Jiaolong
Jiaolong (pinyin: jiāolóng; Wade–Giles: chiao-lung) or jiao (chiao, kiao) is a dragon in Chinese mythology, often defined as a "scaled dragon"; it is hornless according to certain scholars and said to be aquatic or river-dwelling. It may have referred to a species of crocodile.
A number of scholars point to non-Sinitic southern origins for the legendary creature and ancient texts chronicle that the Yue people once tattooed their bodies to ward against these monsters.
The Shuowen Jiezi dictionary  glosses the jiao as "a type of dragon (long), as does the Piya dictionary, which adds that the jiao hatch from eggs. The Bencao Gangmu states this also, but also notes this is generally true of most scaled creatures.
Tumblr media
Jiao eggs are about the size of a jar of 1 or 2 hu capacity in Chinese volume measurement, according to Guo Pu's commentary; a variant text states that the hatchlings are of this size. It was considered that while the adult jiao lies in pools of water, their eggs hatched on dry land, more specifically on mounds of.
The jiao did eventually metamorphose into a form built to fly, according to Ren Fang's Shuyi ji , which said that "a water snake after 500 years transforms into a jiao; a jiao after a millennium into a dragon (long), a long after 500 years a horned dragon, a horned dragon after a millennium into a a winged dragon".
The hujiao or "tiger jiao" are described as creatures with a body like a fish and a tail like a snake, which made noise like mandarin ducks. Although this might be considered a subtype of the jiao dragon, a later commentator thought this referred to a type of fish.
The bestiary's fifth book, "Classic of the Central Mountains" records the presence of jiao in the Kuang River and Lun River. Guo Pu's commentary to Part XI glosses jiao as "a type of dragon that resembles a four-legged snake". Guo adds that the jiao possesses a "small head and a narrow neck with a white goiter" and that it is oviparous, and "large ones were more than ten arm spans in width and could swallow a person whole".
A description similar to this is found in the Piya dictionary, but instead of a white "goiter (ying)" being found on its neck, a homophone noun of a different meaning is described, rendered "white necklace" around its neck by Visser. Other sources concurs with the latter word meaning white "necklace" (or variously translated as white "tassels"), namely, the Bencao Gangmu quoting at length from Guangzhou Ji by Pei Yuan:
The jiao measures 10 chi or more in length. Snake-like in appearance, but it has four feet. The shape broad and shield-like, it is small-headed and thin-necked. On the neck there are white tassels. Its chest is sienna brown and its back flecked with blue-green spots. Its flanks resemble brocade-work. On its tail there are fleshy rings. The largest attain several arms' spans around.   —adapted from Luo tr. 2003:3508. "Vol. 43: The Category of Animals with Scales", Bencao Gangmu.
A later text described jiao "looks like a snake with a tiger head, is several fathoms long, lives in brooks and rivers, and bellows like a bull; when it sees a human being it traps him with its stinking saliva, then pulls him into the water and sucks his blood from his armpits". This description, in the Moke huixi, was considered the "best definition" of a jiao by Wolfram Eberhard.
The description as "scaly" or "scaled dragon" is found in some medieval texts, and quoted in several near-modern references and dictionaries.
The Guangya defines jiaolong as "scaly dragon; scaled dragon", using the word lin "scales". The paragraph, which goes on to list other types of dragons, was quoted in the Kangxi Dictionary compiled during the Manchurian Qing dynasty. A similar paragraph occurs in the Shuyi ji and quoted in the Bencao Gangmu aka Compendium of Materia Medica:
Jiaolong.. [Li] Shizhen says: The book Shuyi Ji by Ren Fang:: The jiao is a kind of dragon. As its eyebrows cross each other, it is called jiaolong. (jiao ≅ come across). The jiaolong has scales. The variety with wings is called yinglong. The variety with horns is called qiulong. The variety without horns is called chilong ...   —Luo tr. 2003:3508. "Vol. 43: The Category of Animals with Scales", Bencao Gangmu.
