😂 I know, this is purely for me and the maybe one other person in the world who might read it. Gotta find joy in life right? Writing random characters gives me joy atm. Pitch Black adjacent stuff doesn’t happen til chapter 2. This is planned to be 3 chapters.

BEFORE
This planet doesn't offer much; it was a shit hole, like most places. Anyone still going got used to this kind of thing, few had the luxury of stepping foot on a nice planet. One needs rich friends and important high-level connections for that kind of thing, or they're born into it.
When you make your living catching escapees, you make enemies, not friends, especially not friends in high places even if they’re the ones who hired you in the first place. Sure, they'll be appreciative, especially if you caught some asshole they’ve been tracking for years. But what you won’t get is an invitation to dinner or private island trips.
This place was just a pit stop before heading to Central and getting her newest job. Until then, Kiara didn’t plan on doing much. She got a decent room in a better part of town, north of the red-light district and east of the canal where all sorts of shady shit went down. She would hold up in the sweet spot, far away from all the drama yet close to the transit terminal.
She would sleep, take a long soaking bath maybe - do all the things she couldn't while on mission. Maybe if the right kind of person comes along, she'd get laid too, it has been a while. Lots of people hooked up on the mission, the men, women, and everyone in between. It happened often whether it was in the dark or behind closed doors yet barely hidden.
The job was dangerous enough, no need to add a mess of human emotions into the whole thing. Most of the men Kiara was posted with were pieces of shit, so it made it easy to adhere to this rule. Then, there were the few times she’d considered, but would never follow through with it. Besides, she liked to focus just on the task at hand and take care of her personal needs once the job was done, even if it meant waiting for a while.
.
Reaching her two-drink limit for the night, Kiara kicked back in the booth with her legs extended across the open seat, so no one got any ideas. If anyone was going to keep company with her, she’d extend the invite herself.
There was one-sided interest coming from a few onlookers, but no one caught her eye until a new guy walked through the doors and headed to the bar. There was a serious look on his face, and he carried himself like a marine officer, even with his plain clothes on.
Once at the bar, he scanned the room, his blue eyes cold and observant - then his eyes met hers. He seemed clean cut, with no facial hair, the hair on his head was dark blonde and a slight reddish undertone and cut short. There was something intense and broody about him, but it didn’t take away from his handsomeness.
His blue eyes stayed fixed on her until the bartender came to him. He turned slightly, his back to Kiara as he made his order. She took another sip, this time eyeing up his form and the way the long-sleeved black top fit perfectly, highlighting how fit he was - but not overly so. There were no bulging muscles or mass- she wasn’t into that kind of thing anyway.
The blue-eyed man turned in his seat, looking back at her again, this time with a beer in his hand. Kiara sat up from her slouching position and slowly lifted one leg off the seat, then the other.
A slight grin ticked on his lips. He stood and made his way over to her, not in a rush, nor a hurry. As he reached the table, Kiara relaxed against the padding and took him in.
He slid into the booth, and leaned back as his eyes raked over her,
“Johns.” he said when they made eye contact again.
“Mora.” she raised her glass, eyes still locked on his as he clicked his beer to it.
Not breaking eye contact, they both brought their drinks to their lips.

only one of you is going to make it and you’re afraid it's going to be you, or, alternatively: you are standing by the tragic hero and it is looking rough out there-
( @lasilhouetteinbianco i did it there’s moby. whoo)
A History of My Brief Body, Billy-Ray Belcourt | Antigonick, Sophokles trans. Anne Carson | The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry | Doña Juana “la Loca” (1877), Francisco Pradilla | Giovanni’s Room, James Baldwin | THE TRAGIC HERO UPON REACHING THE END OF THE SCRIPT REALIZES HE HAS BEEN DEAD THIS WHOLE TIME, Joan Tierney | Wishbone, Richard Siken | Orpheus and Eurydice, George Frederic Watts | Bitter Water, The Oh Hellos | Sonnet 116, William Shakespeare | YOUR LOVE FINDS ITS WAY BACK, Sierra Mulder | Nymphs Finding the Head of Orpheus (detail, 1905), John William Waterhouse |  Wishbone, Richard Siken | Richard Siken, in an interview with James Hall | Moby Dick, Herman Melville | Weeping Nude (1913-14), Edvard Munch | Love and Pain (1895), Edvard Munch | Metamorphoses, Ovid
[ID: An assortment of various quotes, lyrics, and paintings from a variety of sources.
