Sanctuary: Future Tense
Past tense to future tense let history unfold So ends a decade now what will the nineties hold You know we're verging on the edge of an age Then another century will turn the page

Wednesday, January 17: Sanctuary, "Soldiers of Steel"
R.I.P. Warrel Dane (1961-2017)
The demo for “Soldiers of Steel”, released some 30 years later on the Inception compilation, illustrated how and why Sanctuary stood apart from the rest of the Seattle scene and were briefly a hot commodity among major label A&R reps.  There was technicality and malevolence in equal measure, with Lenny Rutledge’s riffing showing full clarity of intent while fusing the strains of US power metal with more conventional metal sounds, and in Warrel Dane they had a vocalist who sounded of the times but brought an intensity that was entirely his own.  He also sounded completely insane, which was both exhilarating and terrifying.  “Soldiers of Steel” suggested cliché with its title, and the tune wasn’t entirely devoid of that, but it carried a foreboding tension that was anathema to mid ‘80s metal and felt like a harbinger of what was to come, which in many ways was exactly what it ultimately was.

Feel our mother nurture, for we are the children Suckling at her breast, she gives us life She gives us all we need What do we give in return for life we take from her? Oh, forgive us, Mother, forgive us For we know what we do We've blistered and burned you Our kind may soon be through, we've raped you

I never got into Nevermore, but these songs are absolute bangers. Believe in Nothing was one of those random songs/videos I saw before I got into extreme metal, and it stuck in my mind.

dead heart in a dead world
To see the last survivor fall To see their bastard sons against the wall To see the emptiness as we decay I see the world is dead; I am betrayed.
This rotten hole that I call home Bled dry again This lesion marked upon my soul Left an empty, hanging man

this is your local fanfic writer in her natural morning habitat:
Wrapped in a blanket, listening to the new Sulphur Aeon, and writing silly modern AUs nobody asked for while trying to figure out how much additional smut she should write today before she has to go be an adult and clean and make her living space somewhat presentable. Disgusting.
Notes on my current projects under the break...
Chapter [spoiler] of the AU is ~6k but not necessarily finished. I may go back to add more smut, or add more build up, or add more aftermath. I like the ending it currently has, but we'll see.
Chapter [spoiler+1] of the AU is still way, way early in the drafting stage, but the fic as a whole is edging towards "comfortable to start posting" in terms of buffer chapters! This is so that I can write the AU while ALSO writing one-shots whenever I feel like it. I have an important thematic thread to weave in here, so this one will likely take a bit longer to get through.
On the modern AU front, and a sillier note, I have the first "Metal Shadowheart, but She's Secretly a Big Softie who Listens to Softly Sung Singer-Songwriter Music" playlist pretty much finalized. If I decide to keep doing these, the genres will evolve to reflect the AU. It's a stupid idea, but I love stupid ideas.
An Asheera/Shadowheart adventure-y, "wow you look hot after fighting" "no u" battlewives, explicit as all hell fic is at like 8k because I had to put in some emotional hurt/comfort at the end after all the violence and gratuitous amounts of oral sex. It might get even longer because I want more build, more sex, more fighting, and more aftermath. This thing could hit 10k, I really don't know with how it's turning out lmao. Needs an editing pass and whatever the fuck expansions I make to it.
The sequel to Burning Hands is written but I think it needs some tweaking before I post it. Roughly 3k in length. Maybe Karlach will finally get what she wanted? This could use some light expansion, and I know it needs line editing + more well-watered prose. Once that's fleshed out, it'll be ready to post (next week?)
Another Minthara/Lae'zel in the vein of "Minthara doms Lae'zel into the fucking dirt" is in the ideation phase. I have the general A to B to C planned out, but no writing is there yet. Won't be done for some time, sadly.
Nocturne/Shadowheart in the extreme early works. Like, basically it's just me trying to figure out how I want to write Nocturne in smut. Do I even make it graphic? This one won't be out for a while, for sure.
Word count progress for the week: 17, 663
Haven't been able to do much reading. I still need to finish Blood Bride by @raedmagdon and I'm always on my quest to sort Shadowheart/Female Character fics by no-comments and read all of those.

