Everyday consumers are inundated with promises from emerging technologies to help make our lives easier—Amazon can deliver almost anything, Uber has revolutionized local travel, and Open Table has taken the headache out of finding dinner reservations on a busy Saturday night. Most consumers embrace the convenience of these technologies without much thought to the consequences of the information they are sharing and who has access to it. We trust firms to handle our private information with the utmost care and respect for privacy…but what happens when that is not the case? Privacy International, a UK advocacy group, shared a report this week which detailed period and fertility tracking apps, most notably Maya and MIA, have been sharing a wide range of highly personal and sensitive information with, of course, Facebook…

Millions of women around the world have embraced these apps to help track their menstrual cycles and monthly fertility windows. For the app to provide the most accurate results for its user, it relies on women to input a wide variety of personal data including, daily mood, sexual activity, contraception usage, and symptoms such as tiredness and even acne breakouts. Thanks to Facebook’s Software Development Kits (SDK), a product which allows app developers to track analytics and monetize their apps through Facebook’s advertising networks, the information inputted by its female customers was shared directly with the social media juggernaut for strategically ad targeting. The major criticism lies in the fact these apps were not forthcoming with their use of the SDK and certain customer information was shared with Facebook before users even had an opportunity to review and agree to the apps “terms and conditions.”

Once again, the world’s largest social media platform with 1.2 billion daily users, finds itself in the middle of a user privacy debacle. After last year’s Cambridge Analytics scandal along with other accounts of misinformation, allowance of fake accounts, and consumer breaches of trust, Facebook has attempted to take steps in better protecting its users’ data. In a statement responding to the Privacy International report Facebook offered:

Its terms of service prohibit app developers from sharing health or sensitive data, and that it has been in contact with Maya and MIA to notify them of a possible violation of those terms. We have systems in place to detect and delete certain types of data such as SSN, passwords, and other types of personal data. We have begun looking at ways to improve our system and products to detect and filter out more potentially sensitive data…

With apps not being held to the same standards as the health care industry in terms of patient/user privacy, serious concerns have been raised over who ultimately has access to this type of data and the oversight of properly securing it.

It’s not just advertisers who’d love to get their hands on this type of medical data, but employers and insurance companies have aggressively pushed to collect more and more data on their employees under the guise of corporate wellness. Imagine if a potential employer had access to medical information for job candidate which confirmed she was actively trying to get pregnant, how many firms would not hire her to avoid the complexities of having an employee on maternity leave within her first year at the firm…? Access to this type of data would allow insurance companies to discriminate against certain women by charging higher premiums for those most likely to conceive to offset the costs associated with pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum care.

Customers have placed trust in apps like Maya and MIA with their personal health information and fully expected it to be protected and secured. In today’s data-driven society, firms go through great length to collect all available data on their customers to gain awareness and achieve a competitive advantage. Is it even reasonable for consumers to have expectations of privacy or do companies need to step up their data discretion game and start showing more respect towards their customers?

Sparkster source code review

Sparkster has finally opened its code repositories to the public, and as the project has been somewhat in the centre of discussion in the crypto community, as well as marketed by one of the high profile crypto influencers, we have been quite curious to see the result of their efforts.

The fundamental idea of the project is to provide a high-throughput decentralized cloud computing platform, with software developer kit (SDK) on top with no requirement for programming expertise (coding is supposed to be done in plain English). The idea of plain English coding is far from new and has been emerging more than a few times over the years, but never gotten any widespread traction. The reason in our opinion is that professional developers are not drawn to simplified drag & drop plain language programming interfaces, and non-developers (which is one of the potential target groups for Sparkster) are, well, most probably just not interested in software development altogether.

However the focus of this article is not to scrutinize the use case scenarios suggested by Sparkster (which do raise some question marks) but rather to take a deep look into the code they have produced. With a team counting 14 software developers and quite a bit of runway passed since their ICO in July 2018, our expectations are high.

Non-technical readers are advised to skip to the end for conclusions.

Source code review Sparkster initially published four public repositories in their github (of which one (Sparkster) was empty). We noticed a lack of commit history which we assume is due to a transfer of the repos from a private development environment into github. Three of the above repositories were later combined into a single one containing subfolders for each system element.

The first impression from browsing the repositories is decent after recent cleanups by the team. Readme has been added to the main repository with information on the system itself and installation instructions (Windows x64 only, no Linux build is available yet)

However, we see no copyright notes anywhere in the code developed by Sparkster, which is quite unusual for an open source project released to the public.

Below is a walk-thru of the three relevant folders containing main system components under the Decentralized-Cloud repository and a summary of our impression.

Master-Node folder The source code is written in C++. Everything we see is very basic. In total there are is not a lot of unique code (we expected much more given the development time spent) and a lot of the recently added code is GNU/forks from other projects (all according to the copyright notes for these parts).

