Day 15: William Haines (1900 - 1973)

"What makes him revolutionary is the authenticity with which he lived his life at a time when there were no role models. He was an example of someone living with integrity and not letting himself be defined by others." - William J. Mann, Haines's biographer

William Haines was one of the top box office stars in the 1920s, known for his "wisecracker" persona. He was an openly gay man, deeply in love with his partner, Jimmie Shields. In 1933, Louis B. Mayer gave Haines an ultimatum: break up with Jimmie for a studio-arranged heterosexual marriage, or lose his acting career. Legend has it that he told Mayer, "I'll give up Jimmie when you give up your wife." Haines chose Shields and left acting in 1935.

Haines became a very successful interior designer in Hollywood, decorating the homes of Joan Crawford, Carole Lombard, Ronald Reagan, and even Mayer. He and Shields stayed together for another 50 years.

St Claire Hall Episcopal Girls School

AKA (Kemper Hall)

Kemper Hall was an Episcopal girls school for day and boarding students which recognized 1870 as the year of its official founding. The predecessor to Kemper Hall, the Kenosha Female Seminary, was chartered by the rectors, wardens, and vestry of St. Mathews Episcopal Church in 1855, but the school did not open until 1865. Mrs. H.M. Crawford operated the school as St. Claire's Hall for a short time. The school's founders purchased the home of Senator Charles Durkee and nine surrounding acres of land on the Lake Michigan shore in Kenosha. The Durkee mansion served as the school's central classroom and administration building throughout the school's 105-year history.

Bishop Jackson Kemper was elected trustee of the female seminary in 1866. Following Kemper's death in 1870, his successor, Bishop William Armitage, made an urgent request to the Milwaukee Diocesan Council to redeem and secure the school as a living monument to Bishop Kemper. At that time, the school was renamed Kemper Hall. The Reverend George M. Everhart served as the school's first headmaster from 1870 until 1878. The first graduating class celebrated commencement in the school's new chapel in 1876.

In 1878 a group of women from the Sisters of St. Mary, an Episcopal women's order located in Peekskill, New York, arrived in Kenosha to administer the school and to return it to financial solvency. Among the sisters was Mother Mary Clare who became the first headmistress in 1883 and served in that capacity until 1918. Mother Mary Ambrose, who joined the school in 1911, served as headmistress from 1931 until 1967. Other headmistresses included Sister Sarah, 1878; Sister Edith, 1879-1883; Mother Mary Maude, 1918-1920; Sister Celestine, 1920-1922; Sister Flora Therese, 1922-1931; and Sister Margaret Jane, 1967-1969. Anna J. Morse was influential in shaping the curriculum and academic policies of the school, serving as director of studies from the early 1930s until the early 1960s. A lay Board of Trustees assisted the Sisters of St. Mary with the school's administration and most of the teachers were lay persons. Several wealthy benefactors contributed to the financial support of Kemper Hall including Zalmon G. Simmons, who donated eleven acres of land to the school; Charles W. Nash, president of Nash Motors Company, who donated his home to the school in 1938; and James T. Wilson, banker and Nash Motors Company executive, who donated Wilson House, a mansion across the street from the school.

In 1969 the Sisters of St. Mary turned the school over to a Board of Trustees and the Reverend Raymond Gayle became the second headmaster. In 1970 a co-educational program for students in grade one through grade nine was initiated, accepting boys as day students only. The Reverend Russell Ingersoll succeeded the Reverend Mr. Gayle as headmaster in 1972. Kemper Hall closed in June 1975 due to financial problems. During the school's 105-year history, 1,625 students attended. A peak enrollment of 140 students was reached shortly after World War II.

“Dude, why are you hiding? Come on, everybody is looking for you.” Danny said as he sat next to Leland.

“Leave me alone, bro. I’m just… contemplating.” Leland replied with a look of defeat on his face.

At this point, Danny sighed in frustration. “Look, Leland. I get it. I truly do. But you got to get over Julie. She doesn’t see you that way. Believe me. I used to be like this with a girl back in high school. Then I woke up and realized she wasn’t the one for me. Please, listen to me, Leland. It’s not worth pursuing.”

“Danny it’s just… I love her deeply. I mean, ever since we first met, over time, I developed strong feelings for her. We grew so close, and sometimes she flirted with me, so I really thought she liked me back.” Leland began with a sigh as the tears fell. “Besides, what does she see in Sonny that I don’t have? Not saying he's a bad guy at all. Dude is like a brother to me. But why him and not me? What does he have that I don’t?”

Danny tried to come up with an answer, but couldn’t. He looked up in time and his face grew pale. Someone snuck in and heard everything. “J-Julie! What a nice surprise!” Danny chuckled nervously.

Julie had her hands on her hips, and she wasn’t happy AT ALL. She heard Leland gulp in genuine fear, which made her grin devilishly. She was going to set the record straight and make sure he suffered her wrath. “Danny, be a gentleman and leave me alone with Leland for a bit? I need to talk with him.”

Danny noticed the look on her face that clearly told him to do what she said or also get yelled at. It was clear that she was legitimately pissed off, so he knew not to get in her way. He got up out of fear and walked towards her.

“Thank you.” Whispered Julie in his ear, before he walked out of the hall. She made her way over to Leland, who was visibly frightened by her ice-cold presence. He knew he fucked up and there’s nowhere to run. Even if he attempted to run, she’d catch him, because she had the best stamina.

Music: William Axt.  Diana (Joan Crawford) is a Good Girl who people think is a Bad Girl because she likes to dance the Charleston on tabletops. Ann (Anita Page) is a Bad Girl posing as a Good Girl to try to land a rich husband. Beatrice (Dorothy Sebastian) is a Good Girl trying to hide the fact that she used to be a Bad Girl from Norman (Nils Asther), the man she has fallen in love with. And so it goes, as Ann steals Ben (Johnny Mack Brown) away from Diana, and Beatrice confesses her past sins to Norman, who marries her but doesn't really trust her. This romantic melodrama was a big hit that established Crawford as a star. She's lively and funny and dances a mean Charleston -- a far cry from the long-suffering shoulder-padded Crawford of Mildred Pierce (Michael Curtiz, 1945) and the melodramas of her middle age, though we can see a hint of the Crawford to come when she squares off against Page, using her big eyes and lipsticked mouth as formidable weapons. The movie is semi-silent: It has a synchronized music track with some forgettable songs and occasional sound effects like the ring of a telephone and the knock on a door, and once there's a spoken line from a bandleader: "Come on, Miss Diane, strut your stuff." But most of the dialogue is confined to intertitles that tell us Diana has asked a boy to dance ("Wouldst fling a hoof with me?") or that Freddie (Edward J. Nugent) has asked Ann if she wants a drink ("Lí'l hot baby want a cool li'l sip?"). The Jazz Age was probably never like this, even at its height, which was several years earlier, but there is fun to be had here. The story, such as it is, was by Josephine Lovett, and those title cards were the work of Marian Ainslee and Ruth Cummings, who give it a mildly feminist spin: Despite the slut-shaming, the film is solidly on the side of the rights of women to have a good time. Lovett's story and George Barnes's cinematography were considered for Oscars -- there were no official nominations this year -- but lost out.