1. To love someone / is firstly to confess: I’m prepared / to be devastated by you.
2. Ismene: I can help you suffer. // Antigone: No. // Ismene: I can give you reasons not to die. //  Antigone: No.
3. And he took me by the hand. But he was still worrying. “It was wrong of you to come. You will suffer. I shall look like I was dead, and that will not be true...” I said nothing.
4. A painting of a young woman dressed in black. She stands in blank despair beside a casket in an open field. She is surrounded by a procession of numerous mourners, as smoke from a behind her rises into the air.
5. What are we staying here for? How long do you / want to sit in this house, eating your heart out?
6. You are kneeling at the water’s throne / When preparing for an ending scene / It’s important that / Swords drop like anchors / Yours will never rise again / I am watching from the cowberries, or / From your mother’s curtains, as if / Through a burial shroud, or
7. And it’s another wrong-man-dies scenario / and we keep doing it, Henry, / keep saying until we get it right... but we / always win and we never quit.
8. A painting of Orpheus and Eurydice at the entrance to Hades. Orpheus, in a toga, reaches out to catch Eurydice as she goes limp and pale, soul having returned to the Underworld. In the background a dead tree trunk can be seen.
9. I am not a fool entire / No, I know what is coming / You will bury me beneath the tree / I climbed when I was a child
10. Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, / But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
11. My throat is a beehive pitched into the river. Look! / Look how long my love can hold it’s breath.
12. A painting of Orpheus’ head floating down a river after being torn apart by the Maenads. His face is turned upward, with pale skin and long red hair. His lyre floats beside him, alongside numerous lily pads and lilies.
13. See, we’ve won again / here we are at the place where I get to beg / for it where I get to say, Please,
14. Eventually something you love is going to be taken away. And then you will fall to the floor crying. And then, however much later, it is finally happening to you: you’re falling to the floor crying thinking, “I am falling to the floor crying,” but there’s an element of the ridiculous to it — you knew it would happen and, even worse, while you’re on the floor crying you look at the place where the wall meets the floor and you realize you didn’t paint it very well.
15. “...Sleeping? Aye, toil how we may, we all sleep on the field. Sleep? Aye, and rust amidst greenness; as last years scythes flung down, and left in the half-cut swathes — Starbuck!” But blanched to a corpse’s hue with despair, the Mate had stolen away.
16. A painting of a nude woman sitting upon her bed, hunched over with her head in her hands and legs sprawled. She appears to be weeping. Her long, dark hair, spills around her shoulders and into her lap.
17. A painting of a woman and a man embracing each other. The woman has warm skin and long red hair, which spills over and contrasts with the man’s pale, grey skin. She buries her face into his nape, and he into her arms.
18. But when she saw him in his hapless plight, / though angry at his scorn, she only grieved. End ID.]

any good hamdad anecdotes? i've heard of a few and they're always really cute
Absolutely. I'll spare you the sad ones.
The time Hamilton chose crabs over Angelica's pie and teasingly reassured her it wasn't because they moved it (Hamilton was prone to forgetfulness, it's likely Angelica taunted him about this);
Give my love to Angelica & assure [her] that I did not leave her pye out of resentment for her having changed its original destination; but because it was impossible to take it with us without abandonning a basket of Crabs which was sent to my care for Mrs. Rensselaer. It has always been my creed that a lady’s pleasure is of more importance than a Gentleman’s, so the pye gave way to the Crabs. It was a nice question, but after mature reflection I decided in favour of the latter. Perhaps as a Creole I had some sympathy with them.
(source — Alexander Hamilton to Elizabeth Hamilton, [1801])
Three days before the duel, Hamilton laid out under a tree with all his kids until it got dark;
The next day, Sunday, before the heat of the day, [Alexander Hamilton] walked with his wife over all the pleasant scenes of his retreat. On his return to the house, his family being assembled, he read the morning service of the Episcopal church. The intervening hours till evening were spent in kind companionship; and at the close of the day, gathering around him his children under a near tree, he laid with them upon the grass until the stars shone down from the heavens.
(source — Life of Alexander Hamilton, by John Church Hamilton)
While preparing for the Grange, camping out in the yard reminded Hamilton of his war days and he told the kids about war stories;
[D]uring the erection of [Hamilton’s] rural dwelling, he caused a tent to be pitched, and camp-stools to be placed under the shading trees. He measured distances, as though measuring the frontage of a camp; and then, as he walked along, his step seemed to fall naturally into the cadenced pace of a practiced drill. It was his delight in his hours of relaxation to return to scenes and incidents of his early life, when fighting for this country, and praying for its protection.
