#World of Warcraft Future Races

Text
So, I've been playing MoP Remix (a limited time WoW variant), and had already speed leveled one character when I heard that the Dracthyr race would be getting class options other than Evoker in the future. Figured I'd take the speed level opportunity to lock in a BEWD themed Mage. (She's currently a Void Elf atm)

For reference if you're a non Warcraft fan or haven't been keeping up with WoW, Warcraft has blatantly racially coded fantasy races like the trolls have jamaican accents, wear tiki masks and grass skirts, and practice voodoo in Jungles, whilst the tauren (Minotaurs) have feather headdress, smoke peace pipes, have totem poles and tepees, ETC.
Warcraft's so called new "woke" writers have doubled down on the "PoC coded monsters are evil" stuff with the very few good characters from those races being depicted as the "good ones" because they reject the savage ways of their people and side with white humans.
They've also whitewashed any bad actions from white characters.
Around the same time, Mathias Shaw was confirmed as gay, we got 2021's Shadowlands where:
There was a story with the pure and good white colonizers vs the completely evil savage natives that deserved to be wiped out because they didn't want to share.
Confirmation that the gods that the white races worshipped were real, whilst the gods of the tauren and other PoC coded races were fake.
An afterlife where all spirits are converted to bodies resembling caucasian humans.
A POC coded character (Zul'jin) that fought against the white colonizers that stole his land and treat his people as vermin to be exterminated, being one of the only characters being sent to Hell, whilst white characters whom did far worse weren't.
Real world revered voodoo loa Dambala being depicted as a God of evil that players are sent to kill.
So I think more people should've voted negatively on Mathias Shaw because whilst the character himself isn't racist, he's closely associated with horrible racist writing that thought throwing a white gay character in to their broke ass script script would somehow make it "woke".
I encourage people to interpret the poll options in whatever way they want, whether that's the character's writing, the strength of the representation, or their overall feelings on the media. I've talked about this before, but at the end of the day I am not trying to be an arbiter of what media is good and what's not, because I am simply not qualified to be. I sincerely appreciate when people send in asks like this detailing the issues with a piece of media so that other people can be more aware in the future. All posts like this are tagged with "media critical"!

Bully Heacanons: Fave Videogames?!
SORRY ITS BEEN A WHILE YALL! I had my uni audition the other day, and a gig, ive been super busy!! I was doing some thinking, and as I thunked, I though about what videogames the characters would play if they could play ones from today; Gary? I feel like he'd play anything with intense combat, or anything combat focused. So, dark souls, elden ring, call of duty etc. He likes guns, he likes fighting. He'd play everything on hardcore difficulties, get mad when he keeps dying, and switch to easy so that he can feel super overpowered. He'd also love the sims, the little freak, and would make the other bullworth students and kill them in various ways. He'd like playing god, too, so any god sims. Gary would be the most toxic of console players, in the voice chats he'd be a god at destroying people. He has had so many accounts banned for harassment. Pete? I get the feeling he'd like racing games. Apparently he has the top score on the future racer arcade game. I think he'd also like rhythm games, guitar hero, maybe even osu. I think he'd be pretty versatile too, playing anything with a story from Hades to Skyrim to Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. I can definitely see him as a PC gamer but also with handheld consoles like the switch. he's not really an online player, but wouldnt mind MMORPGs like world of warcraft. Jimmy would love games with destruction, and giant mechs and robots and big enemies, explosions and blood. Typical boy stuff. So I think he might like the armoured core games. I can also seeing him having a DS, and those really shitty games called like "Tanks Vs Giant Bugs" or "Giant Dinosaur Robot Killing Time" (speaking from experience here). I don't think he'd have had the money growing up for anything crazy, but he'd be lucky enough to stumble across and get a console, like a ps4 just before they brought out the ps5 (also speaking from experience here). I think he'd love the survival aspect of minecraft and might enjoy casually playing some battle royale games.

