When He Sees Me
~When He Sees Me from the Waitress soundtrack but the Sara Bareilles cover~
Author's Note: AH yes, very specific song choice but covers sometimes hit better than the actual version of the song. That's my hot take for the day. Summary: Y/N is set up on a blind date Word Count: 1,267 Warnings: embarrassment? Cole Caufield x fm!reader
Tumblr media
She never thought she would agree to this. Her friend, Penny, had this amazing idea, her words, to set Y/N up on a blind date. As if she would ever be comfortable enough to deal with the concept of randomly meeting up with a stranger.
After her breakup with her boyfriend, several months back, her friends have been dyign for her to get back out there. Seek out someone. She spent the last four years of her life in Montreal.
The city was always her favorite place to visit as a kid. Her father lived in Quebec for the majority of his young life. After he met her mother, he moved to Ottawa with her. That’s where Y/N grew up, but she spent a lot of her childhood visiting her grandparents in Montreal as it was only a couple hours away.
Now, she lives there permanently with her friends she met at university there. She has a great job but according to her friends; she has a social life that is failing miserably.
Which is why she is going on a blind date with someone who she only knows his first name.
Cole.
Cole could be rude to the baristas.
Cole could talk too fast.
Cole could ask personal questions that are way too personal for a first date.
What if he calls the barista by their first name?
There were so many different principles that could make this date go bad. She sat in her car staring into her reflection of her rear view mirror. Is this too much makeup? What if it’s not enough? Her fingers coursed through her hair, adjusting it to be perfect. But what if it was just perfect and now she just ruined it.
She took a deep breath as she stared at the time on her clock. Fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes until it’s socially acceptable to be early.
She took another deep breath as she glanced at the text from Cole saying which coffee shop would be perfect. It was a small cafe that she had gone to many times before. She studied there as well as got all of her work done there as well. They know her. She drops her forehead against the steering wheel as her eyes shut.
The music in the background was comforting for so long until it wasn’t drowning out the nerves rising in her throat.
What if he’s perfect?
What if he’s so perfect she can’t hide how she feels?
What if he’s genuine and kind?
What if he wants to go out again?
She lifted her head from her steering wheel and decided it was the perfect amount of time to leave her car. She took a hold of her small purse and dropped her keys inside of it. She took another shaky breath as she slowly stepped out of her car, shutting the door locking it multiple times before she decided to walk towards the cafe shop.
She ran her hands across the top of her jeans as she walked across the empty street. Her gaze staring towards the window. She squints her eyes slightly at the man sitting beside the window. He was familiar in a way that felt wrong. She continued onto the sidewalk and got closer to the window to see Montreal Canadiens player Cole Caufield sitting in the chair.
Cole.
This is a coincidence. Cole is a popular name. Her blind date wouldn’t be the Habs player who her Montreal native father never shuts up about. Of course not. Her eyes continue looking towards him, she watches his head tilt upward.
Her eyes widened as she quickly hid behind the brick wall beside the coffee shop. Her heart was racing. He saw her, there’s no way. She clenches her jaw as she pulls her phone from her back pocket.
She began dialing Penny, she pulled the phone towards her ear. It only rang twice before Penny picked up. “Cole? It’s not Cole Caufield right? Because the fact that I even think it could be is crazy? Right?”
Penny giggles, “If I told you that it was-”
“How do you even know him?!” she whispered harshly.
“My sister is dating his teammate, you know this,” she said laughing.
Y/N stared blankly at the concrete as her brain wrapped around the fact that Cole Caufield was waiting for her in the cafe. He probably saw her run away from him and hide, not the greatest first impression.
“He knows what you look like, he probably saw you run and hide. You ran and hid, right?” she asked teasingly. Y/N rolled her eyes as she took a deep breath. “Just go in and sit down. If you hate it, you can leave,” Penny said, hanging up the phone.
Y/N held the phone beside her ear for a few beats before she slowly dropped her phone from her ear and shakenly put it into her back pocket. She took a deep breath as she adjusted her top before she began walking towards the coffee shop again.
She looked towards the window where Cole was sitting, a smile planted on his face. He followed her movements into the coffee shop, her cheeks heating up as she clenched her jaw. She swung the door open and a small chim rang as she stepped inside. Her gaze turned towards Cole, he was already standing up to meet her in the middle.
“Y/N?” he asked, still smiling widely. She nodded. “Penny, didn’t tell you it was me did she?” he asked as he pointed towards the long line for coffee.
“How’d you know?” she asked, chuckling.
“I kinda saw you run when you saw me,” he said, fighting off the smile on his lips. Her mouth fell open as her eyes shut.
“I think I may just go, that was-” she said sarcastically as she pointed behind her. He rolled his eyes playfully.
“No, no it was cute,” he mumbled before they shuffled slightly forward in line. She smiled softly as she dropped her gaze.
