Ok I have seen Christmas Carol.
Jinyoung is insane, but damn that movie needs to come with 500 warnings.
Good for him to try something this crude and far from his usual pretty boy persona.

Blu-ray Review: #Screamers / The Monster Project
Tumblr media
Found footage filmmaking, particularly within the horror genre, has become a tired trope. While the boom that followed in the wake of Paranormal Activity has largely come to an end, a few indie movies still attempt to utilize the technique in order to pull off high concepts on a minuscule budget. But filmmakers who choose to do so must offer something exciting in order to win over viewers fatigued by the trend.
Unfortunately, neither #Screamers (yes, the hashtag is part of the title) nor The Monster Project - a pair of found footage horror movies recently released as a Blu-ray double feature by Epic Pictures’ Dread Central Presents - brings anything new to the table to justify the tactic. That's not to say they're bad movies by any means, and found footage fans will surely enjoy them, but they fail to rise above the inherent limitations of the filmmaking style.
Tumblr media
#Screamers is posed as a documentary about Gigaler, a YouTube-esque tech startup that tracks users' online habits and mines their data to tailor videos to their individual tastes. When a purported snuff film that turns out to be a "screamer" video (a short clip that abruptly ends with a scary face flashing on the screen accompanied by a loud scream) goes viral, eager co-founders Tom (Tom Malloy, The Alphabet Killer), the ideas guy and a natural showman, and Chris (Chris Bannow), who is more reserved and handles the tech side, begin to investigate its creators.
It may not reinvent the wheel, but #Screamers’ strength is in the fact that it feels like an actual documentary. The found footage setup provides an easy excuse for copious setup and exposition to be provided directly to the viewer upfront. Although the details as to how Gigaler actually operates are a bit murky, at face value it's a believable concept. Its brief addressing of user privacy is timely, given the recent Facebook controversy.
Tumblr media
Director Dean Matthew Ronalds (Netherbeast Incorporated) co-wrote the script with Malloy, and they completely commit to the concept, going so far as creating an actual Gigaler.com. The film was outlined and rehearsed, but the dialogue is largely improvised. As a result, the performances feel genuine. The script also works in the Jack the Ripper lore, although it ultimately has little tie-in to the plot; it's apparent that the filmmakers merely had access to it and threw it in to add production value.
#Screamers, like so many found footage movies, offers little payoff and even fewer answers by the time the credits roll, but, at only 82 minutes, it's a well-paced slice of entertainment. Its special features include an audio commentary with Ronalds and Malloy, which offers interesting insight into the making of a found footage movie (and even addresses the hashtag in the title), along with deleted scenes with optional commentary and the trailer.
Tumblr media
The Monster Project marks the feature directorial debut of Victor Mathieu. It concerns an aspiring film crew - mastermind/host Devon (Justin Bruening, Grey's Anatomy), comedic relief cameraman Jamal (Jamal Quezaire), director Murielle (Murielle Zuker), and production assistant Bryan (Toby Hemingway, The Covenant) - making a documentary about real life monsters. Bryan is a recovering addict, which adds an interesting angle, but there's an entirely unnecessary love triangle that detracts from the plot.
A Craigslist ad miraculously yields only genuine responses, so the crew rents out an old, rundown house to conduct interviews with three alleged monsters: a vampire (Yvonne Zima, The Long Kiss Goodnight), a demon (Shiori Ideta), and a skinwalker (Steven Flores). The skinwalker - a Navajo take on the werewolf mythos - also happens to be a police officer, so he wears a body camera that's always recording despite being off-duty.
Tumblr media
I was already turned off by the mess of genre cliches, but The Monster Project completely lost me in the third act when there's a found footage dream sequence (!), in which a demon apparently possess a crew member and the audience sees their vision through a GoPro. I'm willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of entertainment, but I couldn't take the movie seriously after such a logical inconsistency. It's a nice looking scene, complete with atmospheric smoke and shadows, but it should have been cut; it doesn't fit in the movie and does little to advance the plot.
Although the concept is interesting, the execution leaves something to be desired. Where #Screamers benefits from feeling genuine, The Monster Project is contrived. The performances feel scripted (although Hemingway shines as the most natural of the bunch), and characters are constantly filming and commenting on everything for no reason except to tell the story. At 99 minutes, the film is in dire need of a tightening. A good 15+ minutes could have been cut from the self-serving first act, which needlessly doubles down on the setup.
Tumblr media
Jim Beinke (who previously worked on creatures in the likes of Men in Black II, Planet of the Apes, and Cursed) handled the film’s practical special effects, which are well done but largely marred by the overuse of night vision. (With the exception of a couple shots, the entire last 40 minutes are filmed in night vision.) The practicals are augmented and supplemented by visual effects. The CGI is quite good considering the limited budget, but it can be distracting.
The story of The Monster Project making its way to the screen is perhaps more interesting than the film itself, as explored in the Blu-ray’s 44-minute making-of featurette and the audio commentary with Mathieu, Beinke, and cinematographer/editor Phillip Sebal. They discuss the trials and tribulations of making a low budget movie, like being forced to recast a lead actor to appese investors, the challenges of night vision, and illegal downloading. The Smiling Man web series that was created to promote the film and the trailer are also included.
Tumblr media
If you're already burnt out on the found footage trend, neither #Screamers nor The Monster Project are going to change your mind. But those who still appreciate the technique certainly won't be bored by these two. #Screamers, in particular, stands out for having an interesting story that nicely builds with a fair bit of intrigue, a couple of tense moments, and a great jump scare.
#Screamers / The Monster Project is available now on Blu-ray via Dread Central Presents.

Film Narrative 2 - Fiction Project Critical Reflection:
Initial Idea, Story and Script:
The initial idea came from Euan, who had the broad idea of a door-to-door salesman trying to sell something. We then expanded the idea to have it follow a desperate, morally dubious salesman, who grows increasingly desperate in his efforts to sell his products to a vulnerable old woman. We liked the dubious morality of the idea, and the inner conflict this would give the (unnamed) Salesman. We also thought the two characters, who both had clear but conflicting objectives (the Salesman needs to secure a deal to provide for his family) and the elderly woman, Mrs Beale (who simply wants some company, and isn't interested in the Salesman’s pitch) would help to give the film some good narrative thrust, as Mrs Beale casually dismisses the Salesman’s pitches, and the Salesman then has to try a new, more dubious tactic to secure his sale.
I feel my main contributions were towards coming up with various story beats and character developments for the idea, and making some dialogue revisions to Euan’s second draft of the script. This is due to my interest in storytelling, and script writing. I personally feel like I made a good deal of suggestions for the plot which made it into the final script and feel my dialogue suggestions, while somewhat hurried and not overly polished, helped to expand certain beats where I felt the script rushed past a moment that could be used to create more tension or character. Overall, I feel happy with the final draft of the script, although I feel it was left slightly late, and would have liked to have had time to submit/review a few more drafts done by either Euan, myself or another member of the group, so as to fine tune each and every aspect of the script.
Pre Production Documents:
(For all pre production documents, go to this link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15hR7u8XKGlIGuBE3ye0p2FvMvKXCiAJS)
Tumblr media
While I did have some ideas for the films style (suggesting ideas like the tv show White Gold) and some ideas for certain shots which I shared with the group(like the opening shot were we see the Salesman who the neighbouring door slammed in his face), I feel I was more engaged with the story and script side of the project than I was with the production side. While that is more what I am interested in, I feel in the next project, I want to get more stuck into the pre production aspects, even if just for some variety and experience. I did do the logline and script synopsis, but that wasn't too far removed from my work with regards to the story and the script.
Tumblr media
I think the group did a great job with their production documents, creating a clear sense of the film's style and cinematography. The only issue was sometimes a lack of communication between each person meant certain documents did not 100 percent lineup with each other (like the shot list and the storyboards feature differing shots) but overall, the documents weren’t too inconsistent with each other.
Editing:
I think the picture edit went well. This was my third time using avid (I had previously used it to edit a different scene from “Lethe” and a film of my own) so my this point I had more of an understanding of how to use the software. I tried to create a slow paced edit that generally stayed on the character of Eve as much as possible, as the story is told from her point of view. I feel I could have done a better job with regards to keeping the group up to date as my edit developed and getting their feedback, but I did get some good advice about my second edit from Zoe and group 4 in one tutorial that I took into consideration when working on my third edit.