Orctober 2023, twenty-five - "Orchestrate" (Bard Bonus)
Once again on the prompt list – “Hope.”
I was planning on holding off on posting this until the last day of the month, for extra oomph factor, but it fit so well with this prompt specifically that I couldn’t not.
~
Hope is the progression of Orcish representation.
Hope is people having seen Orcs in the original, book canon of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings,” and being inspired to carry them forward, in any capacity, into other media. Dungeons & Dragons. Warhammer. Warcraft. Hope is individuals seeing Orcs across those many stories and settings, more and more, and being inspired one by one to do something different. Do something kinder.
Hope is Wizards of the Coast finally admitting that casting Orcs as a wholly evil-aligned race was wrong, and choosing to do differently, moving forward.
Hope is Peter Jackson having given us Orcs with personality, even amidst other problematic choices, leading to what was done with them in the “Rings of Power.”
Hope is all the Arda-centered Orc fanfic out there, filling in the gaps.
Hope is focus on them as people in monster-fantasy romance like the Orc Sworn series.
Hope is everyone in my Orcstagram group rallying to celebrate them for a whole month every year.
Hope is every moment that someone talks about them as MORE than cardboard cutout fantasy monsters across any social media, or in person, with people who usually don’t think about such things.
Hope is the choices I make, in my own work with them, and the knowledge that even now, other people are pushing even harder, and that others will push even further than anything happening right now, in the future.
Hope is what change this will all inspire, person to person, in the treatment of those that are deemed “different” or “other” and therefore “dangerous,” on Earth.
~
As before (when shown in linework), this piece featuring Onna Kin-breaker from my work “Tock the Gnome,” and Lurtz of Isengard, from Peter Jackson’s take on “Fellowship of the Ring.” With spruce in Onna’s hand, for “hope in adversity.” …..And Butterfly Hero Stephen.
Also, as the title above implies, this is the Bard level bonus for my patrons at that level, for September!! All Bard patrons within domestic shipping distance will be getting this as a print in the mail soon (high res. file to anyone international, for self-printing) – as will any NEW patrons at that level, now through November 15th. Signup details here. (And same case for yesterday’s piece, too.)
(Aaaand as you might have figured, “Tock the Gnome” World Building Wednesday will be up on Friday this week, instead, to hold space for this ✨💚✨ )
~
Bonus art and stories ~ Prints, comics and more!

Welcome to Knightshade Academy! There are several names under consideration for the rest of the title, such as Knightshade Academy for the Magically Gifted, Knightshade Academy of Magic and Might, Knightshade Academy of Magick, and Knightshade Academy of the Supernaturally gifted.
Tumblr media
Knightshade Academy has gone through many reiterations over the past couple weeks since coming up with the idea. I didn't want to make an exact copy of Hogwarts, and wanted to make it unique. My aesthetic inspiration is a mix of World of Warcraft, Harry Potter, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dungeons and Dragons, Tim Burton imagery, and the macabre of The Addams Family. While the castle was always raised high, I've also had the idea of making it a kingdom floating in mid-air, well out of reach of human intrusion. There's also the idea that due to threats, the school raises up in the first book.
Tumblr media
I want a huge sense of adventure in my stories. I'm a huge fan of RPGs, both video games and table top. I love the colorful whimsy and glowing darkness of Japanese and certain western RPGs. Instead of having a purely wizarding school, I wanted to make a school that trains all races in magic and might, including clubs like the Adventurer Guild that would prepare students to do their part to rid darkness from the world. As far as curriculum, I wanted to include physical classes such as combat and survivalism, as well as both general and specialized magical classes such as blood magic, elemental magic, nature magic, etc. This will lend itself to creating the world's best mages, adventurers, rulers, government officials, soldiers, artisans, and young professionals.
Tumblr media
The first detail that I'm really ironing out is how to access the world that houses Knightshade Academy. I've taken some inspiration from one of my favorite game series, Ni No Kuni. The idea is that along with the normal human world, there is another parallel world where the supernatural creatures exist, and there are portals/magic gates located in the vicinity of each of the 7 wonders of the world. Once upon a time, both world existed in harmony, and you could move freely between both, but in the first book, an uprising of a dark race threatens both worlds creates tension between them that makes it very dangerous and almost impossible.
Tumblr media
Our main character's name is Atticus Slade. While I'm still working out his backstory and how he fits into the world, but I know that his personality will be deadpan and sarcastic. Though he has a strong sense of loyalty and empathy for his friends, others sometimes find him to be intimidating because of his sharp looks, his venomous wit, and his sassy sarcasm. As far as his history, I think I'd like him to originally be from the human world, his mother a human and his father a mage (or some other race, depending on what I decide in the future). There will definitely be a friend group, but those characters haven't been decided.
Tumblr media
There are many titles in the works, each with different kinds of stories. The First is The Midnight Masquerade, dealing with a cult of vampires unhappy with the merging of humans and supernatural beings in their world, and plan an uprising. The specifics haven't been totally worked out yet, but that's in progress. There are many titles being tested, so if you have any opinions or want to give your favorites, feel free!

