At some point you stop collecting tools to make things, and you start collecting tools to make tools. This sickness has struck so many of my friends, and it comes for me now also.
In antiquity, many of our most famous innovators had to build their own tools in order to discover whatever it was they became famous for. Charles Babbage had to invent the interchangeable machine screw, because up until then everyone just made their own crazy types of screw. For this, he was marked for death by at least one machinist, but his sacrifice was all worth it for the ability to pop on down to Home Depot and buy some complete dogshit drywall screws to use to cobble your bumper back on. Is he remembered for this? Not unless you do it.
Nowadays, every kind of tool that can ever be made has been made. Unfortunately, corporate and governmental greedheads don't want to let us have those tools. They ask invasive questions like, "are you really certified to operate a 10kW pulsed cutting laser?" and "do you have a hundred thousand dollars?" We have to make them instead. Of course, I'm not the kind of guy who builds his own CNC machine. No, I have to cobble together something useful from my own raccoon-like hoard of total garbage.
Most of the time, I can toil away in complete anonymity. This time, I regret to inform you, I have really fucked up. When I broke my ratchet at the junkyard last time (by using it as a hammer,) I still needed to make a hammer. I ended up using some of their batteries to stick-weld it to a broken chunk of frame rail, which really stepped up the ol' potency and also made it look like a horrifying movie prop.
Unfortunately the resulting vibe really stuck with a visiting Hollywood producer, who was touring the yard to look for filming locations (and probably a blower motor for his Bentley, judging from the racket it was making.) You can see my cool new Seat Safety Sledge in the latest Disney superhero movie. Getting a job at Disneyland is pretty cool, but they keep telling me that the robots can't cuss. Look, folks, what do you want me to do with this pile of Profane Speak 'n' Spell? Put it back in the dumpster where I found it?

1962 Mainframe with Bluetooth
This old computer is comprised of four big boxes, three of which are ever actually used.
The UNIVAC 1219. This is the brains of the system. It controls the operations of every other device. This is what I'm referring to when I'm not gesturing to the UNIVAC 1219 as a whole.
The UNIVAC 1540. This is the DDR, or Digital Data Recorder. It holds, writes, and reads the magnetic tape operators load into the machine.
The Digital to Analog Converter. The UNIVAC 1219 was the first digital computer on most U.S. Navy ships, most of which had analog weapons systems. This hulking mass of steel translated the digital signals from the computer to the analog signals of the weapon systems and vice versa in regards to the radar.
The UNIVAC 1532. The I/O console managed the...you guessed it, input and output of the UNIVAC 1219. You can load and punch paper tape for programs more bite-sized than would be used for magnetic tape.
In addition, we have two teletype machines. You can think of them like typewriters that don't receive human input (except the one that can if we want), but instead output what the computer tells it to. Ā We have a Teletype Corporation teletype that is optimized for character compatability and a Kleinschmidt teletype that is optimized for speed. Both rely on the I/O console to send and receive data.
The real ingenuity begins with the floppy drive. Duane, who's career revolved around this system, developed a way for a floppy drive to imitate the I/O console. The computer thinks it is reading and writing to a paper tape, when it is in fact reading and writing to a 5.25in floppy inside an ancient CNC machine floppy drive.
And this, dear reader, is where the magic happens. This framework was originally built for interfacing with the 1219 via BIN files over Serial port and was easily changed to support BIN files over floppy. Duane has been working on an off adapting our purple converter box with a raspi to let the 1219 read and write BIN files over Bluetooth.
Make no mistake, you cannot simply SSH into this machine as tons of setup and channel changes must be performed to ready it to receive and send data. That being said, I don't see any other UNIVAC mainframes with Bluetooth [or any other running UNIVAC 1219s at all :(], so I will take what I can get.

