He had befriended Lan Jue as a means to an end. He had meant to stay with Lan Jue in order use him.
He had stayed with Peizhi because he was utterly entranced by him.
He can see himself in him. They’re of a similar age. They’re both orphans (or, in Gu Qingzhang’s case, as good as). They’re both determined to go through anything to get justice for their families.
Peizhi doesn’t know this about Shulin, of course, but he must have seen something, because for all Gu Qingzhang had tried to chase him, Peizhi had not tried hard to escape. Had pushed closer himself.
And all this, now, has led to Gu Qingzhang’s heart beating faster as he watches Peizhi pour poison into his own wine.
Gu Qingzhang has too much at stake to risk anything. He has to avenge the people who raised him. He has to have revenge on the Empress who left him to die.
And yet... and yet.
He swaps the wine with a deft hand. Tips it back without giving anything away. Slips away into the dark, feeling his insides burning but knowing, at least, that Peizhi will be alright.
Some sacrifices are worth it.
Peizhi looks awful. Truly awful. And Wang Yan… he has a job to do. He can’t sacrifice his good name, his family’s reputation just for this.
Except…
When he had met Lan Jue, he had been a nobody, selling calligraphy in the street, his own family’s reputation nothing but dust. Wang Yan hadn’t even noticed him, until he had been given no choice not to.
He can’t imagine his life without Peizhi in it, now.
He can see himself in him. They’re of a similar age. They both want their father’s to be able to look at them proudly. They’re both desperate to prove themselves in the political sphere.
Peizhi knows about the struggle Mowen has had, getting his father to approve of him. They had held each other close, one of them wishing his father cared, the other wishing his father was there. It made Wang Yan feel selfish, thinking about it afterwards, but somehow it had only drawn Peizhi closer.
And all this, now, has led to Wang Yan pausing to think as Peizhi begs him to hide evidence that he says is being used to frame him.
Wang Yan has too much at stake to risk anything. He has to prove his worth as the Minister for Justice to the Emperor. He has to prove it to his father.
And yet... and yet.
He nods, briskly. He swaps the evidence with a deft hand. Hides it without giving anything away. Slips back to the investigation, ignoring the potential political ramifications because he knows, at least, that Peizhi will be alright.
Some sacrifices are worth it.

Lan Jue x Wang Yan (Mowen) - Best ship name ever
Ok, definitely quite random, but I just wanted to take a moment to applaud the Chinese ship name for Lan Jue x Wang Yan from A League of Nobleman. I’m actually unsure if there’s been a good ship name for these two in English (nothing seemed to pop out at me?), but the Chinese fandom seems to have settled on 兰砚知己, which is perfect because:
兰 = ‘Lan’ in Lan Jue
砚 = ‘Yan’ in Wang Yan
知己 = ‘Zhiji’, which is confidante / soulmate (not necessarily in the romantic sense, but bromance / BL has opted to make it a Thing, and I’ve decided to roll with it)
And, there’s a similar sounding Chinese phrase ‘蓝颜知己‘  (in fact, only the second word has a different intonation from the ship name) which specifically refers to the male confidante of a woman (the ‘lan yan’ here means ‘blue’, or more specifically, ‘blue color’).
And to add more fun, a common follow up / associated joke or saying is that ‘blue blue often turns green’, where the color green (and more specifically, wearing a green hat), means you’ve been cuckolded. That is to imply, of course, that any close male friend of a woman will likely always become a romantic interest. (Personally, I think that’s BS, but anyway that’s the saying / joke.)
So then coming back to this ship name, it was just *chef’s kiss*. Like, other ship names are often sayings or phrases as well, but not quite so well mapped multi-dimensionally.
P.S: I’ve opted to not tag this post with that tag, since I assume folks using that tag would already be aware of this and not impressed by my realization 🤣
Bonus: If you want to search for Lan Jue x Wang Yan content... searching this tag on bilibili gives you all the fun fanvids.

Come and vote for the best characters with the same surname!*
What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
*note, the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often there will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
Propaganda is very welcome! If I’ve forgot anyone, let me know in the notes.

A League of a Nobleman...bruh I was waiting for this drama to come out in 2021 and I’m so glad it’s finally here.
I have never read the original work it was based on, so I was kind of going into it blind, but I really enjoyed this drama.  It’s so up my fucking alley it’s ridiculous.
I loved all the characters.  Zhang Ping, Lan Jue, Chen Chou, Xu Dong, Wang Yan, the fucking Emperor...I loved them all.  I love their relationships and how they grew close to each other, I loved learning about their backstories (especially Lan Jue and Zhang Ping) and how they were intertwined...just loved it.
I loved the cases too.  They were super interesting and like, some things I could figure out what they were putting down, but other things I just stared at my screen in shock like bitch.  The whole overarching case?  Absolutely fucking shook.  And I love me a good overarching case
I also loved loved loved (and this is me as a forensic science person talking) that whenever they were either investigating a body or touching evidence, they were wearing fucking gloves and masks.  Like thank you fucking jesus.  If fucking historical dramas can wear gloves and masks, there’s no excuse for modern dramas to not do the same, you feel?
As for the villains...hated hated hated the Empress Dowager.  I ain’t sad she’s dead.  She deserved it.  Like, you fucked around for too damn long and now you’re suffering the consequences.  Reap what you sow, bitch.  Reap what you sow.  And as for Shulin...I just feel sorry for him.  I really do.  I don’t condone what he did, but I do feel bad that this happened to him.  And his death was peaceful...which considering his entire life, was probably a good thing.  He just fixed his clothes, straightened his hair, and walked straight into the mist to never be seen again.  A fitting death, I suppose.
I do like the ending.  I liked that Mowen came and took charge of the Court of Judicial Rites (as he fucking should) and I thought it was super cute that Xu Dong and Lan Jue went to Yiping County to see Zhang Ping and that the drama ended like how it started: with a bowl of noodles.
Also the OST.  Fucking slaps man.
Overall, 10/10, would definitely recommend