I also attempted a sound edit using a free trial of Avid Ultimate, which was a good learning experience although ultimately I didn't feel too happy with my finished product. While I managed to raise the levels of the appropriate sounds, and avoided any jarring audio rises or any unnatural silences, I don't think I chose the best background sounds (I used the corridor and general hospital sounds for the whole video, as opposed to just using them at the end. This made the scene feel a bit too busy and overwhelming, and hearing some ambient room noise and beeping sounds throughout instead likely would have been a better choice). Ultimately, I felt the scene worked better before I added these sound effects. My edit didn't manage to export in time as well. We ultimately went with Rosie’s edit, although I still hope to rework mine at a later date.
Crit Feedback:
The logline and synopsis were praised for being intriguing (with regards to the logline), effectively summing up the events of the film (with regards to the synopsis) and overall being well written and well formatted. One shortcoming (or something that group 4 was complimented for having that we didn't have) was not making reference to the movie's style and genre. Additionally, while not necessary, a document describing the key characteristics of the main characters would have been a nice addition.
The rest of the pre production documents were well received. The storyboards by Cal were well drawn and gave a clear idea what the films cinematography would look like (although could have done with some text beneath each image), the costume/prop/set documents by Rosie gave a clear idea of the films style (as did the moodboard, although we were told some comments on each of the images would have helped) and the shotlist by Robbie was well formatted, and clear and concise with regards to what each shot would feature (despite some confusion over some of the abbreviations and the fact the storyboards and the shotlist did not completely line up).
Script Feedback:
(to follow. Apparently, Euan has not received this from Paul, which I will ask about and add once we have gotten the feedback)
Edit Feedback:
Here is the feedback Kieran gave me for my edit, along with my thoughts about it and how I would go about it differently in the future:
“Good professional practice with leader.”
“Atmospheric start, but the out of focus POV shot lasts too long.” - The reason this lasts for so long is to allow the character of Abe to slowly come into focus, to show how Eve is slowly waking up. However, I could definitely start the clip a few more seconds in and maybe cut of a second at the end, or just have a few seconds of a blurry Abe without a change in focus, although that might not be as effective.
“At 01:00:31:00 the scratching of the head doesn’t communicate tension and feels awkward.” - While I initially choose this part of the clip because I thought it would be interesting to have Kane doing something other than silently brooding, thinking about it again, I would agree with this, and would solve it by choosing a different part of the clip where Kane is simply standing still and looking ahead.
“It’s a good 40 seconds before anything really happens, which is too slow.” - I would agree with this - perhaps 20 seconds of build up could have been a good balance?
“Good reveal of the space at 01:00:47:04, using him turning around.” - Previously, this shot had been criticized for being too brief and seeming a bit random compared to the closer up shots used elsewhere. Despite this, I had kept it, as I felt it properly established the geography of the room and showed all the characters in relation to each other, so it was nice to hear Kieran liked this.
“The look at 01:00:59:00 is too short, allow the look to settle for a few frames before cutting to what someone is looking at to make it less jarring.” - I would agree with this. I'm not sure why I cut this so early, maybe the actor only looked over for a second and I worked with what I had, but I imagine more likely than not this was just an oversight.
“This whole section up to 01:02:13:00 is very good, but missing a reaction from him to her asking for the bed pan.” - I think I stayed on the shot of Eve instead of cutting to Kane purely because I liked his line delivery in that shot, but I could have either looked for a shot of Kane with line delivery of a similar quality or cut to Kane reacting to Eve’s line and then cut back to Eve and had Kane’s line.
“The watch pickup ECU is a little quick, as you haven’t established the watch previous to this and it is a key object.” - I would agree with this, and feel it could be solved by either having the watch appear earlier and only having it appear briefly here, or only having it appear here and holding on it longer to make up for that.
“Generally the pace is a little slow at the start and end, and this scene can’t sustain longer than 3 minutes.” - With a runtime of 3 minutes 23 seconds, and Kieran stating the scene couldn't sustain a runtime of over 3 minutes, this was understandably deemed too long. While I was going for a slower pace as opposed to a fast one, it may have been possible to have found a middle ground between the two. With the opening, I have already said that it could be whittled down to about 20 seconds. The ending might have been a bit more difficult to cut down, as it isn't just Eve lying in bed but going across the room and doing various things, but I still think I could have cut it down a bit. This could have been done by minimising the time Eve is simply crossing the room and looking through the bag, and giving a good amount of time to the more important beats, like the watch, the photo ID and the other bed.
Overall Reflection:
I think some more communication could have been a bit better, and we would have benefitted from a few more meetings, just to update each other, make sure we were on the same page and make sure there were no major differences in our work. I personally would have liked to have spent even more time fine turning the script, and getting in a few more drafts, but I am still quite happy with the submitted work. Despite this, I think everyone did a good job at their respective jobs and turned in work of high quality, and I look forward to working on the independent project with this feedback in mind.

THE FIVE LEVELS OF REMOTE WORK
Tumblr media
COVID-19 has forced companies the world over to enact — or create — remote working protocols. The likes of Box, Amazon, Airbnb, Facebook, Google and Microsoft have all told their employees some variation of “work from home”. But so too are more traditional organisations across fields such as real estate, accounting and local government. Zoom team-selfies, are slowly polluting Twitter and LinkedIn feeds.
But like most things worth doing, there are different levels of proficiency and sophistication to scale. Many newly-remote workers seem to conflate simply downloading Zoom, Slack, and having access to email with having this remote working thing sorted out.
But having a ball and a bat does not make you a Cricketer.
 A Case – Automattic Company.
When it comes to swimming in the deep end of the remote working pool, few companies are doing it better than Automattic — the company behind Wordpress, which powers 35% of all websites on the internet. Automattic has about 1,200 employees scattered across more than 75 countries, speaking 93 languages. It boasts a company valuation of US$3 billion and has made several significant acquisitions such as that of WooCommerce and blogging platform, Tumblr. The company does not have an office, with its employees collaborating almost exclusively online.
Automattic’s founder, Matt Mullenweg (hence the “double t” in the company’s name) recently appeared on a popular podcast to talk on what he calls the five levels of distributed teams (he prefers ‘distributed’ to ‘remote’ because the latter implies that there is still a central place of work). Encouragingly Mullenweg’s sentiments echo the fact that the tools are only as good as how you use them. In fact, abuse of tools can actually make us less productive.
The Five Levels of Distributed Teams
Tumblr media
Level 1: Non-Deliberate Action
Nothing deliberate has been done by the company to support remote work, but employees can still keep the ball rolling somewhat if they are at home for a day. They have access to their smartphone, and email. Perhaps they dial in to a few meetings. But they will put off most things until they’re back in the office and will be a shadow of their office-bound selves. Level 1 is where the overwhelming majority of organisations were prior to the COVID19 outbreak.
Level 2: Recreating the Office Online
This is where most organisations now reside — especially traditional ones. It is where your employees have access to videoconferencing software (eg. Zoom), instant messaging software (eg. Slack) and email, but instead of redesigning work to take advantage of the new medium, teams ultimately end up recreating online, how they work in the office.
This extends to many of the bad habits that permeate the modern office and suppress the ability of knowledge workers to actually think, with..:-
a)      . . . . 10-person video-calls when two people would suffice,
b)      . . . . 60+ interruptions a day — now via Slack and phone calls,
c)      . . . . the sporadic checking of and responding to email more than 70 times a day throughout the day,
d)      . . . . hyper-responsiveness that is expected of all employees, leaving them wired to desktop,
Tumblr media
Mullenweg equates lack of redesigning work around the medium. A similar example was with the radio drama of the 1930s, which was essentially the acting out of plays over the airwaves. Adapting the content to the radio medium was not fully considered or appreciated at the time. At Level 2, people are still expected to be online from 9 to 5, and in some cases to be subject to what essentially amounts to spyware, with employers installing screen-logging software on their employee machines to ensure compliance.
Level 3: Adapting to the medium
At level 3, organizations start to adapt to and take advantage of the medium. Mullenweg points to shared documents (such as a Google Doc), that is visible to all and updated in real-time during a discussion, so that there is a shared understanding of what is discussed and decided, eliminating the risk of lost in translation errors and time wasted thereafter.
It’s at this stage that companies start to invest in better equipment for their employees as well, such as lighting for video-calls and background noise-canceling microphones. Effective written communication becomes critical the more companies embrace remote work. With an aversion to ‘jumping on calls’ at a whim, and a preference for asynchronous communication (more on that later), most of Automattic’s communications is text-based, and so accurate and timely articulation becomes key. In fact, Mullenweg says that most of the company’s hiring is performed via text as opposed to candidate phone or vide calls.