(source — Life of Alexander Hamilton, by John Church Hamilton)
Hamilton often slept besides his kids, and found amusement in playing with Holly;
I am here my beloved Betsy with my two little boys John & William who will be my bed fellows to night. The day I have passed was as agreeable as it could be in your absence; but you need not be told how much difference your presence would have made […] The remainder of the Children were well yesterday. Eliza pouts and plays, and displays more and more her ample stock of Caprice.
(source — Alexander Hamilton to Elizabeth Hamilton, [March 20, 1803])
Hamilton used to sing while Angelica played the piano;
Hamilton's gentle nature rendered his house a joyous one to his children and friends. He accompanied His daughter Angelica when she played and sang the piano. His intercourse with his children was always affectionate and confiding, which excited in them a corresponding confidence and devotion.
(source — Reminiscences of James A. Hamilton)
Hamilton used to take James on carriage rides when he had to travel places and gave him advice;
While we were living at the Grange I used to drive out with my father, and often accompanied him when he dined with his friend Gouverneur Morris. During one of these drives, soon after my conversation with my uncle, I told my father what I had learned, and made the suggestion which Mr. Morton had requested. He replied without hesitation, ‘‘No, my son; if I received a part of the profits of that business, I should be responsible for it; as I cannot attend to it, I cannot consent to receive what I do not earn.’’
(source — Reminiscences of James A. Hamilton)
Hamilton often helped his sons with their speeches, and once gave James a thesis on discretion as a subtle hint he was a bit too talkative;
The first impression as to the words underscored was, that I might need the Thesis as an exercise. Immediate subsequent events of the most painful character induced the belief that it was intended as an admonition that I wanted that ‘homely virtue,’ discretion, of which the thesis treated. How far I have profited by the admonition this relation of the errors of my life may prove. The reader may perhaps say that in attempting to write these reminiscences I have shown that the admonition was thrown away.
(source — Reminiscences of James A. Hamilton)
Hamilton was overjoyed at Philip's performance at his last oration, that he said he was the only one who could have surpassed him;
The eldest child was a son, on whom his hopes rested with a confidence that would not have been disappointed. Distinguished for genius and elevated feeling from his earliest years, this youth had recently graduated at Columbia College. So satisfied was his father with the display of talent in an oration delivered by him at the end of his academic career, that he re-marked: ‘‘I could not have been contented to have been surpassed by any other than my son;’’ and never was he more delighted than with the gratulations which poured in upon him on this occasion.
(source — History of the republic of the United States of America, as traced in the writings of Alexander Hamilton and of his contemporaries, by John Church Hamilton)
He used to play marbles and fly kites with his younger boys;
What a home Hamilton's lovely nature made to all its inmates! By his family he was adored; the humblest member of his household seemed contented with his lot, as he walked forth at early morn to direct their labors with kind greetings and kinder smiles. “Would not this be well?” “Might not this be better?” were the terms of his guidance. [...] Their education now was under his frequent supervision; their course of reading was indicated, and their themes corrected. Every source of usefulness and virtuous pleasure he would cultivate with severer studies—music; (he sang a little)—the graces and the arts; with his younger boys he played marbles and flew kites, making merry pastime.
(source — History of the republic of the United States of America, as traced in the writings of Alexander Hamilton and of his contemporaries, by John Church Hamilton)
Hamilton was too anxious about letting Philip travel on his own, so he barely let him travel for very long and had a friend keep an eye on him;
As my eldest son Philip, who lately graduated, will pass through Providence on his way to Boston, I give him this line barely to introduce him to you; since the time I have prescribed for his return will not permit the stay of more than a day at Providence.
(source — Alexander Hamilton to Jeremiah Olney, [August 12, 1800])
The night before the duel, Hamilton slept besides John C.;
I recall a single incident about it with full clearness. [...] The day before the duel I was sitting in a room, when, at a slight noise, I turned around and saw my father in the doorway, standing silently there and looking at me with a most sweet and beautiful expression of countenance. It was full of tenderness, and without any of the business pre-occupation he sometimes had. “John,” he said, when I had discovered him, “won't you come and sleep with me to-night?” His voice was frank as if he had been my brother instead of my father. That night I went to his bed, and in the morning very early he awakened me, and taking my hands in his palms, all four hands extended, he said and told me to repeat the Lord's Prayer. Seventy-five years have since passed over my head, and I have forgotten many things, but not that tender expression when he stood looking at me in the door nor the prayer we made together the morning before the duel. I do not so well recollect seeing him lie upon his deathbed, though I was there.
