Science Saturday
Here are some wood engravings and a chromolithograph from a new addition to our Historical Curriculum Collection, two titles bound in one volume: A Handbook of Natural Philosophy and Elements of Sound, Light, and Heat, both by American educators William James Rolfe (1827-1910) and Joseph Anthony Gillet (1837-1908), published in 1868 as part of the 6-volume Cambridge Course of Physics series by Boston educational publisher Woolworth, Ainsworth, & Co. with the second title also published in New York by A. S. Barnes & Co.
The chromolithograph of the spectrograph was printed by the Boston German-American lithographer Augustus Meisel (1824-1885). The wood engravings (probably metal plates produced from the original blocks) depict, from the top, a hydraulic press, a vacuum jar, a stationary steam engine, and a steam locomotive. The last image depicts the interaction of waves:
It represents the forms produced by the intersection of direct and reflected water-waves in a vessel. The point of disturbance is marked by the smallest circle in the figure, and is midway between the centre and the circumference. . . . In like manner a great variety of sound-waves may exist together in the air. . . . In this way thousands of waves may be transmitted through the air at the same time without losing their individual character. The same case holds good here as in the case of water-waves; namely, that every particle of air is affected by a motion which is the algebraic sum of all the single motions imparted to it.

Heaven's Gate (Michael Cimino, 1980)
Cast: Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, Isabelle Huppert, Brad Dourif, Joseph Cotten, Jeff Bridges. Screenplay: Michael Cimino. Cinematography: Vilmos Zsigmond. Production design: Tambi Larsen. Film editing: Lisa Fruchtman, Gerald B. Greenberg, William Reynolds, Tom Rolf. Music: David Mansfield.
Heaven's Gate, for all its history as a calamitous flop, is not so much a bad movie as an inchoate one. You can see it go awry from the very beginning, when it tries to pass off the ornate architecture of Oxford University, where the scenes were filmed, for the spare red brick and granite of Harvard Yard. The film opens with a frenzied commencement for the Harvard class of 1870, which devolves into a swirling dance to the "Blue Danube" waltz. It's potentially an exhilarating opening, but it goes on and on and on, and serves almost no purpose in the rest of the film, except to introduce us to James Averill (Kris Kristofferson) and his friend William C. Irvine (John Hurt), members of the graduating class. Then the film jumps 20 years, to Wyoming, where Averill is marshal of Johnson County. We never learn why Averill, who is a wealthy man, winds up in this hard and thankless job, living in near-squalor and hooked up with Ella Watson (Isabelle Huppert), the madam of a brothel. As for Irvine, with whom Averill reunites during a stopover in Casper on his way back to Johnson County, he has somehow become involved with the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, a group of cattlemen led by the sinister Frank Canton (Sam Waterston) who are trying to keep immigrants from settling on the land they want to graze. It's clear that director-screenwriter Michael Cimino at some point wanted Irvine, who is presented as an effete intellectual, to serve as a kind of chorus, commenting on the action, and as a foil to the more robust Averill, but Irvine keeps getting lost in the turns of the narrative and the excesses of Cimino's ideas. (The shooting took so long that Hurt was able to film David Lynch's The Elephant Man during his down time from Heaven's Gate.) In Casper we also meet Nathan Champion (Christopher Walken), who works as a kind of hit man for the cattlemen. But Champion is also a friend of Averill's and a rival of his for the attentions of Ella. There is the core of a more conventional Western in the relationships among these characters, but Cimino isn't interested in being conventional. What he is interested in are the elaborate set pieces like the waltz scene, a later scene with dozens of couples on roller skates, enormous throngs of extras milling through the streets of Casper, crowds of immigrants making their way to Johnson County, and battle scenes in which the citizens of the Johnson County settlement retaliate against the troops led by Canton that are determined to exterminate them. There are pauses in the hullabaloo for quieter scenes designed to work out the triangle formed by Averill, Champion, and Ella, but their characters are so lightly sketched in that we don't have much sense of the motives behind their sometimes enigmatic actions. And yet, it's a somehow maddeningly watchable film, thanks in large part to the often breathtaking cinematography of Vilmos Zsigmond, a committed performance by Huppert, the Oscar-nominated sets of Tambi Larsen and James L. Berkey, and yes, the sheer extravagance of what Cimino throws onto the screen. Without a plausible screenplay it could never have been a good film, but occasionally you can see how it might have been a great one.