Several texts allude to the jiao being the lord of aquatic beings. The jiaolong is called the "god of the water animals". The Shuowen jieji dictionary states that if the number of fish in a pond reaches 3600, a jiao will come as their leader, and enable them to follow him and fly away". However, "if you place a fish trap in the water, the jiao will leave". A similar statement occurs in the farming almanac Qimin Yaoshu (6th c.) that quotes the Yangyu-jing "Classic on Raising Fish", a manual on pisciculture ascribed to Lord Tao Zhu (Fan Li). According to this Yangyu-jing version, when the fish count reaches 360, the jiao will lead them away, but this could be prevented by keeping bie 鱉 (variant character 鼈, "soft-shelled turtle").
Jiao and jiaolong were names for a legendary river dragon. Jiao 蛟 is sometimes translated as "flood dragon". The  Yuhu qinghua says people in the southern state of Wu called it fahong "swell into a flood" because they believed flooding resulted when jiao hatched. The poem Qijian ("Seven Remonstrances") in the Chu Ci uses the term shuijiao " or water jiao.
The Shuowen Jiezi does not commit to whether the jiao has or lacks a horn. However the definition was emended to "hornless dragon" by Duan Yucai in his 19th century edited version. A somewhat later commentary by Zhu Junsheng stated the contrary; in his Shuowen tongxun dingsheng Zhu Junsheng explained that only male dragons (long) were horned, and "among dragon offspring, the one-horned are called jiao 蛟, the bicorned bicorned are called qiu 虯, and the hornless are called chi 螭.
Note the pronunciation similarity between jiao 蛟 and jiao 角 "horn", thus jiaolong 角龍 is "horned dragon".
Lexicographers have noticed that according to some sources, the jiao was a dragoness, that is, a dragon of exclusively female gender.
Jiao as female dragon occurs in the glossing of jiao as "dragon mother" in the Buddhist dictionary Yiqiejing yinyi, and the gloss is purported to be a direct quote from Ge Hong's Baopuzi. However, extant editions of the Baopuzi does not include this statement. The Piya dictionary repeats this "female dragon" definition.
As aforementioned, jiao is fully capable of devouring humans, according to Guo Pu's commentary.
It is also written that a green jiao which was a man-eater dwelt in the stream beneath the bridge in Yixing County. The war-general Zhou Chu in his youth, who was native to this area, anecdotally slew this dragon: when Zhou spotted the man-eating beast he leaped down from the bridge and stabbed it several times; the stream was filled with blood and the beast finally washed up somewhere in Lake Tai where it finally died. This anecdote is also recounted in the Shishuo Xinyu and selected in the Tang period primer Mengqiu.
Other early texts also mention the hunt or capture of the jiao. Emperor Wu of Han in Yuanfeng reportedly shot a jiao in the river. The Shiyiji has a jiao story about Emperor Zhao of Han . While fishing in the Wei River, "he ...caught a white kiao, three chang [ten meters] long, which resembled a big snake, but had no scaly armour". The Emperor said: 'This is not a lucky omen', and ordered the Ta kwan to make a condiment of it. Its flesh was purple, its bones were blue, and its taste was very savoury and pleasant.
Three classical texts repeat a sentence about capturing water creatures at the end of summer; "attack the jiao, take the to "alligator", present the gui "tortoise", and take the yuan "soft-shell turtle"."
It has been suggested that the jiao is not a creature of Sinitic origin, but something introduced from the Far South or Yue culture, as well as the Hundred Yue people.
Eberhard concludes that the jiao, which "occur in the whole of Central and South China", "is a special form of the snake as river god. The snake as river god or god of the ocean is typical for the coastal culture, particularly the sub-group of the Tan peoples (the Tanka people)". Schafer also suggests, "The Chinese lore about these southern krakens seems to have been borrowed from the indigenes of the monsoon coast".
The onomastics surrounding the Long Biên District is that it was so-named from a jialong "flood dragon" seen coiled in the river.
It is recorded that in southern China, there had been the custom of wearing tattoos to ward against the jiaolong. The people in Kuaiji adopted such a custom during the Xia dynasty according to the Book of Wei. The Yue created this "atropatic device" by incising their flesh and tattooing it with red and green pigments.

