How to Deal with Windows 10/11 Nonsense
This is more for my own reference to keep all of this on one post. But hopefully others will find this useful too! So yeah, as the title says, this is a to organize links and resources related to handling/removing nonsense from Windows 10 and Windows 11. Especially bloatware and stuff like that Copilot AI thing.
First and foremost, there's O&O Software's ShutUp10++ (an antispy tool that help give you more control over Windows settings) and App Buster (helps remove bloatware and manage applications). I've used these myself for Windows 10 and they work great, and the developers have stated that these should work with Windows 11 too!
10AppsManager is another bloatware/app management tool, though at the moment it seems to only work on Windows 10.
Winaero Tweaker, similar to ShupUp10++ in that it gives you more control over Windows to disable some of the more annoying settings, such as disabling web search from the taskbar/start menu and disabling ads/tips/suggestions in different parts of the OS. I think ShupUp10++ covers the same options as this one, but I'm not entirely sure.
OpenShell, helps simplify the Start Menu and make it look more like the classic start menu from older versions of Windows. Should work with both 10 and 11 according to the readme.
Notes on how to remove that one horrible AI spying snapshots feature that's being rolled out on Windows 11 right now.
Article on how to remove Copilot (an AI assistant) from Windows 11. (Edit 11/20/2024) Plus a post with notes on how to remove it from Windows 10 too, since apparently it's not just limited to 11 now.
Win11Debloat, a simple script that can be used to automatically remove pretty much all of the bullshit from both 10 and 11, though a lot of its features are focused on fixing Windows 11 in particular (hence the name). Also has options you can set to pick and choose what changes you want!
Article on how to set up Windows 11 with a local account on a new computer, instead of having to log in with a Microsoft account. To me, this is especially important because I much prefer having a local account than let Microsoft have access to my stuff via a cloud account. Also note this article and this article for more or less the same process.
I will add to this as I find more resources. I'm hoping to avoid Windows 11 for as long as possible, and I've already been used the O&O apps to keep Windows 10 trimmed down and controlled. But if all else fails and I have to use Windows 11 on a new computer, then I plan to be as prepared as possible.
Edit 11/1/2024: Two extra things I wanted to add onto here.
A recommended Linux distro for people who want to use Linux instead of Windows.
How to run a Windows app on Linux, using Wine. Note that this will not work for every app out there, though a lot of people out there are working on testing different apps and figuring out how to get them to work in Wine.
The main app I use to help with my art (specifically for 3D models to make references when I need it) is Windows only. If I could get it to work on Linux, it would give me no reason to use Windows outside of my work computer tbh (which is a company laptop anyways).

1 in 5 People Could Have Long COVID - Published Nov 8, 2024
By Dennis Thompson
FRIDAY, Nov. 8, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- More than 1 in 5 Americans likely suffer from long COVID, a new AI-assisted review has found.
The analysis suggests that nearly 23% of U.S. adults experience the symptoms of long COVID, according to results published Nov. 8 in the journal Med.
That’s much higher than the 7% prevalence of long COVID that’s been suggested by other studies, researchers said.
“Questions about the true burden of long COVID -- questions that have thus far remained elusive -- now seem more within reach,” said senior researcher Hossein Estiri, head of AI research at Mass General Brigham in Boston.
For the study, researchers developed an AI tool that can sift through mounds of electronic health records looking for the frequently subtle symptoms related to long COVID.
These symptoms can occur in a wide range of body systems, and include fatigue, chronic cough, heart problems and “brain fog.” They typically develop weeks or months after a person shakes off their initial COVID-19 infection.
“Our AI tool could turn a foggy diagnostic process into something sharp and focused, giving clinicians the power to make sense of a challenging condition,” Estiri said in a Mass General news release.
The AI specifically looks for symptoms that can’t be explained by a person’s medical history, have persisted for two months or longer and occur following a COVID infection, researchers said.
For example, the AI can detect if shortness of breath might be explained by pre-existing heart failure or asthma, rather than long COVID.
“Physicians are often faced with having to wade through a tangled web of symptoms and medical histories, unsure of which threads to pull, while balancing busy caseloads. Having a tool powered by AI that can methodically do it for them could be a game-changer,” said lead researcher Dr. Alaleh Azhir, an internal medicine resident at Brigham and Women’s.
Based on these parameters, the AI estimated that nearly 23% of Americans likely have long COVID, a figure that researchers argue aligns more closely with national trends.
The researchers plan to release the AI publicly on open access, so doctors and health care systems can employ and test it.