What Does Aziraphale Actually Believe, Part 2: The Veil
This is a series of my takes on what Aziraphale believes through the timeline of the show. It is all my personal interpretation, and I am happy to hear others. You donāt need to read them all in order, but know that I am coming from a perspective on Aziraphaleās machinations that may be difficult for people without a psychology background to follow without the first post as a primer. The quick version is that Aziraphale has a set of beliefs that exist in some form or another within his mind. However, at any given moment, only some of them exist āwith awareness.ā The context of the moment will determine what lives on the surface and what stays invisible to him.
This post still has a bit of psychology set up to it, but Iām getting a lot more into the details of how everything relates to Aziraphale specifically, and talking about how I apply that understanding to the motivated reasoning Aziraphale demonstrates in Before the Beginning. About 2.6k words.Ā
In the spicy meta I mentioned how some of Aziraphale's behaviour reminds me of a pattern IRL, where some people want to bottom CNC (consensual non-consent) roleplay, while entertaining a fairly permanent pretense that they don't actually have any desires or want anything in particular. That pretense is about keeping those desires outside of conscious awareness because they conflict with the sense of self. I am repurposing some of my word choices from that discussion and dubbing the walls separating the conscious!Aziraphale from the rest of his mind āthe veil,ā the area stuff lives when it isnāt in his conscious awareness ābehind the veilā, and the cognitive mechanisms that operate in that space veil!Aziraphale.Ā
Immortal Memory
There are two main complications to making sense of what Aziraphale believes. The first complication is that what conscious!Aziraphale believes is heavily changeable within a set of options due to being regularly reconstructed based on what will preserve his sense of self in that context, as described in the first post. The second complication is that the set of Aziraphaleās potential beliefs evolves and adapts over time as his relationships to the world and to the institution of heaven change.
When we think of a personās beliefs changing over time, we often like to think of it as a draft that gets overwritten as it is updated. The new version is up, the old version is gone. New update, this is what it is now. Replace that line with this line, done.Ā
Minds donāt actually work like that. We essentially have muscle memory for our thoughts and opinions. While we can collect an expanding set of potential opinions, and we can neglect to load an inconvenient one into awareness, the old ones don't tend to leave the set of options even when we intend to reject them. If you interpreted something wrong the first time you saw it, you form the memory of the misinterpretation, and you reinforce the wrong memory every time you recall it. This is called an encoding error. Then one day you find out you got it wrong, and you are trying to fight years of ingrained conditioned memory with one data point. It doesnāt matter how unambiguously true that new data point is, years of conditioned memory doesnāt just go away. Itās like trying to forget how to ride a bike. Consider the Mandala Effect.Ā
Aziraphale has millennia of lived experience. He may decide he is changing his mind about something, even with extreme conviction, but that wonāt erase thousands if not millions of years of habitually thinking something else. We have ourselves an angel who has a capacity to swap out what he believes depending on the situation in front of him, and who has thousands of years of evolving belief systems conditioned into his mindās āmuscle memory.ā So not only is he normalised to switching his opinions around, heās got a lot of options for what his opinions can be.
You Play the Hand Youāre Dealt
The metaphor Iām going to go with is like a deck of cards. Anything Aziraphale has ever believed is somewhere in that deck. When a major event happens that forces him to think about things in a new way, he gets a new card, but the old cards donāt leave, the deck just gets bigger. The hand of cards he draws is what shows up in Aziraphaleās perceptible mind. That makes up what he believes in that moment. All the other cards functionally donāt exist to conscious!Aziraphale unless and until they get drawn, and they stop existing to conscious!Aziraphale when returned to the deck.Ā
Cards are not drawn to the hand at random, they are placed there by veil!Aziraphale. That part of Aziraphale makes the calls on what cards from the deck end up in conscious!Aziraphaleās hand. Veil!Aziraphale also has control over when cards leave conscious!Aziraphaleās hand. Conscious!Aziraphale doesnāt know that veil!Aziraphale exists, and assumes everything in the deck is consistent with his current hand. The result is a split Aziraphale, one part that will passively reshape his own opinions and judgements on autopilot to what is useful in the short term at that particular time, and one part blissfully naive to all of that, living as if he is the only part of Aziraphale that could exist, treating the hand he was most recently dealt as the only reality that could exist. The next day it's a different hand, a different reality, and a different conscious!Aziraphale.