An interesting part is, that if this master node spawned the compute node for this transaction, the master node will request the compute node to commit the transaction. The master nodes takes the control over more or less all communication to stakeholders such as clients. The master node will send a transaction to 20 other master nodes.

The lock mechanism during voting is standard: nodes booting in the middle of voting are locked and cannot participate to avoid incorrect results.

We cannot see anything in the code that differentiates the node and makes it special in any way, i.e. this is blockchain 101.

Compute-Node folder All source files sum up to a very limited amount of code. As the master node takes over a lot of control, the compute node focuses on the real work. A minimalistic code is generally recommended in a concept like this, but this is far less than expected.

We found the “gossip” to 21 master nodes before the memory gets erased and the compute node falls back to listen mode.

The concept of 21 master nodes is defined in the block producer. Every hour a new set of 21 master nodes become the master node m21.

The compute node is somewhat the heart of the project but is yet again standard without any features giving it high performance capability.

Storage-Node folder The source code is again very basic. Apart from this, the code is still at an experimental stage with e.g. buffer overflow disabling being utilized, something that should not be present at this stage of development.

Overall the storage uses json requests and supports/uses the IPFS (InterPlanetary File System). IPFS is an open source project and used for storing and sharing hypermedia in a distributed file system. The storage node not only handles the storage of data, it also responds to some client filter requests.

Conclusion In total Sparkster has produced a limited amount of very basic code, with a team of 14 developers at their disposal. As their announcement suggests that this is the complete code for their cloud platform mainnet, we must assume that the productivity of the team has been quite low over the months since funds were raised, since none of the envisioned features for high performance are yet implemented.

The current repository is not on par with standards for a mainnet release and raises some serious question marks about the intention of the project altogether. The impression is that the team has taken a very basic approach and attempted to use short cuts in order to keep their timelines towards the community, rather than develop something that is actually unique and useful. This is further emphasized by the fact that the Sparkster website and blockchain explorer is built on stock templates. We don’t see any sign of advanced development capability this far.

Based on what we see in this release Sparkster is currently not a platform for ”full scale support to build AI powered apps” as their roadmap suggest and we are puzzled by the progress and lack of provisioning of any type of SDK plugin. The Sparkster team has a lot to work on to even be close to their claims and outlined roadmap.

Note: we have been in contact with the Sparkster team prior to publishing this review, in order to provide opportunity for them to comment on our observations. Their answers are listed below but doesn’t change our overall conclusions of the current state of Sparkster development.

“We use several open source libraries in our projects. These include OpenDHT, WebSocket++, Boost, and Ed25519. In other places, we’ve clearly listed where code is adapted from in the cases where we’ve borrowed code from other sources. We’ve used borrowed code for things like getting the time from a time server: a procedure that is well documented and for which many working code examples already exist, so it is not necessary for us to reinvent the wheel. However, these cases cover a small portion of our overall code base.

Our alpha net supports one cell, and our public claims are that one cell can support 1,000 TPS. These are claims that we have tested and validated, so the mainnet is in spec. You will see that multi cell support is coming in our next release, as mentioned in our readme. Our method of achieving multi cell support is with a well understood and documented methodology, specifically consistent hashing. However, an optimization opportunity, we’re investiging LSH over CS. “A lot of people in the basketball world were like, ‘Why would you go there?’ ” Towns recalled. “I told them, “It’s a chance to go to the best school in the world. Why wouldn’t I consider it?’ ”

At first, Towns dreamed of becoming a computer software engineer and developing apps for Google. Then a series of events altered his focus, taught him the power of his own voice and caused him to embrace the fight for racial equality.

The son of a black father and a blonde-haired, green-eyed mother, Towns grew up in a family that was pragmatic about racism. James Towns and Melissa Smitherman taught their son to cherish all humans regardless of race or ethnicity yet to never forget that some strangers will view him differently because of his skin color.

That message didn’t fully resonate with Towns until he took a African-American studies class for college credit his junior year of high school. No longer did Towns underestimate racial injustice in America after studying the high-profile deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and other unarmed blacks during encounters with the police.

“It was late in my adolescence, I was starting to form my own thoughts and that was a very pivotal moment in history,” Towns said. “In many respects, it was an awakening for me.”

In December 2014, amidst a national reckoning on police brutality against minorities, Towns decided he wanted to play a role in fighting for meaningful change. He helped organize a protest that not only fostered discussion at his high school but also drew the national media’s attention.

Just before the end of one school day, Towns and his African-American studies classmates gathered in the school’s common area and laid down as though they were dead. Taped to each of their backs were pieces of paper with the words “I can’t breathe,” a slogan derived from Garner’s last words while in a police officer’s chokehold.

Seth Town’s inspiration If Towns learned to speak his mind during high school, it was Harvard where he developed his voice. He forged relationships with the kind of people that most college basketball players don’t have on their contact list.

