Tell me mimi, do you love water that much? Water made oc think in plm, same goes for ffy, now our jk has something weird on going chemistry with rain in iwyts. Just curious 🤔
I’m actually terrified of being in the ocean but it’s the most majestic thing for me!! It’s probably from watching Jaws as a child that got me scared of being in open water 😂 but I fear the powerlessness of being in it (like FFY JK), believe in mermaids (like FFY OC), and it also makes me think (like PLM OC). I looove being on the shore and just watching and listening to the waves. And the rain drives me nuts but I love it, love the smell and the sounds. There’s so much love and fear for it and it’s so beautiful 😌
All that to say is that yes, I love it water. And we’ll see what weird relationship IWYTS JK has towards the rain 😅

PLM - (Hatsume Industrues pt1) A Tinkaton and Hatsume are arguing for several hours, about who the large pile of discarded scrap metal and electronics belongs too. Tinkaton, waving Hammer–“Tinka Tink Tinnk ,Tiiiinnnkaatonnn! (Paws off my metal crazy person!)”. Mei, oblivious to the Hammer and madly smiling due to being seized with inspiration “Ok small pink Test Subject – how about a trade and a role in Hatsume Industries?"
PLM (Hatsume Industries pt2). Tinkaton, thinks for a moment and lowers the Hammer slightly – “Tiinnkkaaaaaaaa.... (I’m listening...)”. A week later, Hawks is on patrol flying over Musafa, when he is nearly knocked out of the sky by several Covriknights, flying as if their lives depended on it. Hawks, hovering in place – “What the..?”
PLM (Hatsume Industries pt3). He is then forced to dodge again as a Tinkaton hurtles past holding a Hammer with Rocket-booster attachments, and wearing a Jetpack (complete with parachute install), Hover-shoes and a maniac-grin of pure vindictive-happiness.Hawks, blinking in a state of confusion – “Was that ‘Hatsume Industries’ printed on the side of the Jetpack???”
PLM (Hatsume Industries pt 4). Meanwhile Present Mic, Eraserhead (with matched expressions of disbelief) and Powerloader (in a state of ‘in-need-of-Coffee, preferably spiked’) are watching a cue of TinkaTinks, TinkaTuffs and Tinkatons (not to mention at least 3 Bagons and 1 Duduo), each hauling a pile of metal scraps (in carts with Hatsume Industries on the side), outside the Support Labs door at UA.
PLM (Hatsume Industries pt5). The door opens and a Tinkatuff with a Jetpack and Hammer with Rocket-boosters flies out, streaking past the teachers, through a window and into the sky (“Tttttttttttttttiiiiiiinnnnnnkkkkkkaaaaa!!! (Wwwwhhhhhheeeeeee!!!). Mei’s voice from inside the lab – “Next client please!”. With that the Tinkatuff at the head of the cue wheels their cart in, the door shuts and the cue moves forward in a (mostly) orderly manner.
Horrifying!

In Defense Of Anarchist Memory: One-Hundred Years Since The Death Of Ricardo Flores Magón
Statement from anarchists in so-called Mexico calling for a year of activity to defend and continue the anarchist memory of Ricardo Flores Magón, one-hundred years since his death. La versión en español sigue a la versión en inglés.
Let every man and woman who loves freedom and the anarchist ideal, propagate it with determination, with tenacity, without concern for mockery, without measuring the danger, without regard to consequences; let’s get to work comrades, and the future will be our anarchist ideal
-Ricardo Flores Magón
On November 21, 1922, the anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón was assassinated in a prison cell in Leavenworth, Kansas, in the United States. One-hundred years since his assassination at the hands of henchmen of the United States government, official history has sought to sugarcoat the life and struggle of Flores Magón and the Mexican Liberal Party (PLM), presenting him as a “precursor” to the so-called “Mexican revolution,” and of the reformism of Francisco I. Madero. They have tried to portray Ricardo Flores Magón as a journalist and liberal writer who fought against the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship, seeking to erase his revolutionary and anarchist character, in order to recover his figure and use it for political capital.
Ricardo Flores Magón was against all caudillismo and cult of personality. He energetically rejected the nickname “Magonismo” to refer to the anarchists of the PLM affirming that this was a term used by the government to make people believe that it was just another movement like “Maderismo.” The term was not only rejected by Ricardo Flores Magón, but also by the men and women of the PLM, “As anarchists we do not have idols,” they said. Today, those in power seek to use the term “Magonismo” to confuse people and avoid calling the PLM and Flores Magón as they were: anarchists. Hiding, at the convenience of their interests, what these anarchists truly fought for and to what they offered their lives: the abolition of private property, church, and state.
