Ok i dont often like superhero aus but svsss au where sj is the philandering womanising supervillain xiu ya and yqy is the superhero xuan su where they have some really weird tension-extended-eye-contact kind of thing going on !!!

One day sj is ready to start a diamond heist. He's prepared for this day so well, escape routes, bribes, equipment - he's planned for everything, he's even got an outfit specially for this one with shimmery gemstones to match the shiny diamonds that will be soon joining his collection (he sells them on the black market to fund orphanages under an alias but no one knows). He's even planned for yqy inevitably crashing his party as he always does.

But yqy never shows up. SJ ends up at home sitting on his ratty couch and ranting to Wei Ying who's his roommate/closest friend/fellow villain chewing on his perfectly manicured nails. Why wouldn't Yue Qi show up? He thought what they had was special? Then, the thought hit him.

He's found someone else. A new arch nemesis.

Fury rushes through his veins. How could he??? SJ is narrating this out to WY, who's giggling as SJ paces around their flat, muttering and scowling. He even rubs salt into already bleeding wounds, going on and on about how his Lan Zhan would never, etc etc.

The next time he commits another crime, Yqy shows up. Finally. Their conversation goes something like this

SJ: Tell me the truth. You've changed. You've found someone else, haven't you. YQY (confused): You said you were fine with me fighting other people SJ: You're running around behind my back looking for other people to fight. I knew it. You can't even be an arch nemesis right? I can't believe you.

Not much crime gets done but not much superhero work does either.

Their interaction gets filmed and put on twitter. Chaos ensues.

I need a fic where the war never happened because I like to imagine that when wangxian starts dating (but only jc, yanli and lxc knows and the rest of the cultivation world think they hate esch other), wwx jokes that if lwj wants to marry him he has to ask first to jiang fengmian and madam yu.

But lwj, bless his heart, actually does it. Also this is the time when yanli and jzx broke their engagement so when people start to talk about the lan clan going to yunmeng with the intention to marry a jiang, everyone thinks that it's yanli and jzx starts to panic.

So, lwj gets to yunmeng, madam yu is looking at him like she's about to kill him if he does something wrong, jfm is at his wife's side but we all know she's the one who takes the decisions.

Madam yu: so, you want my daughter's hand in marriage. Well, you're not jzx, but the second jade of lan is not...

Lwj: sorry, but I'm here to ask for Wei Ying's hand.

Wwx can't take it anymore and starts laughing.

Wwx: LAN ZHAN! I wasn't being serious!! I can't believe you actually did it!!!

Jfm and madam yu are confused, yanli feels sorry for them but at the same time this is too funny, and jc wants to die.

Because holy shit??? What do you mean that lwj, the amazing lwj, wants to marry wwx????? Madam yu and jfm are in shock. They obviously accept but they're like. So confused. Didn't they hate each other???

It gets worse, because a few days later jzx arrives to yunmeng and suddenly yells: "PLEASE LET ME MARRY YOUR DAUGHTER I REALLY LOVE HER PLEASE DON'T MARRY LAN WANGJI" or something like that.

It's pathetic. Jzx is there with only jgy and its obvious that he spent the last days flying as fast as he could to yunmeng, because he looks like shit.

But yanli finds it adorable, and jgy convinces madam yu to accept jzx terrible proposal.

And... wait, was Lan Zhan… putting his hand on the guy’s ass?! No. Su She does not accept this.

The way this author made the story of the Scarlet Pumpenel fit in mdzs is, in my opinion, masterful. The arranged marriage is built on devastating misunderstanding after devastating misunderstanding, but the identity shenanigans are so fun! Other highlights include Jiang sect love and wangxian adopting not only A-Yuan but MXY as well. So much fun and an epic adventure! @gentil-minou

AU where teen Wei Wuxian, either while just exploring or while skipping class, runs into this woman at a garden or park or out shopping and sees she's looking a little sad. So he goes over and talks to her for a bit, he finds she's actually pretty nice and fun to talk to, he runs into her again and again until he starts to intentionally meet up with her and spend time just doing silly things, like going shopping, checking out restaurants and cafes, sharing complaints about things, sharing recommendations/thoughts.

