Example

“We must teach more by example than by word.”

St. Mary MacKillop’s point about the powerful witness of a lived faith is dead on. But she’s not talking about mere persuasion. As if the Faith were a product to be marketed.

Her observation goes right to the heart of today’s Gospel. Where Jesus says to us, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Which means what?

As Christians, you and I can’t clock out.

To be clear, I’m not saying that we always have to be doing more. Or that what you and I do is never enough (that’s a recipe for burnout, even when done for the best of reasons).

Or that God is somehow the world’s worst boss (actually, God is literally the world’s best boss).

The reason that you and I can’t clock out? Other people.

Other people are watching us. What we do. How we live.

And (consciously or unconsciously) saying to themselves, “that’s what it means to be a Christian.”

So when I go to the store, and snap at the clerk because they’re out of my favorite brand of whatever. Someone (along with the clerk) is going to see me in my supreme moment of Karen.

And (consciously or unconsciously) say to themselves, “that’s what it means to be a Christian.”

In that moment, I am preaching a sermon more powerful than any I will ever give from a pulpit.

I’m teaching them about the relationship that I say I have with God.

I’m teaching them what that really means. By what I do. And how I live.

This is why St. Mary MacKillop said, “We must teach more by example than by word.”

Because, whether we like it or not, that is exactly what we do.