When the past comes back with bite
Pairing: Spike x vampire!reader
Request: Last anon here! Could you write smth where spike meets his ex he stil got feelings for at wolfram and hart, because w/h is settling her super important demon divorce for her?(maybe her hubby is a demon prince or whatever) and during her marriage she changed from shy sweatheart the a bamf? Your work is AWESOMEEEE btw
Warning: cute anecdote(s) about the reader killing people. Swearing. Mention of everyone Spike’s been with.
A/N: Set in Angel S5 so spoilers if you haven’t seen it. I stole demon prince Barvain from an episode of Buffy. I can get a bit carried away with the back story sorry about that lol
Tumblr media
You had been inside the office so long the walls were starting to close in on you. It was getting so desperate you had debated opening the necro-tempered windows and just allowing yourself to be committed back to the earth. This was taking its toll. You were speaking to your lawyer, Mr Gunn, trying to settle what had been a long and messy divorce. And not just messy because you had ‘accidentally’ killed your last lawyer when he suggested that your soon-to-be-ex-husband got the pay-out he didn’t deserve.
To say your husband was a demon prince, was to be hugely inaccurate. You know those emails you get with the sender claiming to be a ‘demon prince sitting on a large pile of jewels just waiting to be given away’? Well, if someone hadn’t heard or received them, they were lucky because his scam had snowballed and taken on many forms over the last few years as humans and demons alike actually fell for it.
“Gunn, this isn’t good enough! I want to speak to the big man”
“Uh, look, you don’t wanna bother him with this, I can sort you”
“I want to speak to Mr Angel. Now” You changed into your game face, but it was just for show. Gunn had really been trying for you, he even got another lawyer upgrade so he could find you more loopholes. He agreed, having heard what you did for a living, not to mention the activities you got up to in your free time. As you were walking through the corridor towards Angel’s office, you heard a familiar voice.
“Y/n… it’s, uh, been a while” the voice spoke and you couldn’t help turning around.
As your eyes connected, your past flashed before you. Stolen moments together with devotion dancing around you like reflection from a kaleidoscope. Your shared love blossoming in dark hideaways, the only sweet thing being your affection for each other.
“Spike!” You exclaimed, moving to hug the vampire you had spent decades with before you had found your husband. This wasn’t how you usually greeted people now, the smile so bright it almost made you cringe but you couldn’t help it. It was really him.
His hand lingered as he hugged you back. He leant into you, as if he wanted to stay there for a while. As if he hadn’t felt and embrace like that in a long time. Your relationship had ended as amicably between you as it could have done, knowing you both needed to part ways. It was one of those, right person, wrong time deals.
“Damn, you know each other? I should have guessed” Gunn said, surrendering and walking past you both. You were one of his most difficult clients. Spike frowned, you were his opposite, how had Gunn decided that? You had been a sweetheart, the one person to soften his evil nature before he had fought for his soul. You were so shy and kind, he had been convinced you had to have a soul hidden on you somewhere.
“How have you been?” You asked, cutting in before the inevitable questions about your very public divorce. He looked panic-stricken at the question, unsure of how exactly to chronicle everything that had happened since you last saw him. He had got back with Drusilla again – big mistake; gone to a little place called Sunnydale; fallen in love with a slayer – didn’t last; and fought to get a soul. He started to open his mouth to say something, but he was cut off by your attention switching to a very grand-looking demon sauntering your way. This, of course, was your husband, the demon prince, and his six-person entourage he never went anywhere without. Your honeymoon wasn’t pleasant. Apparently, he was being represented by a lawyer here too.
“Well, if it isn’t the demon formerly known as my husband” Your smile so achingly fake it was hard to keep up.
“Barvain, demon prince” He tried to shake Spike’s hand but he just stared, crossing his arms.
“Sorry, uh, I don’t care mate” Spike said, looking back at you to try to catch your eye. But your eyes were locked with your ex’s. Staring him down in a way you were often feared for. After a moment of thinking, Barvain’s eyes sparkled, he recognised the description you had given of one of your old lovers.
“Oh, this is the spike? I thought he’d be a little more impressive, all things considered”
“Oi-” Spike started, but you spoke over him.