Veil!Aziraphale functions like a computer program with a very basic code targeted to reducing specific kinds of imminent stress. It will keep things that are abrasive to Aziraphaleās sense of self out of his hand, keep things that conflict with whatever action he's about to take out of his hand, and not let contradictory things exist in his hand at the same time. It has no sense of long term strategy and cannot be reasoned with.Ā
The deck doesnāt contain all things. It contains the set of things Aziraphale can believe, and while that is a highly self contradictory set, it is not an infinite set. Veil!Aziraphale will run into situations where there is no arrangement of cards that keeps things happy and easy. There will be situations where there is something someone could believe that could be useful, like Gabriel and Michael thinking it is a great idea to kill Sitisās kids and have her give birth 7 more times, but that is going too far for Aziraphale to believe. He has a sense of what feels right, at least by Eden, and he can't make cards that conflict with that. He will try to play the best hand that he can out of what isnāt going too far, and make new cards that stay within what can feel right. Making new cards doesnāt get rid of the old ones, it will always be an option to bring them back.
A Case Study in Motivated Reasoning
In Before the Beginning, we see an Aziraphale who is already terrified of heaven's wrath, while the Star Queen is still naive.Ā (Why I like to use the name Star Queen) This difference matters on a few levels. First, it shows that the seeds of Aziraphaleās ideological separation from the other angels predates Crowleyās involvement. While we will see Aziraphale convince himself to experience believing things out of fear, that isn't quite the same thing as being a true believer the way the other angels are. I would speculate that Aziraphale has already been having disciplinary issues with the institution. Whatever Aziraphale is ideologically speaking, it is not the result of Crowleyās temptations.
Second, it fits in with the manner of trauma response they develop. Aziraphale looks to have been traumatised from a very young start. The Star Queen was having a blast until suddenly they werenāt. This isnāt trauma olympics, this is just to point out that the age of onset correlates with different patterns of likely reactions, and Aziraphale and Crowleyās behaviour as we progress through the story fits those patterns.Ā
Aziraphale comes along with an attitude about what it is or is not their place to do or question as angels. It is not their role to give feedback. He feels positively about the universe being set up to be fancy wallpaper, and is surprised that the Star Queen is upset about it.
Why does Aziraphale seem to actively like the fancy wallpaper plan? Because he is supposed to. He is terrified of heaven, why would he believe something just because heaven says so? Because he is terrified of heaven. Literally that is why. Which experience is the more threatening to the sense of self, the universe where what you believe gets you on heavenās shit list if anyone finds out, or the universe where what you believe organically happens to be what keeps you safe? Veil!Aziraphale's mind generates conscious!Aziraphaleās beliefs on the spot as a defense mechanism in a way that feels organic. Believing what dangerous people want him to believe is safer. Veil!Aziraphale is incentivised to form that hand of cards, which is a fully automatic process, and conscious!Aziraphale only has access to the hand he was given. The other cards functionally do not exist to him.
For those for whom this is hard to follow, you may be imagining it as being a person who knows they believe Y, being told under threat to believe X, trying to convince yourself to adopt a belief you know you donāt agree with. That doesn't tend to work. Belief follows action, but when there is a readily available belief of āI was forced to go along with it,ā there is no need to alter your worldview to explain your behaviour to yourself. So you likely end up pretending to believe X while getting extremely resentful.* That lines up with how the Star Queen sees being asked to like the wallpaper plan, but that is not what Aziraphale's mind is doing.