i did brown puzzlehunt 2024 (link!) with members of test solution bees ignore! the automated tools in their spreadsheet template kept pushing my pre-hunt drawing backward so that people couldn't see it upon opening our sheet
Tumblr media
(full disclosure, this was referenced from another artist's work - can't take full credit for it)
bph24 was a really wide hunt with lots of small rounds, featuring tons of top-notch art and non-static presentation. i liked it a lot! it just wasn't really a single-weekend sort of hunt, so our team of 4 didn't finish before the event ended lol
solutions won't be available for a bit, so i'll non-spoiler-ily list off some stuff that i really liked and would recommend checking out:
I might be biased because it was the only one from the round that actually worked well during the hunt (their website had load issues), but letter troxd was fun and simple: https://www.brownpuzzlehunt.com/puzzle/lettertroxd if you're reading this soon after i posted it, the website might not work without a login, sorry!
Tumblr media
there was a short story murder mystery puzzle called the god of the labyrinth which was cool! i think this is a currently underexplored puzzle hunt genre, so i like seeing more of them, although it's always a time investment to read and digest one. this is accessible as a pdf here: https://www.flipbookpdf.net/web/files/uploads/f465b8d06c51eb130b2b8bfdd04181797ff97bb8202404.pdf
Tumblr media
instagram was a pretty nice puzzle also, although it takes a keen eye (and having a working instagram account) to spot all of the relevant details on the page. the puzzle is entirely contained in this account page: https://www.instagram.com/ray.of.sunshine1997/
Tumblr media
and the last one i'll mention is committing financial crimes, a konundrum where you fill out a really stupid irs form. as usual i willingly subjected myself to this and it was definitely cursed. the whole thing is accessible from this drive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GRNNzrWRSzcuVzHmZsA_ZMD3gDlvGNZI/view i think they manually verified our solution to this?
Tumblr media
i had a lot of fun! super props to the puzzle club at brown university for putting this on. no rest for the weary though because cmu is next :)
(oh, and i also assume the data meta is actually quite cool - but we haven't finished it yet so i can't say for sure that it all holds up to scrutiny. here's hoping though)