They were silent for a moment, just taking in each other's presence. It wasn’t as awkward as Y/N pictured it would be. “Why’d you agree to this blind date, which was apparently only blind to me,” she said, chuckling nervously.
He smiled before tilting his head back. “Guhle and Penny were getting on me about how “lonely” I’ve been since my last relationship ended. They told me that Penny has this gorgeous friend who is allegedly going through the same thing,” he explained, his face tilting back and forth as he air quotes around “lonely”. She nodded as a reply.
“I don’t usually go on dates with strangers,” she mumbled as they shuffled towards the counter, they were next in line.
“Me neither, it’s hard,” he mumbles, meeting her gaze. He smiles again. She returns it.
“Why do you keep smiling?” she asked, teasingly. She wants him to continue, it was intoxicating. It was becoming hard to breathe.
“You’re hard not to smile around,” he muttered, his cheeks flushing red, “That was cheesy, wow. Maybe Guhls is right, I'm way out of practice,” he expressed. She giggled as they stepped up to the counter.
“My two favorite regulars, together? I’d never thought I’d see the day,” Justin, the barista said as the pair reached the counter. “Y/N, you want that lavender latte? Cole, the americano?” he asked, pointing between them. Their eyes widened as they looked toward one another, slowly nodding. Cole handed him his card before Y/N could fully react.

The outdated style I dislike most is the decade of the 70s. This home is an example of why. (I bought an 80s house and it was so dated that I couldn't afford to redo it, and that's the problem you have to consider when buying, even if the price is lower.) This one, in Ottawa, Illinois, was built in 1970 & has 4bds, 3ba, $325K.
Tumblr media
Okay, this is just silly. Cut the hedges back, the lions look like they're in giant green butt cracks. Let's go inside- I hope you enjoy this 70s throwback.
Tumblr media
The oval leaded glass door with 2 side lights were the gold standard, as well as the pony wall planter, spindles and red carpet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 70s introduced large stone fireplace walls. In contrast, there was fussy, fancy, metal (or plastic) grill work, as seen in the doorway.
Tumblr media
The 70s changed the color of wood- it became extremely dark, through the magic of Jacobean stain. The style included faux brick (which was not yet perfected and looked so faux), carpeted kitchens and ornate cabinetry with plate rails.
Tumblr media
But the most distinctive feature was the kitchen lamp post. Even if I gutted this kitchen, I would keep that lamp post, b/c it's such a classic. I've even seen them built into the middle of kitchen tables. (Note the faux brick backsplash.)
Tumblr media
Variations of this beloved bedroom set were in so many homes. Even my grandparents had one (and I inherited it). Plus portraits of the children on black velvet.
Tumblr media
Wallpaper, fancy and flocked, even if it didn't match the style of the room.
Tumblr media
There was a Toile Revival, too.
Tumblr media
And, big, dark heavy furniture with fancy foo-foo ruffled fabric or fabric with eyelet borders. Notice the architectural detail of the bed on a platform with a heating vent for practicality.
Tumblr media
This fireplace was redone- they removed the mantle, in favor of a shelf, and framed in the hearth so they could display statuary.
Tumblr media
It was also the advent of the wall-to-wall carpeted bathroom and tub draperies.
Tumblr media
Note that red shag carpeting fades over time, and also pills, balls up, and irretrievably matts down. Check out what looks like a lighted nativity scene in the fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, the manufactured "colonial" creations. Hanging metal fireplaces adorned with eagles and sofas with spindles, pleated skirts, and pastoral or historic Americana scenes. Wherever there was an opening, put up a fancy railing and/or panel.
Tumblr media
What a bonus! A home beauty salon! Also, note the textured paneling and another popular feature- jigsaw cutout wood valances on everything from the kitchen cabinets to windows, to walls. (Also, there's a good example of how red carpet fades, in the corner.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some outer details (note the cutout valance even on the roof of the house).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't expect a farm, but there're definitely barns and a silo on the property.
Tumblr media
3.67 acres of land.

As Canadians wait for the federal government’s announcement on the future of the Greener Home Grant Program, concerns grow as the program phases out in two weeks. “Many of our customers receive 5,000 dollars or more in both federal and provincial rebates. This is a significant funding that will soon no longer be available,” said Brodie Sampson, owner of Nova Heat Pumps and Air Conditioning. Sampson’s team is on the eighth heat pump installation this week, and they are booked solid for the next month and a half. Aside from heating pumps, the money people get can be used for home insulations, windows and doors, and renewable energy system.

for sts, making the drive from michigan to ottawa when the season starts w josh. bailey’s living it up in the back, the tunes are going and the snacks are getting devoured
“just don’t tell your dad,” you whisper as you slip bailey as chip and she happily gobbles it up, giving your cheek a lick before retreating back to her blanket on the backseat. “night bails.”