To the extent that there is a pre-existing Y belief, his mind will not let it out of the veil into his conscious awareness, because that would be dangerous. He is on the verge of existential crisis from even hearing that someone else might believe Y, because it is safest for him to not even have the hypothetical to consider. Veil!Aziraphale decided that he believes X because that is safer and decided Y is contraband, conscious!Aziraphale only knows he believes X.
I Can't Make Bricks Without Clay
This is how motivated reasoning works, and thatās why calling the people susceptible to it stupid and / or irrational isnāt helpful. There are no logical tools someone can use to think themselves out of the problem if the problem is that the relevant facts wont load into awareness. The reason I stick to the term 'motivated reasoning' rather than the more common āwishful thinkingā is that it is very common for motivated reasoning to get us to believe things that are highly unpleasant.
For example, people donāt experience survivor's guilt because āthey want to.ā They experience survivor's guilt because the alternative is experiencing the awareness that any of your loved ones could die at any time and you canāt do anything about it. You can only believe it's your fault people died if you tacitly believe you had the power to stop it. You can frame survivor's guilt as wishing to have the power to be able to protect those you love, but people experience it as guilt and suffering, not as a power trip, because that component doesn't get loaded into awareness. When Aziraphale convinces himself to believe what he is told, he doesn't 'want' to be a bootlicker any more than a school shooting survivor 'wants' to believe itās their fault their friends are dead.Ā
While susceptibility to motivated reasoning does vary across individuals, we are all vulnerable to it. The basic cognitive mechanisms that allow these patterns are present for everyone. I could just as easily talk about conscious!Star Queen and veil!Star Queen. So why do they have opposite reactions to heaven's imposing authority? The age of onset. (IRL these are differences of average, not categorical rules.) Aziraphaleās conditioned fear is baked into his development in a way that gives it more power than usual to keep things out of his awareness (we will see a demonstration of that at Eden) and Aziraphale has 'authority should be feared' and 'authority shouldn't be questioned' cards, because he added them to the deck when he was too young for them to feel wrong. Because Aziraphale has those cards and a particularly aggressive veil, he can pull off the 'have the experience of believing what you are told to believe' survival strategy.Ā
The Star Queen hadn't previously encountered a use for having 'authority should be feared' and 'authority shouldn't be questioned' cards, and they are developed enough now to respond to those concepts with an appropriate 'fuck that.' The Star Queen doesn't have extreme early onset fear baked into their development, so instead of veil!Star Queen keeping their disagreeable opinions behind the veil, it is keeping the reasons to be cautious behind the veil. We might like to think that the young Aziraphale who made those cards was wrong to do so, but I would encourage you to stay your judgment. In the IRL parallels having those cards is often what keeps those children alive.Ā
After the Star Queen expresses the intention to offer suggestions, Aziraphale is concerned for their (singular) wellbeing. He is terrified of how heaven will react, and he is right to be. Aziraphale doesn't want them to get into trouble. And that is very interesting. If Aziraphale was a proper true believer in operation 'shut everything back down again' he would want the Star Queen to get in trouble. He would see their attitude and like them less for it. That doesn't happen. It's not a genuine endorsement of authoritarian hierarchy, or he wouldn't be encouraging the Star Queen to play it safe. It is not a coherent belief system, or he'd have an argument in favour of the shut down plan, not an argument that 'it's not our place to question it'. It's also not an acted position, or he wouldn't be that excited about the fancy wallpaper. Aziraphale's belief in God and the ideal of heaven exists as a defense mechanism against his fear, to preserve his sanity. Ironically, it spends the next 6000+ years making him act fucking insane.Ā

Post Note: When forced to do things under threat, ābelief follows actionā can (not always) reverse and cause a backlash effect in the form of āI believe I am being oppressedā making you reject beliefs that would support the behaviour (Fair.) However, when we are paid to do things, we donāt tend to blame the money, we experience that as we were intrinsically motivated to do the thing. (Tisk.) This is a big part of why political bribery is such an issue.
