Salem's Uber-Inglenook
A month or so ago, I was very fortunate to be able to tour Salem’s former Superior Court, a grand Victorian castle, complete with turret, built in 1861 and expanded in the 1880s. It’s been mothballed for quite some time, and is now part of big development/redevelopment project, in which it and its adjoining Greek Revival courthouse will be restored and a new multi-story residential building built…

Do you know much about poisons? My MC is an assassin who while posing as a servant and I was thinking that a unique way to slowly kill his target would be to douse the target's clothing and sheets with a slow acting poison that causes illness like symptom forcing the victim to remain in bed for long periods of time. I know we used to have arsenic clothing but arsenic poisoning is a bit obvious so is there some other kind of poison that could work? This is set in medieval times if that helps.
OK well- I’m not an expert on poisons by any means.
My degree was in Chemistry and I’ve got strong interests in history and botany so I’m aware of a fair few poisons. I think I’ll have to keep this short and I’d advise looking for further sources because this isn’t…. really my expertise.
And I held off answering this for a long time because- I do think it’s a genuine writing question. But I also know this information could be used to cause harm. And unlike the torture methods I talk about detailed descriptions of poisons aren’t particularly readily available.
I worry that this could be used to significant cause harm.
So- this is short. I’m sorry about that because I know you’ve waited a long time. I hope you understand that it’s as much as I feel comfortable publishing.
I’d disagree that arsenic poisoning is ‘obvious’ especially in a historic setting. An autopsy, even at that time, might detect arsenic. But the symptoms of poisoning and the way it kills can be mistaken for a host of other conditions. It looks almost exactly like severe food poisoning. In historical times that could be lethal*.
Gastrointestinal problems probably killed Alfred the Great of Wessex (the going theory is that he developed Crohn’s disease). These diseases effected every level of society and killed at every level of society.
Compounds from other heavy metals such as lead and mercury were also well known and traded. Many are lethal and they bioaccumulate. Newton painted his room with one.
But more generally? If you want something that seems unusual I’d suggest brushing up on botany.
Whatever climate and country you’re planning to set your story in there will be common poisonous plants and fungi. In England some of these plants were cultivated for non-culinary purposes. Some of them are also really easy to mistake for common edible plants.
A good foragers guide for the country you’re planning to set the story would be a good place to start looking. So are guides to wild native flora, for instance woodland planting guides or lists of native plants for shady areas.
I’d suggest looking up physic gardens from the place and period. Alnwick Castle has an excellent poison garden though many of the plants are from the New World and some wouldn’t survive the climate without modern horticultural methods.
As a final general note, everything leaves traces. If you’re looking for a real, historical, untraceable poison it probably doesn’t exist. Look instead for something people at the time could have mistaken for a common illness.
I hope that helps. :)
*My favourite arsenic based murder mystery is Sayers’ Strong Poison, which show cases just how often poisoning could be taken for natural sickness.

CheckOutAfrica Highlights: Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu Presents Award-Nominated Theatre Piece ‘Sweet Like Chocolate Boy’
Written and directed by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu, and produced by Play Back Drama, the 2-time Off West End Theatre Award (The Offies) nominated ‘Sweet Like Chocolate Boy’ is the latest must-see theatre piece.