“did you need anything from inside?” josh opens your door, leaning inside. he reaches his hand in your chip bag and sends you a cheeky grin as you slap it away, “and what are you not telling me?”
“huh?”
“window’s down, babe. you and bailey are scheming something?” there’s a click of the pump signaling the tank was full and he sighs, “we’ll talk about this later.”
he shuts your door and you look back at the dog who’s tail wags at your attention, “we’re in trouble, b.”
josh sighs as he slides into the driver’s seat, patting your thigh, “three more hours.”
“and bailey gets to see her new home!” you cheer and josh smiles. you grab josh’s phone and start scrolling through the music, “no more country. pick something else.”
“taylor?”
“smart man.”

Jack Hughes x Female Reader
This is chapter Two of Four
Can read chapter one here
Warning: Ex, fluff, cursing, Non supportive parents? Let me know if i missed any.
This has been in my draft for a while, I finally finished it.
word count: 1.4k
let me know what you guys think🤍
I just got to my apartment, thankfully I was able to find a beautiful affordable apartment that was fully furnished. It was now 8 p.m. and I was starving so I decided to order some pizza, for how late it was the wait was still 45 minutes.
While I was waiting for my pizza to get here, I took a quick shower since I was just in a plane. I changed into some comfy grey sweatpants and a tight white long sleeve shirt. I threw my hair in a bun I was too exhausted to wash it tonight, so I’ll just do it tomorrow when I wake up.
Once I was ready the I heard a knock on the door, I opened the door I paid the delivery boy and closed the door.
I sat down on my couch and turned on the tv and started to eat. I put on my brother’s hockey game since Ottawa was playing Calgary tonight. They were leading 2-1 in the second period.
I continued watching the game until it was over. Ottawa won 3-1 so I texted my brother to tell him congrats. I threw away the trash and went to bed. I could worry about everything else tomorrow I was too exhausted to worry about anything else right now.
The next morning, I woke up refreshed so I jumped in the shower. Thankfully I still had another two week before class started, I wanted to make sure I could settle in and find my way around the city before I got busy with classes. Once I got out of the shower and got ready for the day, I looked on google to try and find a coffee place that was close since I got in late last night I didn’t have the chance to go get groceries.
I found a place that was only a five-minute walk so I grabbed my purse, jacket and keys and made my way to the coffee shop. I got myself a small breakfast and a cold brew before sitting down at the table next to the window.
New York was beautiful especially during winter, it was snowing today, and it was beautiful. I looked up nearby grocery stores, and once I was done eating, I made my way there, thankfully the grocery store was only 10 minutes from my apartment, so it wasn’t hard walking back.
Once I got back to my apartment, I unloaded my groceries and forgot that I needed to buy some utensils since I had none, I found a store, but it was a little further away, so I ordered an uber.
Thankfully it wasn’t a long drive, once we got to the store, I paid the uber and went inside to do a little shopping. I spend about an hour there before calling another uber to go home. I found everything I needed, I was finally adulting, when I was in Michigan my parents’ house was close enough to campus so I would just drove to campus when I had classes.
The day was coming to an end, so I made myself diner and facetime some family and friends for a while. Then I thought I should facetime Luke and tell him what I did today. Luke has always been like a little brother to me, he can be annoying, but I love him regardless.
“Hey sis, how was your first full day in New York?”
“pretty good, I went and bought groceries and then went to the store to buy some utensils so I could actually make myself some food” I said which made him laugh
“You’re getting old sis” he said which made me gasp
“shut up Luke, I’m only 2 years older than you” he was smiling
“I’m glad you’re happy”
“me too”
“you should really think about telling Jack, he’d be happy to see you”
“Luke…”
“I know you don’t want to see him, but he’s my brother and I know he misses you, he asks about you every time I talk to him”
“If I ever see him around I’ll talk to him, but I really don’t want to have to call him or text him to let him know I’m here”
“fine… I have to go it’s getting late and I’m exhausted, so good night I’ll talk to you later, love you”
“love you too lukey”
He was right it was getting late, so I went to bed happy for a successful first day in New York and excited for another one tomorrow.
Today I was going to go to time square and explore New York. I’ve always dreamed of living in New York and now I’m finally here.
I got ready for the day and ordered an uber. The uber driver got me to time square and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was.
I thanked the driver before he left and I started exploring the city. I found some stores I loved and made my way inside, I might as well shop since I’m here.
I bought a few new pieces of clothing and I didn’t need but they were to cute not to buy, as I made my way out of the last store time square was already packed and I bumped into someone’s chest.
“Dude you really need to start watching where you’re going” some guy said laughing
“Nate shut up it’s not my fault” someone said, and I recognized his voice it was Jack.
I looked up and saw Jack I didn’t think I’d run into him especially in Time Square. He looked at me and I saw him freeze. He was with who I assume are some of his teammates.