Etienne Telling's 2023 Fic Roundup
All fics on AO3 are well tagged or have end notes with more details. Fics below contain everything from soft kink to noncon, so mind the tags and endnotes before reading.
114,307 words this year! Mostly CQL/MDZS, one original, and one A League of Nobleman.
In order of publication:
Brat, NieYao, Rated E, 3.4K.
Meng Yao comes home and ends up with an unexpected reward.
This Heavy Joy, Jadecest, Rated E, 22.6K
Xichen is determined not to allow Wangji to wither in isolation in the aftermath of his punishment. Xichen’s care draws the Twin Jades closer than ever and reveals old wounds alongside the new. As they struggle in recovery, Lan Yuan teaches them how to play pretend, and the Twin Jades redefine what it is to be a family.
Intricate, Wen Ning/Lan Xichen, Wangxian, Wangningxian, other implied ships, Rated E, 2.5K
Wen Ning walks in on Lan Huan dick out on his sofa, listening to Lan Zhan and Wei Ying fucking in the other room and takes charge of the situation.
Good Girls Don't, Xiyao/Jin Ling, Rated E, 5.3K
Jin Ling has a rape fantasy. Jin Guangyao doesn't trust just anyone to take care of her.
Grateful, A League of Nobleman, Lan Jue/Wang Yan, Rated E, 1.1K
"I wasn't even gone a week." How many more times will this scene play out between them? This is at least the third, and Mowen knows it won't be the last. He can only hope they'll keep happening, with Peizhi managing to escape from a mess of his own making by the skin of his teeth.
First, Jadecest, Rated E, 2.9K ⚠️Rape/Noncon, Underage
A teenage prank goes wrong and Lan Xichen finds himself the age he was when he lost his virginity.
Ask, Jadecest, Rated E, 5.8K
In which Wangji and Xichen play a cat and mouse game over Xichen's spanking kink.
drag it from the inside (like we're young again), Jadecest and Wangxian, Rated E, 6.6K
In which Wangji decides how to help his brother, with a little help from Wei Ying. A slice of Wangji POV from if you tell them where to begin. Not a standalone.
10/07/07 2:13 PM with @iamwestiec, Xizhui, Rated E, 24.2K
Introduced to a kink on ff.net, a teenage Lan Yuan stumbles into an ageplay forum in an attempt to learn more. With a new name (sizhui1987), false birth year, different gender, and insatiable curiosity, Sizhui makes friends with the forum's owner, shuoyue_writer. Drawn together by shared identities and caregiving preferences, Shuoyue changes Sizhui's life. Except… Shuoyue is Sizhui's Uncle Xichen, and eventually, the truth of who Sizhui is comes out and crashes down on the both of them. TL:DR: Sizhui Catfishes his Uncle Xichen, circa 2006-2008. A story told in AIM transcripts, emails, and vignettes
Home, Xiyao, Rated E, 4.9K
Xichen comes home to Meng Yao; he comes home to his mama.
Seventeen Minutes, Jin Gaungyao/Lan Sizhui (kinda), Rated E, 1.5K
The way of the Cloud Recesses is that a dominant must intimately understand what they are doing to their submissive. To understand, they must experience. It would be foolish not to accept a masterclass from Lianfang-zun, even if it means Sizhui's limits will be putty in Lianfang-zun's hands
Well Bred, 3zun/Qin Su, Rated E, 1.9K
The one where Qin Su gets fucked by her husband's beloved pony. And his boyfriend.
love is the voice under all silences, Xiyao, Rated E, 5.2K
The one where Jin Gaungyao allows Lan Xichen to whisk him away to happiness.
Recognition, Xiayo, Rated E, 17.2k ⚠️Rape (Xichen/Others)
Meng Yao rescues the first Jade of Lan and takes him into his home, becoming far more involved than ever anticipated.
strength and softness, Yu Ziyuan/Jiang Yanli, Rated E, 2.5K
Yanli has always been weak, but the truth of her weakness is a carefully guarded secret. It is not an easy life, yet with all of Yanli's secrets, she has one she treasures: there is a side of her mother that she is the only one in the world allowed to see. Or, the one where Yanli has a curse where she needs physical contact to live.
The Lemon House, Original, Nonbinary/Genderqueer, Rated E, 5.7K
A Day in the Life of a House Submissive for a Housing Cooperative in a BDSM AU setting. Wren’s second favorite thing about mornings is the satisfaction of giving its housemates a warm start to the morning. That their day will be a little nicer because of Wren. No matter how shitty its housemates’ days may be, Wren started them right. It will wait for them when they get home, bookmarking their days with warmth and affection.