(source — Interview with John Church Hamilton, reminiscences about his father)
That's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure there's more.

This apparently has no real Santas in it but I am COMMITTED at this point, have another Holiday Special fully reviewed. Next up is DC Holiday Special '09 #1.
It's always fascinating which characters make it into the specials. Reading these has reminded me that the war stories and the frontier stuff apparently has a bunch of fans - there's frequently Sgt Rock, Enemy Ace, Jonah Hex, etc.
Silent Knight - Batman. I am presuming DickBats chases a crook dressed as Santa and ends up in a warehouse of Santas. He identifies which is the crook, takes him out, and then is invited to what looks like a Santa Christmas Party.
Man of Snow - Superman. A kid makes a snow golem. This is one of the Hanukkah stories. Supes talks to the family and takes the kid flying.
The Flash Before Christmas - Flash. Family time story! Wally is very busy at Christmas with family and hero responsibilities (including fighting Killer Croc with Dick and Donna!) After the fight Dick and Donna twit Wally ('Linda got you a present, remember you have Raven in the Secret Santa') like the good best friends they are. (Also Wally accidentally gives the wrong gifts to Linda and Raven and has to emergency-switch them).
Also delightfully Wally keeps saying 'crud', presumably because he's working to avoid swearing with the twins at home.
The Christmas of Doom - Doom Patrol. Flashback story (Beast Boy is on Doom Patrol). Rita and Gar both hate Christmas. Rita and Steve make the offer to adopt Gar.
Party Gift - Superboy (Actually Match). This is unfortunately Bizarro!Match, who organises the Christmas Party for assorted Rogues Galleries.
Reason for the Season - Martian Manhunter. Another flashback story, it's J'onn as John Jones, police detective. J'onn learning about togetherness on Earth, as opposed to the Mars type.
Angel & the Ape - this has no title, and is just the two soliciting for holiday donations for kids' presents.
A Peace on Earth - Sgt. Rock. Sgt Rock runs into a German soldier on Christmas Eve 1944 (literally). They sit down and drink cognac and smoke cigarettes together, and discuss family and their fathers who both died during WWI. Then they both 'follow orders' to shoot on sight when encountering the enemy...by both firing into the air, before parting.
Stille Nacht - Enemy Ace. General Werner Dietrich wants an air assault on the English and French lines on Christmas Day 1914. Enemy Ace takes his squadron over the lines ready to bomb...only to see the Christmas Truce and refuses to bomb the mixed English-French-German troops singing carols together.
The Hunt for Christmas - B'wana Beast. So this is a bad guy character I didn't even know existed, who has been dead since 1992, and is an avatar of the Red (except he got resurrected in n52 because of course he did). That out of the way - our man here is hunting poachers in Africa and brings supplies stolen from them to a Christian Mission (all set to Light Shining out of Darkness by William Cowper).
Look. Decisions were made here. I really want to know who pitched this, and who approved it. The writer is Beau Smith, whose other writing credits include a lot of Guy Gardner: Warrior, and being co-writer on the Batman-Wildcat (which I adore for its 90sness) and Catwoman-Wildcat minis.
Home for Christmas - Captain Marvel. Billy is fighting Ibac and they realise they've knocked down a homeless shelter. Both having connections (Ibac's had a friend on the street; Billy's been homeless), Billy insists they need to rebuild the shelter, after which they agree to stop the fight for Christmas.
Unbearable Loss - Deadman. Boston saves a suicide jumper - Scarecrow's mother.
A Night Before Christmas Story - Red Tornado. Reddy is trying to find a present for Traya that is the IT gift that year, and is horrified by the venality of man when it comes to competing to get a low stocked toy.
He does manage to get the toy, but realises as Traya comes to cuddle in bed on Christmas morning the real present is family.
Naughty or Nice - Huntress. Helena stops a shop robbery, and contemplates what makes someone good deep inside.
Seeing the Light - Ragman. The OTHER Hanukkah story this issue, retelling the story.
Auld Lang Syne - Adam Strange. Adam's trying to get home for New Year's Eve but fighting crime keeps interfering.

"The line between a Clipping. and Slayer gig is tighter than you'd think."
