Cine: The Half of It (2020)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Yes, God, Yes (2020)
Tumblr media
The obvious direction Yes, God, Yes could’ve gone is the comedic route. It also had equal potential as a highly critical drama. Writer/director Karen Maine finds the delicate balance in between. This coming-of-age story has plenty of laughs and offers a little bit of food for thought too. I can think of a lot of people who will recognize themselves in this film like I did.
15-year-old Alice (Natalia Dyer) goes to a Catholic high school, meaning her sex-ed class consists of “it’s only done once you’re married, and the only objective is procreation”. She struggles to make sense of the inklings of sexual desire developing inside her. Attending the school’s 3-day weekend retreat both increase her confusion and provides several unexpected temptations.
What makes the movie funny is Alice’s blessed ignorance. She might’ve never seen any pornography, have any idea what masturbation is like, or understand what "tossing a salad means" but her classmates, teachers, and we do. She makes you laugh in an "it's so cute you don't know" kind of way but you also sympathize. We’ve all been there at one point or another. Seeing this young woman slowly figure things out brings you back to simpler times. You're chuckling at yourself too because as hard as things might've been back then, it turned out alright in the end. Her ignorance lands her in a couple of scenarios where she has to scramble to not get caught or avoid suspicion and that’s a lot of fun to watch.
Despite the wacky scenarios, Yes, God, Yes always remains grounded. Like her, I remember the first time I saw Titanic. Everyone around me said that moment where the guy falls and hits the propeller was the best scene. I had a different moment in mind but never wanted to admit it out loud. I also remember less-than-stellar sex ed classes that left me with a lot of questions I was too embarrassed to ask. It deals with the hypocrisy you’ll experience from many of the people who talk about abstinence as the only solution to your growing desires without being mean-spirited about it. You expect Alice to be shocked. What's more interesting is that a lot of the stuff she sees, she likes even if she doesn't understand why.
The movie is honest but doesn’t feel so autobiographical to be elusive to anyone watching. The performances are spot-on, as is dialogue, setting, and relationships. Yes, God, Yes is only 78 minutes long and that’s perfect. If it went on for more, there’d be sub-plots about closeted students/staff members who feel ostracized, we’d probably get some big but phony laughs at the expense of Alice’s parents, and escalating shocks and gross-outs, all of which would ultimately add nothing. As a directorial debut, Karen Maine has made a great impression. You're left with nuggets of wisdom, a smile on your face, and a warm feeling inside. (January 17, 2021)

Shorts : Buckets (2017)
Tumblr media
Digging through Amazon Prime for short films has become a hobby of mine.  As a short filmmaker (with hopes of one day writing/directing features), it’s interesting to see how directors can take narratives that could be somewhat complex and expansive and boiling it down to the length of a sitcom episode, if not less.  My latest find was the Julia Jones award-winning short film Buckets, a rumination on love that certainly left an impression on me.
A young girl (Olivia Nikkanen) finds herself falling in love with a young man (Wolfgang Novogratz) she admires, but things immediately start off kilter... the young man uses the girl continually to do everything for him : tie his shoes, do his homework, finance him, sleep with his friend, take a beating for him, and even literally give her heart for him.  As the young girl gives more and more of herself, she realizes how one-sided the relationship is.  This is all taken into account when she is graciously offered a second chance with the knowledge of being used in tact, literally pulling away the facade of the relationship and exposing it for the charade that it is.
Buckets is a contemplation on giving yourself up completely for love.  The young girl is smitten with her lover, which he instantly realizes, and slowly grooms her from small favors into huge sacrifices.  It gets to the point where the young girl’s life literally stops for her admirer... the young man continually ages, from a high school-age peer to a senior on his death bed, while the young girl remains constantly in her school uniform, innocent to the ways of manipulation she is facing.  The way that she falls into the rhythm of being completely at her crush’s beck and call is disturbing in a way that usually only psychological thrillers can reach.
The film is one of the most pessimistic looks at love to date, fitting right in with many people’s feelings and thoughts about modern day romance.  The humor is extremely dry and dark, almost imperceptible if you are not paying attention.  Nothing about this film will make you go out into the world feeling lifted and ready to fall in love, but it will definitely make you reflect on the way that you navigate in regards to the people you put on a pedestal.
One of the elements that truly stands out in this short is the minimalist and unique set design.  Most every set is light on realism and heavy on a stage-like presentation, sometimes even cutting from rear projection of outside locations to complete black.  The lighting sweeps through the film like a spirit, constantly changing and informing the viewer as to the emotional tone of each scene.  The transitions from scene to scene are slick, interesting and highly stylized, be they remnant connections from experience to experience, or even the use of stagehands to shift the decor to whatever is suitable for the scene.
While there are a handful of actors and extras that populate this world, the lion’s share of the performance weight falls in the lap of the leads.  Olivia Nikkanen manages to portray herself as completely willing to sacrifice herself for her love without coming off as completely pitiful, keeping an underlying edge at bay throughout her torture.  Wolfgang Novogratz brings uncharted levels of narcissism to the table, managing to be totally and completely detached from his lover and completely unlovable in his own right.  Of all the smaller roles that populate the film, the standout is Jose Guns Alves, with his strong desire to use his new brass knuckles and old violent tricks on the young woman.
Films like these truly serve as a creative inspiration.  Thank god for streaming services like Amazon Prime that provide a possible outlet for up and coming filmmakers to give their films the widest audience possible... I may not have come across Buckets otherwise, and I’m certainly glad that I did.

wolfgangnovogratz: This is my friend @sofiacarson . So, we made this movie together. We worked very hard, rehearsed a ton, and had way too many laughs. But, what you don’t know, is that Sofia was as committed, passionate, and professional as any actor I’ve worked with so far in my short career. However, what I respect even more about her, is her values with her family and the people she cares about. Sofia and I connected on a lot of similar beliefs and principles. I call her “The Next Jennifer Lopez,” because I know she has the talent, work-ethic, and ambition, to do whatever she dreams of. It was an honor being the Nick to her April, and I’m proud to call her a friend in this business. #feelthebeat #netflixfamily #netflix #netflixfilm

wolfgangnovogratz When I first read the script for Yes, God, Yes, I was so impressed with the wit, intelligence, and personal feeling of the story. Our writer/director @karen__maine has crafted an original, humorous, and intimate movie loosely inspired by experiences from her own life. It’s amazing that this is her first feature film, as she was so confident, at-ease, and in-command on set. She knew exactly what she wanted, was so specific in her direction, and was really able to connect with all of us actors. I am so thankful to her for giving me the opportunity to be part of her film debut, and I’m so proud of all of her hard-work. Congratulations Karen!