“Can it, prince of the four corners of fucking nothing”
“Didn’t see you as someone that would run back into a man’s arms like that, but I guess he was always your weakness” He took credit for ‘building you up’ and ‘making you strong’ but your change in attitude was absolutely nothing to do with him.
“Just sore that I’m not crying over the very painless loss of you?” You roll your eyes.
“Yeah, the crying. Tough on the outside but a crumbling mess over your precious Spike inside - I thought marrying you would set you right, but it just made you a vindictive bitch” he quipped, his entourage laughing and joining in as he spoke.
“All right, Barvain, that’s it” You decided, easily changing into your game face and landing blow after blow on the various demons and men that started to walk towards you when you ran at your ex. You easily gained the upper hand, dusting a few vampires that had been taunting you with two swift movements. You went to attack a human but Spike pulled you back both times you tried it. Eventually, you rounded on your ex. If you hurt him, it wouldn’t do you any good - you just wanted to show him you weren’t scared of him. But Spike didn’t know this, so he pulled you back away from him as some lawyers scurried into their offices to lock themselves in so they weren’t caught up in the fight.
Spike had pulled you back but not before you thinned the demon half of his entourage in the process, dust cascading around the corridor like snowfall. You had become somewhat of a fighter. Actually, that was being modest, you had mastered several martial arts, aced weapons training and had made serious money off your talents. People actually came to you if they needed someone threatened or taken out. You were well known and people paid you a lot for it, more than any scam your ex could come up with, hence the messy divorce.
Barvain knew he wasn’t winning in a fight against you, which is why you usually only spoke through lawyers, so he departed with two of his entourage left trailing behind him. Spike turned to you, a mix of impressed and confused. Had he missed something? You were badass all of a sudden. You had never so much as looked at someone wrong when he knew you. He couldn’t help admit that there was something elegant about the way you fought, no matter how brutal.
“Don’t tell me you actually went out with that git” Spike asked, apparently in a bit of a daze. He wasn’t entirely sure he hadn’t just dreamed you mercilessly beating up that group without so much as a pause for an unneeded breath. It was so different from the meek person he had once fallen for. He could see it was still you, but you had gotten tough.
“I fucking married him!” You sighed, checking your knuckles for any damage and shrugging.
“You never used to swear”
“You never used to care if I killed people” You said softly, not that you ever really had when you had been with him. You ate when he went out and found someone for you but never really went hunting for yourself. You had been shy talking to people, even humans, to try and get them to come with you into an alley to feed. This became a problem when you and Spike had parted ways, you had stuck to animal blood for the most part. Until, your darling husband had all but driven you to killing. You had a lot of free time on your hands after you were married and it was a surprisingly nice tension release.
You both stared at each other for a moment, you were now stood agonisingly close together. Feelings both of you had never quite forgotten igniting easily. Your gaze never faltered from the other, until Spike finally spoke up, “Drink then?”
“Oh, you bet” You confirmed, following him out.
“To love” He toasted sarcastically, as your bottles clinked together at the bar he had brought you to. Apparently, there was a nice onion flower they served here. You took a sip of your drink, watching him. You had noticed the difference as soon as you cast eyes on him.
“You know, you’re a little different than I remember… tamer perhaps” You teased lightly, his eyes searching your face as if he were trying to memorise every feature, every expression you made in case you disappeared from his life again. Your confidence was so new to him, he really liked it. You had blossomed since he last saw you, but your face was exactly the same.
“You heard about that?” he asked finally, wondering if this meant he was going to have to fight against you one day.
“I didn’t believe it at first, a soul suits you though” You complimented him, he had always been so gentle with you but it was so fascinating to see how he coped with a soul.
“And your new attitude suits you” He added, a nod of approval and a smile on his lips as your eyes locked. He had never once stopped thinking about you. He had been with people since you, Drusilla for a while. Harmony, even the Slayer. But even through that, his mind had always wondered to you. Thinking what you might have been up to. Wishing you had stayed in contact. Hoping against everything that you had kept yourself safe, not getting yourself caught. You had been so sweet, he had been scared you would have let someone dust you for being an inconvenience.