MMO's I've played based on if you can Be A Cat or not:
World of Warcraft - 2/10, you can play a druid in order to Be Cat, but this is a strict race/class limitation and requires you to play in a specific way. There is also at least one cosmetic toy that turns you into an antho cat for a little, but this is NOT permanent, has a cooldown longer than the duration, and has no customization options. Disappointing access to Being A Cat.
Final Fantasy XIV - 9/10, not only can you be a typical catboy/catgirl, you can also be a big buff anthro cat man if you want. I have to dock a point for Hrothgar not having a female player character option, but supposedly this will be added sometime in the future.
Guild Wars 2 - 11/10, not only are the Charr cats, but cats that answer the age-old question: "what if our cat people also filled the story role of fantasy orcs, and we made them run on all fours for their running animation, and we also gave them horns?". Perfection, absolutely no notes.
The Elder Scrolls Online - 10/10, you can be a Khajiit, just like the single player titles. ESO gets bonus points for having the other Khajiit castes in the game, which is more than the main titles can say. Unfortunately they are NPCs ONLY and not playable :( but full points for the Be A Cat option that Khajijt represent, including the full Elsweyr expansion.

(Shadowlands spoilers below)
The saddest part to me about Anduin not wanting to come back to Azeroth and wandering the Maw, is that he is doing it because he feels guilty of his actions when it was not his fault. He hates what he became and can't face himself. And the issue is, if he feels this guilty about how he behaved while under someone else's control - imagine how upset and torn inside he will be when he realizes, in the future, that by not coming back to his throne there are also negative consequences. And I'm just going to call it right now, because we all know that now he is not he returning, shit is going to go down in the alliance under the new ruler. No one is as passive as Anduin is with wanting to see things equally and being hesitant to kill when it isn't warranted, and we all should know by now that war and genocide is going to be construed one way or the other. If you look at it from any of the remaining alliance leader's point of view, each one of them has an issue with some race and I wouldn't put it past any of them to take advantage of a situation and go too far even in a time of peace. Plus you know it's world of warcraft, the war always starts again somehow. So um, that kinda sucks. Because whatever drama we about to face and that the alliance is way overdue for starting, you just know that when Anduin finds out, he gonna blame himself internally for that too. And by that time, it will actually be validated. All actions have consequences, and by thinking of himself and running off to leave the throne to others, Anduin doesn't realize he is taking a key peaceful figure away from a party of leaders that may otherwise go south. So yeah. I hear two sides of stories so far: people who hate Anduin's decision because it seems like a quitters way out, and then also people who are just glad that Anduin is going bc he was too peaceful in the throne. I'm sure that's exactly why Blizzard made him run off, (poor writing aside and how they portrayed that), because we all know that unless every leader in the alliance disrespects or overpowers Anduin, while he is on the throne there is always that voice of reason, and if we want the Alliance to do something horrible to match the Hordes former actions, it'll go way further if he is removed from the picture all together. But damn, I'm just so sad already thinking how he will blame himself for that too- leaving and then letting everything go downhill because he wasn't there to speak up. But maybe at least then if he does decide to return in the far future in the aftermath, he will have some sense of his role in things and confidence, that he is unique in the way that he is there for a purpose as the voice of reason.