“Jack you okay man” who I recognize as PK Subban, Jack snapped out of it making him look at PK then back at me.
“Y/n?” he said in disbelief
“Hey Jack… long time no see” I said shyly
“yeah, no kidding, what are you doing In New York?”
“We’ll let you guys talk, were going to go to Sunglass hut” another one of the guys said before they walked away.
“umm… you want to walk and we can catch up while we do so?” I ask nervously
I didn’t know if he would say yes, and I honestly didn’t know if I was hoping he’d say yes or if he’d say no.
“yeah that sounds good, I can catch up with the guys later.” He said with a small smile
“So what brings you to New York? Are you here with some friends for new years?” he asked curiously
“um… no i’m actually here alone… I finally convince my parents to let me move to New York so I could go to Columbia university.” I said smiling
His eyes widen with a smile making its way on his face.
“Really? That’s amazing you always wanted to go to Columbia” he said happily
“Yeah, I got them to agree so I transferred I got here 2 days ago, I’ve always wanted to live here so I thought I’d explore the city”
“I’m happy for you, it’s about time you follow your dreams. How come you didn’t tell me you were moving here?” he asked lowkey hurt
“honestly I don’t know, we haven’t seen each other in over a year, so I thought maybe you wouldn’t want to know… even though every told me to tell you” I replied
“Of course, I would have wanted to know. You have no idea how much I’ve missed you. You were my girlfriend and best friend, I’ll I’ve ever wanted is for you to be happy” he said which made me smile
I had missed him too; he was my person every time I had good news or bad news, he was the first person I wanted to tell. He’s been in my life since we born, there’s nothing I wouldn’t have done for him and him for me.
“I missed you too” I replied smiling
“Well now that we are close by we can catch up”
“definitely”
We kept walking and talking we stopped at a coffee shop, we sat down and talk for a little while before he got a call.
“I have to go, but you have my number use it” he said smiling
He gave me a hug before leaving. I finished my coffee before deciding it was time to go back to my apartment.
I went to bed happier than ever, I thought I’d be sad to see him again, but I couldn’t be happier.

Did you know a F-104 Starfighter delayed the opening of the Ottawa International Airport when it went supersonic during the opening ceremonies and damaged most of the glass in the airport (including the entire north wall) and damaged ceiling tiles, door, window frames and structural beams.
Funny how every weird shit that happened in the developed world can be traced back to the Starfighter: A japanese porn actor used his personal plane to kamikaze himself into the home of a yakuza? Blame the Starfighter. One of the most successful German WW2 flying aces leaves the Luftwaffe for good? The Starfighter. Canada loses it’s one promising supersonic interceptor design? The Starfighter once again.
Hell, it’s also the reason why Pakistan began to align with China, after discovering the fleet of a dozen aircraft they bought from the US couldn’t be used to fight against their soviet-aligned archenemy India.

"Do You Ride" by Caleb Groh
"No," Murls groaned as Sid emerged from the locker room in his sweats.
"I already said I can't," Sid mumbled around the protein bar lodged between his teeth. Cold water dripped from his sodden hair down the back of his neck, soaking the collar of his baggy t-shirt.
"I worked so hard to get the bouncer to like me," Murls complained, "you were guaranteed an in, man!"
"We'll go out in Ottawa, yeah?"
"That's no fun," Murls said as he followed Sid out of the dry lockers and into the Igloo's concrete hallways. "You're allowed to drink there."
"Funny how that works," Sid rasped around a bite of his protein bar.
"You can't be a goody-two-shoes forever, Crosby," Murls said accusingly as they rounded a corner. "You're young, you've got so much leeway to be stupid that you could bungee jump with it."
"How about I bungee jump with a grip on those big fuckin' balls you've got, trying to get the Goose to go out," Bugsy said from a few paces back.
"You'd call those balls big?" Sid asked just as Murls protested: "Stop trying to make that nickname happen, man, it's not working."
"It works. He has a gold medal. Golden goose."
"A juniors gold medal," Murls scoffed.
"Hey now," Sid began.
"And he's not a fucking bird. Is he laying eggs? No!"
"Talbo calling him Creature isn't much better," Bugsy muttered, but he just jammed his phone into the back pocket of his tight jeans. He was dressed in a uniform Sid had seen on him before: button-down shirt, dark pants, his "nice" sneakers.
"See?" Murls said, turning to Sid. "Bugsy's going out too. You've gotta come."
"Can't," Sid said simply, striding ahead and pushing open the double doors leading into the players' garage. "You boys go have fun."
"We'd have more fun if you loosened up!" Murls called after him, and Sid turned just enough so Murls could see the curl of his smirk.
"Your mom likes me wound up," he said, and Bugsy cackled as the doors swung shut.
The parking garage was quiet.