Tumblr media
When it comes to meetings:
a)      Only hold a meeting if it is absolutely necessary and the same outcomes cannot be reached via a quick ad-hoc conversation, phone call, email, text or instant message.
b)      Set the meeting to 15 minutes by default, and only make it longer if absolutely necessary (the shorter the meeting, the more succinct you will have to be, and the less time there will be for pointless small talk and rambling).
c)      Set a specific agenda and desired outcome going into the meeting.
d)      Invite only ‘must have’ people (unless this is a big Type-1 decision, two people should usually do it with three on the rare occasion).
e)      Agree on next steps, allocate responsible person(s) and set due dates (this is especially important to avoid boomerang meetings).
f)       Never, ever, use a meeting simply to communicate information — that’s what email or IM is for. Many are indeed learning that all those meetings could have in fact been emails.
Level 4: Asynchronous Communication
‘I’ll get to it when it suits me.’ This is the nature of asynchronous communication. The reality is that most things do not require an immediate response. For most things, a one-way email or instant message should do the job, with the recipient responding when it suits them. If something really is urgent, then the mode of communication should reflect that. Pick up the phone, or tap that person on the shoulder, but only if it is truly urgent.
Aside from the obvious and massive benefit of giving knowledge workers time to think, create and get into the flow state (a psychological state whereby we are up to five times more productive according to McKinsey), but asynchronous communication predisposes people to making better decisions. If you want to cut emotion out of the equation, increase your response time. Giving people time to think between question and response, rather than fall victim to blurting out the first thing that comes to mind in a meeting or when tapped on the shoulders, delivers a compound benefit to the organization over time.
In order to avoid tennis games and duplication of effort, ensure that asynchronous messages:
a)      provide sufficient background detail, where necessary provide clear action item(s) and outcome(s) required.
b)      provide a due date
c)      provide a path of recourse if the recipient is unable to meet your requirements.
For example:
“Hey Sunil. Attached is the incorporation document for our new spin-off company. Please sign the document where requested and send it back to me by 4 pm this Friday. If you have any concerns, give me a call on 555 1983.”
Globally distributed teams, who work asynchronously, and master ‘passing the baton’, can get three times more done than a local team relying on everybody to be in an office between 9am and 5pm.
Awaken the Night Owls
Science suggests that our preferred sleeping patterns — our chronotypes — are programmed at birth. People are either night owls or early birds. Several studies have found that about 30 to 40 per cent of the population are night owls, which means that the modern 9-to-5 workday is sabotaging the creative and intellectual efforts of almost half the workforce. Studies show that while early risers are more alert in the morning, night owls show stronger focus and longer attention spans 10 hours after waking than their early-bird compatriots.
Level 5: ‘Nirvana’
This is where your distributed team works better than any in-person team ever could. Mullenweg equates this level with having more emphasis on ‘environment design’, insofar as the organization’s culture, and the physical environment people work in is concerned.
The disadvantages:
Three big disadvantages or concerns that face newly remote teams, and how to counter them, can be found below:
1)      Team bonding and building
a)      Instead of telling their employees to be at the office 11 months a year, and have 4 weeks off, the script gets flipped. Employees have 11 months of remote work a year and have to make time to travel for up to 4 weeks a year for team bonding and building events.
i)        To counter this, organizations can make use of custom-built apps which keep track of who has met who, and then assign seats, say at a dinner party, so that people sit with people they’ve not yet met before.
2)      Osmotic and office communication
a)      With everybody working online, you miss out on watering hole conversations, overhearing other people say something that you can help with, or just having a general awareness of your team’s activities by virtue of being within earshot of discussions.
i)        To counter this, some organizations use an internal blog, and a place where an incredible amount of conversation and activity is chronicled and captured.
3)      Security
a)      Mullenweg points to endpoint security —computer networks that are remotely bridged to client devices — and used for BYOD such as laptops and smartphones.
b)      The alternative — being inside the office wall, as Mullenweg says —essentially becomes a single point of failure, and compromises depth in defense.
c)      What we should be doing instead is rather than over-emphasizing just access control, we need to be protecting against malicious behaviors. With over 70% of IT hacks using social engineering to get inside, he has a point.

This is it! The Final Episode! The Last Installment! The Swan Song of the Blog! I’m 40 as hell already! (01-14-18)
Original Goals
Looking back at the goals I laid out in the first post for this blog… I didn’t do bad.
Body Goals:
My weight is where is should be.. Weigh in 158.5
The 2 inches off the waist didn’t happen. Ha! The waist is as trashy as it was but probably no worse.. since I never measured with tape I have to judge based on which pants I can or can not button and how uncomfortable it is to put a sock on.. which still tends to fluctuate after a few good or bad weeks.. but I’d say I’m right about where I started.
(this is from today at the gym when I registered for a thing... :D)
Tumblr media
The elbow miraculously healed.. the pain is gone but last week I noticed it was radiating heat like a nuclear reactor so.. I might wanna get it checked out.. or maybe I just have a hot laser in my elbow from the spider bite. #superpowers
We all know that I pissed away any chance of being “11 months smoke free” a long time ago, but I recommitted to ruining that goal this past week during vacation/birthday celebrations when I torched 2 full packs of Marlboro Reds. I really do think the 2 Tough Mudders I’ve signed up for will help keep me from reaching for the reds in my weaker moments.
Blood pressure has not been checked but I’d be surprised if it’s great after the birthday week vacation I’ve had of all night bars and all day food closing out with a delicious “brisket burnt ends” sandwich from The Joint.
Career Goals:
Documentary is not finished, but it is much closer and I’m more fired up about it than ever! This one is gonna hit like a Bruce Lee kick, y’all. I aim to complete and submit to festivals by the end of March and that is still absolutely manageable with my much lighter spring semester schedule.
Longer term job offer.. I got that since I got the full time job offer this past August which I’ve accepted. I also did get accepted to an MFA Screenwriting program, but I declined to go in favor of the job and the chance to actually finish the film.
Feature film script.. I know exactly what I want to write next but.. that goal seems insanely over ambitious looking back.. I definitely assumed everything would go much faster with the doc than it did, but.. I’ll say now that by this time next year I fully expect to have achieved that goal. Can’t wait to write again!
Heart/Mind Goals:
I aimed at 7000 minutes and 20mins/day average.. The phone won’t tell me how many minutes unless I sit and add up each day.. but it does say 21 mins/day avg for the year, which is crazy! I touched on what I feel like I get out of meditation a few times earlier so I won’t yammer on rewording the same thoughts, but it feels good to know I’ve been able to take a small step in the direction I think is good for me. I want to do much longer sits this year.
Tumblr media
Elliptical/Sauna..
I’m sure I also averaged 20/mins in the sauna for the year but the elliptical I walked away from in favor of shorter runs on the treadmill so.. I sorta traded that and my phone doesn’t track the treadmill so.. you’ll have to take my word that I feel I probably did also get that average. I was in the gym a LOT this year. Ha!
Fed My Head:
I aimed at 12 audiobooks and I did 17. I would love to do even more but editing requires the focus of all the faculties I possess.
I certainly however did not “read more than 10 books.” I read chunks of a lot of books mostly relating to preparing film syllabi and keeping my head in the film problem solving space. But I just finished of Year of Magical Thinking, given to me by my dad after my friend Palma died. It’s a tough read b/c of what the author went through, and not at all what I expected from the title, but I would recommend it for anyone who cares about people :)

A Very Special THANK YOU to Scott McCarthy
Owner of Balance Strength and Fitness Center www.balancefitnesstraining.com
Scott voluntarily gave me a 4 day workout routine. He tailored it to my situation, a slowly healing elbow and someone who can’t spend 3 hours in the gym everyday.. and while my food and beer habits probably prevented me from losing the belly flab, I definitely gained noticeable muscle in my arms, chest and legs. So, I’m certainly stronger than I’ve ever been and in a pretty well rounded way. Without Scott’s workout plan I’m sure that I would’ve waffled from one thing to the next w/o seeing any results, but with it, I had just the right amount of workout 4 days a week and I was able to push myself each time I walked into the gym. And it was great to know that I had a map from someone who looks like the Incredible Hulk and has been training people for 20 years. He just moved into a new place and upgraded the gym that he owns. He also knows a ton about nutrition and will happily call bullshit on a lot of fads that come through, but he’ll tell you exactly why it’s bullshit. Much Respect! Scott! I owe you some video work, brother! Let’s coordinate and we’ll put some cool spots together for the gym. If you (dear reader) are in the Delaware area and want to get real about training stop reading this and drive directly to his gym… unless it’s really late. Then just go FIRST THING TOMORROW!
Final Thoughts..