And it's going really well, she is like a mother or older sister to him. He really enjoys his time with her just as she enjoys spending time with him.

And then he finds out she's his classmate Lan Zhan's mother.

Lan Zhan, who is suspicious about this A-Ying his mother sometimes talks about when he visits. Lan Zhan, who admitted to his mother he has a crush on one of his classmates named Wei Ying. Lan Zhan, who Wei Wuxian has also admitted to her about having a crush on.

He is absolutely mortified because he has been complaining (gushing) about Lan Zhan to his own mother for WEEKS.

Lan Zhan's mother finds it hilarious and slightly puzzling, she thought Wei Wuxian already knew she was Lan Zhan's mother. They do look exceptionally alike and Wei Wuxian had even pointed that out at one moment in time.

Or maybe she did know he was unaware and was enjoying hearing about her son from someone who obviously loved him and was unabashedly talking about him to a supposed stranger.

Anyway, cue hijinks, jealous Lan Zhan who doesn't know it's his crush hanging out with his mom and not some random teen trying to steal her from him, Wei Wuxian and Madam Lan Bonding, Lan Xichen watching everything with an amused, albeit slightly confused, smile, and WangXian getting together after a really hilarious reveal.

Maybe Madam Lan takes Wei Wuxian home for whatever reason and Lan Zhan just so happens to visit, maybe Lan Zhan and his mother are shopping together and Wei Wuxian runs into them, Maybe one of them mentions something while hanging out and makes the connection.

Could be Modern or Canon.

I just really enjoy the idea of Wei Wuxian accidentally becoming close with his future mother-in-law without knowing.

Lan Wangji hanging out during a Ying family domestic and I am confused and have thoughts.

1) this is clearly after the 'I'm not going back to Gusu' with you scene, so clearly they made up.

2) there is literally no context to Lan Wangji being there... he's the sole member of his clan in this scene. Just hunting with his boyfriend I guess.

3) Lan Wangji saying 'Wei Ying' when Wei Wuxian is getting rowdy is my new favourite thing.

4) Back to Gusu for a minute, does that mean there is a section in the novel where Wangxian are just hanging out for a bit, going on hunting trips and getting drunk before Wei Wuxian dies?

5) Really, though, why is he there? Is this how donghuas work - you know they're in love because they will randomly become background characters for each other.

Like Wei Wuxian I have become distracted by the sight of Lan Wangji. And this is why I need to read the book.

I just had a thought. imagine WWX and LWJ transmigrating into an alternate reality (which is pretty much the same, but events changed there do not affect events in their world) as their 15-year-old selves; and for half a day, they both think it's an individual thing; and then Wei Wuxian sees Lan Zhan, and can't control his words, "Oh my god, Lan Zhan so cute!!" and Lan Wangji is like "Wei Ying (fond) is adorable too."

and they both sorta have that look and realize they both transmigrated; and it's so funny because by the rules of the array (or whatever), they can't tell anyone where they are from, or about the future (like they can only personally act differently and suggest actions to other people, knowing very well they hold little power to cause systemic changes, just two nails in a machine, but well, what are they if not always trying).

and this time, Wei Wuxian doesn't punch Jin Zixuan "but Lan Zhan... I really wanted to," But he does say a grand choice of crass words that get him punishment with Lan Wangji again, who's forcibly out of his seclusion and in classes.

And in classes, Lan Wangji sits in front, ever the dutiful while Wei Wuxian sits behind him; sleeping, talking, flirting, writing notes; and Lan Wangji doesn't reprimand him as much; and when Jiang Cheng says rude shit to him, the Second Young Master Lan glares at him and everyone is so confused.

and they have punishment together in the library and it's just... Wei Wuxian courting Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji courting him back.

Hello, I have started posting a new fic. For once, I'm really really happy with something I've written AND it's a complete, very long story, a thing that hasn't happened since 2019!

I liked it so much I even wrote a real summary! If you know me at all means I was TRULY invested; I haven't felt so happy about a fic since Away Childish Things!!! Here's the stuff:

When Lan Qiren extends an invitation to lunch, Wei Ying is admittedly very suspicious. Lan Qiren’s never made any effort to hide his dislike for his youngest nephew's partner of choice. The last time they came face to face, he’d not just ignored Wei Ying, but openly spoken about setting Lan Zhan up with a family friend. So a sudden change of heart seems highly unlikely.

