I have Thoughts on Monster Hunter Wilds' monster designs, and mulling it over and lining things up, they lean more positive than I originally thought.

Below is my ratings for the designs I like, the designs I'm mixed on or outright don't like will be in a reblog. Also spoiler warning for the final boss.

Arkveld: 7/10

Its design has really grown on me as I've learned more about it, but what pushed it over the edge for me is realizing it has the same horn placement as the Equal Dragon Weapon. I do think its scales are a bit messy and I don't like its nose much, but I quite like it.

Jin Dahaad: 7/10

If I could tell what its face is trying to do, I'd give it more points, but the frosty plates coupled with the absolute SIZE of these things saves it for me. Having an ice monster with a black and bronze colour pallet is almost the opposite of what you'd expect, and really accentuates the cold blue and white undertones.

Lala Barina: 11/10

Utter perfection. Not too much, not too little, perfect colour scheme and distribution, amazing theming. She was MADE for me.

Nu Udra: 10/10

WOOOOOO CEPHALOPOD MONSTER HELL YEAH! God I just love it. Look at it! This thing's amazing, and I love how it's covered in flaming tar.

Quematrice: 8/10

Goofy fire chicken. Igniting the flames with its tail is really fun to see. I do think it could have been better with some feathers and less holes in the floppy face bits... Also why is it a brute wyvern? Its name even ends in "trice", like Hypnocatrice. Still, love the design.

Rey Dau: 7/10

Another monster that had to grow on me, but I really appreciate what it does. I think the way its horns need to move into place is a little odd, but I'm otherwise quite fond of it. Gold with a dull green, then the blue electricity coming out, all really works. The head and wings also remind me of a ray, which I find fitting.

Rompopolo: 8/10

Its gross and I love it. Very evocative design, I do not want to be anywhere near these things. But also. Why isn't it a bird wyvern.

Xu Wu: 9/10

Another cool cephalopod, with a more creepy and gross aesthetic. Still love it, but Udra is just a bit more interesting to me.

Zoh Shia: 7/10

I like the weirdness and how it looks like an alien angel, and the face shell reminds me of the Artian armour's helmet. I do kinda wish it looked a bit more organic, and the wings are just a bit too odd for me, but seeing it use Fatalis animations and using attacks from all three of them is certainly Something.

sorry it took me a while to answer this one! i had to think bout it a lot lol. some of my accessories might overlap a little..

wolf - ears and tail, i wear fangs n i like to have sharp nails. metal/silver jewelry n accessories. i have a torn up black baseball cap w a wolf biting through a chain on it, the back says 'believe in change'. i wear that one a lot when im feeling wolf-y. i have a thick chain bracelet with two wolf head biting down on an O ring that i wear a lot.

saluki - platform boots to make me tall. a worn down torn up shirt i have w a heart on it that says lover. collar and fangs, black nails. i wear a spiked septum with a dog bone on it. clothes/jackets with fur on them.

vampire/demon - fangs, a necklace i own with a faux pomegranate seed on it. jewelry, pomegrante lip gloss n vampire/demon themed scents ive collected. sheer clothing items. leopard seal - fangs, fishnet, swimwear (texture makes me feel very seal idk why), having my hair slicked back, claws smilodon fatalis / king cheetah / melanistic bengal tiger - fangs, platform boots, ive had my makeup done to look like a tiger before by my husband for some gender affirming fun! claws, wearing jewelry made out of bones and vertebrae! i always feel species/gender affirmed when i wear red, white, black, silver, and gold. so most of my wardrobe consists of those color ^^ i hope you liked some of those !!! ^^ i wanted to take pics but things are a lil hectic with getting ready to move.

1 - Game/gen you started with

2nd gen, with MH Freedome Unite! I was fairly young and definitely not good at it nor used to actually hard games (like, got stuck for weeks against low rank Congalala levels of bad), so it was a very formative experience. It was a bit clunky as a game but I have so many good memories and hunts from it forever engraved on my mind. The experience of slowly improving to the point of conquering the entire game is something I'll never forget.