I want to thank every single person who read this thing even once and especially those of you who shot me a little word of encouragement or a book suggestion along the way privately or publicly. I truly do believe as an experiment it was successful even if all the goals weren’t met b/c I did have the idea of being held accountable for my actions in mind probably more than you’d imagine. And while it didn’t keep every cheeseburger or cigarette out of my face, it did get me to meditate on weeks where I might not have at all. And the fact that I mediated a few times or ate healthier a few times to be able to report that I had done so doesn’t make me feel like I’m somehow a fake. I was as honest as I could be about everything I did and in the case of food, exercise and mediation in service of the audience.. I still get the benefit of each thing even if it isn’t coming from some pure unpolluted source of willpower. I think there’s a bit of horseshit in most ideas that swirl around purity anyway, so.. I’m good with using the blog in the way that I did.
I’m also glad to be done. Ha! I’m happy that I stuck with it for the full year, but.. I’m looking forward to returning to keeping my shameful failures quiet like everyone else online. When I get time I will probably go back and read through the entire year and there’s a chance I might gain some personal insights from that, so I look forward to doing that. And after a borderline belligerent 10 days in New Orleans to celebrate the fact that I’m still standing at 40, I’m also looking forward to getting back to regular exercise (which I did none of in Nola even tho I brought the running shoes :D) as well as returning to eating more like an athlete in training than an idiot with a death wish. I did yoga Thursday and got back in the gym for the first full workout of the new year today - one week after getting back from vacation.
Goals for 2019:
Heart/Mind
Some kind of dinner with people once or twice a month Keep a daily food and exercise journal Mediate 30mins/day Listen to 20 Books Read 5 Books
Tumblr media
Career
Get the film sold at a festival Finish a feature screenplay and get lead cast attached
Body
Zero Cigarettes Lose most of the belly flab - I just signed up for an 8 week fitness challenge at my gym :) Maintain Gym routine (4-6 days/week weights, 2-3 mile runs 1-2 days/week) Keep doing yoga once a week Keep an eye on Blood Pressure
Food
Take probiotic stomach supplements for a year.  Beef no more than once a week (taper down to once a month by end of year) Quit fast food. AKA - quit being gross, AKA quit using my organs as an industrial sludge filter
Eat more good for your gut stuff in general (straight copying my cousin on his cabbage soup/quinoa moves)
Tumblr media
Booze
Alcohol limited to dinner with friends and 1 glass of wine with dinner (I did this wine w/ dinner thing for a stretch of time in the past. It worked and I like it). Not drinking makes it a lot easier to quit smoking as well - I once quit both for 9 months.. I did the one glass of wine/night all last week. It worked. And I’m cutting beer completely for the next 8 weeks so as to get fucking shredded to maximum and win $750 from this god damn fitness challenge.
Tumblr media
I think a big part of why some people find it hard to finish writing books.. or anything is b/c they don’t feel like the end is good enough.. and maybe this end is lacking. I put off writing it for a couple weeks b/c I wanted to make it special in some way.. I wanted it to feel like an amazing ending.. but done is better than perfect and I am now done. I love y’all! I really do! Thanks for all the support!
And remember.. “when things look bad and it looks like you’re not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. ‘Cause if you lose your head and you give up.. then you neither live nor win. That’s just the way it is.” - (fictional character) Josey Wales
Get Mean in 2019 ;)

7 Secret Moves To Lose Love Handles For Women Over 40
New Post has been published on https://www.firsthealthfitness.com/weight-loss/7-secret-moves-to-lose-love-handles-for-women-over-40.html
7 Secret Moves To Lose Love Handles For Women Over 40
Love handles are made of stubborn fat that most women struggle to get rid of, especially as we get older.
To lose your extra tummy pooch make sure you add these secret exercises perfect for targeting love handles.
Love handles might sound like something rather nice but actually, they’re a polite way of pointing out that unwanted excess fat around the middle, particularly at the sides of the waist!
Love handles usually affect middle-aged people, so from about the age of 40 onwards.
This is because the metabolism notably slows down after 40 and that’s when pockets of fat are more likely to accumulate around the tummy area, it’s also referred to as “middle-aged spread”.
Don’t worry though, there are things that you can do to get rid of your love handles after 40.
Read on to find out how to tone that chubbier than you’d like waist!
1. Try a Side Plank
This exercise not only helps to strengthen the core, but it also trims inches from the waist.
If you’re used to a full plank, this one is similar.
Lie down on one side and push your body upwards, while placing your upper ankle on top of the lower ankle.
You can either start on your elbow or extend your lower arm so you bear your body weight on your feet and wrist.
Extend your other arm into the air, or rest it on your upper waist.
Stay in this position for 20 seconds until you get used to it, you can gradually increase the time you side-plank by 10 seconds to get maximum benefit.
Repeat the exercise on the other side.
2. Crunches with a Twist
Tummy crunches are an effective way to tone your tummy but if you only do crunches, you’ll miss the area around the sides of your waist.
So, next time you do your crunches, add in an extra twenty, raise to a crunch, then twist to one side, next crunch, twist to the other side and so on.
3. Keep Moving
If you have a rather sedentary job then it’s important that you factor in enough movement during the day.
It’s essential that you get up and move around every 15 minutes or so, if this isn’t possible, use half of your lunch hour to go for a brisk walk and get your metabolism moving.
Try to use your legs as much as you can.
Take the stairs rather than the escalator or lift, walk an extra stop to the next bus stop, park further away than usual.
All of the above helps your body to get fitter and stops that fat from lingering.
4. Try HIIT
High-Intensity Interval Training is a very effective method to burn fat and certain exercises really target the belly area.
The sessions are short too so they’re easy to incorporate into your day but they’re hard-core so be prepared to work it!
HITT usually last between 10 and 20 minutes, focussing on repetitions of certain high-impact exercises with minimum rest in-between.
Expect crunches, push-ups, planking, squats, lunges, burpees and more and be prepared to sweat.
The main benefit of HIIT is that it keeps on working long after you’ve exercised and could burn up to 16 calories a minute (based on average weight/height).
You can find a local class or there are lots of HIIT apps and YouTube sessions.
5. Weight-Train
Weight training isn’t just for bodybuilders!
It’s for everyone and there are suitable exercises no matter what your age, weight or gender.
Great for getting lean, weight training targets specific muscles and builds them up, converting fat.
However, it’s best to combine weight-training with cardiovascular exercise for the greatest possible results.
Aerobic workouts will help you to burn calories but weight training builds leanness and strength, it’s really effective for trimming fat from the waist.
It’s not just about lifting enormous weights, you can use small dumbbells and kettlebells until your body gets used to pumping iron.
6. Swim
Swimming is a fantastic all-over body workout and it’s great for calming a busy mind too.
Going for a swim is cathartic, take it as leisurely as you like or power-up for an intense workout, even if you’re not a swimmer you’ll see the benefit.
A front crawl is excellent for toning the middle of your body because you twist as you move.
Try and swim two or three times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes, not only will you lose belly fat, but you’ll also increase your fitness levels.
7. Try Yoga
If you don’t like fast-paced exercise but know you need to do something to work your muscles, try yoga.
It’s a great workout for the body, albeit slow but you do need to also do some sort of cardio for maximum effect, even if it’s as simple as going for fast-paced walks two or three times a week.
Yoga trains the core to be strong and incorporates lots of long, slow movements that you hold in a pose.
This trains your muscles and elongates your body and that’s why yogis are so lean and slender.
Yoga is also mindful practice and helps you to feel calm and balanced so it has added benefit.
Other things to Do to Lose those Love Handles
Don’t forget that as well as exercise you need to think about your diet too, especially if you’ve noticed weight piling on.
Cut out refined sugar (that relates to sweets, cake, biscuits, buns, muffins, etc.) and don’t drink cans of sugary drinks either.
It’s always best to stick to water and try and consume at least 2 liters a day.
Water stops bloating as it flushes liquid out of your system and hydrates your whole body, it’s absolutely essential.
Don’t eat too late at night as the food won’t have time to digest properly, so much of it will turn to fat.
Try and reduce your carb intake too, especially potatoes, white pasta, white rice and other stodgy carbs.
You could try a Keto diet which eliminates carbs altogether pushing your body into a state known as Ketosis.
This is when your body uses fat as its energy source rather than carbs.
You could add more healthy fat to your diet, including olive oil, nuts, seeds, fatty fish and avocado.
They help you to feel full as well, so you’re less likely to reach for a sugary or high-carbohydrate snack.
Additionally, high-fiber foods are good for helping you to feel full.
As well as eating a healthy diet, a healthy lifestyle is essential.
Sleep well (at least 7 hours a night with a regular bedtime and waking time) and learn to cope with stress.
Stress is often a factor of weight-gain because many people comfort-eat to raise their serotonin levels.
If you do feel particularly stressed for a long period and you notice weight piling on, you might benefit from visiting your doctor to discuss options.