The look in his eyes told you he was reminiscing as you were, remembering the times you had spent together. He moved in, closing the gap between you, lips meeting yours so gently you were surprised it was him. After you adjusted, the kiss as sweet as the one you shared to say goodbye, his hand moved to cup your cheek as you rested a hand on his chest.
The kiss reminding you of how you were back then. How you were his. You wouldn’t change back to how you were, but you wouldn’t mind getting to know him again. Your lips moving against each other, as if no time had passed. He clung onto you, as if he were scared you were an apparition of his own design. He tried to deepen the kiss but you knew it wasn’t wise. You were still technically married after all. You moved from him, smiling and telling him you should go, getting up to leave.
“Will I see you again?” he asked, the desperation in his eyes fuelled by more than the one beer he had been nursing since you arrived at the bar.
“Oh, Spike, I really hope so” You said honestly, smiling at him before sauntering out of the bar, knowing for a fact that he was watching you walk out.

During the era when Walther von der Vogelweide, Wolfram von Eschenbach and numerous other minstrels, were exalting Love, the month of May, the Grail and the Rose Garden, or even the Mountain of Venus in their poems — and the people preferred these songs far over those in Latin of the Church or of the legends of the saints —, Wartburg was the theatre of the most celebrated tournament of master-minstrels. This took place in 1207. The old poem of The War of the Wartburg Singers does not say whether or not Tannhäuser took part in the jousting; it also remains silent on the fact that Tannhäuser could have loved Saint Elizabeth, but tells us simply  that he took himself to the kingdom of Lady Venus’ underground pleasures.
A Minnesänger named Tannhäuser (or Tanhuser) lived and composed in Vienna, between 1240 and 1270, at the court of Duke Freidrich II of Babenburg. After the death of his protector, he squandered all the latter had given him and embarked upon an adventurous existence, which led him to join the Crusades and set off for Palestine. His poems belong to the decadent period of Minnesäng: it is in his songs for dancing that Tannhäuser shows himself to be most at ease, as he leads the round dance and plays the violin until the strings break or the bow snaps.  The second Tannhäuser, the unfortunate one, tortured by doubt as to his soul’s salvation, who entreated the goddess Venus to allow him to leave. With a heavy heart, she granted him permission. So the repentant set off on pilgrimage to Rome where he arrived with bloodied feet. He threw himself at the Pope’s feet — Urban IV, it is said — and pleaded for forgiveness of his sins. But the Pope, holding a dead branch in his hand, said, “When this dead branch bears roses, you shall obtain your pardon. Thus, be damned!” — As soon as was possible Tannhäuser returned to the side of the more indulgent Lady Venus. Before forever burying himself in the marvellous mountain, he would bless once more the sun, the moon and his cherished friends, who could only have been the stars. Then he enters the mountain. However, on the third day, splendid roses bloomed on the dead branch, that the Pope was holding in his hand. Messengers were immediately sent into every country, to make known the news of this Grace from Heaven to the unfortunate. Wasted effort! Tannhäuser had long been living by the side of Lady Saelde. He had become blessed without Rome.  It has often been doubted that a link exists between the Tannhäuser of legend and the Minnesänger. The most common hypothesis is the following: “A poet of the thirteenth century might have had the idea to circulate his compositions under the allegorical name of Tannhäuser”. This is most likely, as names are even more alluring when they conceal a divinity. A third Tannhäuser must have been a god…!  The Bavarian chronicler Johannes Turmayr von Abenberg, better known as Aventinus, has bequeathed us a curious account. It is half a millennium old. Here is what he recounts: “I discover that Germans and their cousins invaded Asia under the command of a king, whom the Goths and Germans called Danheuser, and the Greeks Thananses, and whom they worshipped as a god. […] [vc_separator type=’transparent’ position=’center’ color=” thickness=” up=” down=”]
Wolfram von Eschenbach… and a few like him… have transformed the ancient Germanic lords and princes, changed their adventures and histories into love stories and they would have believe in their poems that so much blood flowed, so many trials endured, and that is was not on account of war, as women do not much like to hear of this, as of love… So this is equally was happens to Danheuser, he who was a great hero and warrior… He was worshipped by the Greeks, to whom had been conferred the keys of Heaven and who helped men in difficulty when called upon”. To this account, a second, third and fourth may be added. The second, dating from 1580, claims that Tannhäuser was less in the service of Venus than that of Mars, and that to the Pope, “he confessed his childish warlike follies”, and not his sojourn in the mountain of Venus. — The third, a little older than the previous one — sees in Tannhäuser a “direct successor of the twelve masters who established Minnesäng”. — The fourth is a fifteenth century  song, entitled The twelve masters of the rose garden. The Tannhäuser of Aventinus, who reaches the ‘rose garden’ is a king, who later becomes a god. His divination is confirmed by the fact that he enters forever into the ‘rose garden’ and that the keys of Heaven are conferred to his charge. — The god of the garden cannot be that of the Bible and the keys of Heaven — read: of the ‘rose garden’ — can only be understood in the sense of this ‘master key’ which today in Lower Saxony is not known as the ‘Thieves’ key’ or ‘Dietrich’, but as Peterken, ‘little Peter’!