Described by critics as “nothing short of a modern masterpiece”, “a captivating storyline with brilliantly realised, often hilarious, interpretations”, and “a remarkable animated and innovative play, ” the piece is named after Tristan’s favourite song, and one of the biggest UK Garage records of the ‘90s, ‘Sweet Like Chocolate Boy.’ First created as Tristan’s final year piece at Roehampton University, before being further developed via scratches at The Kiln, Rich Mix, and Cockpit, before its 5-star rated run at the Jack Studio Theatre, we recently caught up with Tristan to find out more about the man behind the piece. See what went down below:
So let’s start on the title “Sweet like chocolate boy”. What is it about the title of a 90’s record you like so much? Honestly, it reminds me of the times when I was 6 and the excitement of going to new estates because I honestly thought they were like castles. So that’s the nostalgic reason. But being almost 25 now, it is listening to the lyrics feeling they spoke to me as a black person in a multitude of ways. 1. We are saucy. 2 My blackness is both unique, ever-changing and beautiful 3. This is how the oppressive powers-that-be view us. We are a delicacy to them. They don’t hate us, they want to devour us. You grew up in the ’90s, what is it about your upbringing and surroundings that inspired you to write “sweet like chocolate boy” I feel that I am now coming into truly appreciating the multitude of black British culture that has grown around me. Music, Food, Fashion, Language. I want to make sure that – in my lifetime – I wrote a piece that was dedicated to that. I also feel the 90s is a decade widely enjoyed but seldom explored so wanted to delve into that more. Lastly, I wanted to the people of the estate – which includes neeky little Cartoon-Network mad me – a voice that was infused with all the joy we experience as well as our troubles. We are multi-layered, intercultural treasures that are to be cherished (but not devoured or diluted).
You studied at Roehampton University where you first wrote the script for your final piece. What is it that led you to take a degree in English and drama? And what would you say to the people considering what they are going to do at university?
I studied English & Drama because I made a decision to further my knowledge in both areas as much as possible. I knew that was where my future career lay. Playwriting wise, I wanted to ensure I understood the mechanics of words from the supposed greats and how to make them bang as a Director. To all who consider, I was very sure of what I wanted to do BUT IT IS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT. As far as I am concerned University is best for those who can already identify themselves as intrapersonal and audio learners PLUS already have a desire to speak on a critical, academically articulate, intellectual level. And with all those words, that does not make you better than anyone else – cos there is an argument that you can just go to talks & the library more often. Unless your a doctor, lawyer or teacher (even then) do not go to university to solely secure yourself your dream job. Go there for the access to be more widely read and delve into semantics of your craft OF YOUR OWN FREE WILL. The debt is not a joke and mental health pressures of keeping up with joneses can be a lot. How do you feel the show has been received so far? Did you have any expectations and have you met them so far? The show has been very well received. Many laugh, holler and cry. Some see it and need a few days to digest and enter into new conversations with it – which I love too. My biggest thing was making sure it reaches as many people as possible and start as many convos as possible about culture, revolution and what is the right act in this politically charged times we have (and still do) live in. I know my play does that. What message do you hope to convey and what can the audience expect? When you see this play, get ready to say ” I remember that tune!” Get ready to 2-step in your seat whilst watching poetic, physical storytelling coming at ya at blistering speeds. The message I want to convey is: Look at the multiplicity of us. We are the seasoning & the sauce. And we have had it, hard man. But let’s not forget what we created. And when we remember, lets treasure and start conversations how we keep ourselves sane whilst trying to rebuke centring our lives on eurocentric oppression in the meantime.
Who would you say has been your biggest inspiration through your journey and why? Well, I ain’t leaving here without saying Nyame (God), My Mum and my Dad for constantly telling me I have the ability to reach higher. Specifically, on an artistic level, I would say is fellow Ghanaian Michaela Coel. Her journey writing the incredible play Chewing Gum Dreams – based on her archiving the transformative power of her schoolyard days – as unapologetic bold and tender. Furthermore, she took that everywhere to the point it became a TV series. Her work crosses form & place. I need to do that too. And finally, what can we expect next from you? I’m still writing, got a couple of new plays cooking. In terms of directing, I recently won this year’s JMK award and will be directing the G.O.A.T – Arinzé Kene’s – seminal piece Little Baby Jesus at the Orange Tree Theatre. And tickets for that are out now!
Check out Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu’s Award-nominated “Sweet Like Chocolate Boy” piece as it hits Theatre Peckham, London this Saturday. Pick up your tickets here.

Disney released a new ‘Winnie the Pooh’ animation to celebrate the royal baby, and it includes cartoon versions of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Defence Online
Disney is celebrating the start of the royal little one by means of a new “Winnie the Pooh” animation.