A Secret ‘Carb Trick’ That Burns Up To 1 Pound Per Day
If you’re like most women trying to lose weight… you diet, you count calories, you tear up the treadmill, and… nothing.
That’s how 40-year-old Sarah Donovan, an overweight mother with prediabetes was feeling…
She did “everything right” and never lost an inch.
Until she stumbled on this strange “carb-pairing” trick and burned away an unheard of 22lbs pounds in just 13 days.
And because of this one simple shift in her eating, she shed pounds and inches from her body without starving herself and without a lick of exercise!
With the same “carb-pairing” trick Sarah dropped a total of 37lbs in the FIRST month and she shocked her doctor by completely reversing ALL pre-diabetes symptoms!
If you’re a woman over the age of 25 who wants to reclaim her life inside the body she DESERVES, you should check it out for yourself.

How to get out of debt fast (…even if you’re dead broke)
Getting out of debt isn’t easy — but it is possible, even if you have no money, no assets, and no idea how to start. Check out these tweets from people who followed my advice and got rid of their debt forever:
Today, I’m going to teach you my five-step system for quickly paying off debt so you can join them too.
How to get out of debt fast: My 5-step system
Step 1: Use this tool to find out how much debt you REALLY have
Step 2: Choose your “plan of attack” for paying off debt
Step 3: Freeze your credit card debt — literally — to stop it from growing
Step 4: Follow this script to negotiate a lower interest rate (Saves you THOUSANDS)
Step 5: Tap into your “Hidden Income” to drum up an extra $1,000+/month
Bonus step: Turbocharge your debt payments with my favorite resource
Step 1: Use this tool to find out how much debt you REALLY have
You wouldn’t believe how much money people waste by skipping this step and blindly paying off any bills that come in with no strategic plan.
This boils down to the fact that people feel guilty about their debt. They’d rather bury their heads in the sand than look at the reality of the situation and do something about it.
This is exactly what credit card/loan companies want — for you to hide from your statement every month and just blindly send them the minimum payment thinking you’re getting out of your debt. They LOVE it when you do that.
The reality is that minimum payments dig your hole even deeper.
It might be painful to learn the truth but you have to bite the bullet. Then you’ll see that it’s not hard to end this bad habit. In fact, you can get the credit card companies to help you. Just look at the back of your credit cards for their number, call them, and ask them for the amount of debt you owe, the APR, and the monthly minimum payment on the card.
I challenge you now to step up and own your debt. You can do the hard work now, or the impossible work later.
Use this tool to track it (it’s the second link on this list). The chart looks like this:
It’ll help you find out how much you owe to each company and what your interest rates are.
Stop right now and do this.
Done?
Congrats! Taking the first step is one of the hardest parts — now you’re well on your way to a Rich Life.
If your total debt number seems high, remember two things:
There is a large group of people with MORE debt than you.
From this day that number is only going to go DOWN. This is the beginning of the end.
Once you know how much you owe, the next step in learning how to get out of debt is …
Step 2: Choose your “plan of attack” for paying off debt
Once you know exactly how much you owe, you’re ready to strategically attack your debt.
To do this, you need to prioritize which of your debts you’re going to pay off first — whether it be your credit card, student loans, whatever — based on the interest rate.
To get out of debt the absolute fastest, you’re going to want to pay off the loan with the highest interest rate first.
For example, let’s say Credit Card A has a balance of $1,000 and a 12% interest rate, and Credit Card B has $1,500 at 6% interest. You put down $150 total every month, paying the minimum payment (3%) on one and whatever’s left on the other. You’re going to save more money by eliminating Credit Card A first ($147 in total interest) vs Card B ($188).
Once you’ve decided what you should prioritize, it’s time to come up with a plan of attack.
When it comes to your student loans, you can actually save thousands of dollars each year — by paying down your debt more each month.
Yes, you read that right. You can save money by spending MORE.
Let’s say you have a $10,000 student loan, at a 6.8% interest rate, and a 10-year repayment period.
If you go with the standard monthly payment, you’ll pay around $115/month.
But check out how much you can save per year if you paid just $100 more each month:
Like I said before, paying the minimum digs you into a bigger hole. Even $20 more per month can save you huge amounts of money.
I’ve written about this before and linked to two great articles regarding the tactic. If you can contribute even a small amount more per month, the benefits can be significant. See for yourself by calculating your savings using this calculator.
Alternatively, you can use the “debt snowball” method, which I explain here (at around 2:00). Mathematically it isn’t the fastest method, but it’s designed to make you feel GREAT about making payments:
youtube
Step 3: Freeze your credit card debt — literally — to stop it from growing
If you ever expect to pay down your debt, you can’t add more to it.
That’s why you need to do the following things:
Take out your wallet.
Dump out all your credit cards.
Mail them all to Antarctica.
Well, maybe you don’t have to be that extreme … but the point is to remove all temptation of ever using your credit cards again until you’re out of debt.
Here’s my favorite tip: plunge your cards into a bowl of water and shove it all into your freezer.
Seriously.
Once you literally freeze your credit, you’ll have to chip away at a massive block of ice in order to get it back — giving you time to think about whether or not you want to go through with whatever purchase you were going to make.
Alternatively, you can lock them in a safe or have a friend / parent / sibling / whoever-you-trust hold on to them for you. As long as you’re not adding more to your credit card debt, any method is good.
Step 4: Follow this script to negotiate a lower interest rate (saves you THOUSANDS)
Not many people realize this, but you can actually save over $1,000 in interest with a single five-minute phone call.
Through simple negotiations, you can lower the APR on your credit card and put thousands of dollars back into your pocket.
I LOVE negotiating interest rates.
It can be crazy simple too — in fact, here’s a word-for-word script that many of my readers have used already to lower their interest rates:
YOU: “Hi, I’m going to be paying off my credit card debt more aggressively beginning next week, and I’d like to lower my credit card’s interest rate.”
CC REP: “Uh, why?”
YOU: “I’ve decided to be more aggressive about paying off my debt, and that’s why I’d like to lower the interest rate I’m paying. Other cards are offering me rates at half what you’re offering. Can you lower my rate by 50% or only 40%?”
CC REP: “Hmmm … After reviewing your account, I’m afraid we can’t offer you a lower interest rate.”
YOU: “As I mentioned before, other credit cards are offering me zero percent introductory rates for 12 months, as well as APRs that are half what you’re offering. I’ve been a customer for XX years and I’d prefer not to switch my balance over to a lower-interest card. Can you match the other credit card rates, or can you at least go any lower?”
CC REP: “I see … Hmm, let me pull something up here. Fortunately, the system is suddenly letting me offer you a reduced APR. That is effective immediately.”
It’s really that simple to save money in five minutes.
Make the call, and if you’re successful, do two things:
Celebrate your accomplishment (this is a big deal).
Make sure to adjust your debt chart from step one. You get to chop that big ugly interest rate down and lower your monthly payments.
Repeat this process for any other cards you can, and then move on to my favorite step.
Negotiate the impossible: How to save big on student loan debt
If you find that no matter how you run the number you’re not going to be able to pay your student loans off in any reasonable amount of time, it’s time to call your lender.
Look at the phone number on that monthly bill staring you down. Call them up and ask for their advice.
Seriously, I can’t emphasize this enough. Your lenders have heard it ALL, from “I can’t pay this month” to “I have five different loans and want to consolidate them.”
For your purposes, ask the following:
“What would happen if I paid $100 more per month?” (Substitute any number that’s right for you.)
“What would happen if I changed the timeline of the loan from five years to 15 years?”
If you’re looking for a job, you might ask, “What if I’m looking for a job and can’t afford to pay for the next three months?”
Your lender has answers to all these questions — and chances are they can help you find a better way to structure your payment. Typically, they’ll help you by changing the monthly payment or the timeline. Just think: With that one call you could save thousands of dollars.
Step 5: Tap into your “Hidden Income” to drum up an extra $1,000+/month
If you’ve followed along this far, you’re probably thinking, “This is great and all, but where do I get the money to pay down all these bills?”
I recommend four things:
Use the cash you’ve freed up from Step 4
Use money you have from your Conscious Spending Plan (this is how my friend spends over $21,000 a year on going out)
Tap into Hidden Income
Earn more money
I’ve already explained how to get cash from lowering your interest rates and you can learn more about creating a Conscious Spending Plan here.
Now, I want to show you how to get money with methods that’ll push your self-development to the next level and build a foundation for your Rich Life.
Tapping into Hidden Income
Instead of strict budgets or extreme frugality, I prefer to cut costs mercilessly on everyday bills. These are things like your cell phone, car insurance, and other monthly expenses.