Bread's Top 5 Of 2022 Honorable Mention: World of Warcraft Dragonflight
Tumblr media
Much has been written about WoW Dragonflight, some of it even by me, but it should be stressed that whatever praise is being leveled at this new WoW expansion, it isn't effusive enough. WoW had, putting it lightly, a bad two years spent in Shadowlands. Shadowlands itself put on a strong beginning with interesting settings, fun classic returning characters and a cool path laid out in front of it. It didn't follow that path though, arguably it didn't follow any path. A combination of studio turmoil and the Covid-19 Pandemic obviously derailed whatever plans Shadowlands had in the cards, and went spent almost two years repeating samey content, and dealing with the most boring bad guy Warcraft as a franchise had ever cooked up. Thank the titans that none of that applies to Dragonflight thus far. While I did just mention above that Shadowlands had a strong opening, it pales in comparison to Dragonflight's, and differs in key ways. Where Shadowlands was laser focused on introducing you to tons of new words, concepts and characters, Dragonflight scales all of this way back and remembers why people like this franchise. Instead of all new races and characters for us to meet, Dragonflight pulls deep from Azeroths already existing bench and creates fun groups of characters and scenarios by utilizing the things that are long already established. Any day of the week, I'd rather explore some old ruins with a comedy Blood Elf/Human duo, than sit and listen to yet another Kyrian explain to me why it's bad we don't have any anima. Story's are simpler, more fun, and feature dozens of memorable new characters, not just two or three to latch onto and meme. Dragonflight's setting also goes a long way to assuaging long terms fears for me. Shadowlands had....an idea, when it came to the four zones being wholly separate from each other by a system of portals, but it paled in comparison to one solidly made landmass. Dragonflight has this sort of extremely fun clockwork design of zones, with each one getting higher and higher in elevation until eventually you reach Thaldrazus and Valdrakken, firmly sitting at the top of everything up in mountains. From there you can see every other part of the island. The sunken river valleys of the Waking Shore, the long flat plans of Onharen. And my personal favorite, the heavily Northrend inspired redwood forest of Azure Span. Getting around these zones is of course made incredibly fun, and interestingly vertical, by the big new addition of Dragon Riding. Any fear people may have had that it would just be a gimmick led new way of moving around the world should be assuaged by this point. Dragonriding adds new movement tech that leaves the original flying mounts feeling boring and rote. You no longer just pick a direction and click on autorun. You'll need to think things through, momentum, getting enough height, building speed. All the new zones are ridiculously large in comparison to prior expansions, and you'll quickly realize it's because the game encourages you to gain massive bursts of speed on the back of your customizable dragon friends, going almost 600% faster than traditional flying mount speed ever reached.
All of this isn't even mentioning the smart, fun forward rethink of the Renown system. Focused now on fun items, cosmetics and new activities to unlock, not brutally incremental power upgrades. A fun new raid leading the opening chapter, full of elemental threads. Or even the incredible rework of Threads of Fate into the far simpler, more expansive, and less finnicky Adventure Mode, making leveling alts better than ever. There's a lot to look forward to in WoW's future right now, and I'm hoping for the best as we forge a new path into Dragonflight this year.