“You do not have to accept the invite. He hasn’t given you any reason to want to see him,” Lan Zhan says when Wei Ying tells him about the strangely amicable text messages he’s received from his uncle.

But he sees the glimmer of hope in Lan Zhan’s eyes. He knows how much it hurts him to see his family at odds with Wei Ying. He didn’t even get to celebrate the new year with them this year because he refused to go if Wei Ying was not invited, despite Wei Ying repeatedly telling him it was okay.

So the least Wei Ying can do is try his best to fix things for Lan Zhan’s sake. Especially if Lan Qiren is extending an olive branch.

He spends an embarrassing amount of time getting ready, not wanting to give Lan Qiren more reason to dislike him. He irons his clothes, takes out his piercings, removes his nail varnish and ties his hair up as neat as he can manage. It’s a good thing Lan Zhan has already left for work, or he’d look at Wei Ying sadly and tell him not to change himself for anyone.

The restaurant Lan Qiren has picked is fancy to say the least. Wei Ying feels astoundingly out of place, but manages to walk in with his head held high. He’s arrived exactly on time but Lan Qiren is already seated at the table.

Wei Ying greets him and takes a seat. He thinks he sees Lan Qiren nod ever so slightly in response. It’s one step above being completely ignored like last time, so they’re off to a good start he tells himself.

The restaurant is not very busy at this time. Only faint music and the clinking of cutlery can be heard. The silence stretches between them. Wei Ying clears his throat. “How have you been, Uncle?” Lan Qiren’s eye twitches. “We haven’t seen each other for a while.”

“With reason.” Lan Qiren doesn’t look at him as he speaks, instead glancing around the restaurant like he’s observing the decor.

Wei Ying tries not to falter. “Thank you for inviting me to lunch, Uncle. I wasn’t expecting it at all, but I’m glad you did.”

“Yes, I suppose it’s not every day someone like you gets to dine at an establishment like this.”

“I’ve come here before, without Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying’s face is beginning to ache with the smile he keeps plastered on. “You forget I grew up with the Jiangs.”

“Grew up with, yes.” Lan Qiren finally looks at him. “But you are not one of them.”

“What upsets me is his inability to discern good from bad. He continues to disappoint me.” Lan Qiren rudely waves away the waiter that approaches their table. “He can’t see that his family has his best interests in mind, not duplicitous outsiders.”

“Did you invite me here to insult me, Uncle?” Wei Ying laughs. “You could have done that over the phone. It would’ve saved you the trip. I know your knees have been giving you trouble recently.”

Lan Qiren scowls. “I called you here to make you an offer.”

“An offer?”

“Ah, that’s piqued your interest, has it?” Lan Qiren strokes his goatee smugly. “As expected.”

Wei Ying is so confused. “I really don’t understand what you’re saying, Uncle.”

“I am not your uncle,” Lan Qiren erupts. “Drop the act, Lan Zhan is not here to see.” He pulls out a pen and paper from his pocket and scribbles something down. “Here.” He slides the paper across the table. “Now leave my nephew.”

Bewildered, Wei Ying looks down at the paper. And then he sees what it really is — a cheque, in Wei Ying’s name. “Huh?”

“Take this money and leave my nephew,” Lan Qiren says calmly.

“What?!”

“Stop playing dumb. This is what you’re really after, right? So take it!” He roughly pushes the cheque the rest of the way. “It’s more than you could ever dream of. Take it and get out of my nephew’s life!”

Perhaps for the first time in his life, Wei Ying is at a complete loss for words. He feels like he’s been teleported into one of those horrible soap operas Madam Yu likes to watch, and Lan Qiren is the evil, scheming mother-in-law.

“No fucking way,” he blurts.

Lan Qiren goes purple with rage. “You insolent—!” But he’s interrupted by his phone ringing.

It looks like the call is important. “Wait here,” he instructs Wei Ying, still looking furious, and then walks off with his phone to his ear. But not before pocketing the cheque first.

