Some more dragons

To give more context to people! Yes this story sounds very silly but I was trying to make things work with the tons of headcanons I have lol

Geno (sky/ice), Fresh(rain/ice), and Error(night/ice) are all half-brothers (they share the same mother who is now dead) They live in the rainforest together between the Nightwing and Rainwing territories

Geno is sickly and often needs a scarf or blankets to make him feel warmer. He sustained injuries to an attack to the rainforest and Error found out he was an animus by wishing his brother to stay alive

Fresh is a very clever hybrid who can change the colors of his scales but not as well as full Rainwings. He tends to stay either bright colors mixed with his original white

Error learned he was an animus after an attack on the rainforest, he's best friends with Ink despite always getting mad at the happy-go-lucky rainwing (Error is cousins with Cross but that'll like never get brought up or found out by any of them)

Ink is just a regular Rainwing but is friends with the hybrids out of the village so people thing he's a little funky. He's an artist through and through and Error gives him a giant brush that makes his drawings come to life using his animus powers

Dream and Nightmare are both twin Nightwing/Sandwing princes (Nightmare got bullied too hard for being a "bastard prince" even though Dream is also one) Both are empaths and can feel other's emotions!

A massacre happens in the Sandwing Kingdom when the royal family (trying to stay pure) tries to kill Nightmare when Dream isn't around. Nightmare escapes, angry that his brother got better treatment than him, while killing many other dragons in the process

Blue is a royal Seawing guard in training even though his parents wanted him to be a cook and Red is a Skywing who is captive by the queen since he was experimented on by his father (scientist)

Reaper is an outcasted Nightwing due to accidentally killing people with just a touch (animus curse by xgaster) He uses it to his advantage with his Nightwing powers by being able to prophecy someone’s future or find parts of their past. He is known as this Reaper judge that gets sent for when giant disputes happen and the Queens of the tribes need to figure out who to punish. When he meets Geno, who is also animus touched to not die, Reaper is fascinated that he is able to touch Geno

The broad animus stuff is due to Xgaster (Nightwing who is part of a split tribe situation with eviler Nightwings lol) trying experiments on Nightwing eggs to make their dragonets stronger. I imagine its a group still like wanting to be better than every other tribe and resides in the old Nightwing palace

Cross is a Nightwing who is gonna stop his dad in the big storyline

MURDER TRIO! All of them are dragons that were outcasted and seen as incompetent or needed a home. They pledged their allegiance to the Sandwing prince Nightmare and promised to help him take the throne.

Dust is an animus prince in the Icewing tribe that went crazy after killing his siblings, he tends to be calm but becomes crazed easily and can kill easily with his powers (although he tends not to use them anyways and is just a very good fighter). He created a cloak to calm himself down and he tends to keep it over himself. He actually ran away because the judge (Reaper) was going to be sent to their tribe

Killer is a Rainwing that was captured and trained to fight in the now shut down Skywing arena. He was used as target practice for his changing scales and they even burned a target onto his chest so they'd always be able to see him even when his scales changed

Horror is a bigwings who watched all his sibs die during a famine in the Mud kingdom (due to drought). Older Mudwings tried to kill him for being a waste of space but he escaped and joined Nightmare.

New introduction! Giant lovable goofball at your service - and now I regret that this is a lore character 😭 I would love to explore Whale’s character and relationships with Stargazer and Parhelion in the future, she is so much fun) Warning: a big chunk of text under the cut! It dwells into Whale's background and Mortician's roots, her time as the leader of the squad and... well, there is a reason Breeze's part of the team now. (If you up for reading, please check it out! I spend a lot of time and effort writing this text and would really appreciate it :3)

Killer Whale lead the Morticians ever since they became a group, which was quite rare for the gang, but not that unwarranted for such a peaceful squad. She was a skilled fighter and enjoyed having a friendly duel from time to time, although not a lot of dragons wanted to try to fight her, as Whale was quite big for a seawing. However, despite the fearsome name, she was strongly opposed to unneeded violence. When it became apparent that the war was inescapable, she refused to join the seawing troops and fled her hometown, eventually meeting the Scavengers. A bunch of deserters and castoffs who shared close bonds reminded Whale of her lost family and friends. Their noble goal spoke to Whale, and she swore her loyalty to the gang. There she met two dragons that made their purpose helping victims of the war: one who healed and the other who would put to rest ones that cannot be saved otherwise – nightwing Stargazer and skywing-icewing hybrid Parhelion. Soon they became a trio: a healer, an undertaker and a warrior who keeps them safe. First Morticians. Loyal, brave and wise, Whale was respected and beloved by her team. Like all her life, Killer Whale woke up every day with the first rays of sunshine and got to scout, hunt and eventially wake everyone with loud laughter or even a tune - those days they didn't have to fear being heard so much. Like a giant ball of energy, she inspired and energized dragons beside her with passion and vitality. Despite their morbid craft, with her as a leader Morticians’ spirits were as high as they could be. Killer Whale surely had the biggest heart - although it was a bit fragile. With age, she started having troubles breathing after a lot of exercise, sometimes with a light pain in her chest and arms, but nothing too big, nothing to worry about. To Whale that is, Stargazer, who became her partner, was very concerned and begged her to take it easy while she searches for a solution. Whale was reluctant to agree, but she wasn't going to stop a healer from doing her job. Nevertheless, days gone by, pains never got any stronger and even stopped bothering Whale at some point, and her pulse always came to normal after a nice rest. In any other regards Killer Whale was as healthy as a horse, so Stargazer blamed it on a stressful year and tried not to think about it too much - Whale wasn't that bothered by the symptoms in the first place. Life goes on, and Morticians never without work, so everyone sort of forgot about it at some point. One day camp woke up to silence.

I based Killer Whale’s condition on cardiac ischemia, especially on the fact that this chronic illness can go completely symptomless (or with light symptoms) until it’s too late. I find it terrifying…  And now imagine Stargazer wake up next to her partner only to find out she passed away in her sleep without any warning signs. Bonus facts about Killer Whale: *Whale grew up at one of the islands of the Bay of a Thousand Scales as a fisher’s daughter, and her settlement had a very strong community. *She loved daisies, and these flowers grow on her grave. *Originally, I wanted to make her sandwing-seawing hybrid, but scrapped this idea.

It really saddens me when I think of how half-assed and sloppy the world building in WOF is. I’m not saying this to be spiteful, but it’s just disappointing because a lot of the concepts Tui writes are good and interesting, but sometimes these concepts are written as if they won’t ever need to be referenced again and are just something fun for the moment, and then when they ARE referenced again (as tends to happen in multi series books) she doesn’t seem to fact check herself or retro-actively changes the rules (animus magic, for example).

When I get irked about it, part of me tries to shrug it off like “Oh it’s just a children’s book about dragons, don’t take it so seriously” but it should be taken seriously. Just because a book is written for a younger audience doesn’t mean it should cut corners or lack good story building. 

I also read in an interview (Q#8 in the link below) in which Tui said it was her editor that actually suggested she write a book about dragons and idk that just explains a lot to me.