Sid had stayed late, just like Bugsy and Murls. He had gotten into the habit of haunting the players' areas as long as possible back in Rimouski; once the reporters and fans had departed, once it was just him and the zamboni drivers, it was easier to uncurl his spine in the weights room and go back to being just Sid: unobserved, unreported, unpoliced by the media and refs and older players.
He was still being watched, though.
The Benz sat in its spot right next to the door, its silver paint gleaming in the harsh overhead lights. Its windows and headlights were dark, but the engine hummed.
Another trail of water slid down Sid's neck, icy cold against his suddenly warm skin.
He hurried to the passenger side, as if Bugsy and Murls were going to burst through the doors instead of wandering to get a taxi by an arena side door. The car handle was cold to the touch, and Sid threw his bag and then himself into the vehicle.
"Good game," Mario said.
"Thanks," Sid said in kind as he fumbled for his seatbelt. His hands felt both too cold and too hot, fumbling with the metal. He'd played well. A goal and two assists. It had been a good night.
"I, ah, we missed you out there."
Mario smiled as he turned out from the garage to the street. The streetlights lit his face dramatically as they passed overhead, the bright bursts suddenly making Mario appear younger before plunging him back into darkness.
"Did your appointment go okay?"
Mario's hand slipped from the wheel and onto Sid's knee. Sid's legs had always been huge, but Mario's knee felt big on him anyways.
"Let's save that kind of talk for another day, Sidney."
"Sure," Sid whispered.
He stayed quiet as Mario drove them away from Downtown Pittsburgh, out towards the suburbs, past the exit to Sewickley, and up the dark road that led to a place only the two of them knew.

The Petwawa River (Pt. 1 Petawawa Guarrison)
Tumblr media
The 3RCR, a regiment at Petawawa, headquaters
This is the first thread on this blog about my Top Ten places I visited where I write to you, readers, about my experiences, enjoy! As a part of an opportunity I have received this summer from army cadets, I have had the chance to visit the magnificent Petawawa river. The Petawawa river is located in the  northern part of Algonquin park next to the city of Petawawa which is around 2 hours from Ottawa. Throughout this experience, I’ve had the chance to stay at the Petawawa Garrison, bike from the base to the river and canoe the whole length of the river with rapids while camping for 10 days. On this blog, I will cover my stay at the Petawawa garrison.
Tumblr media
Rooms in the shacks!
My trip to Petawawa started when me and 35 other cadets and 7 adult staff arrived to stay at the barracks in the city’s military base where we stayed to practice canoeing through rapids. The shacks, as the military personnel call them, were very spacious. They weren’t necessarily cozy, but they were comfortable as they contained 4 huge beds for 4 people per room with 2 windows, 4 wardrobes and 4 bed stands with outlets. Bathrooms were located on the other side of the corridor and were very well kept. My only complaint is that there is not much privacy because the bathroom door was always open and everything was visible from the corridor.
Tumblr media
The mess hall at the Petawawa Garrison.
Tumblr media
The mess hall at the garrison was just fantastic. The military really knows how to feed their members because it always raises morale to go to the mess hall due to the food being always great. The best meal was supper where they fed meals like lamb chops in a sauce or steaks with cranberries which was something to look forward to at the end of the day. In addition to that, there were always different types of desserts, a salad bar and juice dispensers. As a part of my stay in the Petawawa Garrison, me and the rest of the group biked to the fast moving Petawawa river to practice how to canoe through rapids and how to swim through them if the canoe tipped over. It was fun because I learned interesting different canoestrokes to use through fast moving water and what swim position to adopt if a canoe tips in that water.
This is me swimming in the river!
Stay tuned for the second part of this blog next week when I’m going to cover the trip along the whole Petawawa river.

Any headcanons about how many homes America and Canada have?
Yes! They have many homes.
⭐ America ⭐
In New York City, America spent decades jumping from place to place. As the city grew, he moved from a house in Manhattan, to a Brooklyn apartment, to a flat in Queens, etc. Now, despite his best efforts, his current apartment is just a box with an AC unit sticking out the window. He wishes he could have a nicer place in NYC, but the market is too hot even for him.
In Los Angeles, he managed to snag a gorgeous Santa Monica house in the early Hollywood days before prices exploded into the stratosphere. Just a short walk to the Pacific ocean, he never sold it and it’s worth its weight in gold by now.
His spot in Washington D.C. is the one he most uses; a stately, historical home that would probably be turned into a small museum if he ever decides to sell it (but he never will). Sometimes, the place can get a bit messy, with papers, file folders, and take-out containers scattered about, but he’ll tidy up when company is coming.
A farm in Ohio that has seen better days. In the early 20th century, he used the barn as a workshop to tinker with automobiles and flying machines. As a result, the barn is quite damaged, but America won’t repair it. He thinks the oil stains “add character”.
A lively hotel in Louisiana with a restaurant on the first floor. Yes, he owns the whole thing. It’s been managed by humans for generations within the same family. They cook massive Creole feasts whenever America drops by.