“Matoaka” (Part 1)
for the tercentenary of
the College of William and Mary
1.
Place names, the names of streams—
the Rappahannock, the Roanoke, the Potomac,
and that commemoration of sometime
majesty, the James,
its tributary the Chickahominy,
the Pamunkey and the Mattaponi, each
what a people called itself once, subsumed in
a gazetteer, the names
half-overgrown by the long quasi-
anonymity that is history: beyond
the sunken garden, the crape-
myrtle symmetries,
past the foundation-stone surnames
(Blair, Wythe, Ewell, Brafferton,
Crim Dell), the wooded hillsides,
in a rippling pause,
the gathered lisp of watersheds,
describe a lake, place-named—
at random, a homage, half-absent-
minded, a penance even?—
Matoaka. A woman's name, though
not the one we know her by,
or imagine we do. To Captain
John Smith, our own
Odysseus—bright, contentious, crafty,
forever on the move—she'd been
Pocahuntus, well formed but
wanton, still a child.
Nausicaä, only younger? A king's
daughter as advocate: that was
the story we told once, from which
we've since recoiled
(we being history) in favor of
the hidden, discreditable motive,
the flagrant fib. Who was she?
As Paul De Man,
for instance. Ask Nietzsche, Freud
or Lévi-Strauss. Ask Parson
Weems, while you're about it.
Ask any woman
what she thinks, or thought she did.
The stories we tell ourselves keep changing.
Bronze-immobilized, demure in
deerskin, the heathen
princess turns to bric-a-brac. As
kings' names do. As words—the ritual
twiddle of a once-abrasive contour—
have also done.
Begin again. Go back to Majesty,
the word personified, a woman:
the dazzlement, the hankering after
gold, fame, danger,
the smell, the pomandered stink
of it, of her, ruffed, wigged, gemmed,
powdered, breathing, to be adored.
Backto the courtier
knighted at Greenwich, given leave
to name the shore he claimed, the year
fifteen hundred eighty-four of (mark this)
our redemption, Vir-
ginia. Such were the forms
and usages, now quaint, of royalty.
Behind them, silences. Silence at
Roanoke, on the Outer
Banks, what little there ever was
to remember long overgrown: the dunes'
expanse, the alrgesse of it
past the unsullied
line of breakers, overrun
with grapevines, sassafras,
the massive green of cedars;
the white birds, startled,
flying up; an unclad, hospitable
people bringing dressed skins,
the shimmer of a glut of pearls.
named Virginia,
a place without detriment or
sleight of language. Households.
Marriages. A girl-child
named Virginia.
Five years later, footprints.
Ruined walls. A half-carved word.
What happened? by whose fault?
Silence at Werewo-
comoco, seat of Powhatan,
who—as Captain Smith, his match
in guile, did not forbear to say—
had his own majesty.
Silence at henrico, the lands upriver,
and at Varina, where John Rolfe
planted the golden weed that one day
would amount to money—
Varina, where after many inner
wrestlings, after consultations,
mumblings and catechizings,
he'd bring his bride,
not as Matoaka or, any longer,
Pocahuntus but, renamed in Christ,
Rebecca. What she called herself
by then is not recorded.
— Amy Clampitt, A Silence Opens (1993)

Look at and discuss the first settlers to America on December 6, 1606. The journey to Virginia began on three ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery add screenshots, information and comments on the new settlers and affects on environment and the indigineous tribes/people.
On 6th December, 104 English men and boys travelled out to Virginia in on three ships. Those ships were called the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The year turned 1607 and all of the ships and men arrived in North America and started to set up their settlements. On 13th May, they named the town, Jamestown, after the English King James I and became the first permanent English society in North America.
June 15, they started to set up a triangle-shaped fort with a bulwark at each corner, holding four or five pieces of artillery. This kept them safe from any Indians that were trying to hunt them down.
On June 22, Captain Newport left for England to get more supplies.
While Captin Newport was gone a variety of diseases started apering. They were drinking water from the salty or slimy river, which was one of several things that caused the death of many. The people were dying from swellings, fluxes, fevers, famine, and sometimes wars.
late 1609, Powhatan Indians and the English had a bad relationship due to the English demanding too much food during a drought. 1609-10 when winter hit, it was known as the "Starving Time." During that winter the English were afraid to leave the fort, because of their fear of being killed by the Powhatan Indians. Due to this situation, the English tried to eat anything edible, like small animals, leather shoes and belts.
By early 1610, William Strachey announced that 80-90% of the settlers, had died due to starvation and disease.
In May 1610, shipwrecked settlers who had been stranded in Bermuda finally arrived at Jamestown.
In 1612, John Rolfe, one of many shipwrecked on Bermuda, helped turn the settlement into a profitable venture.
In 1619, the first documented Africans were captured and brought to Virginia to work the tobacco fields.
In 1619, the Virginia Company recruited and shipped over about 90 women to become wives and start families in Virginia.
Peace between the Powhatan Indians and the English, brought about by the conversion and marriage of Pocahontas (kidnapped by the English in 1613) and John Rolfe in 1614, ended in 1622.

Looking at what roughly happened back then, there was a lot of suffering and deaths, I could imaging the land being quite messed up and there were bodies that they weren't able to clear at the time. I feel bad for the Indians also, I have no idea why we treated them differently and it surprises me that Pocahontas, one of my favourite Disney movies, portrays John Rolph and Pocahontas as a loving couple when it was actually against her will so the English and the Indians had a treaty.
Looking back at our history, I find people quite disappointed sometimes when they couldn't figure out how to stop simple diseases. I'm lucky I live in a time where I know how to get clean water and that I get it also through the taps in our home. However, it is made that they could find out how to feed themselves, and most people would have trouble being in that situation.

2006 - Procol Harum
Matthew Fisher, a founding member of Procol Harum won a High Court battle over who wrote their song '’A Whiter Shade Of Pale’. Fisher who played organ on the 1967 hit had argued he wrote the distinctive organ melody, but Mr Justice Blackburne ruled he was entitled to just 40% of the copyright, (rather than the 50% he was seeking). The court decided lead singer Gary Brooker's input was more substantial and Fisher's claim for back royalties - of up to £1m - was also rejected. For almost 40 years, the song had been credited to lead singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid.