The money alters what the autopilot parts of our mind allow into our conscious experience, slanting us toward the incentive, blocking any awareness of the influence of the money on our decisions, and then construct a belief system consistent with the decision.Ā People believe the money isnāt affecting their judgment, they totally would have had that position anyway, that's just what they believe. They are incorrect.
On the plus side, we have a pretty reliable method for changing peopleās opinions if we decide to use it. If you want to make someone believe something, pay them to do something consistent with that belief. (Vaccinesā¦cough⦠cough⦠vaccinesā¦)

Most of my friends are the sort of people who collect tools. You probably know folks like this. Maybe you are one, in which case we should hang out so I can use your stuff.
In the time of our ancestors, it was much more difficult to get ahold of specialty tools. If you ran into a job that needed a very obscure industrial tool, you would have to make that tool, or you'd have to head to a local machine shop, where some Actual Adults With Jobs would do the work for you at great expense. Nowadays, you just go on AliExpress and type in "least flammable ultrasonic cleaner."
This is a big disappointment. We've lost that sense of community and making-do. Also, because those machine shops of yore used to contain people who would tell you that what you are doing is stupid. My dad would show up with a stuck bolt in a control arm, and they'd gently explain the concept of "lefty loosey, righty tighty" to him while pulling it out without a problem, right there in the parking lot.
Without this support network, I have thrown myself way into the deep end using an expensive-but-not-expensive-enough tool more times than I can count. Great-Grandpappy Switch, in his time, wouldn't have even imagined that things like "inverter welders" and "home CNC-operated laser cutters" could possibly exist, but he also had very strong opinions about the Moon.
I wish I could tell you that I had a solution, that I've lured know-it-all machinists away from their high-paying jobs making space stations and space motions and forced them to man little info booths in your neighbourhood. That's not the case. What is the case is that all of us are going to have to become experts who won't fall back on the latest "surely this will fix my problem" gewgaws and doodads. And the best way for that to start is for you to send me your tools. For instance, I could really use a drill press right around now. I totally fucked up the bolt on this control arm.

not being funny, not being melodramatic i hope, but i feel like the last year has broken me in a lot of ways. 2023 i mean. i watched a long term relationship disintegrate in my hands until the ultimate betrayal of my trust and safety. i was so stressed and so fucked up all the time.
and now like, i can feel im withdrawing from my friends, im engaging in unhealthy behaviors i will not specify here, despite it all im more lonely than ive ever been, my hobbies are starting to feel like dust in my mouth, and while i'm not actively suicidal, the thought isnt far from my mind in that nasty intrusive thought sort of way.
there are nice things. i have the place to myself. the bed to myself. its quiet. but i feel like ive exhausted the amount of patience people have with me talking about what ive gone through. and as is the nature of things i dont feel as though ive built character or come through hardened. i feel mad. hurt. i want to hurt xer back somehow. take something back because something was taken from me. i feel like i have no recourse. god knows if xe'll hurt someone like xe hurt me again. but thats not even my primary motivation. i just hate feeling like theres nothing. no justice. no satisfaction. nothing that makes being raped a more tolerable experience, which is a silly thing to say. but you understand, right? like, sure i could post somewhere highly visible "In December of 2023 well known SCP Wiki author UraniumEmpire sexually assaulted me" but like what would that accomplish? it sure would put me under a microscope. its a surreal sentence too. hard to explain why. maybe its ultraminor celebrity combined with knowledge that inevitably it can just be denied and nobody will listen.
you know before now i never really noticed how much people fetishize sexual assault? "CNC" and the like. i dont care for it. i dont think they know. its frustrating as an adult online trying to navigate adult spaces. i know its an odd topic, but im fully stream of consciousness right now. i'll see something and it hits me in the gut and so i block the user or close the thing or leave the discord call. yet another addition to the list of things that make my tastes so exacting.