America doesn’t seek solitude often, but when he does, he goes to his mountain home in Colorado.
He stubbornly hangs onto his Texas ranch even though he doesn't raise cattle anymore.
Once he owned a beachfront property in Florida, but sold it after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, his childhood home in Boston caught fire after the Revolution and burnt down. The land it was on is now a popular public park with swing sets, monkey bars, and a huge curly slide. Many local children say it’s their favourite park in the city.
There are many more, of course, but those are some of his standout homes.
🍁 Canada 🍁
Of all his homes, Canada stays at his Ottawa house most often. The backyard is filled with a rainbow of tulips and it’s within cycling distance to Parliament Hill. He keeps several pairs of ice skates for himself and whoever visits during the winter, so they can go skating over the frozen Rideau Canal.
Canada’s Toronto flat is the most modern-looking of his dwellings, but that isn’t saying much. It’s an industrial loft with mismatched furniture still stuck in the 1980s. It really isn’t his favourite place, but he likes the view of the skyline at sunset.
One of his childhood homes is still standing; a humble, stonework Montreal house. It’s been restored by historical societies; fresh paint on the door, a tidy lawn, and black soot swept away. He made an arrangement to lease it as a museum, but has the opportunity to return and stay there whenever he chooses.
There’s a ramshackle log cabin he built himself in Algonquin park, many years before it was designated as parkland. To quote my NedCan fic: “... a stone base decorated in moss. Turn-of-the-century windows and an amber-stained porch pleasantly frame the main door, while the modernized roof and chimney stack create a mishmash of different eras... like a favourite worn blanket; too beloved to be discarded, and so instead is repeatedly patched.”
On the east coast, he has a home in Halifax proper. Sadly, his original was destroyed in the Halifax Explosion and was rebuilt to the standards of the 1920s. He misses his older house, because it was where Scotland would visit during his childhood.
In St. John’s, he has a very colourful building, painted bright red with white window frames and small gardens in both the front and back.
A simple, suburban bungalow in Red Deer, Alberta. Perfect for business and relaxation, because it’s halfway between both Edmonton and Calgary and keeps the Rocky Mountains within reach. Piles of hiking gear are stored in the attic, basement, and the garage. When he can spare the time, he’ll drive out to the Rockies for weeks of camping, climbing, hiking, or skiing.
His British Columbia home is surrounded by old-growth trees.
Overall, Canada tries to have at least one home in each of his provinces and territories. If, at the time of travel, he doesn’t, he'll try to lodge in a wildlife research centre. The scientists, who usually work for the government, don’t mind his presence at all.
Thank you for the ask!! 💜

Hey Jazz, didn't realize you were one of the people suffering from the run off smoke. I think you must have heard most advice about staying safe by now but just in case: if you still have face masks those help filter smoke, using tissue paper or napkins under add a little more protection. Wet rags help filter some smoke particles too (around door/window cracks). Hope things get better soon for you all. -fan familiar with the unease that comes from seeing smoke filled skies aka a californian.
Yeah it’s pretty disconcerting! Wildfires up north aren’t uncommon, but this is the first time I can ever remember smelling the smoke and seeing this much haze so far south. I’m not in the absolute worst of it in Quebec or Ottawa, but it’s not great here and supposed to get worse. So thank you for the advice!

Top Windshield Repair Aftercare Tips
Whether you’re getting a windshield repair or replacing it, it’s important to follow certain aftercare precautions to ensure your vehicle stays safe and secure. This includes making sure your windshield is properly repaired.
Tumblr media
1. Wait to Drive the Car - The seal on your windshield repair is still in the process of drying, and driving it too soon can put your safety at risk. The adhesive used to keep the glass securely in place needs time to set and dry properly, so leave your vehicle to sit for a few hours after you get it back from the shop.
2. Keep the Area Clear - Avoid any items that could potentially push up against or adhere to your windshield during this period of time, such as sunshades or decorations.
3. Keep the side window open - To prevent leaks, leave one of your side windows opened slightly for at least the first day after you get your windshield repaired.
4. Do Not Remove the Retention Tape – The retention tape that holds your windshield moldings in place helps to protect the seal and curing process.
5. Do not Slam Your Doors - When your car door is closed, it can create a lot of pressure and stress on your windshield. This can wreak havoc on the seal and make it difficult to cure properly.
The above tips are simple to follow, and they’ll help to protect your windshield for years to come. But, if you need to replace your windshield or have it repaired, be sure to contact a professional windshield repair team for the best results.
Contact Auto Glass Ottawa, windshield repair experts in Ottawa today for more details.

Echoes of our Past | February 3rd 1923
Tumblr media
Librarian Richard Forrest takes a look at news highlights published in The Echo 100 years ago this week.