While I might be a bit biased I also think it had one of the best vibes, with the Snowy Mountains and the fantastic Pokke Village theme and the good old tower. Like, it's probably not my favorite Monster Hunter anymore, but every time I think back about the things I love the most about this franchise, fighting the White Fatalis on top of the tower with this in the background is one of the first things that comes to mind:

When I first got to Placidusax in Elden Ring, the first thing I thought is "this guy wishes he could be like the MHFU White Fatalis."

10 - Favorite armor set

I'm always a bit on the edgy side with armor designs, so obviously I used the Vaal Hazak set for most of World (& often applied its layered set during Iceborne even when I changed armors)

I dig the "Dark Lord" vibe.

Velkhana is pretty nice, too. Makes me feel like I came straight out of Irythill from Dark Souls III:

Might be missing some great set from older games, but unfortunately my memory is a bit too vague on those due to how much time passed, I remember the sets from World more clearly.

18 - What weapon(s) you play and what you like about it

I like most weapons, but I use the Greatsword the most because it's the one I'm best with (fits my playstyle the most and does enough damage and is simple enough to cover me even when I'm playing badly or too aggressively or not reading the monster too well, even if I miss the final blows), and also it feels incredibly good when the charged attacks land properly. I like its versatility, having the option of sheathing and running around while still being able to hit hard in an instant and a semi-functional guard in case I need it.

I especially used it in World since there are huge gaps of time in between my playthroughs so by the time I come back I already forgot whatever I tried to learn of the other weapons and I go back to my trusted GS, I think I defeated pretty much everyone with it. It was also my main in Generations because the Aerial style was cool.

I varied a lot more in older games, especially in MHFU where I also used the Bow, the Dual Blades and the Longsword, and in MH4U where I used the Insect Glaive almost as much and loved the Charge Blade. That said whenever I'll start a new MH I plan to properly learn another weapon and rely less on the Greatsword, unless I really need to go back to it for a particularly hard fight

32 - Describe what kind of NPC you think you'd be in a Monster Hunter game.

Probably a random villager sitting by the kitchen with a weirdly vast knowledge of monsters facts & myths for someone who doesn't hunt nor work with the guild researchers

ik someone probably already mentioned this somewhere but you can hear a bit of the forest and hills/fatalis theme in zoh shia’s final phase theme

given how it also utilizes lightening i uh. i’m kinda beginning to theorize part of the monsters that got dna cannibalized to make zoh is white fatalis aka god himself

would also justify the regen because the fatalis trio is capable of doing that-

You know, i was holding myself back from mentioning the Jiivas and bioenergy, but since you mention it, i suppose.. I could spill some bullshit nonsense that's on my brain neurons, as a little treat....

The land spine seems very much a mirror to the Everstream, and wylk one of bioenergy. It's impossible to tell at this point if that is an actual pattern, or if "thingy that produces energy that the environments runs off of gets taken over by weird dragon" is just a good template for a story gimmick, however i think that for the time being, making that comparison isn't wack territory. Zoh Shia's theme also reminds me of Jiivas, in a very strange way. Xeno'jiiva's theme is very playful, it's playful sometimes, sometimes threatening and mysterious, but overall weirdly upbeat, and Zoh Shia's initial theme has a similar quality to it. The second theme, on the other hand, while having some of Fatalis's leitmotif in it, has choirs which are very varied on what voices sing and how. There is terror, like in Fatalis's theme, but then there's chanting like in Safi'Jiivas, and even further in there's sorrow, more similar to Dire Miralis's theme. These different ways to sing though could also reflect the different Fatalis themes, as White Fatalis's also has singing similar to Safi's, which feel less like fear or sadness, but instead like a summoning chant, and this could even just represent the divine aura that Zoh Shia has visually, being that it was constructed, and looks like an angel (a guardian angel, might i say). Meanwhile the Sorrowful singing is also something present in Crimson Fatalis's theme, and Crimson's theme in general has very big similarities to the second half of of Dire's. The most strange part to me truly is the first theme, even beyond the similarities to Xeno's, it's just a much weirder vibe for Zoh Shia. It's not a baby like Xeno, and the surrounding lore involves experimentation and war (mind you some of the instruments do sound militaristic, but that could also be expressing the Hunter's perspective). Why is its initial theme so damn playful ? I wanna know what context that draws from and what it's trying to say about the monster.