Ricardo Flores Magón was a committed anarchist, combatting throughout his life what he called the dark trinity: authority, capital, and clergy. For that reason, he experienced persecution, exile, imprisonment. Yet, his unbreakable spirit felt a passion for freedom so immense, that none of the torture inflicted upon him succeeded in appeasing that flame which burned in his chest. Together with other men and women, he promoted social revolution from below. A revolution that didn’t seek to raise a new tyrant to power, but rather to destroy the very foundations of the capitalist system of domination and exploitation, so that the red flag of land and freedom could wave high and free like the wind, for everyone.
With the announcement of the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T) declaring 2022 as the year of Ricardo Flores Magón, as anarchist individuals and collectives, we declare that the memory of Magón and the PLM cannot be recuperated by the grotesque morning news conference spectacles of López Obrador. On the contrary, we reaffirm that the memory of the PLM forms part of the history of the struggles of the people for their emancipation and freedom. It is the history of Ricardo and Enrique Flores Magón, of Librado Rivera, Práxedis Guerrero, Anselmo Figueroa, of the Indigenous Mayo Fernando Palomares, of the Indigenous Yaqui Javier Huitimea, of Hilario Salas, of the mythical Santanón, of Cándido Donato Padua, Blas Lara, Emilio Guerrero, of the Indigenous Tarahumara Camilio Jiménez, of the tireless Nicolás T. Bernal, of Joe Hill, Jack Mosby, and the Wobblies, of the compañeras Margarita Ortega, Maria Talavera, Teresa Brousse, Concha Rivera, of Francisco Mendoza, of Jesús Rangel, of the newspaper Regenaración, of the brave PLM guerrilla fighters, of the strike at Río Blanco, at Cananea, of the insurrections of Acayucan, Las Vacas, or Palomas. It is the history of thousands of insurrectionary women and men who struggled in the ranks of the PLM for the freedom and regeneration of community.
It is the memory of rural and city workers who struggled to end economic exploitation. It is the memory of our fallen compañerxs like Tobi, Ruffo, Sacra, and so many others who gave their lives for a free world, of men and women who sought to do away with borders and flags, of those who dreamed to destroy prisons, police, and militaries. It is the memory of those of us who are enemies of all states, all authoritarianism, and all hierarchy.
For everything above, we invite anarchist collectives, organizations, and individuals to participate in the Activities in Defense of Anarchist Memory: 100 Years Since the Death of Ricardo Flores Magón, beginning on January 7, 2022, the 115th anniversary of the strike in Río Blanco, until December 30, 2022, 112th anniversary of the death of Práxedis G. Guerrero.
It is not our intention to add another date to the book of saints of the left. They already have too many martyrs and heroes. Our aspiration is to rescue anarchist memory, to know, remember, study, divulge, and propagate it, in order to continue writing the history of anarchist struggle through action. To this end, we invite all anarchists, those proud to be such, to organize forums, discussions, book presentations, study groups, art exhibitions, movie presentations, radio programs, rallies, meetings, concentrations, mobilizations, and anything that will help us turn memory, our memory, into an anarchist weapon against all tyrants and oppressors. The fight for our memory is another area of struggle against our oppressors and we are ready to give it.
Today just as yesterday, the exploiters are maintained by blood and fire. As all authority, the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T) utilizes violence and repression to impose its politics and megaprojects, and not at any moment has it hesitated to persecute, assassinate, and imprison anyone who defies it. This is the case of the seven compañeros of the community assembly of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón, in the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, birthplace of Ricardo, who have been in prison for over seven years for maintaining alive their community autonomy, resisting with tenacity and courage the continued attacks on part of the owners of money and power.
Thus, while paying homage to the legacy of Ricardo Flores Magón, the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T) continues to reinforce capitalist oppression. On one hand it manages it, with the implementation of assistance and palliative programs which do nothing to reverse the misery and suffering of the thousands of proletarian and Indigenous women and men who live in this region. On the other hand, it magnifies it, with an alarming expansion of militarization in our communities in order to impose megaprojects like the poorly named Mayan Train and the Interoceanic Corridor, deepening the dispossession of territory and the devastation of the earth, in benefit of the dominant class.
One hundred year since the death of Ricardo Flores Magón, as anarchists we will continue to wave the black flag of freedom. We continue opposing whatever government, no matter if they say they are of the left, because for us “changing the master is not a source of freedom nor well-being.”