In the fifteenth century, Halberstadt’s Saxon chronicle tells of how Lohengrin came from the mountain where Lady Venus was to the Grail. In other words, according to a chronicle of the same epoch, to say that a king capable of making men blessed until the end of time had existed was a lie. The Grail was this Paradise, but it became a place of sin. The holy mountain of the Grail had been debased and had been made the infernal mountain of Venus. That what the Teutons of the pagan epoch worshipped, under the name of Asgard, as the domain of the gods, and under the name of Hel, as being the divine kingdom of death, was sung about, by the heretics and troubadours of the Middle Ages, under the names of ‘Grail Mountain’, ‘Rose Garden’, ‘Arthur’s Round Table’, ‘Mountain of Venus’ or this ‘Mount Bel’ in flames, into which Dietrich of Bern penetrated. And being deemed “the highest recompense of terrestrial aspirations”, they were in Wolfram von Eschenbach’s parlance, always the goals of quests. But that is not all: what the Greeks of pagan times perceived as the island of Æa, towards which the Argonauts and Heracles sailed, was none other than the Hellenic reflection of Nordic Asgard, and, as a result, a representation of mediaeval Grail Paradise, the Arthurian round table, the rose garden and the Mountain of Venus. And their common original basis was this “Mountain of Assembly in the most distant Midnight” as Isaiah calls it. At the end of the Middle Ages, when hanging someone, in Germany, it was always seen to that his face was turned towards the North. Towards Hell …  a paradox. Nothing is ever what it seems  …

So uh, how we feeling about vampiric player options? As usual I'm working on like ten different projects at the same time, one of those is going back and revamping Wolfram's Chronicle of Blood. Also as a side note I really enjoy the new lineage/ancestry rules they've been introducing in the past few books and that's what I'll be using in future projects!

Hello all! This is I believe my largest project to date, containing 53 pages worth of character options, spells, backgrounds, monsters, lore, and more! This book stars Zaros von Wolfram, a powerful vampire lord, and Alabast Etreimon, a skilled monster hunter. I had fun making this, so I hope y'all enjoy using it!

Well I have a plan of what's to come for upcoming projects! Gotta get through the stuff necessary to finish Wolfram's and the Codex. Still need to get Vyadere's set up.
Last project on the burner for the moment is the Traveler's Guide to Goldstruk! I saw y'all enjoyed the Hexslinger so much and figured why not make a dnd wild west book! Goldstruk will be the name of the setting that will be present in the book!

The way I make homebrew is I just really fixate on a certain aesthetic and then make stuff based around that.
Really into the aesthetic of the wild west and cowboys? Hexslinger.
Really into the aesthetic of norse mythology? Runekeeper.
Really into the aesthetic of elementals? Circle of Cultivation.
Really into gothic horror? Wolfram's Chronicle of Blood.
Everything I make can be traced back to a few week period where I am obsessed with and only consume things that match whatever aesthetic thing I like.
