"In Washington D.C., a sophisticated sewage treatment plant is turning the capital’s waste into a form of capital: living capital that is fertilizing the gardens of farms of the Mid-Atlantic region and saving vast quantities of resources.
Described by the workers’ there as a “resource recovery plant,” D.C. Water run a biogas plant and high-quality fertilizer production in the course of their dirty duty to ensure the city’s waste finds a safe endpoint.
The nation’s capital is exceptional at producing waste from the toilet bowls of the 2.2 million people who live, work, and commute through the city and its suburbs.
Reporting by Lina Zeldovich reveals that rather than trucking it all to a landfill, D.C. Water extract an awful lot of value from the capital crap, by looking at it as a resource to send through the world’s largest advanced wastewater treatment plant, which uses a “thermal hydrolysis process” in which it is sterilized, broken down, and shipped off for processing into “Bloom,” a nitrogen-rich, slow-release fertilizer product.
The other “Black Gold”
At their facility in southwest Washington, huge aeration tanks percolate the poo of everyone from tourists to the President. After it’s all fed into enormous pressure cookers where, under the gravity of six earth atmospheres and 300°F, the vast black sludge is rendered harmless.
Next this “Black Gold,” as Zeldovich described it, is pumped into massive bacterial-rich tanks where microbes breakdown large molecules like fats, proteins, and carbs into smaller components, shrinking the overall tonnage of sewage to 450 tons per day down from 1,100 at the start of the process.
This mass-micro-munching also produces methane, which when fed into an onsite turbine, generates a whopping 10 megawatts of green energy which can power 8,000 nearby homes. [Note: Natural gas (which is mostly methane) is definitely greener than coal and oil, but it still causes a significant amount of emissions and greenhouse gases.] The 450 tons of remaining waste from the D.C. feces are sent into another room where conveyor belts ring out excess fluid before feeding it through large rollers which squash it into small congregate chunks.
D.C. Water sends this to another company called Homestead Gardens for drying, aging, and packaging before it’s sold as Bloom.
“I grow everything with it, squashes, tomatoes, eggplants,” Bill Brower, one of the plant’s engineers, tells Zeldovich. “Everything grows great and tastes great,” he adds.
“And I’m not the only one who thinks so. We’ve heard from a lot of people that they’ve got the best response they’ve ever seen from the plants. Particularly with leafy greens because that nitrogen boost does well with leafy plants. And the plants seem to have fewer diseases and fewer pests around—probably because Bloom helps build healthy soils.”
While farms around the country are facing nutrient depletion in soils from over-farming, turning to synthetic fertilizers to make up the difference, introducing more such thermal hydrolysis plants could truly revolutionize the way humans look at their feces—as a way of restoring the country’s soils rather than polluting them. As Mike Rowe would say, it only takes a person who’s willing to get their hands dirty."

Rethinking Our Disposable Culture: How to Spend Wisely and Sustainably in the 21st Century 🌍💚
As we delve deeper into the 21st century, our society stands at a crossroads. The path we've been on—characterized by a growing throwaway culture fueled by increased disposable incomeis unsustainable. It's time to consider how we might turn the tide.
The Economics of Disposability
Disposable income has undoubtedly improved living standards for many. Yet, this financial flexibility has also led to an increase in disposable products, fast fashion, and rapidly obsolete technologies. This trend is economically beneficial in the short term but environmentally and socially detrimental in the long run. 📉🌎
Rethinking Consumption
To mitigate the impact of throwaway culture, a shift in consumer mentality is essential:
Value-Based Spending: Align your spending with your values. If sustainability matters to you, support brands that prioritize eco-friendly practices.
Invest in Repairability: Choose products designed for longevity and that can be easily repaired, reducing the need to buy new.
Community Engagement: Get involved in or start local initiatives that promote sustainable living, from community gardens to tool-sharing libraries.
Policy and Change
Policy change can also drive significant shifts. Advocating for regulations that require producers to be responsible for the lifecycle of their products can decrease the volume of waste generated.
By adjusting how we view and utilize our disposable income, we can combat the rise of throwaway culture. It's about creating a future where we value what we own, understand the true cost of disposability, and choose a sustainable path forward. 🌍💚

