I've found this strange tendency on tumblr to make it seem like Mary I is somehow wrong or bratty in how she acts towards her sister and Anne while her entire life is being stripped from her.

And to be fair, until Mary takes the throne, her relationship with Elizabeth is actually very decent.

Or like there's this implication that Anne should be absolved from her place in Mary's abuse, and somehow she's not a terrible person for her role in it.

Like historians seeing Anne as a bad person in relation to Mary is actually indeed accurate. Anne making threats about Mary's death, her general attitude towards her, and her attempts to reconcile with Mary at the expense of Mary losing everything she had been born into is a very accurate reason to call someone a terrible person lol.

it's not rocket science.

Like, "Woman who marries man and treats his daughter like crap because she refuses to acknowledge woman's position because doing so strips daughter of all rights." is not going to be seen as a saint, and in relation to mary, she shouldn't be lol.

Especially when it comes to how Cromwell and Chapuys see Mary. She's not a little doll as in they are playing with her but a little doll in the sense that she can be desired but never be sullied or defiled by them. She is a woman but yet still a girl, a daughter even. A person who desires love and affection and yes even sex perhaps but she is a Madonna a forever virgin in their gaze only to be worshipped never touched a touch too far.

After watching Tudors and Wolf Hall I find myself preferring Tudor's Jane Seymour more. Not because she's better or whatever, it's simply because the depiction of her fate is less creepy. In the Tudors, while like all women, she is a victim to Henry's lust, she is portrayed as having some control over her narrative. There is this excitement she has to be married, she has fire in her when she proudly wears Henry's locket before Anne. She isn't afraid to let it be known that Henry prefers her, and that her proximity to being Anne's lady is based on the fact that she will eventually replace her. Jane Seymour is a victim, don't get me wrong, but in the Tudors she is portrayed as someone who has control of things to an extent and she isn't viewed as an innocent bystander. In a funny way, she is very much a Margery type of character, who knows she is to marry a beast, but will work her ways to control him. She and Anne are both baddies, and IMO their relationship even as opposed to one another isn't meant to be like 'Anne is bad, Jane is good'. They both essentially did the same thing, they both won Henry's favor and gladly tore down other women to do it. They were also controlled by the men in their family, which is something that clearly cannot be ignored but i mean...you get me.

In Wolf Hall, not only is her story tragic but it's also creepy. She has no interest in Henry, she mentions to her brothers and Thomas that Henry comes onto her and she doesn't seem comfortable in the slightest. In fact, she's frightened. In Wolf Hall, at least as far as the show goes, I don't think she has any romantic interest in Henry. She is quiet, she is timid, and she is more importantly, terrified. She is portrayed as Tudor's Jane in the slightest, and she in her own way is very much controlled and spoken down on by the men around her. That is why it's so easy for Henry to take advantage of her. Henry pushes himself onto her in Wolf Hall, and she doesn't want it and she cannot consent to it. More morbidly, it is clear that, at least in the show she may have some affections toward others (this is mainly about her relationship with Thomas - which I plan to talk about elsewhere). But she is essentially branded, and seen as reserved for Henry. Jane more than likely had a way that she wanted her life to go, and although everyone around her talked down on her, spoke poorly of her, and didn't think much of her past Thomas, she still wanted to seek agency for herself and couldn't. Her life was over before it began. Henry also isn't as charming. he is more scary than charming. And that's what makes it creepy. The Tudors romanticizes it, puts Jane on par with Anne, and you admire that she is very much an active player in her own game. In Wolf Hall, she is not. And that's what makes it creepy. She eventually is pushed (tbh forced) to marry Henry, have his child and die from it, and none of this she wants. There is the eerieness of her having to be in close proximity with the man whom she might have had feelings for, but can't be with her and once again is forced into the role of a wife, queen and mother that she never once desired.

Hello I am once again playing sidequests, this time it's the Jorvik Gazette one, and here are my takes because I am an english major more than I am a horse girl

a) Think it's funny that they're kinda reinventing the wheel since the Jorvik Gazette Has existed before this quest, but ig it's to make it more of an established thing and not just a standard prop texture, either way cute

b) Love the sneak Goldspur lore + the Jorvik lore even tho that's just. basic history since that's how most countries (atleast up here in the north of Europe) did their mail/news sharing, still fun

c) ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL THE INSIDE JOKES, this chain is fucking filled to the Brim with inside jokey humor, like the GED workers at the unfinished areas and MC's reputation and especially horse island, I vastly prefer them doing memey humor in this way as inside jokes rather than the straight up meme references that have been Very tired by now (and also sometimes drags the writing quality down with it, this is way better and feels more natural too)

d) To continue on the last point, love how they also use this questline to be all "We promise we haven't forgotten this" about Evelyn and Marchenghast (also as the only Luciana stan bonus points for her being featured :3)

e) CANNOT believe we have a canonical SSO breakup

Tldr, Cute and Fun! The inside jokes hitting makes up for the premise being completely continuity breaking, but it's a minor continuity breakage and as I said it's more reinventing the wheel than destroying the wheel which is very par for the course and part of the agreement in playing MMOs

Also day one gave me almost 200 exp? I got 195 if I calculated it correctly (also turns out I'm closer to lvl 24 than I thought cause I am closer to 7000 EXP being left than 8000, so eh. neat. As in I have 75 exp left until I have 7000 exp until lvl 24)

I think it really captures something about the experience of watching the show and realizing in that hopeless, lovesick kind of way that there's no way to go back in time and save all of them. I still get teary whenever I think about this story or hear the song. It's one of those fics that's not just good, not just great, but somehow also really fucking IMPORTANT. this story MATTERS. you should absolutely read it and save it and imprint it onto your heart. I know it's imprinted onto mine.)

Up In Our Bedroom by @steeseman (ICONIC. really one of those pillars of the community type fics, y'know? it's funny and it's sweet and it's painful and the hot parts are HOT. clearly written with SO much care, and SO much love, and SO much precision. every single word packs a punch. absolutely one of my top reads of all time, across time, across fandoms)

When the bones are good by @aramblingjay (a really incredible post-war fic, such a beautiful, rich writing style!! isn't afraid to dig at the hard parts - john's relationship with alcohol, their nightmares from the war. stunning visuals -- the author uses setting and place and motion in such a tangible, real way. I can still see the little hideout spot in my mind's eye, even now. one of those fics that's just. such a treasure to the fandom.)
