RIP, Roger Wood, genius assemblage sculptor
Tumblr media
Last week, my dear old friend Roger Wood died, very suddenly, of cancer. He was 80. Roger was a brilliant sculptor, a Canadian veteran navy gunner, and gay. He was my neighbour for a decade. I miss him already.
Roger and I both lived in an old WWI munitions factory in Toronto, which had been turned into 15 illegal live-work studios with 20-foot ceilings which leaked, massive south-facing windows (which leaked), and a warm and collegial vibe of weirdos and artists.
Roger was a self-taught sculptor, a mad collector of all sorts of junk: scrap metal, old toys, discarded electronics, decorative items. He tore these apart, painted and mutated them, and turned them into whimsical assemblages.
Many of these were built around clocks; often with a small feather attached to the second-hand that quivered as it revolved around and around the clockface. Roger was making things that could be called “steampunk” before the term existed — and once he learned it, he embraced it.
In those years, I was working very long hours on the early web, but I was often and easily sidetracked at Roger’s studio, where I’d sit and smoke cigarettes with him and hear navy stories (his time with the big guns had left him somewhat deaf) or just tour his beautiful new pieces.
Roger, too, had an incredible work ethic. He told the Toronto Star’s Barbara Turnbull, “Even on Sunday mornings, when good citizens are off to church, I’m off to the local flea market, always scrounging different bits and pieces.”
https://www.thestar.com/life/2007/10/13/timepieces_of_art.html
And he was content: “But I survive, so why complain? I think mere survival as an artist in Canada propels me into the top 10 per cent of the ranks in this country.”
Turnbull really captured Roger’s studio when she wrote: “But it’s the overwhelming number of storage containers, loosely labelled and filled with the items he uses for his fanciful designs that makes the jaw drop: picture lamp bulbs, lamp parts, wooden balls, drawer pulls, buttons, clock springs, gears and faces, dials, jewellery, candlesticks, shoemaker moulds, picture frames, musical instrument parts, vacuum tubes from old radios, gas lamp parts, typewriter keys, bottle caps, old gauges, camera lenses and nameplates.”
Roger loaned me dozens of his largest, most impressive pieces for my wedding, where he was resplendent in a hall that was filled with his sculptures. I was living in the UK at the time, and shortly after, high Toronto rents pushed Roger out of the city and to Hamilton. I saw him again a few years later when he came to an event of mine in Hamilton and we had dinner.
But then he moved back east, to Nova Scotia, where, he emailed me, he built the studio he’d always dreamt of. I didn’t see him after that, though we corresponded some. Mostly, I felt in touch with Roger because I’ve got so many of his sculptures in my home, including the diptych he gave us as a wedding gift.
Knowing Roger is gone has left an ache in my heart. He deserved to be so much better known, and better treated by the cities he graced with his art and his presence. He was a sweet, kind, talented, funny man and it showed in his art.
In Roger’s obituary in the Globe and Mail, his family says, “Donations to the Charity of Your Choice or support an artist, buy an original piece of art.” Support the artists in your life, folks, and cherish them. Goodbye, Roger. I was very lucky to count you a friend.
Here are some of my photos of Roger, his studio and his work:

By Matt Grobar
EXCLUSIVE: Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Timothy V. Murphy (Appaloosa) and Bruce Greenwood (The Fall of the House of Usher) have boarded The Fabulous Four, a new comedy from Bleecker Street, which has entered production in Georgia under an Interim Agreement from SAG-AFTRA.
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, and Megan Mullally, as previously announced. Ralph takes over the role of Sissy Spacek, who was attached as of last fall but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Bleecker Street nabbed North American rights to the pic last October and will release the film in U.S. theaters in 2024. UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and brokered the deal for U.S. rights, with Sierra/Affinity repping international sales.
Written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, the Cannes prize-winner best known for her Kate Winslet pic The Dressmaker, the film follows three life-long friends (Sarandon, Mullally, and Ralph) who travel to Key West, Florida to be bridesmaids in a surprise wedding of their college girlfriend Marilyn (Midler). Once there, sisterhoods are rekindled, the past rises up again in all its glory, and there are enough sparks, drinks and romance to change all their lives in ways they never expected.
Richard Barton Lewis’ Southpaw Entertainment is producing alongside Lauren Hantz of Hantz Motion Pictures.