Harvard coach Tommy Amaker organizes a monthly breakfast in Cambridge that exposes his players to leaders from the sports world and beyond. Among the invited guests who Towns now counts as mentors: Best-selling author Mitch Albom, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and civil rights activist Dr. Harry Edwards.

It also influenced Towns seeing other high-profile athletes use their clout to further important causes. Towns described himself as “monumentally inspired” after Colin Kaepernick came to Harvard in 2018 and spoke about why he was willing to jeopardize his football career to keep fighting for racial justice.

Perhaps Towns’ biggest source of motivation was a tragedy that reminded him how rare it is for an inner-city kid like himself to have the opportunity to mingle with luminaries or to get a world-class education. On Oct. 19, 2018, close friend and former high school teammate Jordan “Kizzzy” Kinchen died in a double shooting in Columbus.

Kinchen’s murder led Towns to focus on creating more opportunities for underprivileged African-American kids. He researched ways to improve test scores, to offer internships and to provide college opportunities where they didn’t previously exist.

“Seth wanted everyone to believe that if he could do it, they could too,” Smitherman said.

Towns had more time than he wanted to focus on making a difference away from basketball at Harvard because injuries limited his impact on the court.

The Ivy League’s 2017-18 player of the year suffered a right knee injury late in a loss to Penn in that season’s conference title game. Lingering pain in both knees sidelined Towns for both the past two seasons and forced him to undergo surgery last December.

That injury history didn’t keep marquee programs from pursuing Towns when he announced his intent to leave Harvard as a graduate transfer this spring. Towns chose hometown Ohio State over a long list of suitors that included Duke, Kansas, Virginia and Syracuse.

On May 28, the day he graduated from Harvard with a sociology degree, Towns celebrated at a rooftop bar in downtown Columbus. He remembers experiencing a twinge of regret when he peered down at the street below and saw a throng of demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd without him.

“It made me upset that I wasn’t part of that,” Towns said, “so I decided that the next day my voice was going to be heard.”

It was emotional for him to see his hometown come together to demand equal rights.

When Towns arrived, he joined dozens of protesters gathered in front of the Columbus police station calling for justice for Floyd. Once the crowd swelled to about 500, protesters marched up and down High and Broad streets while chanting Floyd’s name.

“Standing among them, I felt such deep solidarity and such deep pain from their voices,” Towns said. “It brought tears to my eyes hearing and feeling all that.”

The mood of the protest became more tense later that evening when police officers sought to clear the area. Columbus police allege that protesters were throwing bricks and rocks, setting off fireworks and breaking windows of downtown businesses.

Towns was among the protesters who chose to stand their ground despite verbal warnings. Police then began using their bikes or horses to push the crowd back by force.

Towns said he was standing with his arms around his throat screaming “I can’t breathe” when six police officers surrounded him and forced his hands behind his back. The Ohio State forward described the incident as “a surreal moment to say the least” and said the officers’ decision to detain him “seemed out of the blue.”

In a video that went viral on social media that night, Towns can be seen shouting, “Say his name!” while officers restrain him. “George Floyd!” a group of protesters yell back.

A fellow protester who witnessed police take Towns confirmed that he did nothing to provoke them besides stand his ground.

“From what I saw, he was simply not moving from the road,” Eric Bailey said. “I'm not sure what he did that was different from what I had done that would make them detain him and not me. He had not acted aggressively. He had not thrown a bottle. He did not yell at the officers. He did nothing but exercise his first amendment [rights].”

Whatever the reason, Columbus police took Towns away by van and held him at the nearby firehouse with four other protesters arrested that night. There he remained until his mother spotted him through the chain-link fence a few hours later.

From Harvard graduation to the back of a police van If Towns was surprised to find himself in police custody, he was just as shocked to have his mother arrive out of nowhere.

Smitherman even talked her way into the firehouse, where police allowed her to sit alongside her son while he was detained.

“I’ll tell you what crossed my mind when I was sitting there,” Smitherman said. “If I was a black mother, would I have been afforded that same opportunity? Would a black mother have been given the same opportunity to keep her child safe?”

Columbus police eventually released Towns without arresting him. Then his mother drove him home and he got a few hours sleep.

By the time Towns awoke the next morning, his story was everywhere. Media outlets across the country picked up the story of a basketball player who graduated from Harvard one day and was detained by the police the next.

Rather than hide from the story, Towns recognized that he “had a unique opportunity to have people listen.” Later that day, he filmed himself reading a powerful statement that made it clear he had no remorse for his detainment.

Towns reiterated that sentiment during an interview on SportsCenter that evening. He pledged to continue to use his voice to speak out for “people who are unheard.”

On May 31, two days after his detainment, Towns returned to downtown Columbus to protest again, this time armed with a megaphone. Towns delivered a passionate speech, telling fellow protesters, “We are here, we are peaceful, we are loud and we will do this every day until we get what we demand.”