Let’s continue the example of the anarchists of the Mexican Liberal party, fighting for life, holding up the flag of Regeneración, seeking land, bread, and freedom for everyone. With rebellion we shout, while we move like water.
Long Live Land and Freedom!
Long Live Anarchy!
Freedom for the Prisoners of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón!

Conservators at the Brooklyn Museum examined and analyzed the fabric in this egúngún masquerade dance costume before going on display in One: Egúngún. This type of costume is found throughout the Ọ̀yọ́ region of southwestern Nigeria. When worn, the costume conceals the wearer to embody the spirit of the ancestral dead and transform the wearer into a returned ancestor. A long wooden beam, which rests on top of the wearer’s head, is draped with many textile panels suspended in layers.
This costume’s densely layered textile panels are incredibly varied. They include both natural and synthetic fibers, hand-woven and factory-made weave structures, many dyed colors and printed patterns, and a number of metal appliques. The natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, are primarily found on the inner layers. The synthetic fibers, located mostly on the outer layers, include patterns of velvet and faux fur in bright colors.
Recent research has demonstrated that this costume was made sometime between 1920 and 1948. The curator wondered if any of the synthetic textile panels might be recent replacements or additions made with newer materials that didn’t yet exist at the time of manufacture.
Conservators at the museum identified the fibers using Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM), a contrast-enhancing technique used to investigate optical properties of samples. PLM uses polarizing filters to configure the movement of light waves, forcing them to vibrate in a single direction. The polarized light interacts with the sample in specific ways depending on the material, which allows for identification.
Tumblr media
We took samples of the different synthetic fibers and examined each of them under a polarizing light microscope, looking for defining characteristics such as shape and form, or how the fibers refract light. In the image below, showing fiber samples from this costume, you can see that acetate fibers appear yellow when oriented in one direction and blue when oriented in the opposite direction.
All of the velvets and faux fur we sampled turned out to be a combination of natural silk and synthetic viscose rayon and acetate. Both of these synthetic fibers were already in use in the early 20th century, which means these textile panels could be original. This information lets us better understand the piece, its history, and the conditions in which it was made and used.
The egúngún masquerade dance costume will be displayed in One: Egúngún through August 18 so make sure to see it in person!

Geology Liveblogs: How To Look At Rocks
(aka, the post with the pretty pictures and videos.)
So, you're a petrologist on the go, and you've got rock that you want to know what minerals it has.
How do you find out what minerals it has in it.
The Three Main Techniques
There are three main ways you can look at a rock.
The first is by looking at a hand sample. Which is just... looking at a rock with your eyes. Maybe with a hand lens as well. It's main advantages it's that it's a very portable technique. You just need your happy self, and maybe an eensy hand lens you can fit on your lanyard, and away you go. It's great out in the field.
It's main problem is that only really works on coarse grained rocks. If it's fine grained, you are out of luck.
Also, a lot of minerals can look similar in a hand sample. Even ones that you wouldn't think looked similar at all.
Take pyroxene and quartz. Very different minerals that you really don't want to mix up when you're trying to work out what a rock is. Clinopyroxene (diopside, specifically,) photographed by Rob Lavinsky. Quartz, by JJ Harrison.
You'd think these are very different looking, right? Nope! Because in a hand sample, they often just look shiny.
Another technique is taking it to a lab. Fire lasers at it (or ion beams, those get used sometimes.) This is great, you can get very detailed measures of a mineral's chemical composition, and all sorts of other good stuff.
It's main disadvantages are that you... need a lab with fancy equipment to do it. (So you've probably had to look at some hand samples, to decide which to ship over to the lab.) And it's a teensy bit destructive. If you're looking at a common rock, it's basically non-destructive, but this whole process give meteorite geologists hives because of oh my god it's so destructive.
Then there is microscopy. If you take a section of rock, slice it thinly, glue it to a microscope slide, and then grind it down even more thinly, most of the minerals become transparent, so the light from the microscope can pass through them. So now, you can actually see those goddamned fine grained minerals that your hand lens was no help for.
Microscopy is an elegant weapon, for a more civilised age-- in other words, people don't use it much anymore. Firing lasers at things gives you more data, anyway. It gets used in a teaching context, because it let's people deal with minerals concretely, without having to deal with hand samples all the time.
The Microscope Mambo
So, microscopes.
Petrological microscopes are different from biological microscopes in a few different ways.
The light from them is always polarised. It can either be polarised once (plane polarised light, or PPL), or polarised twice (cross polarised light, or XPL.) Generally you can swap between the two on the fly by pulling the cross polarising thing in and out.