Snippet!
My lurgy is better, and I have been writing the next chapter of 'Detoxify'.
Shulin's PoV
When they got to the coffee shop, the atmosphere inside was fraught; Shulin just needed to open the door the first little crack to sense the fizzing, discontent, crackling qi inside.
He closed the door again.
“You have your badge and handcuffs with you, do you?” he asked Mowen.
“Badge yes, handcuffs, no,” Mowen said. “We’ll have to ask Fang Duobing or Di Feisheng for zip ties. Who am I arresting, by the way?”
“Xue Yang,” Shulin said; nobody else in their extended circles exuded that kind of energy, after all. “Or maybe some previously unknown miscreant about to cause a major stink by harassing somebody they think they have a right to. But my money is on Xue Yang. Do you have Wang Zhi on speed dial?”
Mowen took out his phone. “I do now,” he said. “And I’m sending you the 3D model of the room, in case you need to talk to Di Feisheng by yourself. Let’s go.”
He took the door handle from Shulin, yanked open the door, and strode inside with his signature self-confidence.
Shulin followed more slowly, reading the energy of the room. Yep, there was Mo Xuanyu, a bit red around the eartips, and the person opposite him in his booth was most likely Xue Yang, gesturing at him. Fang Duobing was behind the counter, working his big machine and looking over to the booth in question every few seconds; Di Feisheng was leaning on the counter from the customer side, in a scruffy black v-necked sweater that beautifully showed off the depth of his tanned cleavage; every other few seconds, Fang Duobing was looking at him.
That mixture of worried and horny accounted for quite some percentage of the fizzy qi inside the coffee shop.

(Mowen x Lan Jue x Zhang Ping) Mowen: I'm bored, let's go do something. Zhang Ping: Did Lan-daren do something to piss you off again?
This one became a little more Mowen x Zhang Ping than anything hahah I can't find it within myself to regret it tho. Hope you like this!
~*~*~*~
He leaves him be until the second bowl of watery dough knocks against his elbow. An intervention is needed, Zhang Ping decides, taking a deep breath to brush off the flour on his hands.
"Are you going to compensate me for the ingredients you're wasting?"
Mowen startles mid-crack of an egg, eyes blinking owlishly at him. Pursing his lips, he frowns, nose scrunched in a way that Zhang Ping will forever deny sets off a flurry of butterflies in his belly.
"I'm bored," Mowen declares almost imperiously a beat later. There's a thread of anticipation in his voice when he follows it up with a lilting, "Let's go do something."
Bravely resisting the urge to roll his eyes, and barely just succeeding, Zhang Ping carefully takes the bowl from Mowen, setting it aside and gently taking a cloth to wipe down his hands.
"Did Lan-daren do something to piss you off again?" He asks, fingertips caressing the back of Mowen's hands. Smiling gently under the gaze he receives, he trails his thumb over a pulse point. "Don't deny it. You're terrible at hiding your true emotions when it comes to him."
Mowen harumphs, but doesn't move away. If anything, he shuffles closer, knocking their knees together. "It's not just him, you know?"
"If you mean to say that I may be jealous because you think you are both closer together than you are with me, please don't be," Zhang Ping chuckles, letting a little bit of his weight be supported by Mowen. "You both had a life together even before I entered the picture. It's only natural you are much familiar with his moods and fancies. I'm content to play catch-up with you."
"Be that as it may," Mowen starts, twisting his hand in Zhang Ping's to hold on to a slender wrist. "We never want to make you feel left out when it comes to us. Because you're part of us now, even if sometimes you may not feel like it."
Zhang Ping smiles, lifting his eyes. "You're side-stepping the question here, Wang-daren. Did Lan-daren do something to piss you off again?"
Mowen sighs, pulling him in until their hips are knocking against the corner of the kitchen table. "Sometimes I hate that your mind spins in a hundred ways that I can't follow sometimes."
"And so?"
Mowen smiles, darting in to slide their lips together and nipping gently. "Yeah. He said something stupid at court today and I just..."
"Am annoyed?"
"Mn."
"Frustrated."
"Mmhm
"Perhaps a little...?"
"Don't be cheeky, it doesn't suit you," Mowen tuts, affecting a mock affronted glare. There's no heat in his words, nothing but a fondness that cuts Zhang Ping deep in his chest. He's lucky, he knows that. Lucky to be loved by this man and the man he's a little annoyed at.
"Shall we go do something fun to surprise him when he comes home?"
Mowen cocks an eyebrow, his smile dipping into a slow grin with his teeth showing conspiratorially. "What do you have in mind?"
Zhang Ping laughs. "I have a few things I can show you. Have you ever read the Kama Sutra?"
[Am currently still accepting ALoN prompts]