Attack at Dunkettle During the night there was an attack on the military guard at Dunkettle Station, three miles east of the city. It was beaten off without much difficulty. During the skirmish a bullet entered the signal cabin through a window and damaged some instruments. The wires on the line to Youghal were also cut during the night and, as a result, the down trains this morning were delayed for about three hours.
Cork District Sessions
This morning, before Mr. D.B. Sullivan B.L. Denis Leary, 4 James Street, was charged with having been drunk and disorderly in Parnell Place last night. The disorderly conduct was that he made use of bad language outside a public house door. Defendant said he had come out of hospital only that day and that his head “was not very good”. Cornelius Cooney, an ex-soldier, was charged by Patrolman Moore with having been drunk and incapable on Half Moon Street at 1 a.m. this morning. Cooney said he had been wounded in the head and that whenever he took a pint or two he staggered. Defendant was lying on the footpath asleep. Both defendants paid fines at once and were discharged.
A Deserving Charity
A appeal will be held next Sunday for St. Mary Magdalen’s charity and a charity sermon will be preached at the North Cathedral by the Rev. J. Aherne. This charity is worthy of the best support of the citizens. Collections will be held in all churches. It is to be hoped that a generous response will be forthcoming. There are over a hundred penitents to be maintained and funds are very scarce. Many subscriptions will be needed if it is to continue its magnificent work.
 Joint Hospitals Board
Three tenders were received for the supply of a motor van. The lowest was that of W.J. Thompson, Mallow for £179 and this was accepted. The others were £188 and £201. A letter was read from the County Technical Committee asking the Board that when it makes appointments in cases where Irish is essential to accept the certificate awarded by them. The application was accepted. On the motion of Mr. O’Connell T.C., seconded by Mr. Golden (Rural District Council), the salary of Miss O’Doherty was increased by £15 a year.
Cork I.D.A. Meeting
Arising out of communication with the Marine Investigation Department, the Secretary informed the meeting that the butter on board the ss. Duchess branded “Lismore Castle Brand” was tested by experts and found to be Irish. As its origin was in dispute the Secretary had communicated with Paxman & Co., Lismore and received the following response, “We received your letter of the 24th and in reply beg to inform you that the 24 keels of butter which were shipped from Liverpool on board the ss. Duchess were Irish butter packed by ourselves. They were in storage in Bootle Cold Stores and we are getting them back for our Irish trade. We have no agent in Liverpool”. In view of the fact that Paxman’s were obliged to ship their butter to Liverpool for cold storage purposes, it was decided to get in touch with the company again and recommend the facilities offered in Cork by the Cork Pure Ice Warehousing and Cold Storage Co.

News from Around the World
112 bodies have been recovered so far from the Heinitz Pit near Beuthen, Germany after a violent explosion last Wednesday. It is feared there are still 28 bodies in the mine. Three earthquake tremors have been recorded near Ottawa. The epicentre being 6.5 kilometres away. The third was the most severe and occurred around midnight. There was some excitement in the South African Union House of Assembly caused by the close voting on the Women’s Enfranchisement Bill. It was defeated by 56 votes to 55. Some blame a woman in the gallery for shouting at the Prime Minister. Lord Carnarvon has said at Luxor that the “Ushahtl”, or small image of King Tuttankhamen is probably the finest piece that the sepulchre contains. A dredger turned turtle in the river Humber shortly after leaving the dock at Hull yesterday morning resulting in the loss of six lives.
An Arcadian Cork Ballroom
On a glorious night of light and melody during the week it was my good fortune to breathe the Arcadian atmosphere of a Cork ballroom. The laughter, the beauty, the inspiration. The sylphs who hither and thither floated. All were there. Colour and beauty of form abounded, and the world called Earth seemed far away. The soft, close-clinging garments that wrapped those swaying, slow moving figures attracted only by the beauty of their wearer. The brilliance that shone on hair and throat and delicately draped arm drew only admiration unalloyed. Beneath those bright lights, within the magic region of that sweet music, only one thought was shared, only one aspiration actuated - beauty, happiness. No queryings there concerning wealth or birth. No contemplation upon rank, station, affluence or influence. One objective guided. One inspiration sufficed. Unity of effort completed the perfect whole: “Let joy be unconfined”, and joy was the portion of all.
St. Finbarrs vs. St. Marys
The clash between St. Finbarr’s and St. Mary’s in the Poor Children’s Excursion Fund last Sunday was a strenuous contest throughout. The first half was altogether in the champion’s favour but the second balanced out. St. Mary’s is now a combination of St. Mary’s and Fair Hill players and they finally pulled together in that half though their scoring line let them down rather badly. With more practice and polish the amalgamation will take some beating. The full-time whistle left the Barrs winners by a comfortable margin. W. Aherne, Cork County Board, acted as referee and gave general satisfaction.