Daveed Diggs' alt hip hop group challenge notions of heaviness at Roadburn Festival 2024 - Clipping. show why hip hop's more extreme edges should be more embraced by the alternative scene
Hip hop might not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to Roadburn Festival, but the Dutch event has quietly embraced the genre's more alternative, boundary-pushing elements in recent years. In that sense, Clipping. are a perfect booking for the festival, the trio - made up of rapper Daveed Diggs and producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes - delighting in a sense of abjection that lets them sit comfortably alongside previous Roadburn bookings like Moor Mother, Dälek and Backxwash.
But while Clipping. share an affinity for massive, mechanised beats and liberal application of low-end, they boast something of a secret weapon in Diggs. A Tony-award winning actor, Diggs has an undeniable star quality that shines throughout the performance, bringing a sense of charisma and theatricality which elevates the group's two sets over the festival.
“Lets do some scary shit,” Diggs declares and sure enough the group's first set - to a packed Main Stage on Thursday - kicks off with Nothing Is Safe. Built around a sample of John Carpenter's Halloween, the track is a perfect primer to the group's horrorcore sensibilities, explored directly elsewhere with the Candyman referencing Say The Name but ever-present, hackle-raising bass providing a springboard for Diggs' flow, which ranges from a steady trickle on tracks like Bout That to all-out rapid overflow on Taking Off.
Where on record the group delight in lurking in the spaces between minimalist beats, live they create a constant sense of menace, low-end grumbling and lurching from shadows while beats feel like they grow ever-more claustrophobic. For all of their horror sensibilities, Clipping. also have massive hooks that seize the audience like a vice, tracks like Check The Lock and Shooter tapping into almost mainstream territories with rhythmic, .
The group also have something special in mind for their Roadburn appearances. "Fair warning: this is going to fuck you up," Diggs teases, before introducing R&B singer Counterfeit Madison as a special guest, adding a whole new dimension to their sound. Appearing in both sets, Madison contributes a Nina Simone-like soulful, deep vocal to the set that provides an emotional, cathartic release against the hissing, clanging beats, first on All In Your Head (the 2019 track that first brought her together with the group), but then on subsequent songs across the set as she adds entirely new textures like gospel (Story 5), pop (Enlacing) and delta blues (Long Way Away).
Though Madison guests in both sets, overlap is minimal. The pitch-black interior of The Terminal for the group's second appearance might be better suited for their artistic expression of darkness, but the second set arguably feels more like a party. Club Down is a dancefloor banger by Clipping. standards and the sight of members of crowd shouting "gangster shit" feels like a cultural coup that cements the alternative sphere's adoption of hip hop, There's still fangs to their delivery, however; Pain Everyday makes use of skittering electronica that feels like bugs buzzing across the skin, while Body For The Pile makes exceptional use of violent, dark imagery.
In fully embracing lyrical narratives of violence, abject horror and societal decay, the line between a Clipping. and Slayer gig is tighter than you'd think. The frantic breakout of a song like Wriggle offers an altogether different vision of thrash, while the intense rhythmic pulse of Body & Blood could be employed just as effectively by anyone from Ministry to Swans, an implacable industrial press. Even in a weekend that presents the powerful doom intensity of Khanate, howling sludge-noise of Couch Slut and technical death metal prowess of Blood Incantation, Clipping. offer an alternative vision of extremity that proves heaviness isn't the purview of metal alone.

The Vaulties | Day 3: OCs who Owned Me
William John Devlin — Look if I had to pick a favorite out of my legacy/Victorian kiddos, it’s this boy. I love him so much. William is a bastard, in the illegitimate sense and he’s got a lot of issues tied to that. He’s an artist, but doesn’t see himself as one until he’s in his 30s. He rarely lets anyone see how the world has beaten him down and isn’t always kind to himself.
Sara Ailis O’Donnell — As one of the OGs, Sara has a special place in my heart. The third quadruplet, Sara is also the most compassionate. She’s always got a piece of kindness for nearly everybody. She’s soft and kind and possibly their personification of the cinnamon roll character. She’s been in love with Barnaby since her sixth year and there’s never been anyone else, which she knows is so rare.
Conor Lorcan O’Donnell — As another one of the OGs, Conor also has a very special place in my heart. The fourth quadruplet, Conor is the quietest. He’s got so much going on in his head but a combination of a reserved nature and a stutter make it hard for him to share. He’s also the first kid in the HPHM crew to master non-verbal magic… much to a lot of people’s surprise. Conor is used to being underestimated because so many in the wizarding world assume that his stutter means that his intelligence is low. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Conor is extremely intelligent and goes on to become an architect, studying under muggle guidance.