An icon of stage and screen, Ralph has won an Emmy and numerous other accolades for her portrayal of kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary, the ABC mockumentary that has emerged as one the most popular scripted series on linear. The show, created by and starring Quinta Brunson, was renewed for a third season in January but only recently returned to the writers’ room, following the conclusion of the WGA strike. Otherwise perhaps best known for her Tony-nominated turn as Deena Jones in Broadway’s Dreamgirls, Ralph has also been seen in Mistress with Robert de Niro, To Sleep with Anger with Danny Glover, The Distinguished Gentlemen with Eddie Murphy, and Sister Act 2 with Whoopi Goldberg, along with such series as Moesha and Ray Donovan.
Most recently recurring on Law & Order: Organized Crime and ABC’s The Company You Keep, Murphy previously reprised his role in Uni’s comedy MacGruber on the same-name Peacock series. Other recent credits for the actor on the TV side include S.W.A.T., Snowpiercer, Westworld, and True Detective, to name just a few. Additional feature credits include In Full Bloom, The Lone Ranger, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
Greenwood puts in a stellar turn as Fortunato Pharmaceuticals CEO Roderick Usher in Netflix’s Edgar Allen Poe-inspired miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher from Mike Flanagan, which bowed on the platform earlier this month. He also recently starred in the Fox medical drama The Resident, which ran for six seasons, and will soon appear in fantasy pic The Invisibles with Tim Blake Nelson and Gretchen Mol, among other projects.
At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Bleecker Street nabbed U.S. rights to James Hawes’ One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins, and the starry British comedy Fackham Hall, which goes into production next year. The company also locked down UK rights, alongside Elysian Film Group and Anonymous Content, to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Upcoming releases include the Meg Ryan-helmed rom-com What Happens Later, coming to theaters November 3, which she leads with David Duchovny, and Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson’s Waitress: The Musical, out December 7 with Fathom Events.

Rupi's Poetry (Revisited)
[A Writer's Achievement]
Walking with purpose across her living room, lighting candles and turning the ceiling lights off
Sitting down with much to do, at peace with herself as reflected in her lovely brown eyes
The sound of trucks and cars on the 427 fades in the distant night time
She's changed, and everything is going to be all right
And it's Rupi, writing poetry in her room
Writing words of love and words that are true
Calmly looking closer with her eyes, a pleasurable delight she has found at the sight of her body
Outside in the Indian garden, the full moon is bright
More than 4 million women, children and men scroll across their phones, reading what Rupi wrote slowly
She walks back and forth with pen and paper held firmly in hand
...And it's Rupi thinking about poetry that she is going to write for you
She writes about pain and suffering and love
Most of what she writes about is true
Far from here
Only she rightfully decides, who she is to embrace in her arms
Feeling good again
For some
Most of the time
[She's A Twenty First Century Woman]
She gets emotional like the kind of scholar that she is who reads book after book like a charm
With eyes that are clear, there is much to digest
Knowing what you know can only take you higher
Putting you in all
She's here again
Here to perform
Putting you in all
Love and peace
Find yourself being released
She's an author, poet, illustrator, performer and artist
She's a twenty first century woman
There is much to what she writes
And all her followers
who have come from many different lifestyles and career paths
will have the time of their life
by buying a ticket and sitting down inside
Where more than a few
are seated
hand in hand
Mostly everyone's glad
She's a walking breathing miracle
She sells eternal sanctuary
She will entertain you
No matter what the temperature is outside
with Rupi inside
Everyone will feel warm
[Brampton And Malton And Toronto Heaven Sent]
We've got a feeling
there's a time to work
and a time to rest
Walking in our hometown fields
Fields that have seen generations of children
Children of the west
British descendants and the rest
Now a land of many brown skinned entrepreneurs
Standing still above ground
Safe and sound
Beating down any personal struggles
The day's chaos has begun, the workplace can be tense and ill at ease
Working hard to please...
And the chance to live in a wonderful world
without hectic commotion
Because love is where all of us need to be
and overtaken by that emotion
And even though everyone's in a good mood
Better to play it safe than sorry as usual
September has been a month to celebrate
And to have a slice of some delicious wedding cake
One of many lovely couple's have sealed their matrimonial fate
A time for celebration
and wedding hall dancing
here on earth before God
[Why Is She So Beautiful?]