“Do you know you're pretty”  and “kiss me please!” w josh norris please!
combined w/ "I hope that in every life, you are there with me" with norris please <3
warnings: drunk josh, mentions of bars/alcohol
“um, is this y/n?”
“who is this?” you grumble at the unfamiliar voice on the other end of the phone. you push yourself up to look at the clock on the bedside table and you squint as you try and make out the other numbers, just past two. you let yourself fall back into your pillow when the other person doesn’t respond, “i’m hanging up now-”
“no, no, no, please don’t!” the voice turns frantic and you raise an eyebrow, “my name is brady. i’m a friend of josh’s-”
“is he okay?” dread suddenly fills your stomach because no good phone calls take place this late in the night. “let me talk to him.”
there’s a crash on the other end and brady groans, “he’s fine, well, as fine as you can be after having the highest tab at the end of the night. look, i’m sorry to bother you, but he is the furthest thing from sober right now. i was trying to get him in an uber back to his place, but he refused and said he would only go home with you.”
you sit up fully then, turning to stare out of the window that overlooked the ottawa skyline as brady continued,
“look we don’t know each other, but he isn’t going anywhere that you’re not, i know that much. if you don’t want to come and get him, can you at least help me trick him into thinking that he’s going to see you?”
“no, i- i’ll come and get him. what bar are you at?” you can vaguely hear josh in the background yelling about something as brady rambles off an address and you thank him, promising that you’re on your way. you scramble to put on your shoes and grab your keys, practically flying out of the door of the apartment.
when you get to the outside of the bar, you’re stopped by a burly man with a security badge velcroed to his sleeve, “you already missed last call. sorry.”
“i’m not here to drink. i’m here to-”
“y/n?” you look past the man’s broad shoulders and find an unfamiliar face staring at you. “let her in, joe. she’s good.”
after an uncertain glance between you and who you can only assume is brady, the man lets you pass through the doorway. brady nods his head over to a corner where a few senators are still lingering and when you don’t spot the only one you really knew, you make a face, “where-”
“baby!” josh’s cheerful voice breaks through the crowd and draws the attention of the lingering patrons of the bar, his teammates included who look at you with curiosity as he throws his arms around you. you stumble backward at the sudden impact of his weight and he is quick to apologize, “‘m sorry.”
“you’re good, j. do you have everything? keys, phone, wallet?” you mumble, looking around for anything of his that might look familiar. he presses his lips to your head sloppily, a silent confirmation, and you nod, “great. we’re going back to my place, okay?”
“‘kay,” he says, keeping his arm slung over your shoulder as he leads you toward the exit. you turn around and mouth your thanks to brady and he sends you a thumbs up just as you disappear down the steps and past joe, “bye joe. love ya man.”
“alright, norris. hope to see you back on the ice soon.”
“did you walk here?” josh mumbles as you head in the direction of your apartment. you dig your fingers into his side, pulling him closer as he stumbles, “that’s not safe.”
“it’s three blocks, josh, and i can handle myself,” you roll your eyes as you come to a stop at a crosswalk.
“do you know you’re pretty?” you look at him to find him already staring at you with a slight grin, “‘m so lucky. all the boys are gonna be jealous of me.”
a car rolls through just as the light signal changes for you to cross and you shake your head, “why would they be jealous?”
“because you’re so- can i do the numbers?” he looks at you with a pout on his lips that you can’t say no to, but you do have to guide his hand towards the right buttons. as you stumble inside, josh continues, “you’re smart, you’re pretty, you’re funny, you take me to doctor’s appointments-”
you snort as you corral him into the elevator, “that’s criteria?”
“if you’re gonna be in it for the long run, yeah,” he pauses as he leans his head back against the wall as you start to ascend, “i hope that you are, y’know? i hope that in every life, you’re there with me.”
you pat his stomach gently, unsure of what to say. it had only been two months of doing whatever the hell you were doing and here you were, in the elevator of your apartment building at damn near three in the morning with him confessing to you that he wanted you with him for the long run, in every life apparently.
all the while he was the one who had been refusing to put a label on this, this thing that you two had.
after his little confession, he goes easily when you lead him down the hall. he barely makes it through the door before he all but faceplants on the couch, curling around one of the pillows and closing his eyes. you sigh as you grab a blanket, tossing it over his body and just as you’re about to retire back to your room, a hand wraps around your wrist.
“wait,” he mumbles, “kiss me, please.”
“you’re lucky that you’re cute,” you sigh before leaning down, pressing a quick kiss to his lips. “good night, josh.”
the only response you get is a deep breath as he rolls over, attempting to sink further into the couch. as you crawl into your bed, you can hear his muffled snores through the crack you had left in the door and you roll your eyes. as you try to drift off, his words replay in your head and you can’t help but to smile.
you were definitely going to have to bring it up at some point, but maybe not while he was nursing a massive hangover.
send in your request for spring fling!