Wei Ying can’t believe this is happening. He scrambles to get his own phone out and quickly calls Lan Zhan, keeping an eye out for Lan Qiren.

Despite being at work, Lan Zhan picks up on the second ring. “Wei Ying?”

“Lan Zhan, you’ll never fucking believe this!” he whisper-screams down the phone.

“Is everything okay?” Lan Zhan sounds worried. “Has Uncle done something?”

“No, no. Good news,” Wei Ying reassures him. “He hasn’t tried to run me over or anything this time.”

“This time?” Ah shit. Wei Ying wasn’t supposed to mention that incident to Lan Zhan. “And what is the bad news?”

“Well…” He grimaces even though Lan Zhan can’t see him. “He’s just offered me money to leave you.”

“What?” The disbelief in Lan Zhan’s voice is loud and clear.

“Exactly! It’s like something out of a cheesy K-drama!” In fact Wei Ying’s pretty sure he’s seen this exact scene in a show before. Only difference is Lan Qiren isn’t wearing fur and pearls and a fancy updo. “I don’t know whether to laugh or be angry. Your uncle’s gone insane!”

There’s a long moment of silence on the other end of the line. And then Lan Zhan asks, “How much did he offer?”

“Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying guffaws. “That’s your main concern? How much? I don’t know, a completely crazy amount. There were so many zeroes on the cheque I lost count.”

“You should take the money.”

“What.” Wei Ying’s heart plummets. Surely not…

“Take the money and stay with me regardless,” Lan Zhan tells him. “He won’t be able to do anything about it.”

“Lan Zhan!” Relief washes over Wei Ying. “Are you telling me to scam your own uncle?”

“Mn. Why not.”

“I love you,” Wei Ying laughs. “I love you so much, Lan Zhan. I hope you know that.” Then he spots Lan Qiren heading back over. “Okay, I have to go now. Talk to you later. Love you, muah!” He blows a kiss through the phone and then rushes to put it away before Lan Qiren sees.

The man takes his seat at the table once again. “You're still here. Well, of course you are.” He takes the cheque out of his pocket and puts it back onto the table, looking smug. “You wouldn’t leave without this.”

Wei Ying looks down at the cheque, unable to withhold his disdain. “This is all you think your beloved nephew is worth?”

Lan Qiren scoffs. “So you want more? I should have known. Name your price. Whatever it takes to be rid of you for good.”

“I will not leave Lan Zhan. Ever.�� Wei Ying emphasises each individual word. “I love him.”

“Name your price, boy,” Lan Qiren repeats, getting angrier. “He won’t miss you. I’ll have a hundred eligible young men lined up for him by the end of the week. Men of his calibre, not money hungry vermin like you.”

“Money hungry,” Wei Ying laughs. “But I don’t want your money, Uncle. Not even if you double it, or triple it, or give me everything you own. All I want is Lan Zhan. All I’ve ever wanted is Lan Zhan.”

“And you really expect me to believe that him being the heir to Lan Enterprise has nothing to do with it?” Lan Qiren sneers.

“Nothing at all.” Wei Ying shrugs. “I’ve loved him since we were children. I loved him when he didn’t have a penny to his name after you cut him off for being gay. And I’ll love him till my dying breath, and in every lifetime thereafter.”

“Oh, cut the nonsense!” Lan Qiren’s fists are clenched into the tablecloth. “Do you know how easy it’ll be for me to ruin your life? To destroy everything you care about? I will make your life a living hell!” He bangs his fists against the table, making the plates rattle and the water in his glass splash over. “So if you have an ounce of sense you’ll take the money now and leave peacefully. This is your last chance.”

Wei Ying considers the man carefully. Then he picks up the cheque. He reads it properly this time and realises the figure is even bigger than he’d originally thought. More money than he’ll ever see in his lifetime.

“I think,” he says, and smiles up at Lan Qiren, “You should stuff your cheque, Uncle,” and rips it up into small pieces, throwing them up in the air.