Camila Ines Valdez Santiago — She’s been on my mind a lot recently. A Slytherin in the same year as Harry Potter himself, Camila is ready to fight about half of the people in her year… mostly Malfoy. She cannot stand his smug little face and attitude. But as the astronomy professor during the magic awakened era, Camila is quite a fair professor, extending gratitude to all pretty much all of her students.
Luke Percival Battersea — The newest kid on the list, Luke has a lot of stuff going on and a fascinating story. The sole survivor of a dark wizard attack, Luke’s determined to figure why exactly his family was targeted. He’s also halfway in love with Sophie Pembroke by the end of their fifth year. Star Wars nerd. Sports fan. Seeker.
Declan Ryan O’Donnell-Lee — Sara’s eldest son with her husband, Barnaby, Declan is such a great edition. He’s under the impression that because his life is so good, he’s not allowed to struggle. He often pushes aside his own issues because he doesn’t think they’re worthy of feeling because other people have it worse, because he doesn’t think his issues are legitimate. The only place he feels fully comfortable is the quidditch pitch, but even then his issues with feeling valued flare up.
Honorable Mentions: The other Lynch-O’Donnells (Tadhg, Cillian, Aisling, Ryan, Cara, & Orla), Max Pembroke, Nate MacKade, Edmund Kennedy, Colm O’Shea, Rory O’Neill

Its muscles were more defined than the Gore as it wore a dark leather jacket as it had brown skin around his body and had bits of red around his chest and stomach, as it had long flowing dark hair with red eyes. It had a black tank top and black leather pants with combat boots.) (Based on: The Undertaker, Mark William.)

I was tagged by @cparti-mkiki to share a few albums close to my heart (I am not sure if it has to be four exactly which is why I included six) so here they are, in no particular order, and with a brief personal note/sales pitch:
La traverse miraculeuse (Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer & La Nef, 2008): with my profile picture, some naval-flavoured music was to be expected, right? Particular favourites include their bilingual take on the song Le combat de la Danaé, a French ship captured when outnumbered three to one by the Royal Navy in 1759 which proceded to serve as HMS Danae until 1771, and the classic Dans les prisons de Nantes.
Dark Cloud. Es geht ein dunkle Wolk herein. Lieder aus der Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges (1618-1648) (The Playfords, 2019): What it says on the tin. Songs of the Thirty Years' War, sometimes arranged traditionally, sometimes with a playfully modern twist. I am particularly fond of Es ist ein Schnitter heißt der Tod (There Is a Reaper Called Death), and Mit Lust von wenig Tagen (With the Delight of but Few Days) which you'll find, was a 'cover' of an extant song about some chap called William who really liked the colour orange and didn't talk very much apparently, has no business whatsoever being so catchy.
The Mad Lover - Sonatas, Suites, Fantasias & various Bizzarie from 17th-Century England (Théotime Langlois de Swarte & Thomas Dunford, 2020): I got a ticket to see them perform live with music from the album this summer, not really knowing anything besides that a) the tickets were criminally cheap and b) they would play baroque music from England in a historical palace. Not only can these men play their instruments, and play them well, but their genuine interactions with the audience and excitedly explaining their craft and thoughts on the pieces added to the enchanting music. By the third encore, everyone was singing along to Langlois playing Yesterday by the Beatles on his 360-year-old violin. I have to say, never felt an evening more authentically baroque to me. I highly recommend listening to the entire album in order (and of course seeing Langlois and Dunford perform live, if you can), but in case you want a brief taste, take Nicola Matteis Jr: Fantasia in A Minor.
Plain and Simple (The Dubliners, 1973). I grew up listenting to this album and don't recall a time when I didn't know who the Dubliners were (which may have had to do with the place I lived in at the time) and it doubtlessly impacted my interest in the Irish struggle for independence on account of several of the songs on it. An absolute gem is the uniquely-arranged The Jail of Cluain Meala, an 1820s song about an incarcerated Whiteboy (a secret late 18th century organisation whose aim was to protect the rights of tenant farmers, and whose name derived from the white clothing donned for their night-time raids) sung by the great Luke Kelly and accompanied by a harpsichord.