Saving money on these everyday items is an easy way to free up cash to put toward your debt. The cool thing is, we can show you how to save $1,000 — without cutting back on the things you love — like these people did:
Just check out my Save $1,000 in a Month Challenge here.
It’s a great way to focus in on your willpower and expand your knowledge on how you spend money.
Earn more money
I’ve always believed that there’s a limit to how much you can save but no limit to how much you can earn.
What does that have to do with paying off debt? Well, imagine having an extra $1,000/month (or more) that you could put toward your bills.
The best part: it’s far easier to earn $1,000 than to slash $1,000 from your budget.
Just a few examples of ways to earn more money:
Get a $5,000 raise with a simple, 15-minute conversation with your boss.
Earn $1,000, $2,000, even $5,000 or more on the side, every month, while still keeping your day job.
Or — this is my favorite option — you could give yourself ultimate freedom and unlimited earning power with an online business.
Whatever you choose, the rewards can be huge and make a significant dent in your debt today.
Getting out of debt quickly is one of the best financial decisions you’ll ever make.
And earning more money is the secret weapon for paying down your debt as fast as possible.

Midnight Munchies
Prowl Prowl is the story of a group of friends who want to help their girl get to Chicago, “the big city,” but their car breaks down, and man eating cannibal monster people. Oh Prowl. You...movie you. Ok, I’ll start with this. This movie is flawed, and yet, it somewhat succeeds despite itself. Somewhat. The acting is good. It isn’t great, but it really isn’t bad. It might seem bad, because the script is terrible. It is. It is a terrible script, and no amount of acting can save it. The dialogue is just bad. And so, anytime anyone is talking in this film, it’s kind of a bad film. It’s not the worst film, but I can’t imagine you’d be anywhere near impressed. It takes about 27 minutes for this film to start getting to the spoop. 27 minutes to be introduced to our group of protagonists and their plight, and...it isn’t worth it. Considering the direction the characters end up going, I’m honestly surprised they wasted that much time on them. There’s a lot of foreshadowing for the main protagonist, if you want to call it that. I think foreshadowing, when used well, isn’t just outright telling you exactly what is going to happen. This one pretty much did. But when the spoop happens, the film is actually tense. Kind of. Mostly? The practical effects are ok. The blood is good. The make-up/prosthetic effects are probably the best thing about it. The creatures here are swift, and that’s mostly where the tension comes from. You blink, and you’re dead. They are also VERY flawed conceptually. These men and women swoop down like flying squirrels, but they aren’t flying squirrels, they’re cannibal people things. It’s silly. It’s silly looking when they jump. It looks like some cheap Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon shit. It took me out of the experience. It’s silly when they’re climbing up walls backyards with sneakers on. No. Credit where credit is due, when these creatures are not doing these specific things, they are fun, interesting and threatening. I gotta give the director some props, because I was able to get back into the grove of the film shortly after something like that takes me out of it. There is a lot of actual fast pace fun to be had, for about 40 minutes. After that it slows down, and dialogue, and shit I couldn’t care about because of dialogue and they probably shouldn’t have spent the first 27 minutes focusing primarily on the protagonist than the protagonist and her friends. Maybe then I would care more about the direction the film takes, but maybe not. The film takes place in a slaughterhouse, which sounds like a fun and creative setting, but they way things turned it really could have taken place at any abandoned facility. There is a core concept in this movie that is shitty, but it is surrounded by genuine spoopiness, which is then slathered in bad dialogue. It’s a hell of a thing. So, can’t suggest it. People were trying. The actors were trying. The director was trying. The editor was trying. The core of this thing just could not be elevated, so I cannot suggest seeing it. Splinter Splinter is the story of a couple that are going camping for their anniversary, become hostages for a criminal and his lady love, when all four of them stumble upon some fucked up zombie-esque shit. Splinter is a film the benefits from only having four characters to follow. These four characters, their relationship, and their development is excellent. Jill Wagner and Shea Whigham stand out (imo Shea Whigham is always a stand-out actor), but Paulo Costanzo put in a great performance as well. Even when we divulge into some back story, and even though I found one to be a little too troupish, the performance sold it. I believed it, I went with it, because I wanted to, because everything else was just so right. So, about everything else. The practical effects are awesome. Excellent effects, excellent blood, excellent design. The originality can be argued, I personally loved similar creatures in Resident Evil, and there is a The Thing vibe to the film, some people might compare it to The Last of Us even though the film came out first, but it really doesn’t detract anything from the movie. The movie is dark, it is suspenseful, it is thrilling, and it is fun as fuck! This movie actually has great little bits of dialogue, and there are great little tidbits of conversation all throughout the film. It also knows exactly how much information to give you. What it tells you makes sense, and to its credit, most of what it tells you you can probably already determine if you’re willing to give it some thought, and they leave the rest to the imagination. If there is one thing I think might be divisive, it how things are show when these creatures show up. I think, perhaps, it’s probably easiest described as a series of quick cuts. I personally love it, the cuts aren’t random, but are fit the movement of the creatures, I think it makes the whole thing feel extra crunchy. Oh yes, bois, there’s some crunch here. Unless you suffer from zombie fatigue, this is a must own as far as I’m concerned. Definitely.

On Meds Now!!! Letter to my mom
Zack and I went into work this morning about five thirty and finished up around eleven or so. I had a very, very productive day removing old worn parts in our hog, which is like a chipper, and installed all new parts. It was ninety four degrees out at ten o'clock and I was drenched by six thirty in the morning and stayed that way until I left and got into the comforts of my air conditioned Mazda. So let me tell you just a little bit about my visit with the shrink. Him explaining medication to me....."OK. I am putting you on a medication called Adderall. It is a stimulant. It pharmaceutical name is dextroamphetamine. It is an amphetamine. Is it methamphetamine? No. Can you become addicted to Adderall? Not at medicinal doses. Does it have side effects? Yes. Are all of them bad? No, not unless weight loss is bad to you. Is it a miracle drug? Yes. What will you do? Focus! You will be able to do your tasks and remember the smallest details. You will be much less forgetful. You will remember your conversations. Side effects are increased heart rate, but I am starting you at a low dosage so as to limit those types of side effects. We will monitor you and talk about differences you have noticed. The dosage will probably increase a little bit later on." So this morning I get up early and get to work early. This particular job/task that was priority on my agenda can be a bit challenging at times, just getting everything apart. Typically going back together is relatively smooth, but it is a tedious process where measurements are crucial and difficult to get precise. In the past, last year, I would show up, dreading the drive in, dreading getting the tools out, dreading the work, dreading absolutely everything and just wishing for the time to pass to be done to leave. Today you may be wondering? Today my first day on Adderall you may be anxiously awaiting to hear how it went????? OMG! Mom, hold on to your seat and let me explain. So I took the medicine, a small round blue pill with a line running through the middle if you need to half the dosage, at 4:40. I believe it took about twenty minutes to get into my system because I remember feeling just a slight tingle in my left cheek, something I've not experienced before. So I assume it took twenty minutes. I had yet another thirty minutes or there about to conclude my commute and turn into the parking lot at the mill. When I arrived at the mill I asked myself internally if I felt any different physically, walking around, moving, breathing air. Nothing. No difference whatsoever. I never felt negative about being at work, or the job which lay ahead. Zack followed me over the the hog and I looked at the surrounding area which was supposed to have been completely cleaned out, um especially the immediate area where I would be lying on my back for the next four hours, but it was not cleaned. OBSERVATION NUMERO UNO!! I was completely unphased. My mood was solid like granite. Unmoved like a mountain. Unwavering as a sheet of ice on a pond. What did I do you may ask? I got on my hands and knees and got after the cleaning at hand. In thirty minutes the area was cleaned and I was able to begin gathering the necessary tools the task would require. "Danny? I'm going to start the air compressor up. Go to the tool room. We will need to get".....and I rambled off everything I thought he could carry in one trip. "Ok Danny, good. Now lets get".....and again I rambled off everything else I knew we would need. "Paul, go over and clean that pathway up so nobody trips and gets hurt today." Zack, son? You are doing a good job their. Here, let me help you a minute and lets get this stuff pushed over there out the way. I began, with Danny's help to disassemble the hog. It was already nearly 90 degrees at seven a.m. I had already been drenched in sweat from the clean up and on top of that I am laying on swept but very dirty concrete. But I did not in the slightest bit have any issue with it. My mind was FOCUSED as it has not been in years, and I truly and honestly mean years when I say it. I felt complete, not lacking. And whats more is I had no physical effect that was noticeable. Was my heart rate elevated? Absolutely. I don't dilly dally, I work. That clean up was arduous and very physical, steady work. Was I out of breath or at any point did I have difficulty