Google’s EC assist:Revolutionising Enhanced Conversions setup
In the ever-evolving world of digital marketing, staying on top of the latest tools and features can feel like a full-time job. On July 5, 2024, Google introduced a game-changing tool that’s set to make life easier for marketers everywhere: EC Assist. This Chrome extension is designed to simplify the often complex process of setting up Enhanced Conversions for Google Ads. Let’s dive into what this means for you and your marketing strategies.
Tumblr media
1. What is EC Assist?
EC Assist is a Chrome extension developed by Google to help advertisers troubleshoot and optimize their Enhanced Conversions setup. Enhanced Conversions, for those who might be unfamiliar, allow advertisers to send hashed first-party conversion data to Google, powering tools like Smart Bidding for better ad performance. While crucial for optimizing Google Ads campaigns, setting up Enhanced Conversions correctly has been a challenge for many marketers – until now.
2. How EC Assist Works
The beauty of EC Assist lies in its simplicity. Here’s how it works:
1. Install the EC Assist Chrome extension
2. Run a test conversion on your website
3. EC Assist identifies potential issues and suggests next steps
This straightforward process takes the guesswork out of Enhanced Conversions setup, making it accessible to marketers of all skill levels.
3. Benefits for Marketers
The introduction of EC Assist brings several key benefits:
Time-saving: Reduces the time spent troubleshooting Enhanced Conversions setup
Accuracy: Helps ensure correct implementation, leading to more reliable data
Accessibility: Makes advanced features more approachable for less tech-savvy users
Improved performance: Correct setup of Enhanced Conversions can lead to better ad performance
4. Industry Reactions
The digital marketing community has shown mixed reactions to EC Assist. Scott Carruthers, Head of PPC, was among the first to spot and share the update on LinkedIn, generating significant buzz.
Some marketers have expressed relief at having a tool to simplify what they’ve found to be a complex process. Others, who haven’t struggled with Enhanced Conversions setup, see it as a nice-to-have rather than a necessity.
Interestingly, Boris Beceric and Rob P commented on X (formerly Twitter) that the complexity of Enhanced Conversions setup often depends on a website’s architecture. This insight highlights the varied experiences marketers have had with this feature.
5. The Bigger Picture: Google's Accessibility Push
EC Assist is part of a broader trend we’re seeing from Google: making advanced advertising features more accessible to a wider range of users. This move reflects an understanding that powerful tools should be available to all marketers, not just those with extensive technical knowledge.
6. How to Get Started with EC Assist
Ready to give EC Assist a try? Here’s how to get started: Open the Chrome Web Store
Search for “EC Assist”
Click “Add to Chrome” to install the extension
Once installed, navigate to your website
Run a test conversion
Review EC Assist’s findings and recommendations
Conclusion
Google’s EC Assist represents a significant step forward in making Enhanced Conversions more accessible and easier to implement correctly. By simplifying this process, Google is empowering marketers to leverage advanced features and potentially improve their ad performance. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to Google Ads, EC Assist is a tool worth exploring to ensure you’re getting the most out of your Enhanced Conversions setup.
7. FAQs
Q1: Is EC Assist free to use?
A1: Yes, EC Assist is a free Chrome extension provided by Google.
Q2: Do I need to be a Google Ads expert to use EC Assist?
A2: No, EC Assist is designed to be user-friendly and helpful for marketers of all skill levels.
Q3: Will EC Assist work with any website?
A3: While EC Assist should work with most websites, its effectiveness may vary depending on your site’s architecture.
Q4: Can EC Assist guarantee perfect Enhanced Conversions setup?
A4: While EC Assist can significantly help, it’s always important to double-check your setup and consult with Google’s documentation if needed.
Q5: How often should I use EC Assist?
A5: It’s a good idea to use EC Assist whenever you make changes to your conversion tracking or if you notice any issues with your Enhanced Conversions data.
This article is based on a news release dated July 5, 2024, and includes interpretations and industry reactions. While efforts have been made to ensure accuracy, readers are encouraged to verify information and consult official Google documentation for the most up-to-date details on EC Assist and Enhanced Conversions.

10+ Excellent Web Design Tools & Resources to Use in 2024 - Web Design Ledger
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a New Year, but one thing hasn’t changed. The number of web design resources and tools just keeps on increasing. That’s a good thing. But it does make it that much more difficult to find a theme, plugin, or resource you really have a need for if you are to stay abreast of or leapfrog the competition.
We are in a position to make your search easier. Much easier in fact. We reviewed and tested web design tools & resources we believe many users, designers, and developers have a genuine need for. The types we believe to be essential, and that you will see in our final list of 15 are:
website builders for building landing pages and multiple-page websites quickly, easily, and without any need for coding.
WordPress plugins that can incorporate potentially game-changing functionalities, that are challenging to design, into websites.
WordPress themes for building complex and high-conversion rate websites and online stores.
Vector illustrations that can give a website a whimsical or entertaining aspect.
font identifiers to identify and provide access information to a “must have” font or fonts.
A majority of the web design resources and tools in the following list have a free or trial version:
What are a few of the important attributes these Excellent Web Design Tools & Resources for Designers and Agencies share?
They look premium. There is something about a top tool or resource that makes you wish you had acquired it a long time ago, e.g., how enjoyable it is to use.
They are intuitive. From signing up, to downloading, using, cancelling, and anything in between, everything needed is placed precisely where it should be.
They add real value. They facilitate getting more and higher paid assignments by helping you deliver web design projects faster, making your final deliverables more attractive, or both.
15 best web design Tools & Resources for Designers and Agencies
To help you in your research, we’ve included top features, customer average grade on non-biased platforms such as Trustpilot, Capterra or WordPress.org, and client feedback.
Ready? Then let’s get started.