Dearest Enemy. An American Musical Comedy (Orchestra of Ireland et. al., recorded 2013): Because this is Tumblr, here's my favourite musical. First performed on Broadway in 1925, it's as cheesy an enemies-to-lovers why-is-he-so-hot-when-I-actually-hate-him story as one could imagine, but loosely based on historical events and with many a little historical squint-or-you'll-miss-it Easter egg to spice up the, following a rocky start, rather touchingly narrated love story of Betsy and Sir John that does not ignore their starkly contrasting political views. I would love to see a stage adaption- the mix of tunes still reminiscent of the operetta tradition of the 19th century often steeped in 1920s jazz and the 1770s setting would have so much potential. Favourites include Here in My Arms and Full Blown Roses. (And yes, that's John André with a lipstick mark on his cheek on the cover...)
L'Essentiel 1977-2007 (Francis Cabrel, 2007): Brings back all the memories of childhood summers for me. There was Francis Cabrel on in the car travelling to France on golden, endless summer holidays, with La Cabane du Pêcheur and Hors-saison having stuck with me in particular.
I'll tag @benjhawkins, @fleur-de-paris, @defensivelee, @vankeppel, @nordleuchten, @anarchist-mariner, @clove-pinks and @chiropteracupola (no pressure if you don't want to participate, consider it an invitation!) and anyone who would like to join!

In the sky above, the bioraptors grew more agitated; their rasps deepening as they screeched and snipped at each other. Some flying in a hunger fueled craze, bodies colliding into one another.
As terrified the group was, they were doing good, considering. None of them have ever been in this situation before. Enhanced human or not, hybrid or not, this was still jarring for Kiara too. Even with her advantages, and their dislike for her blood, it's still enough to make the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.
She’s also never used her skills in a situation like this. On a hunt, on the job, when under the threat of shady asshole who thinks a woman alone is an easy target, sure. But stranded on a planet and insanely outnumbered? This is all terrifyingly new.
If they’re stuck here long enough, would the creatures try to attack her anyway, out of desperation? How long will her advantage remain so? When would it no longer matter? Kiara knew she could protect herself, but was it enough to help keep the group alive?
The knot growing in her stomach didn’t help her rising anxiety any, but this wasn’t because the creatures above, this was about the two men up ahead, Riddick leading a few paces before Johns. There was a static energetic cord cast between them, like a tight muscle begging for release; pulsing and inflamed, agitated and spikey. It tasted like bitter spice on her tongue and burned in the back of her throat.
Tiredness crept up her body. The lack of sleep almost slowing her down. Kiara pushed through it, keeping her set pace. Dancing on the edge of overstimulation, she continued to rely on her senses to stay alert; actively reading sound, body temperature, proximity.
After taking one more glance at the sky, her eyes moved to Riddick. He was still leading, Johns behind him. Riddick was focused, alert and at the same time he smelled bitter, same as Johns, minus the fear and anxiety. That cord between them thickened by the second. Kiara knew in her gut the tension between them was coming to a head sooner than later.
If only there was a way to stop Johns from digging his own grave, she thought.

Magical Arts: July's Writing Challenge Winner!
This month, we’ll be looking at the magical world under water. Did you know that the world’s longest mountain range is actually in the oceans? In this month’s writing challenge, your task is to describe your scuba driving experience! What sorts of creatures did you encounter? How did the gush of water feel? Learnt anything new about the world under water? Or did you race any fish?
3rd Place: Naudia
It was always the same for the experienced solo diver. An eerie silence, a sudden rush of bubbles, an abrasive plunge into the icy salty water, the unsettling feeling as his body adjusting to the sudden sensation of weightlessness… then silence as a deep, longing serenity would pass as the first few waves shifted aimlessly above his head. It was a peace that could only be found deep within the ocean’s depths. There, alone, his life hung by a narrow string as he floated within the abyss: his life is now dictated by the level of oxygen in his tank, the quality of his gear, and his experience as a scuba diver. Beyond that, John Williams was hopelessly and irrevocably at the knees of the ocean, her currents, and her ever changing moods.
Without further delay, John began his slow descent into the abyss. Deeper and deeper he went, only the noise of his rebreather releasing the occasional bubble from his gear giving him comfort as the world was consumed in stale darkness. The sailors called this region of the Mediterranean, “Death’s Playground” a chasmic sinkhole deep beneath the ocean where life dared not linger, to the local seaside communities, it was known as a place where both man or ship never returned. An anomaly likely made from some ancient meteorite fueled by superstition, he reckoned.
After the third hour of descent, John checked his status on his wristwatch, the numbers glowing giving little comfort. He was already at half a tank and had yet to encounter any fauna, flora, or the bottom of the cavern for that matter. Nothing gave but the unyielding darkness. Despite his years of solo diving, there was an unsettling stillness deep within this darkened abyss, a thickness to which even his flashlights could no longer slice through.