As he walks out of the restaurant he hears the sound of cutlery hitting the ground. The ever composed Lan Qiren publicly losing his cool like this. How embarrassing, Wei Ying thinks, giggling to himself. Lan Zhan is going to be so amused when he hears about it.

finished the untamed and yeah... i loved that oh my god. though its unfortunate that some of my favorite novel scenes and much of the romance aspect had to be removed, i think even without it, the care/bond wangxian have was well portrayed and the story was followed pretty nicely? i highly recommend reading the novel first though- or else you'll be a little confused

xiao zhan and wang yibo make an excellent wei wuxian and lan wangji... their personalities really came through. im so enamored with xz's performance as wei ying- his cutesy mannerisms, his tears, his anger, and his pain were all so well expressed

the ending... i heard the special edition ending is better so im excited for that (at least my heart rests easy knowing the true canon novel ending exists hah)

but i will say the live action a-yuan "reveal" is the best of all the adaptations imo! i found myself tearing up- such a soft "father-son" moment

eventually i will listen to the audio drama which i am SO excited for!

10. Hello I was suggested to seek help here to find fics that I have been trying to find for a really really long time. I hope you could help me with them.

A. The fic was set post canon where Lan Wangji seemed to have lost his memory of WWX and Wei Wuxian tries to help him get his memory back. This seems to be a common premise but what resonated me about the fic was that there was a use of a song to cure the memory loss and the song required lots of energy and thus Wei Wuxian had decided to play the song in parts and Wangxian navigate around eachother as LWJ slowly gets his memory back in snippets.

B. This one is set in post canon as well but this focuses much more on the relationship of Wei Wuxian with Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling. In this fic it seems that Wei Wuxian tends to favour Lan Sizhui above anyone else and thus Jin Ling gets jealous at this prospect. I don't remember many finer details of the story besides these.

15. Thank you all for this glorious blog. I have a fic finder request. For a solid 3 months I have been trying to find it but alas. It's wangxian, f/f, on ao3. I think it's arranged marriage. Wangxian are married in any case but lwj isn't interested in anything but sex while wwx is very much in love with lwj. At some point, just as wwx starts thinking lwj might be softening toward her, she finds out that lwj is to have a concubine, Mianmian who lwj is old friends with. So wwx starts pulling away to give lwj opportunity to be with MM and is just very miserable.

I don't know for sure if wwx goes for a visit to Lotus Pier and that's where it happens or if she's holing up somewhere in Cloud Recesses, but Lwj goes to her and apologizes and they talk it through and there is a happy ending.

I BELIEVE it's 3 chapters but it could be 5. Anyway it's SO GOOD and I'm aching to reread it. @trulywicked

20. Hi! Can you help me find a fic? It's a (sort of) time travel fix-it where the Lans (LWJ and LQR are the ones i remember the most) are nice to WWX and it confuses him a lot. 1. Keep Me (MDZS, wlw Wangxian, E)

My pride and joy, tbh. My first ever Wangxian, my first ever NaNo win, something I never thought I could accomplish. It falls into one of my favorite tropes in this fandom which is straight boy/girl/whatever wei ying, which is just always such a joy. I really poured myself into his and I feel like I'll never be able to top this one. But also, Lan-er-jiejie made me lose my mind and write 50k of [confused horny noises] so.

2. Like a Knife to the Heart (MDZS, Wangxian, E)

Plot? I don't know her, normally. But I tried my hand at such a thing for last year's Bottomji Big Bang and it was such a fun experience. It was also unexpectedly fun to really lean into the unapologetic romance of historical settings for once and then mix my Wuxia love into it.

3. you bring it out of me (MDZS, wlw Wangxian, E)

Somehow, every Wangxian fic I write is some kind of new experiment for me. This one, written for a Subji event, had me writing the probably niche-iest thing I've ever written, wlw subji with jealousy and exes to lovers and a flavor of bdsm I wouldn't even know how to categorize?? But this was really peak freedom, peak "I do what I want!" to write and I'm so happy with how it turned out.

4. trostlos (SNK, JeanMarco, T)

I wrote this for one of the many JeanMarco Gift Exchanges I was a part of and I think it's my favorite bit of worldbuilding I've done. It's not a very long fic and by now I wonder how I managed to squeeze so much post-apocalypitic angst into 8k, but it's a powerful one, I think. I'm still really proud of it.