i feel like i should come to some overall point but the only thing coming to mind right now is just 'i hate this'. and i do. i hate this so much. i'm crying a lot more. at stupid things. weird things. memories. dreams. this post. the funny thing is that despite it all, despite the content, despite everything, i hope people read it. i like feeling like i exist. i like feeling real to other people. reminding folks that im not just a joke machine. i have an internal world. i have had a life that's lead me here and despite advantages it has not been good.
did i ever talk about how my high school graduation went? odd digression, bear with me. i feel like its emblematic of how things typically go for me. it's the day i graduate high school. i come downstairs to find my mother on skype with my kansas family. my grandfather is dying. they put him on skype. i watch him die over skype. after sitting alone for some time, i tell my parents i do not want to go through with high school graduation. i am forced to regardless. it is the most miserable day of my life. nobody listens to what i need in the moment. i go through with it, and then we are all shepherded to some kind of entertainment center. for reasons i cannot fathom, we are not allowed to leave for a couple hours. enforced fun time. they bring a stage hypnotist. i sit in silence and watch his antics. i get up and ask one of the people supervising us if i can leave now. they finally say yes. my mother takes me home. she asks if i have a nice time. i say of course i didnt. we drive home in silence.
i have have very rarely felt understood. very rarely felt like i was built to exist in the world. i feel as though i have an expiration date beyond the obvious one. i have grown older and watched people i know operate normally in the world and wondered how they do it. it never clicked for me. autism, transness, otherings. experts looked at me, told me i needed accommodations. never really got them, or they didnt help.
this is getting too long. i asked myself partway through if this was a suicide note but concluded that it wasn't. this is primarily because im scared if i die, they'll separate my cats. adopt them to different homes. they're best friends, they should not be kept apart. i love my cats, even when they're breaking shit and tearing open trash bags.

Okay, deadass, I havenāt slept in coming up on 72 hours. Havenāt even laid down. Havenāt even changed into my nightwear. I knew you could experience confusion and hallucinations by a certain point when youāre sleep deprived but I did not know it was as early as around 72 hours in. I also did not know that you could experience these symptoms while still being upbeat and animated as though youāve slept well.
To give you a little bit of contextāthis is important here, I promiseāI work a cnc machine. These have a big computer screen and keypad to one side and it shows you where itās at in the program it uses to cut features into a workpiece youāve put into the machine. It scrolls through the program pretty quick most of the time so youāre not really expected to actually read it, but just in case you hear a snap or see sparks flying, you need to keep an eye on it so you can stop the machine and have a good estimate of where in the program the error was and thus prevent stuff from exploding. So, as you can imagine, these are things that are very dangerous to operate if youāre confused/inebriated/otherwise not of sound mind (of course, I didnāt know I was confused, otherwise I would have immediately gone to my boss and told him that it wasnāt safe for me to work right now).
Thankfully nothing disastrous happened. But what I did do was stare at an unmoving screen for about four straight minutes before my boss approached to ask me what I was doing. He pointed out that the machine was done with its cycle, and I realized what was going on and told him like, yeah, I think Iām a little disoriented from having not slept in 72 hours and thought the machine was running, so I was waiting for it to finish, unaware that it already had. The movement of the lines of code wasnāt the only thing I was hallucinating as well, because he had me try to read a clock across the room, which I failed to do because I couldnāt see the hands. I also tried to see what the time actually was when I checked my phone and found that I had no idea what my battery percentage was, because the numbers kept rapidly shifting and changing when I looked at them. I was promptly sent home and told to get some substantial rest.
Unfortunately, Iām an insomniac, and my body does not want to do that.
So having said all this, a rare opportunity presents itself for you. Sure, I could just outright say I want dick, but recounting my tale of woe as an explanation for why I want it is way funnier, especially when the circumstances under which I want said dick are⦠this. So if you would kindly rail me until I pass out, it would be much appreciated. Use up whateverās left of the fumes Iām running on and in so doing force my body to shut down because itās not going to do it on its own. And once I at last have absolutely zero energy, let me sleep on you for twelve hours. Please and thank you.