Just as he was about to move to ascend, a faint glow several meters beneath him began to flicker. John narrowed his eyes, checking to make sure his flashlight wasn’t causing the light to play with his vision, yet the pale glow continued, disturbingly growing as it rapidly moved up towards him. An angler fish? Surely he wasn’t deep enough- the thrill-seeker within him wanted to confirm the discovery but another, more gripping sensation, told him to quickly swim away. Pushing both thoughts from his mind, John neither swam to or from the light, the diver instead opting to hover above as he watched the light careen rapidly up to meet him. Maybe he’d catch a glimpse of a fish afterall to disprove the local yokels-
But there was more, a feeling, despite the singular light hurtling towards him, John couldn't suppress the sensation of being watched by something. It felt as if dozens of eyes were now settled on him from all directions. Nervously, he swiveled around, flashing the dim light of his flashlight every which way to catch a glimpse of whatever was unsettling him. As if to answer, a high-pitched screech echoed, followed by a series of clicking noises. John froze in terror. The noises were so unlike anything he had heard before. It was unnatural.
And there was more than one… and they were communicating. Just as the terrifying realization came to him, another high-pitched screech was heard at his left, the noise playing havoc with the sensors on his dive gear. Rapidly, John dashed into action kicking his flippers to ascend, he needed to get away. He reached into his diving vest, desperately extracting his old diving knife and began slashing the water around him wildly for good measure with his other arm. One meter, two meters, he just needed to swim upwards and hopefully he’d escape whatever this was-
A strong tugging sensation at his flipper ceased the diver’s movements. It was too late, John flashed the flickering light of his flashlight towards his feet as four long, bony fingers, covered in blackened skin coiled tightly around his ankle. The glow had caught up with John WIlliams.

now reading/recently read:
(this will totally not be an ongoing feature bc I’ll immediately forget, but at least it seemed fun 2 try)
Master & Commander, Patrick O’Brian -- I own basically the full run of these books in paperback from estate sales alone and I’ve dipped into them here and there (blasphemy, I know) but this is a great audiobook to listen to right after your state accidentally legalizes 5mg THC edibles.
John Le Carre, Adam Sisman -- another audiobook experience, giving me a ton of pleasure but unexpectedly wrenching and difficult.
Careless Love, Peter Guralnik -- the second half of Guralnik’s life of Elvis Presley; very interesting and thorny reading about the complicated life of a deeply weird man. It’s interesting to see how the author uses primary accounts and contemporary documents to build out and complicate a narrative. Screaming about this one to my friends.
Going Dutch: How England Plundered Holland’s Glory, Lisa Jardine -- Reading this is rapidly revealing to me that I know fuck and all about the Glorious Revolution, William & Mary, the Stuarts, or the Hanovers. I also don’t know shit nor dick about the Netherlands. Still enjoyable reading but slow going for my current cognitive state.
Last Call, Elon Green -- I found this book unexpectedly powerful as a depiction of queer middle-age as well as of a community and its members. I’ve been having a sulk about some of the assertions flying around in recent true crime discourse (that true crime writing is inherently critical of the criminal justice system or of the police, or pretenses that all true crime writing centers the experiences of victims) and I appreciated Green’s clear intent to relay the voices and experiences of the murdered men, the ones who survived, and the people who loved them.
Hell House, Richard Matheson  -- Wow, this one is a lot. People weren’t kidding about the heightened sexual elements in this (some of which work for me, some of which don’t) but I really appreciate it as another installment of the Haunted House Trauma Narrative Literary Universe. This book is so weirdly grimy; I’m trying to fill in my understanding of 1970s-1980s horror fiction, but I foresee a lot of pitch-dark sleaze in my future. I regret that this is getting my fanfiction gears turning in a big way.
All The White Spaces, Ally Wilkes -- polar expedition horror about a young trans man in the immediate aftermath of World War One getting mixed up in some serious shit in the Antarctic. I’m not far into this because the MC (through no fault of his own) is really trying my personal “when would Steve Sadjak kill himself to escape the events of this piece of media?” standard. Hyped about it, though.
Next up: The Naive And Sentimental Lover; Wrath Goddess Sing; Vanessa Springora’s Consent; Samuel Redman’s Bone Rooms; and Jane Gaskell’s A Sweet, Sweet Summer (thank you, interlibrary loans)