On Thursday, Disney produced a new, 25-second-lengthy clip of the character carrying a blue book as a result of the Hundred Acre Woods. Winnie the Pooh inevitably comes at Windsor Castle, wherever he reads the reserve to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, along with cartoon versions of the child’s mothers and fathers, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
The animation was drawn by Kim Raymond, a Senior Principal Artist at Disney, in the typical style of the 1926 A.A. Milne book, “Winnie-the-Pooh.” The unique novel was illustrated by artist E. H. Shepard.
To rejoice the start of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, @Disney have developed a special Winnie-the-Pooh animation as a reward for Harry and Meghan. The quick was hand-painted in watercolour by Disney’s senior principal artist Kim Raymond. Truly distinctive???? pic.twitter.com/PrY5wlMeBQ
— Omid Scobie (@scobie) May perhaps 9, 2019
On Fb, Disney said the animation is the “beginning of a grand adventure.”
“Congratulations from Disney to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and The Royal Loved ones on the arrival of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor!” Disney wrote on its Fb page.
Browse much more: Prince Harry wore a jacket with ‘daddy’ printed on it to a royal engagement, showing he is already a happy father
This isn’t the first time Winnie the Pooh has achieved a member of the royal family members. In May perhaps 2016, Disney uploaded a 17-minute video clip in which the cartoon character satisfies Queen Elizabeth on her 90th birthday.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their initial baby, a little one boy named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, on Monday.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex then launched their son to the earth all through a image call at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.
“It’s magic, it’s been really awesome,” Markle mentioned for the duration of the photograph session on Wednesday. “I have the two very best guys in the earth, so I’m fairly pleased.”

Cleopatra in Space and the Missing "Quarantine" Episode [Part 1]
On July 15, 2020, the streaming service, Peacock, made 12 episodes of Cleopatra in Space, an animated show, available to all U.S. residents, after making five episodes available to Xfinity subscribers a few months before. Whether by error, laziness, or purposeful action, the show's sixth episode was not listed, meaning that only episodes 1-5 and 7-13 were available to anyone who subscribed to Peacock Premium. Mike Maihack, creator of the graphic novel series which this animated series was based on, lamented this development. He described the "missing" episode as focusing on a "zombie-like flu," with Cleo having to face the consequences of avoiding quarantine, and said it is an episode that the "entire world should be able to see right now." He also called the release of only 12 episodes "disappointing," referring to the fact that 26 episodes were part of the show's first season, many of which premiered on the Dreamworks channel, available to subscribers in Southeast Asia. A fan of the show later asked Peacock about this episode and they described it as "temporarily unavailable" and said that there is no news on the release "at the moment." As of the time of this article's publication, the episode has still not been added to Peacock, with an official Peacock account explaining that the episode was "not actively" on the platform, but not explaining why this was the case. This article will summarize the "missing" episode, reportedly with the name "Quarantine," as listed on the website of Rotten Tomatoes, [1] and note how it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was originally written in October 2020, but never published for some reason. It was since named and fixed up in December 2022, so some of the information in it may be outdated. It will be published on my History Hermann WordPress blog on Feb. 23, 2022. The episode was finally released on Peacock on June 25, 2021.
This episode is not the first time that a show has focused on a quarantine. The Simpsons Movie in 2007 was about the town of Springfield trapped under a glass dome by a power-hungry EPA administrator. Some have argued noted other Simpsons episodes, like one where the "Osaka Flu" spread across Springfield, although such a comparison is faulty due to the unscientific way that the flu spread across the town itself. On the other hand, the August 2011 episode of Futurama, "Cold Warriors," had the arrogant space commander, Zapp Brannigan, attempt to bring the quarantined city of New New York into the Sun after the common cold virus accidentally spread across the city from Fry to the rest of those in the city. Luckily, the cold is controlled once everyone receives a vaccine, the quarantine is lifted, and the city returned to its rightful location. In a similar vein, Edgar Allan Poe, in his short story "The Masque of the Red Death," focuses on a prince who gathers his rich friends within a castle while a plague known as the "Red Death" spreads across the country, killing all who are exposed. Ultimately, they are exposed to the virus and end up dying as a result, showing no one is safe from the disease.