breathing or carrying on a conversation? Not in the least bit. I had the benefit of being able to focus, my mood and attitude were refreshingly positive and up and yet there was no physical high! I worked for five and one half hours, never letting up, going from one stage of the process to the next, not wandering off in my head, wondering where I put a tool or if I had forgotten to tighten this or that, as has been the NORM for years. No second guessing. When the job was nearing completion, the machine was shut and bolt locked, we gathered all the tools and checked the equipment to see if there were any stray tools laying around, none. I took the lock off the electrical disconnect and with much confidence walked to the starter and pushed the green button and hit the stop button after ten seconds. I then walked back out the the hog, leaned my ear in closely to hear if any noises were coming from within. The clearances between the parts had kept. I promptly turned, walked back to the starter pressing the green start button and this time I allowed the 250 horsepower motor to bring it to full speed, 1425 rpms. Once the starter was locked in we turned on the vibrating conveyor and watched ever so closely the beginning of a slab to get closer to the new cutting teeth and anvils where it would in glorious fashion meet its demise had I don't everything correctly. The wood met the teeth and the hog ate it with such ferocity that you could watch the wood blow apart. Mission accomplished. We loaded all the tools into the tool room after pressing the stop button on the hog, locked up, turned out the lights and went home. Now at that point I had noticed the previous hour kind of feeling what has been my normal self in that my mind felt tired, not as alert. So my assumption is that the four hours the pill was supposed to work for had passed. But now here is the kicker. Even though it was no longer effective on my mind the way it had been prior/earlier, my mood was still very good. This is day one!! I came home, took the second dose of my medication as the bottle directs, showered, went to HyVee and picked up my eye drip script, came home and talked with the kids and then wrote a very lengthy email to Roxanne about a number of things I had not been wanting to talk about, but said,"You know Will? This is four months now you've been avoiding this, now is the moment to end that. And I proceeded to write an email to her for an hour addressing the kids summer and the touchy subject of child support and considering an adjustment to the agreements. I wasn't very nervous nor am I now. I am at peace and I have been thinking a bit about music and playing music again. To wrap up that aspect of this communique let me just say that I am relieved to know and personally experience what my "shrink", Jeff, referred to as "A Miracle Drug". Because mom I will be very straightforward and honest here, I thought there was no way in God's green earth that taking a pill, that is non addictive, has few side effects and was affordable was going to adjust my mind and mood in such a way as to have restored me, Will Henley, to....well, to some aspect of normalcy. I truly thought I was going to continue to lose my temper, my memory and just become more and more an ass and with equal measure distance myself from people and social situations that have caused me so much stress and ill will towards my fellow man. Wow! I have my brain back mom. I can do things again without hesitation. I can do a five hour job and at the end not question if it was done correctly. Let me tell you about my conversations with people the last five years. Yes, I said five years. Don't get me wrong, it hasn't been every conversation, but I would say better than fifty percent. I would be face to face, direct my ears toward their mouth so as to hear clearly. And they were talking in an audible tone and level, yet the information my brain was exhaustively and incorrectly processing made it sound like mumble. I just could not focus on key words that made understanding possible. My comprehension was nearly non existent at times to the point of just nodding and shaking my head, turning and walking away as though I had understood everything said and questioning myself,"What the hell did they just say? What the hell is wrong with me? Do I have early onset dementia or something? Seriously, it has been such a very long and difficult road I've traveled for so many years, and it took its toll on marriages, jobs and my sanity. And for the very, very first time I have real hope I can cling to. There is no light at the end of the tunnel for I have emerged from the long hibernation into the sunniest of days to see with mine own eyes the beauty of being 100 percent aware of my surroundings and myself. I am in shock and awe and today, as with every day I've lived on this terrestrial ball GOD IS GOOD! I just can't begin to say enough about this. Oh, so after I wrote and sent the email, I sat down with the kids for a few, then called Jenn to come back to the room and I spoke with her about everything I just mentioned and explained to you, then we took Nicole's car to get the tires properly aired up, went to the grocery store, came home and I made homemade spaghetti with squash, onions, mushrooms, bell pepper, zucchini, vegan meatballs, garlic, basil and oregano with some very good quality balsamic vinegar along with a couple loaves of garlic bread. Normally when I get home I am inside, I do not ever go back out and do anything else. I have my life back and feel like a productive human being. Well I am going to sign off now. I'm not sure how much I've written but feel I have caused you to spend an eternity reading. Much love to you and Ben and we will talk soon. Love,Will

3 Mistakes NOT To Make In Your Morning Routine
Mary is a private coaching client of mine. She’s an ambitious, single mom who recently left her corporate job to launch a small business. She’s definitely in “startup mode.”
You can probably relate to Mary’s hopes and dreams of becoming financially free and living life on her terms, while building a business that helps people and supports her goal of traveling the world.
If you can, that means you probably also share one of her fatal flaws. Mary is a Type-A personality and she takes on too many commitments and responsibilities. She says “yes” to every opportunity that comes her way because she’s worried she might miss out on a connection, a breakthrough, or a deal.
Mary even takes this approach with her morning routine. She’s heard how important it is to do meditation, to take time for gratitude journaling, to exercise, to do yoga, to do free-form journaling (writing down all of her thoughts), and to watch a motivational video first thing in the morning.
As you can imagine, this morning routine takes a lot of time. Frustrated with this busy-ness, Mary recently emailed me.
“Craig,” she said, “I get up at 5 a.m. to get things done, and I still feel like I’m running behind by 7 a.m. when my daughter gets up. Once I get her breakfast and off to school, it’s nearly 9 a.m. and I don’t get through my email until nearly 10 a.m. By then I’m ready to go back to bed.”
Mary wasn’t making any progress on her routine, so I proposed a drastic solution.
“It’s time to put some of your morning routine on the chopping block,” I said.
Bruce Lee said, “It’s not about the daily increase but the daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.”
If you want to do GREAT things, you need to do FEWER things.
“Mary,” I said in my follow-up email to her, “Stop trying to do so much first thing in the morning. You can’t do meditation, gratitude journaling, a long workout, personal development reading, motivational video-watching, Instagramming, and yoga (or yoga while Instagramming!) all before breakfast. You need to cut some of these activities and focus on what matters, saving you time and stress.”
For example, I offered, here’s what I do in the morning to ensure that I move toward my big goals and dreams each day:
I wake up. I go to the bathroom. I splash water on my face, walk down the stairs, pet the dog for 30 seconds, and then sit down in front of my computer. I turn it on, put on my writing music (Chopin’s “Complete Nocturnes”), and open up a Word document with my most important daily writing task.
Then I sit there and do the work. Or as Brian Tracy says in his book of the same name, “I eat that frog.”
This is what Mary should do. This is what YOU should do.
If you are struggling to complete the most important tasks in your day—whether it’s writing a chapter for your book, doing your taxes, or preparing that PowerPoint presentation for the marketing team—you should wake up and get to work as soon as possible.
Some professionals, like authors Steven Pressfield and Stephen King, go through a non-work morning ritual before they sit down to work at 9 a.m. sharp. Pressfield, in his book, “The War of Art,” talks about going for a morning hike before returning to his house, putting on his writing uniform (his favorite sweatshirt), and sitting down at his computer to write. King also begins writing at 9 a.m. and sits there as long as it takes to complete his daily word allotment (2,000 words).
I don’t share the same routines as King and Pressfield (aside from writing in my favorite sweatshirt), but I do engage in morning rituals. As the owner of a coaching business—with many employees and clients to manage and connect with each day—my morning gets busy with phone calls and emails by 10 a.m. That’s why I must write before the sun—and civilization—rises.
If you want to do GREAT things, you need to do FEWER things.
Right now it’s nearly 5 a.m. and I’ve nearly eaten my frog. It wasn’t tasty—not at all. It was tough. My mind wandered, and my fingers wanted to dance over to the mousepad and open up the browser to check sports scores—a bad habit I picked up as a bored child on the farm.
Knowing my weaknesses, I designed a system to ensure my Perfect Mornings. When you control your morning, you own your day. When you own your day, you take big leaps toward success and creating your legacy, and that’s what “The Perfect Day Formula” is all about. (Click here to get a FREE copy of this life-changing book.)
But if you clutter your morning with the unessential—if your routine becomes about the daily increase rather than the daily decrease—you find frustration, struggles, and stagnation in your business, your career, and nearly every area of life.
This brings us back to Mary.
“Mary, you’re doing too much,” I said to her. “Just imagine what you could you do with an extra 15-20 minutes in the morning when you could focus on real work. We need to cut down on your morning self-care rituals. You just don’t have time for everything.”