7. WhatFontIs
The most powerful and  accurate free font identifier.
This tool’s top feature is its accuracy. WhatFontis users have a 90%+ chance of finding whatever free or licensed font they want identified.
No other system can claim that accuracy, and most of them charge a fee for whatever service they provide. It is worth noting that the ability of WhatFontis to identify a given font correctly can be compromised if the quality of the submitted image is subpar, and that is what accounts for some of the roughly 10% of missed identifications.
WhatFontis can do what it does best in part because of its database of 990K+ free and commercial fonts. This is nearly 5 times as many fonts as that attributed to the nearest competitor.
Whether the goal is to identify a specific font sent by a client, or simply because it is attractive, a customer wants to know what it is and where to find it. A search can be conducted for a font regardless of its publisher, producer, or foundry.
The process is as easy as can be.
Upload a clean font image.
In response, an AI-powered search engine identifies the font and as many as 60 close neighbors.
Links are provided that show where a free font can be downloaded or where a commercial font can be purchased.
Note: Cursive font letters must be separated before being submitted.
Client Feedback: “I came across this website courtesy Google search, used their services successfully; and today I find out it’s on product hunt! If you are ‘driven’ by the need to discover what font ‘that person/ company’ uses, then this should be your go-to solution site. For most of us it would be a once in a blue moon need, except for the professionals.”

Quote of the Week
My take on this is that you cannot use async Rust correctly and fluently without understanding Arc, Mutex, the mutability of variables/references, and how async and await syntax compiles in the end. Rust forces you to understand how and why things are the way they are. It gives you minimal abstraction to do things that could’ve been tedious to do yourself.
I got a chance to work on two projects that drastically forced me to understand how async/await works. The first one is to transform a library that is completely sync and only requires a sync trait to talk to the outside service. This all sounds fine, right? Well, this becomes a problem when we try to port it into browsers. The browser is single-threaded and cannot block the JavaScript runtime at all! It is arguably the most weird environment for Rust users. It is simply impossible to rewrite the whole library, as it has already been shipped to production on other platforms.
What we did instead was rewrite the network part using async syntax, but using our own generator. The idea is simple: the generator produces a future when called, and the produced future can be awaited. But! The produced future contains an arc pointer to the generator. That means we can feed the generator the value we are waiting for, then the caller who holds the reference to the generator can feed the result back to the function and resume it. For the browser, we use the native browser API to derive the network communications; for other platforms, we just use regular blocking network calls. The external interface remains unchanged for other platforms.
Honestly, I don’t think any other language out there could possibly do this. Maybe C or C++, but which will never have the same development speed and developer experience.
I believe people have already mentioned it, but the current asynchronous model of Rust is the most reasonable choice. It does create pain for developers, but on the other hand, there is no better asynchronous model for Embedded or WebAssembly.