Recycling Centre Site Visit ✨
Today I had the opportunity to visit the Hazardous Waste Recycling Centre in Gateshead (i): a tour organised by Suez, the site owner ♻️
I am pleased with how transparent Laura and Hannah, our guides, have been while explaining what happens to the local recycling and general waste. No question has been left unanswered, and topics have been discussed with the most environmentally friendly tone: everything led to the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle 🙌🏻
The overall experience exceeded my expectations as the amount of knowledge I gained was HUGE ⛰️
This is how I would summarise today’s experience in few points:
1. Disposable vapes are a PROBLEM 💨
Strangely classified by UK Legislation as “toys, leisure and sport equipment”, they have been responsible for numerous fires at the recycling centre. E-cigarettes contain lithium batteries, which can easily ignite when segregated with the other waste streams. Furthermore, recycling one 200L barrel full of disposable vapes costs more than £2000 😰
2. Machines that sort general waste out DO NOT EXIST ⚙️
Due to complex composition of general waste, there is no machine or automated process able to effectively separate non-recyclables from recyclables that ended up in the general waste. At Suez, sorting is done BY HANDS 🤲🏻
3. Energy-from-Waste (EFW) requires A LOT of ENERGY ⚡️
Suez’s EFW facility has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 30.000 homes via waste incineration. However, the majority of energy goes back into the facility to keep the process going: fire is on 24/7 🔥
4. Separate food waste segregation at home is COMING SOON 🍔
Around 6.5 MILLION tonnes of food waste come from households every year. The shocking thing is: around 70% of that food waste IS STILL EDIBLE when people dispose of it (4.5 MILLION tonnes). Suez compared it to 90 Royal Albert Halls! 😱
5. Load contamination is a serious thing ☣️
Staff works hard every day to ensure skips contain the waste they have been designed for. When hazardous materials get in the same bin with recyclables, the WHOLE load becomes hazardous. This means that all the waste contained in that bin is very likely to lose its recycling potential. As it has been said today: “It is better losing some recycling in the general waste than contaminating an entire load of recycling and losing all of it” 😞 This is such a powerful sentence.
For those interested in knowing about waste disposal and recycling, I strongly recommend this experience. Event details can be found on Eventbrite and many waste sites are available for tour booking 🤩
Ah, forgot this: IT’S FREE 🤯

even does know what plants are though. (as per doctor who canon, the way ships manage to keep oxygen on long voyages is via having literal forests in them. now, nothing to that extent, obviously, they weren’t that well-equipped or funded. but there’s definitely plants In There, probably relegated to a much more ordered existence, think the difference between a natural forest and one grown for logging.) at least they have that. they have seen plants. not often, but they have.
i don’t think they really understand plants beyond their functions (to eat, keep everyone breathing, etc.) whereas with natural beauties and animals and other such things that even has no experience with and can wonder over, they can’t really. do that with plants. the ability to admire a flower rather than immediately think of it in terms of resources lost and gained in its creation is a skill they have to learn.
but you know. at least they have seen them. that’s something. that’s slightly less depressing, right.