So, I suggested these three things Mary could cut to ensure maximum productivity in her mornings (and they work for everyone):
First, don’t do redundant “New Age” activities.
Meditation, gratitude exercises, and journaling are all wonderful, helpful activities—in theory. But if they are taking up more than 20 minutes of your morning and you’re struggling to get other things done, then they are having the opposite of their intended effect.
My friend, business partner, and coaching client, Bedros Keuilian, recognized this. He tried to do meditation and gratitude journaling in the morning, and it just left him stressed. Neither felt natural to him. He decided that instead of forcing these activities into his schedule that he would simply get up, take his dog Cookie outside, and do a quick little gratitude exercise (one that he made up) while playing fetch with Cookie.
After 10 minutes, Bedros goes back inside, has a protein shake, and sits down to work on his biggest priority for the day. He usually has this completed before his kids wake up. Then his family has breakfast together and he sees them off before heading to the gym. He’s happy, productive, and grateful—not overextended like Mary.
Second, cut back on your morning exercise.
I made a career out of showing people they could get the same physical and mental benefits from short bursts of exercise as they can with long bouts of exercise. You don’t need a full hour in the gym. You can dramatically cut the length of your exercise routine, save time, and give those minutes to what matters in your business. I encourage you to start today. Instead of spending 60 minutes in the gym, cut back to 40 minutes. [Here are some helpful videos to get you started.]
Third, don’t do anything else until you’ve given 15 minutes of focused work to the number-one priority in your business.
For Mary, that means preparing for her daily sales calls. After taking my advice, she has been able to modify her sales scripts and practice her “close” out loud. This has quickly led to an increase in the number of converted prospects—without mad scrambles or jumbled sales calls.
Making these three changes eased the stress in Mary’s mind. She still felt inner peace and enjoyed good health from her self-care routine in the morning, but no longer felt rushed.
Hacking away at the unessential, and thus doing fewer things, allowed her to do GREAT things. Her business started growing faster. She was able to be present with her daughter during a leisurely breakfast rather than rushing her to get ready. Mary’s sales calls went smoother and her clients noticed a calmer demeanor in their interactions.
My challenge to you today is this: What is one activity that you could cut or stop in your morning routine that would save you 10-20 extra minutes and make a BIG difference in your life?
Put that on the chopping block.
Hack away so you can do greater things today.

Useful Tools for Editors: Daylight Savings Time Edition
Soundly
Soundly is a cool entry into the world of sound effects that I’ve been trying out recently. It differs from where you might find sound effects in that you don’t interact with Soundly via a web browser. Soundly uses its own desktop app which is what takes it a notch above most other sound effects libraries and search tools. But Soundly is also a service that delivers high quality sound effects right to your project via their desktop app. To gain all the benefits of Soundly a $15 monthly fee is required but there are some benefits that come from a free account. Dig through the Soundly FAQ for answers to a lot of these questions you might be asking.
The Soundly desktop application puts a lot of power right at your finger tips. Above you can see a woosh search that yields results both from the Soundly Pro cloud as well as sounds indexed on my hard drive.
At its core Soundly is the full service but I think the application has a lot to offer as well. In addition to the premium Soundly effects you can also access Freesound.org via the app if you so choose. Soundly can also index and search your existing sound effects that many editors have sitting around to access at a moment’s notice. That puts lots of sound effects options all in one place. If you so choose part of your subscription can be up to 10 GB of online storage to keep your sound effects in the cloud. The waveform preview is a necessity for sound effects browsing and a “dock mode” places the app out of the way. One of my favorite things is being able to highlight just a piece of a found sound effect in the waveform and drag that out to save it or just drag it into your NLE (depending on how your NLE manages media).
Dragging the sound effect to save it is a fast way to get to using it in your project.
When digging through the Soundly website you see a lot of discussion about ProTools but video editors can get great use out of it as well. The big question is this: Does a dedicated video editor need to pay a monthly fee for sound effects? That is for the editor to decide and many (most?) will answer no but depending on what you do or if you can get your company to pay for it Soundly might we well worth the investment.
Worx4 X
If you know the name Marquis Broadcast then you probably know their tagline is moves media. That’s perfect for one of their newest products Worx4 X. This little utility adds a much needed media management function to Final Cut Pro X in that it can take an edit/sequence/timeline/project and copy only the media used in that edit/sequence/timeline/project to a new location. The biggest triumph of this relatively basic NLE function that FCPX has yet to include natively is that it can trim the media used in the edit/sequence/timeline/project to include only what was used in the cut, with user designated handles. I consider this one of the must-have utilities for FCPX if your media types are compatible with that Worx4 X can do.
There’s not a lot to the setup of Work 4 X. The main thing to consider (and what will have the most affect on media size) is the media handle size.
You can see the dramatic reduction in project size here with a trimmed sequence for a 30 second promo out of a much larger edit.
I’ve had good success with Worx4 X (working mainly with all ProRes .mov media) but it’s worth noting some of the limitations especially when it comes to trimming media files as there are some that it can’t trim.  Check the information on the Mac App Store page for those and other limitations before you spend $45 on the application. There’s bit more info on this Marquis page but it would be nice it they could get all of the details and support for Worx4 X onto one single website. I don’t even see a link to their Worx4 support forums without googling it.
PrProBCC – Adobe Premiere CC 2018 Project Converter
I came across this little utility in a Premiere Facebook group and I haven’t tried it myself but when I read the description I did a triple-take. From the PrProBCC – Adobe Premiere CC 2018 Project Converter website:
PProBCC converts Adobe Premiere CC 2018 project files to be compatible with Premiere CC 2015.2 and Speedgrade 2015.1.
It’s a Windows app (though it says you can convert it to a Mac version) and I’m guessing there is a reason that Adobe doesn’t make backwards compatabilty as easy as this but since there is a free trial you can give it a whirl. The cost is around $10 US.
The creator NTown Productions has a few interesting products you might want to browse.
Storyboarder
Storyboarder from Wonder Unit is an amazing looking, FREE storyboarding app that looks like it’s a lot of fun to use. I say free but they do ask for your email to get a download link so just remember what they say about “free.”
This thing looks full of tools and the animation options will add another level of interactivity. The list of features is very extensive so I can’t help but keep wondering why it’s free. The developers address this very question in a profanity laden section of the website. This particular sentence is one that … well … a lot of people might not agree with: “Let’s be completely real – I’ve never known anyone working on dope ass shit to be paying for the software they use anyways.”
I know of and have worked on a lot of dope ass shit that was created on properly purchased and licensed software. If you don’t want to give them your email then hit up the direct download page (for Mac at least) but remember, install at your own risk.
SpeedScriber
SpeedScriber for Mac is officially out of beta and it’s worth mentioning once again as it’s by far the fastest and easiest tool that I’ve used for transcription and, more importantly, correcting transcription. That latter part can’t be glossed over. As amazing and accurate as cloud-based transcription can be if you need it perfect you still have to do some manual correcting and that’s where SpeedScriber holds a big advantage. The interface has been designed to make this tedious process as easy as it can be. It’s still not a fun process but a tool like SpeedScriber makes it both bearable and affordable.
I’ve used SpeedScriber both in the beta and now the shipping version for a few different articles here on PVC. The image above is from an upcoming interview about Lightworks. The hour + interview transcribed very quickly and I was able to get it corrected and ready for proofing in just a couple of hours. Plus there are integration with your NLEs. I tried out the Avid Media Composer integration recently using Avid’s script-based editing.
You don’t see Premiere Pro listed above but SpeedScriber has great Premiere integration as well. Click here for that look.
Creating a new account gets you 15 free minutes so you can try it for free.
Button Shortcuts
I always one to want to use the keyboard as much as I can but learning lots of keyboard shortcuts takes time. This little Mac menu-bar utility called Button Shortcuts provides a little dropdown menu with … button shortcuts. It’s free with a number of included apps but the interest to editors is the $3 Final Cut Pro X shortcuts and the $6 Photoshop shortcuts. I wish they’d add one for DaVinci Resolve!
The Cool Stuff in Premiere Pro
We’ve mentioned the book The Cool Stuff in Premiere Pro before but the second edition is special. It’s been updated with some new authors to help out the original author and Premiere expert Jarle Leirpoll and it’s now available in a massive 1200+ page print version. Personally I love the print version since I spend so much time on the computer I think it’s a great eye-break to use a book like this. True the print version isn’t searchable but it has a great Table of Content and an index so it’s very usable.

Give a close read to Jarle’s discussion on the book as it’s not a beginners book. You can get both an electronic and the print version ranging from just over $40 to $55. Check Jarle’s site for a discount.