The Future of Online Learning: How Parents Can Prepare for 2024
Online learning has become a necessity for many students and educators in the past few years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. According to a report by [Statista], the global e-learning market size was projected to reach $370 billion by 2026, up from $144 billion in 2019. Online learning offers many benefits, such as flexibility, accessibility, affordability, and personalization. However, it also poses some challenges, such as lack of social interaction, motivation, feedback, and support.
Tumblr media
As online learning becomes more prevalent and mainstream, parents need to be aware of the trends and developments that will shape the future of education in 2024 and beyond. Here are some of the key aspects that parents should consider and prepare for:
Explain Learning: A Platform for Online Discussion Groups
One of the most important factors for successful online learning is engagement. Students need to be actively involved in the learning process, not just passively consuming information. One of the best ways to foster engagement is through online discussion groups, where students can interact with their peers and instructors, share their ideas and opinions, ask and answer questions, and collaborate on projects.
However, not all online discussion groups are created equal. Some platforms may be too complex, too restrictive, or too distracting for effective learning. That’s why parents should look for a platform that is designed specifically for online discussion groups, such as [Explain Learning].
Explain Learning is a web-based platform that allows students to create and join online discussion groups on various topics and subjects. Explain Learning uses artificial intelligence to match students with the most relevant and suitable groups, based on their interests, preferences, and learning goals. Explain Learning also provides guidance and feedback to students and instructors, to help them improve their communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Explain Learning is ideal for online learning, because it enables students to:
Learn from diverse perspectives and experiences
Develop their curiosity and creativity
Enhance their confidence and self-expression
Build their social and emotional skills
Expand their network and connections
Parents can sign up for Explain Learning for free and explore the various features and benefits that it offers. They can also create their own online discussion groups for their children, or join existing ones that suit their needs and expectations.
Group Study: A Strategy for Online Learning Success
Another key factor for effective online learning is study habits. Students need to develop and maintain good study habits, such as setting goals, planning ahead, managing time, staying focused, reviewing materials, and testing themselves. However, studying online can be challenging, especially when students have to deal with distractions, isolation, procrastination, and stress.
One of the best ways to overcome these challenges is through group study, where students can study together with their peers, either online or offline. Group study can help students to:
Motivate and support each other
Clarify and reinforce concepts
Exchange and compare notes
Solve and explain problems
Practice and apply skills
Group study can also make online learning more fun and enjoyable, as students can socialize and bond with their friends, while learning new things and achieving their goals.
Parents can encourage and facilitate group study for their children, by providing them with the necessary tools and resources, such as:
A reliable internet connection and device
A comfortable and quiet study space
A suitable and convenient schedule
A clear and realistic agenda
A positive and respectful attitude
Parents can also monitor and evaluate their children’s group study sessions, by checking their progress, giving feedback, rewarding achievements, and addressing issues.
Conclusion
Online learning is here to stay, and it will continue to evolve and improve in the coming years. Parents need to be prepared and proactive, to help their children adapt and thrive in the online learning environment. By using Explain Learning, a platform for online discussion groups, and group study, a strategy for online learning success, parents can ensure that their children get the most out of their online education, and develop the skills and competencies that they need for the future.

The Vital Role of a Web Accessibility Consultant in Today’s Tech World
Tumblr media
As technology advances rapidly, the importance of inclusivity in digital experiences grows just as fast. At events like CES 2024—where innovation in AI, robotics, and smart technology was on full display—it became clear that accessibility still lacks the spotlight it deserves. Despite groundbreaking tech, accessible solutions were few, highlighting a critical gap.
This is where a Web Accessibility Consultant becomes essential.
Consultants like those at iBraille LLC work directly with organizations to ensure websites, apps, and digital tools are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. From audits and usability testing to compliance with ADA and WCAG standards, their expertise bridges the gap between innovation and inclusion.
At CES, even with limited accessibility-focused products, interest in universal design was rising. Accessibility consultants help channel that interest into action—ensuring that products and websites are usable by everyone from the start, not as an afterthought.
True digital progress happens when no one is left behind. Partnering with a web accessibility consultant isn’t just about compliance—it’s about creating meaningful, usable experiences for all. As technology continues to evolve, inclusive design must lead the way.

Drawing insights from O’Reilly Media’s latest report and a comprehensive survey involving over 2,800 technology professionals, it’s clear that employers are keenly searching for talent proficient in various aspects of generative AI.
The key skills in high demand
At the forefront of this demand are AI programming capabilities. Employers aren’t just looking for programmers; they’re seeking professionals who can delve into the nuances of large language models (LLMs), enhance data analysis, and refine AI-driven processes. But what does this mean for today’s tech professionals?
A.I. programming and data analysis: Mastery in programming and data interpretation remains crucial. But it’s not just about writing code; it’s about understanding and leveraging the data that fuels AI.
Security and testing expertise: As AI integrates deeper into our systems, the need for robust security and thorough testing escalates. Professionals who can navigate these complex requirements are increasingly valuable.
Strategic thinking and process re-engineering: The shift towards AI-driven solutions requires a rethinking of traditional methodologies. Professionals who can strategically guide this transition, especially in software engineering and product management, are in high demand.
Why these skills matter
Generative AI is transforming how we approach technology, from simple programming to complex system overhauls. But adapting to this change isn’t just about technical skills. It involves a paradigm shift in how we view software and its development. The AI model is now at the heart of applications, demanding continuous monitoring and a departure from conventional source control tools.
The reward: A competitive edge in the job market