5. Only You Build Me, Only You Break Me (VLD, Shallura, E)

I may no longer fuck with this show or fandom, but I do still love some of the nsfw propmt fills I did here, especially the Superhero AU and the Sailor Moon AU. Just looking at it now makes me want to do something similar again for more current obsessions.

Lan Wangji has been watching over Wei Ying's sleeping form for six hours now. He is exhausted, both with the aftermath of the night hunt he and his husband have just finished, as well as with having passed his usual bedtime with over three hours.

He has been checking Wei Ying's temperature and sending him spiritual energy every 15 minutes, playing him calming songs every hour. But Wei Ying has been unconscious and unresponsive all throughout it, ever since the rogue cultivators they found as culprits behind several crimes had casted something that had Wei Ying scream in pain and faint.

Lan Wangji killed them in cold blood for that - after they kept refusing to tell him what they'd done and how to fix ir. Inquiry later revealed they used a curse they'd never casted before and so they knew nothing of its effects save for the fact that it was incurable.

As the seventh hour ticked by, Wei Ying finally stirred, his face scrunching in pain as he opened his eyes. Lan Zhan has been holding his hand for a while, and couldn't help leaving a kiss on the soft knuckles. "Wei Ying."

But when Wei Ying's eyes turned to meet his, there was not the love and mischief that Lan Wangji has grown to be so fond of. Instead, there was shock, followed by fear, as Wei Ying pulled his hand away harshly and scrambled to the furthest side of the bed.

"Where have you taken me?! What is this place?!"

Lan Wangji looks at him, at first confused, then downright terrified as realization begins dawning on him.

"Wei Ying, you're not making sense, we're back at the inn-"

He's speaking quickly, in a raised tone, panicked to the extent that it seems to have summoned resentful energy to guard him. "Inn?! What inn?! How long have I been unconscious?! What have you done to me?!"

Lan Wangji wants to reach out to him, he's so scared and Lan Wangji just wants to comfort him. "Wei Ying-"

His eyes dart around the room. "My-my flute, where is Chenqing- and the amulet-"

Lan Wangji is cannot stop shaking as he hands Wei Ying the flute. This cannot be real. This has to be an illusion, a trick of the mind, a curse.

"And the-"

"The stygian tiger amulet has been destroyed." Lan Wangji explains, straining his voice so it comes out level and he doesn't scare Wei Ying any further.

"What?! How?!"

"You destroyed it..." a deep breath, "13 years ago."

Wei Ying pales. "13...13 years ago? All this time... have... have I just been here?"

Lan Wangji tries to hide a pained look, swallows a hard lump in his throat. "Wei Ying, you... died."

"I...I died?" He doesn't seem too troubled at that, not until his brain catches up to him, and his voice comes out strained with the realization, "Then it means that everyone else... died with me."

Lan Wangji's vision is starting to become blurry, so he closes his eyes as he speaks. "A-Yuan is the only survivor, I found him in the Burial Mounds when I came to look for you - for your body. He is a Lan disciple now. Lan Sizhui."

Several minutes of silence pass. Lan Wangji stays motionless and doesn't open his eyes. He knows he will cry if he does.

"Why..." Wei Ying begins, again, unsure, scared still, "why am I here then? How?"

"You were summoned through a soul sacrificing ritual in the body of a young man, Mo Xuanyu..."

The resentful energy conjured in the room subsides. Wei Ying has calmed down somewhat, and he has finally put Chenqing down. "You...you look like you want to cry, Lan Zhan. I'm sorry, I just... don't remember anything..."

Lan Wangji finally opens his eyes, and lets himself look at Wei Ying. His Wei Ying that doesn't know is his. "You cannot even remember that we...that we are marrried?"

Disbelief, shock and then a flush pass through Wei Ying's expressuon. "Oh. That's - wow. That's unexpected. I never really gave much thought to- I guess I never did get around much exploring either..." he looks down, "... are-are we... in love?"

Lan Wangji can barely speak. "Yes, we are."