Wandering through the forest
the conflicts of the world she has left
Climbing up a mountain of success
To a plateau of fresh, green grass
and tall trees full of life
Her young figure sits still
her reflection in the water she admires
that's natural
She's been published
and for that she's grateful
Salvador Dali's painting
"The Metamorphosis Of Narcissus" is beautiful
Such a brilliant painter
Narcissus blooms into a flower
Colourful and pleasing
Over and over
[Heydon's Farm]
If you go down to Heydon's Farm
You'll find a gathering of hovering Monarch butterflies
See forever eyes
that's not a surprise
Fox on the run
Over the road rocks by the jet
And there's the large lots
Memories of my mother there before
at the skating rink
where Michelle and her daughter are today
Just like everyone
Feeling both happy and sad
And of course there are good people in the world
Happy to be here
Championship drag racing
In a fast rush
Dealing with problems before the starting flag was raised
that had to be crushed
The moon and the prince
The prince was at the sticker factory
The sticker factory was beside the train tracks
The train tracks are still there amongst the enormous bustle
The bustle is what puts food on the table
and comfort all year round
Fly on a jet plane away
Sweet thing
Up on near the hikng trail
Places to go to and places you've been
You've changed into a fantastic human being
Yes
Happy as can be
And glorified as anyone can see
And fresh and clean in the morning
You've got everything
Always in
Never out
Wildwood wild things
throughout the summer blooming
in a roundabout
Changing seasons
Changes for one and all
Wish you were here
And some Hollywood stars are near
Time has come today
Time has come bringing change
Feel your body, it belongs to you and you alone
A gift from your mother and father
And from them you learn
what it is to work
during working hours
Earning your success
Making you feel tall
In my world
I hear a lot of lies
Up to here
listening to all these lies
Going with the flow
Rupi
In your world are there many that want you now?
And as you listen to your inner voice
To look for hidden doors, decorated floors and audience applause
Here for a good time
Everyone likes you a lot, they like what you've got
Your ancestral history can be felt and found throughout the land
Yes, deep in the land
And in the end, I heard before me, a clairvoyant having a spirit whisper in her head that in the end, we will find ourselves amongst those who all share similar interests
And that we'll all fit into our places
[Alpha Centauri Of The Constellation Centaurus]
With the stars of Centaurus shining bright around
A rocket ship moves slowly upward from its place underground
Rupi is strapped in, tilted back and coming up from beneath
Shimmering silver glitter around her head to below her knees
She lights up the fire in the skies
She knows she's doing well by the look in everybody's eyes
Her poetry is as rich as a sunrise
It ain't easy
Living in a painting and poetry fantasy
She is no longer alone
Made of hardy stock and thick to the bone
And the rocket engines roar
Roaring right down inside your soul
The stars of the constellation Centaurus shine alongside all of their moons
On stage, there's Rupi, reciting the words of a brand new poem
And it's Rupi, with her spoken words so true
At work and not lazy, thinking about the colour blue because it is such a fun thing to do
She's so far from here
Only she, and she alone rightfully decides who she is to receive in her loving arms
Rupi's back again, and everyone in the theatre will have a good time
[Poems]
Can't you feel your imagination get out of sight?
Pulsating colours, in the darkness of night
Like the galaxies that join after centuries, as the cycle of life expands and grows
She has come to your city and to a place that you call home
Rupi's standing shining in the sun, and she's reading with a loud voice
her favourite poems one by one
Poet of poets
Scholar of scholars
She has returned to read to the people, in theatre's close to their home
To make them feel glad that they've come, to listen to her reading her beautiful poems.

Some long-awaited Jasya for your dash :) First look into If Found, Please Burn (aka the sister story to the Wedding Planner au!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the lock on the door to the empty apartment clicked to unlock, Daya and Willow were welcomed with a duet of meows. Both girls were careful to sneak inside and not accidentally let the cats into the apartment building’s hallway.
“Why did I have to come with you here? I could have waited outside the building for you.” Daya pointed out as she removed her denim jacket and threw it over the couch. Jasmine has been out of town for barely a week and Daya has hardly had her vacation from the annoying blonde. Being forced to go to Jasmine’s apartment by Willow wasn’t really on her plans for the afternoon.
“Because I need you to keep the cats busy while I clean their litter, feed them, and give them fresh water,” Willow explained as she started to get to work in the kitchen. “Oh, and their treats. Jasmine wanted to make sure that they got their treats.” She picked up a Temptations box and shook it, getting Aveyah and Theo’s attention.
Daya plopped down on the couch, talking to Willow through the wall cut-out between the living room and kitchen. “What do you expect me to do with them? You know I’m not a cat person.” Just another reason that she and Jasmine never got along. Daya never understood how she and Jasmine even belonged in the same friend group, with how often the two argued and bickered.