How Skip Hire Helps Keep Your Construction Site Safe
When managing a construction project, safety is always the top priority. From site hazards to potential environmental concerns, construction sites are inherently dangerous places. One of the most effective, yet often overlooked, tools in ensuring safety is skip hire. Skip hire provides a practical solution for managing waste, reducing hazards, and maintaining a clean and organised site. This article explores how skip hire can enhance safety on construction sites, from better waste management to improved workflow.
Tumblr media
1. Safe Waste Management Reduces Hazards
Construction sites generate a substantial amount of waste, including sharp objects, broken glass, metal shards, and large pieces of debris. When left unmanaged, these items become major safety hazards. Workers can easily trip, fall, or sustain injuries from sharp or hazardous materials. By using skip hire, construction companies ensure that waste is collected in a designated, secure container, preventing potential injuries and creating a cleaner, safer environment.
For example, if you're working on a renovation project in Skip hire in Sanderstead, or an extension in Skip hire in Kingston, having a skip on site allows workers to immediately dispose of waste, reducing the clutter and potential risks. This waste management practice ensures that all rubbish, from small debris to larger items like old furniture or building materials, is removed safely and regularly.
2. Prevents Accumulation of Hazardous Materials
Certain construction materials, such as asbestos, chemicals, and paint, can pose serious health risks to workers if they’re not disposed of properly. If hazardous waste is left on-site, it not only increases the risk of exposure but also makes it harder to manage the materials effectively. Skips designed for hazardous waste allow companies to adhere to legal waste disposal regulations, keeping workers and the surrounding environment safe.
Hiring a skip specifically for hazardous materials ensures that such items are kept separate from general construction debris, making it easier for waste disposal companies to handle the materials according to safety standards. For instance, in areas like Skip hire in Redhill, a specialised hazardous waste skip can be rented to safely dispose of materials like chemical solvents, paints, or broken electrical items, preventing contamination or exposure on the construction site.
3. Promotes an Organised Work Environment
Clutter on a construction site is more than just an eyesore—it’s a safety risk. Workers may trip over discarded materials, or equipment may become harder to access if waste is scattered around. Regular use of skip hire ensures that construction sites remain organised, with designated areas for waste disposal. The cleaner the site, the easier it is to navigate, which in turn reduces the risk of accidents and injuries.
By setting up a designated skip for different types of waste, such as wood, concrete, or plastic, workers can quickly dispose of materials in a controlled manner. This streamlined process also prevents workers from wasting time looking for somewhere to dispose of waste, enhancing productivity while maintaining safety.
4. Improves Site Accessibility
A cluttered construction site can restrict access to tools, equipment, and important areas of the project. Keeping large piles of waste around can limit the movement of workers and machinery, slowing down progress and increasing the likelihood of accidents. Having an accessible waste disposal system in place, such as regular skip hire, allows workers and equipment to move freely, ensuring that safety standards are met.
For example, when skips are strategically placed in safe, accessible areas, workers can quickly dispose of materials without needing to leave the work zone or travel far. This promotes faster work and reduces the risk of accidents that can occur when workers are forced to navigate around piles of waste.
5. Fosters Environmental Safety
Construction waste, especially if it includes hazardous materials, can pose significant risks to the environment. Without proper disposal methods, waste can end up in the wrong places—contaminating local water sources, soil, or air. By opting for professional skip hire services, construction companies ensure that waste is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Many skip hire services now offer recycling options, which can help minimise the environmental impact of construction projects.
For example, in Skip hire in Kingston, many skip hire companies provide environmentally-conscious services that sort and recycle materials, reducing landfill waste. By separating recyclable materials from general waste, construction companies contribute to sustainability and ensure that hazardous substances don’t end up where they shouldn’t.
6. Compliance with Health and Safety Regulations
Construction companies are required to comply with strict health and safety regulations, including how waste is handled on-site. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in hefty fines, delays in the project, or even legal action. Using skip hire ensures that construction sites remain in line with both local and national health and safety regulations.
Professional skip hire services are well-versed in industry standards and can advise on the best types of skips for different waste types. Whether it’s regular construction debris or specific materials like asbestos or chemicals, a reputable skip hire company will help ensure that your waste disposal methods meet all legal requirements, protecting your company from potential penalties.
7. Cost-Effective Solution
While safety and compliance are top priorities, managing a construction site efficiently also requires cost-effective solutions. Hiring skips regularly allows construction companies to manage waste without needing additional staff or resources to dispose of it. The cost of hiring a skip is relatively small when compared to the costs of accidents or fines due to unsafe waste practices.
Moreover, by hiring a skip, construction sites are kept cleaner, which can also result in fewer interruptions due to accidents or injuries. A well-maintained site is a safer site, and a safer site translates into fewer work stoppages and more productivity, ultimately saving the company time and money.
Conclusion
In the fast-paced, demanding world of construction, safety should always come first. Skip hire is an essential tool in ensuring that construction sites remain safe, organised, and compliant with legal regulations. By using skip hire services in areas like Skip hire in Sanderstead, Skip hire in Kingston, and Skip hire in Redhill, construction companies can reduce the risks of accidents, maintain an organised work environment, and protect the environment—all while improving productivity.
When it comes to construction site safety, waste management is often an overlooked yet crucial aspect. By implementing regular skip hire, construction companies can make their sites safer, more efficient, and more environmentally responsible. It’s a small investment that brings huge safety benefits.

How Modern Liquid Waste Disposal Balances Industry Needs & Sustainability!
In commercial settings, a large quantity of liquid waste is generated every day, and according to Australian regulations, appropriate liquid waste disposal is a critical requirement for businesses to maintain uninterrupted business operations and sustainability.
Especially various industrial and commercial sectors face increasing regulations for waste management hazardous waste and environmental expectations.
Therefore, balancing operational needs with sustainability requires both technical expertise and a commitment to best practices, which is why many businesses choose to work with recognised waste management companies.
Tumblr media
Balancing Industry Needs and Sustainability:
Industries generate various types of liquid waste, including oils, chemicals, grease, and contaminated water. Improper disposal can lead to significant environmental harm, such as water pollution, soil degradation, and threats to public health.
To address these challenges, recognised waste management companies collect a variety of waste from liquid waste to e-waste and recycle them properly in adherence to recent regulations proposed in the year 2024.
These companies have trained staff and specialist equipment, ensuring waste is collected, transported, and treated efficiently and safely. They strictly follow the guidelines to set clear standards for pollution prevention, public health protection, and sustainable practices to save their clients avoiding penalties and termination.
The Australian government imposed these rules to treat and dispose of liquid waste in ways that minimise environmental impact, encourage recycling, and promote the reuse of treated wastewater.
Therefore, businesses should work with authorised waste management companies that apply a range of advanced techniques like sedimentation and clarification to separate solids from liquids, filtration removes suspended particles, and chemical treatment neutralises hazardous substances.
They also apply biological treatment by using microorganisms to break down organic matter, and evaporation or distillation reduces waste volume for easier handling. These methods not only ensure compliance but also support resource recovery and reduce the overall environmental footprint of industrial activities.
Overall, businesses should work with trusted companies to not only safeguard the environment but also support efficient, responsible, and legally sound business operations.