"How-how about your sect? Surely your uncle-"

Lan Wangji has to look away again, and his eyes catch onto the red ribbon he's untied from Wei Ying's hair while he was asleep. "Uncle has no business interfering. Neither does anyone else. I never allowed anyone to."

"Where do we... live?"

"In the Cloud Recesses." He hears Wei Ying take a sharp breath at that, and continues. "You like teaching the juniors. They admire you immensely. Everybody else does not bother you, and I have made sure you are being treated with the respect you deserve."

Wei Ying seems unsure of what to say and he's busying himself with braiding Chenqing's tassel as he takes the new information in. He feels like he knows all of this, yet it's all news to him. He feels like he loves Lan Zhan but he's not sure how. He feels like himself but also like a stranger on whose life he's intruded and taken over.

"Am I..." he begins, and takes a few seconds to find the right word, "...happy?"

Lan Wangji feels the question stab through him like an arrow, the hopeful yet hopeless tone of it. "What?"

"In this life that you're telling me about, this life I can't remember... am I happy?"

"You always tell me that you are. You look happy, you act happy..." he can't keep his tears in any longer. "I... hope you are."

He hears Wei Ying sniffle quietly. "You've changed, Lan Zhan." And Wei Ying moves close enough to touch the hand he's so harshly pushed away moments before. "You really are someone I'd fall in love with."

“I cannot believe how irresponsible you are!” Lan Qiren roared. “You left a child all on his own!”

“Uh,” Cangse Sanren said, looking frantic. “Qiren-gege, you can’t be here –”

“It would be bad enough if he were ten, but he’s not even that! He’s barely more than a toddler! Do you know the sort of trouble he could get into by himself?!”

“Lan-er-gongzi – ah, that is, Sect Leader Lan –” Wei Changze tried to speak, but Lan Qiren was having none of it and silenced him at once.

“And not even by himself,” he continued. “Think of the risk of him getting caught up by some – some human trafficker or slaver! Or even some evil creature – you do know that the children of cultivators are the most likely to be targeted by such things, right?! It was taught in the classes! You were there! I saw you, I was there as well!”

“Damnit, Qiren, now is not the time –”

“It most certainly is! How can you possibly think there is reason for delay in such an important matter –”

“Qiren, behind you!”

Lan Qiren turned, still fuming, and saw the gigantic yao barreling down at him. He was so angry that, for once, he didn’t overthink any of his actions, merely pulled out his guqin in a single motion and threw the most aggressive cleansing song he knew right into the thing’s face, dispersing a significant portion of the resentful energy it had accumulated. Then, when some part of it still tried to continue its charge, he forwent his sword entirely (more accurately: he forgot he had one) and simply beat the stupid thing to death with his guqin directly, as if with a hammer.

“…huh,” Cangse Sanren said blankly when he was done. “I. I mean. Well. That’s certainly one way to get around the ‘cannot be pierced by swords’ problem. Really should’ve thought of that myself, actually.”

“The what problem?” Lan Qiren said, still panting a little from his exertion. As he calmed down, he began to feel minorly guilty for having taken out his frustrations on the yao, imagining in its place the face of all the horribly irresponsible parents he’d seen over the years, and most specifically the ones who were currently urging him to neglect his traumatized nephews still suffering from their mother’s death in favor of sect business important only to themselves – it occurred to him belatedly that he might have gone a little overboard. Certainly the poor guqin deserved better; it was going to need to be replaced entirely. Luckily he’d just grabbed a random one from the training rooms in his haste…

“That was the creature that was going to be my doom,” Cangse Sanren said helpfully, as if she thought she was clarifying something rather than being more confusing. “You just killed it.”

Lan Qiren stared blankly at her.

“Never mind,” she said soothingly. “I’ll explain later. You’ve clearly had a very hard time of it recently. Would you like a cup of tea and some time to talk about it?”

“…yes, thank you.” Lan Qiren sheepishly lifted the silencing spell on Wei Changze. “But first we go back to collect your son.”

“Naturally! If it hadn’t been for that doom, I’d never have left him, you know that. Now come on, let’s go – Changze can collect the shards of wood, don’t worry about that – look at what you’ve done to your poor hands, Qiren! They’re full of splinters. We should go wash them out immediately…”