The stage rotates. Because there's a lot of useful mineralogical information that's only obvious if you can spin your slide. (Pro tip: Don't be like me, and spin too fast. You will get dizzy.)
Both PPL and XPL get used because they give you different information about a mineral. (Technically, you should always look at things under PPL first, then XPL.)
PPL gives you:
Colour: A lot of the time, when a mineral is cut thin enough to be seen though, even if a chunk of it would have a colour, it appears colourless. But some particularly strong coloured minerals do have a distinct colour in PPL. Garnet is a good example (which I unfortunately cannot find a picture of in PPL) as is glaucophane (aka the thing that makes blueschist blue.) Photograph by Ruth Siddall.
Pleochroism: Related to colour. Some minerals change colour as you change the angle you're are looking at them, ie by rotating the stage. Not all minerals have this, but it can be a useful way of distinguising otherwise similar looking minerals. Can be a pain, because it can sometimes show up in XPL and get in the way. Glaucophane is also pleochroic, it changes from blue to purple when you rotate it. Photography by Ruth Siddall.
Relief: Some minerals-- stand out more. Have thicker outlines. Look taller. Kinda hard to describe.
Cleavage: Because of their chemical structure, some minerals get crack-like things at distinctive angles to each other. In theory, this is very helpful. In practice, a lot of the time you can only see one set of cleavage if at all.
Fracture : Sometimes grains of minerals get broken. That's fracture. Distinct from cleavage.
XPL gives you:
Isotropy/Anisotropy: Isotropic things have the same properties in all crystal orientations, and look black under XPL. Glass and garnet are common examples.
Birefringence : So, under XPL things look coloured, but generally different colours to their colours under normal light. What colour they look like depends on how thick they are cut. Generally high order birefringence look like if Lisa Frank designed a mineral. Low order birefringence things look kinda grey. It's a spectrum more or less. The middle bright purple thing is olivine, which has a fairly high birefringence. Plagioclase, which is low order, and also has a feature we will talk about later called twinning.
Extinction Angle: Every mineral that isn't isotropic will, as you turn it, appear black every 90 degrees when looked at under XPL. This is called extinction, and the extinction angle is what the angle it goes extinct at compared to it's cleavage. Extinctio can also be undulose, which means it goes across the crystal in a wave as you rotate it.
Twinning : is when there is a difference in crsytal orientation within a single crystal. You can sometimes see it in PPL, but it's most obvious in XPL, because different parts of the one crystal will go extinct at different angles. Here's a video of it in plagioclase. (CW: Video is spinning, and there is also some slow flashing.)
youtube
d
And that's microscopy!
A Vaguely Related Rant About Quartz
Quartz is my bête jaune pâle.
People will tell you that quartz is, in and of itself, distinctive in thin section microscopy. They will tell you that nothing else is quite that some cream colour in XPL as quartz.
They are... okay, it would be unfair to say they are 'lying'. But.
Quartz's main distinguishing feature is it's lack of distinguishing features. It is colourless and incredibly low relief in PPL. In XPL, it has a very low birefringence that sometimes looks cream coloured. Sometimes Sometimes it undulose extinction, to give a small piece of excitement in your dull life.
Sometimes you spend several minutes staring at it, because it's relief is so low it can be hard to tell if something is multiple quartz grains, or some sort of feldspar with very 'chunky' twinning.
The only nice thing quartz has ever done to me is be in a thin section quartzite in an exam , which is at least easy to describe quickly.

Authornimmmmmm im so sorry im late to the new PLM chapter 🥹 i cant tell you how many tears i shed reading this chapter, especially when jungkook was being distant and oc waving the white flag as always. At the same time, i understand the need for jungkook to organise his thoughts, reflect on the things he said in the middle of the argument, and the way he distanced himself to protect the both of them from more hurtful words being thrown out ☹️☹️ but my heart felt lighter when jungkook drove home to oc because he knew she's been crying ☹️ like where can i get a man like that⁉️⁉️⁉️ aaaaahh this angsty piece is very much needed authornim! Also, happy new year!!!! I cant wait to see what masterpieces you'll bless us with this year 🥰
Pls never apologize! Will always be thankful of your support for this couple and my stories 🥰 and yes, jk felt that the best thing for them was for him to distance himself lest he makes things worse, and that’s love, too. But as we know, he can’t resist OC, and so here we are
Happy new year to you! I hope you have an amazing one ahead 🥰🥰