Cleo and the zombie flu
This episode is different from the previously mentioned examples. Cleopatra "Cleo," (voiced by Lilimar Herandez) is adjusting herself to the future, almost getting killed by a robot assassin, a robotic monster, nearly captured by scavengers, and liberating a planet from the control of the Xerxs, the footsoldiers of the tyrannical Octavian, in previous episodes. She begins the episode by going on her first solo mission to retrieve a book from a planet named Buflong whose inhabitants look like butterflies and "speak a musical language," boasting she can deal with a "bunch of butterflies." She figures out how to deal with the burping butterflies, first zapping them with her quaser (a type of laser pistol), throwing her bracelets to the creatures, and speaking a burp language with the queen butterfly creature.
Cleo returns to Mayet confidently and when her mentor, Khensu (voiced by Sendhil Ramamurthy), tells her to quarantine because of a flu outbreak on the planet she came from. In her typical style, she decides to not take him seriously, declaring she has no idea what quarantine is, and says she is fine because she "doesn't even have a sniffle." She touches as many people as she can when she arrives at Pyramid, an academy which is a cross-between a college and high school, with no social distancing whatsoever. Although she thinks that everything will be "totally fine," the next day she sees all the students at the campus sick with the zombie flu. She does not understand how she got everyone sick, with Khensu informing her she is a carrier of the flu. She is shocked by how the sickness is developing among her classmates, such as temporary tentacle growth (in the case of Zaid), hallucinations (in the case of Brian), and projectile crying (in the case of Akila). Khensu tells her that the flu "affects every species differently" in the first stage of the virus. Although cats only have a mild cold, the second stage is the same for everyone: "extreme aggression." Basically, everyone turns into "rage zombies" who are prone to fight others. Yikes!
Cleo defends her actions, saying that she doesn't know "weird future stuff" and shows she has no knowledge of quarantine, guessing it is a mineral, a dance, or "some kind of pastry."
Khensu and Cleo leave in the nick of time, as they have to find a cure before everyone in the academy dies from the flu, killing each other in their uncontrollable rage. They travel to an uninhabited ice planet to meet Dr. Queed (voiced by Paul Rugg), former head of biosciences for P.Y.R.A.M.I.D., who was forced out because of his eccentric nature. While Khensu and Cleo are sparring, their ship crash-lands on the planet, and they barely escape being killed by lightning which strikes anything above 20 feet. Thanks to Cleo's quick thinking, charging her quaser with the lightning's energy, as soon as the virus fully takes hold of Khensu, making him a "rage zombie," the giant ice spider, which blocks their way, is killed by a blast from the quaser. Afterward, Cleo and Khensu enter Dr. Queed's lab, and learn the unsettling news that the monster Cleo killed was one of his creations! As Cleo pleads with him to help those at the academy, he remains skeptical of offering his "uncanny scientific brilliance." Using his over-confidence, hubris, and ego against him, Cleo manipulates Queed into helping them, as Queed claims he can cure "any sickness." Khensu, overtaken by the flu, almost kills Queed, until he sticks the untested vaccine into his arm, which ends up being successful. Later, Cleo goads Queed, saying he can't cure everyone, leading him to declare he will prove his scientific abilities by making a big batch of vaccines.
On their return to Mayet, Queed, Cleo, and Khensu wear special helmets equipped to shoot vaccine darts at people. When they return to the academy, it has turned into utter mayhem, with each of them spreading out to cover more ground, firing darts filled with the vaccine at every student they can find. In the end, Brian is the only holdout, remaining infected because the darts can't penetrate his cyborg body. Cleo has to activate her super pink power and is trapped by Brian, allowing her to suck out the power from Brian's body. With everything returning to normal, Cleo says the spread of the illness is all her fault, a conclusion which is mostly correct. Khensu admits that he shouldn't have assumed she knew of the "importance of quarantine." Ironically, she later enters quarantine after showing symptoms of a presumed common cold. In the last scene of the episode, she remarks, "quarantine stinks!" a sentiment a lot of us would agree with at this point in time, and asks for a charger.
Cleo declares that "quarantine stinks!"