Friday, November 25: Nevermore, “We Disintegrate”
R.I.P. Warrel Dane (1961-2017)
Dead Heart in a Dead World was ostensibly more streamlined than previous Nevermore albums, with songs playing more like individual tracks than as part of an overarching concept or theme and Andy Sneap’s production focusing on the individual instruments over ambience.  All of this ended up giving the record more power, adding greater clarity without sacrificing any intensity.  Indeed, “We Disintegrate” was every bit as claustrophobic and violent as “The Seven Tongues of God”, but its purpose was easier to discern, as was the focused fury of Jeff Loomis and Van Williams.  And given the space to maneuver thanks to Sneap’s production, Warrel Dane sounded more dramatic and forceful than ever, even bringing back his Sanctuary-era wail in spots.  Although many longtime fans pointed to The Politics of Ecstasy and Dreaming Neon Black as Nevermore’s masterpieces, “We Disintegrate” helped make Dead Heart in a Dead World something of a minor breakthrough while maintaining their integrity.

Nevermore - My Acid Words
youtube
Death and suffering all around me, no escape so why go on When no one cares, no one's there, you die inside before you're gone I've tried to reach the highest point of vision and my dreams appear fulfilled But held before my eyes is a vision that now lies Forever searching for the purpose are we running out of time
Waiting while the acid words are feeding Watching as your will's deteriorating
When I'm dead will you remember all the things I've tried to say? This cancer inside of me destroying my life, when I rot in the ground will you care? The sands of time are pointless in a useless ugly world Nothing brings peace of mind, I leave nothing behind if my words are left unheard
Waiting while the acid words are feeding Watching as your will's deteriorating
And I've learned to watch the downgrade And I've learned to follow the eyes behind me Through the twisting hollow strange roads To the apex of our fate, so cold
And I hate the way you look at me with your frozen soulless eyes Deny it, ignore it and cover it in shame in your arrogant nameless void
Waiting while the acid words are feeding Watching as your will's deteriorating It's a one way ride and there's nothing you can do Not even suicide or my acid words can teach you anything useful

Top 10 favorite albums (or whichever ones you've been enjoying the most)
it was only this year that it occurred to me to start keeping lists of our favourite things because our memory is like swiss fucking cheese (as previously discussed lol) so this is gonna be a bit haphazard and I'm definitely gonna wake up at 02:00 in a cold sweat like "FUCK I FORGOT [x]" but. 🎵 these are the breeeeaks! 🎵 anyway.
i. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON | pink floyd hated PF as a kid listening to rock radio, their dreamy sound bored the fuck out of me, but now that I'm a stoner PF makes way more sense that's not relevant to DSotM though, I just love this album because it's about madness and entropy and death and also has the best middle track and outro track ever invented standout track: Eclipse
ii. BETWEEN THE HEART AND THE SYNAPSE | the receiving end of sirens post-hardcore concept album with copious use of harmonies and haunting lyrics. this band was a flash in the pan that left scorch marks on my entire existence standout track: Epilogue
iii. THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR | nevermore my introduction to Nevermore that still remains my favourite work by them. what a fucking band. Warrel Dane's vocals are insane. it's just good idk what to say standout track: Sentient 6
iv. MABOOL: THE STORY OF THE THREE SONS OF SEVEN | orphaned land here we start getting into albums I don't listen to from beginning to end often bc there are individual songs that I don't really care for BUT it's such a cohesive and beautiful story when you do listen to it from beginning to end that I still do it sometimes anyway. this is a concept album about Noah and the Ark by an Israeli metal band. like. come on. what more do you WANT from LIFE standout track: The Storm Still Rages Inside
v. REQUIEM FOR A DREAM OST | Clint Mansell + Kronos Quartet I am rabid for both Mansell and the Kronos Quartet. I would die for them. honourable mention to The Fountain OST here which not only is my favourite movie but it has the one song in existence that makes me say "if I were a song I would be this song" standout track: listen idk it's just two leitmotifs the entire time, a lot of them are the same tune with different spices added
vi. STRANGER FRUIT | zeal & ardor who are my favourite band so it's kinda funny it took me this long to bring them up but YKNOW "satanic negro spirituals and btw, make it metal" is a genre that is 100% tailored to me personally (their later albums are less Specific vibes-wise which is a shame but yknow what... the shit still slaps so I'm not too mad) standout track: You Ain't Coming Back
vii. BEETHOVEN'S LAST NIGHT | trans-siberian orchestra they don't just make metal Christmas music! standout track: Mephistopheles' Return
viii. GARDEN WINDOW | o'brother vibes. pure vibes. idek how else to explain this band but. whew standout track: Poison! ix. THE DOOMSTAR REQUIEM | dethklok (metalocalypse) Metalocalypse's rock opera has some of the catchiest metal songs I've ever heard. also. it's a rock opera. likeeee come ONNN *gesticulating madly* standout track: *impales self on spikes instead of trying to choose*
x. NYMPHETAMINE | cradle of filth you already know 🤘🏿 standout track: Absinthe With Faust