Willow shrugged as she shooed the cats out of the kitchen and back into the living room. “Play with them, I guess. I think there’s a box of cat toys in her bedroom somewhere.”
Daya sighed dramatically “Fine, I’ll go keep them occupied.” She stood up off the couch and headed down the hall to Jasmine’s bedroom. Before she got too far, Willow’s voice pulled her attention back.
“Oh, and Daya?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t look through her stuff to use for blackmail.” Willow deadpanned, as she washed the food bowls in the sink.
“I wasn’t going to!” Daya exclaimed as she turned down to the hall and quickly found Jasmine’s bedroom.
She has never been in the bedroom before, but she could tell it was Jasmine’s. Pink wall decorations, stuffed animals all over the bed, and a tall cat tree in the corner. The room was perfect for Jasmine, and Daya felt instantly annoyed at the thought of Jasmine’s presence, even if Jasmine was over 450 miles away from her.
The last time she saw Jasmine was at Kerri’s family’s beach house in Malibu. Kerri invited the friend group for the weekend to spend at the beach house. Kerri said that her moms and younger sister wouldn’t be there that weekend, but Daya saw a motorcycle pull into the driveway outside the house in the morning.
All Daya remembered with Jasmine that weekend was a small thunderstorm started and she jokingly locked the blonde outside, and then Jasmine came back inside very pissed off and stayed in one of the bedrooms for the rest of the night.
A few days after the weekend passed, Kerri texted her and Bosco that Jasmine wasn’t going to board game night, since Jasmine would be in Toronto for the next three weeks.
Daya didn’t care why Jasmine chose to run off to Canada, she was just glad that she didn’t have to deal with her for three full weeks.
This was going to be the most stress-free three weeks of Daya’s life.
Or at least she assumed that was going to be the case.

Laetitia Sadier- Rooting For Love (Drag City)
The album begins with “Who + What,” an eerie, moody keyboard-driven melody that builds with layers and layers of instruments and vocals. “I need to I want to I have to; Need to expand, want to expand; Embrace my Goddess; Escape the fortress; The walls are falling down, cultures are communing; Muses are converging; On the verge.” Track 2, ”Proteiformunite,” is the first of many French songs on this album. This time the bass gets the spotlight. Laetitia’s soft vocals take the listener away to another world. And then the band kicks in with a full-out jam! Next up, “Une Autre Attente," is another French track. Eerie keyboards and robotic piano are highlighted here, but the beautiful vocals truly add to this one. Check out the video:
youtube
Track 4, “The Dash,” is a soft, gentle, jazzy number complete with “Ba dee dup, Ba dee dup” Bossa Nova vocals. “Through the center; The discreet shine of your darkness; Eyes of children the heart of another; Things we fear are false; A current life; The place inside; Into the night slowly; Swells vitality.” Next, “Don’t Forget You’re Mine” has a stripped-down beginning, but eventually the music soars and swells with beats and strings. “Hey, don't scream with rage it’s vain. I’m not impressed, just exasperated again. A good slap is what you need; a good slap is what you want; take that take that, get up get up babe.” Track 6, “Panser L’inacceptable,” is another beauty of a song. It has a tropical feel to it. Love the horns here. Here’s the video:
youtube
Track 7, “The Inner Smile,” is possibly my favorite track with shifting flutes and a major jam near the end. It’s the most upbeat song on the album. “Smile at all parts of your being. Smile at the parts you’re aware of and those you’re not. Smile, smile and thank your whole body.” Next up, “La Nageuse Nue,” is a French-titled song with English lyrics this time. Laetitia gets deep with her poetry. “The dissolution beliefs; The singular world; Volunteers the ego. Social body, For a cleansing and healing, Experience. Which may turn the personality inside and out; Discloses the gold hidden within the heart.” Track 9,“ New Moon,” develops into a hypnotic blast of ambient sound. It actually came out way back in 2021. It’s one of those songs you just don’t want to end. A beautiful video directed by Laetitia and Tanya Small captures the song here:
youtube
The album closes with “Cloud 6,” a repetitive outer space choral vocal exercise complete with blasting horns. “You have a power I haven't got. I have a power you don’t have. We need all the power we can get. Our psyches, well-being, brutalised, The world renounces its liberty because it is in fear. Because it is in fear, because it is in fear.” More deep thoughts from Laetitia as we would expect. Another great one from Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier from start to finish.  Make sure to check the tour schedule beginning in March to see if she’ll be hitting your part of the world. ERIC EGGLESON