I also can't help but notice we are once again seeing a sort of "biblically accurate" angel-like visual (i know the biblically accurate part is an oversimplification, but i'm not knowledgeable enough on the subject of religion to explain it), which also brings the Jiivas to mind.

Overall what's obvious here is that Zoh Shia gives forbidden dragon vibes, for reasons that probably go far beyond just the monster itself. I'm guessing we'll be coming back to its situation in a future update or the DLC, the same way Iceborne expanded on Xeno, considering they're not just being vague about that thing, but instead very actively covering any track that could lead to proper speculation, chiefly by not giving us any equipment for it, since that would require making descriptions for them which would give hints to something about the monster, or folklore surrounding it. The closest things we have to a hint about Anything are the names of it's two themes: Arrant Calamity and Justice Breaks Forth But the first just, again, refers back to Fatalis, and the second most likely just speaks of the Hunter's perspective, rather than being a bit of insight like "The Vast Ocean Set Aflame", "Chime From a Shimmering Bell" or "For the Emperor's Amusement"

What i'm drawing from this is that i really need to sit down and do a good listen of all the amazing music we've had in Wilds. I need to try to pick at those monster themes properly.

I might as well also mention that one of my biggest copecannons, which i use to explain Safi'Jiiva's extremely boring design, is the idea that it grows to mimic the traits of other predators in its surrounding environment. However that isn't anywhere near backed up enough by lore to be fit to associate with Zoh Shia.

Currently considering how likely it is that the very obvious Fatalis motifs found in Zoh Shia could be a red herring.

I definitely don't think they'd just make a complete Frankenstein's monster of a creature. It's definitely based on the equal dragon weapon, considering it was quite literally a weapon made by humans and wyvernians for use in war, but then again, it's likely that Alatreon, with its backwards features and control over all elements, was also based on the equal dragon weapon. Each takes different aspects of that concept art, but ultimately the equal dragon weapon itself doesn't exist, and never will, just like any other concept art from when MH itself was merely an idea to be built upon.

I think option one is that Zoh Shia is, or perhaps was an actual elder dragon species, one predisposed to take in genetic material from other things. After all, it's been shown that Wyverians would strategically choose what monsters could be useful to make into guardians for very specific jobs.

So it's either Zoh Shia was originally something that fit the purpose of having random Fatalis bits stuck into it, or the Fatalis motifs aren't a red herring, and Zoh Shia is a Fatalis the ancients of Wyveria tried to make into a guardian, through whatever mean they would use for other monsters, but the process of course fucked up massively, leaving nothing but a frail, misshapen echo behind.

It is a very simple edition. 1 Audio CD with orchestrated versions of 13 pieces from the FFVIII Soundtrack. Lenght: 1:04:12. Transparent CD case, and white tray. The disc itself is also very simple, lacking any images on it.

Includes a booklet. Good quality, matte paper. The printing quality is also very good. I can’t read japanese, so I can’t tell what it says. At the final pages, there are lyrics for “Eyes On Me” (English), and for “Liberi Fatali” (Latin).

It shows various pictures (most of them black and white) of Nobuo Uematsu, Shirou Hamaguchi, and Hironobu Sakaguchi (Creator of the FF franchise).

Original MSRP was 2,718 yen, around $20 USD (current exchange rate, August, 2022). I paid close to $45 USD (New), including shipping from Japan and taxes, and, most likely, a markup from the seller. I’m unaware of whether this album is still being made or not.

I’m listening to it as I write. Amazing, in every sense. It brings back good memories. Not like I’m about to cry or anything. Something got in my eye. Track 12 “Ending Theme” is a master piece. I can’t help but smile.

Some of these versions were unknown to me. If Square Enix ever remakes FFVIII this is how the new soundtrack would have to sound.