1) Mythology of the Titans | WoW In-Game
No one knows exactly how the universe began. Some theorize that a catastrophic cosmic explosion sent the infinite worlds spinning out into the vastness of the Great Dark - worlds that would one day bear life-forms of wondrous and terrible diversity. Others believe that the universe, as it exists, was created as a whole by a singular, all-powerful entity. Though the exact origins of the chaotic universe remain unclear, it is clear that a race of powerful beings arose to bring order to the various worlds and ensure a safe future for the beings that would follow in their footsteps. The Titans, colossal, metallic-skinned gods from the far reaches of the cosmos, came forward and set to work on the worlds they encountered. They shaped the form of their worlds by raising mighty mountains and dredging out vast seas. They breathed skies and raging atmospheres into being - all part of their unfathomable, far-sighted plan to create order out of chaos. They even empowered primitive races to tend to their works and maintain the integrity of their respective worlds. The Titans, ruled by an elite sect known as the Pantheon, brought order to a hundred million worlds scattered throughout the Great Dark Beyond during the first ages of creation. The benevolent Pantheon, seeking to safeguard their structured worlds, was ever vigilant against the threat of attack from the vile, extra-dimensional entities of the Twisting Nether. The Nether, an ethereal dimension of chaotic magics that connected the myriad worlds of the universe together, was home to an infinite number of malefic, demonic beings, who sought only to destroy life and devour the energies of the living universe.
2) Sargeras and the Betrayal | WoW In-Game
Although Sargeras' nearly limitless powers made short work of the shambling demons he found throughout the Great Dark, he was greatly troubled by the creatures' corruption and all-consuming evil. Incapable of fathoming such depravity, the great Titan began to slip into a brooding depression. Despite his growing unease, Sargeras rid the universe of demonic entities by trapping them within a corner of the Twisting Nether.
While his confusion and misery deepened, Sargeras was forced to contend with a particularly insidious group intent on disrupting the Titans' order: the Nathrezim. This dark race of vampiric demons (also known as dreadlords) conquered a number of populated worlds by possessing their inhabitants and turning them to the shadow.
The nefarious, scheming dreadlords turned whole nations against one another by manipulating them into unthinking hatred and mistrust. Sargeras defeated the Nathrezim easily, but their corruption affected him deeply.
As doubt and despair overwhelmed Sargeras' senses, he lost all faith not only in his mission, but also in the Titans' vision of an ordered universe. Eventually he came to believe that the concept of order itself was folly, and that chaos and depravity were the only absolutes within the dark, lonely universe.
His fellow Titans tried to persuade him of his error and calm his raging emotions, but he disregarded their more optimistic beliefs as self-serving delusions. Storming from their ranks forever, Sargeras set out to find his own place in the universe. Although the Pantheon was sorrowful at his departure, the Titans could never have predicted just how far their lost brother would go.
By the time Sargeras' madness had consumed the last vestiges of his valiant spirit, he believed that the Titans themselves were responsible for creation's failure. Deciding, at last, to undo their works throughout the universe, he resolved to form an unstoppable army that would set the physical universe aflame.
Even Sargeras' titanic form became distorted from the corruption that plagued his once-noble heart. His eyes, hair, and beard erupted in fire, and his metallic bronze skin split open to reveal an endless furnace of blistering hate.
In his fury, Sargeras shattered the prisons he'd created and set the loathsome demons free. These cunning creatures bowed before the dark Titan's vast rage and offered to serve him in whatever malicious ways they could. Seeking a way to lead and control his vast demonic army, Sargeras recruited (and subsequently corrupted) the ancient and intelligent race of the Eredar. From within their ranks, Sargeras picked two champions to command his demonic army of destruction.
Kil'jaeden the Deceiver was chosen to seek out the darkest races in the universe and recruit them into Sargeras' ranks. The second champion, Archimonde the Defiler,[sic] was chosen to lead Sargeras' vast armies into battle against any who might resist the Titan's will.
Kil'jaeden's first move was to enslave the vampiric dreadlords under his terrible power. The dreadlords served as his personal agents throughout the universe, and they took pleasure in locating primitive races for their master to corrupt and bring into the fold. First amongst the dreadlords was Tichondrius the Darkener. Tichondrius served Kil'jaeden as the perfect soldier and agreed to bring Sargeras' burning will to all the dark corners of the universe.
The mighty Archimonde also empowered agents of his own. Calling upon the malefic pit lords and their barbarous leader, Mannoroth the Destructor, Archimonde hoped to establish a fighting elite that would scour creation of all life.
Once Sargeras saw that his armies were amassed and ready to follow his every command, he launched his raging forces into the vastness of the Great Dark. He referred to his growing army as the Burning Legion. To this date, it is still unclear how many worlds they consumed and burned on their unholy Burning Crusade across the universe.

4) The Old Gods and the Ordering of Azeroth | WoW In-Game
Unaware of Sargeras' mission to undo their countless works, the Titans continued to move from world to world, shaping and ordering each planet as they saw fit. Along their journey they happened upon a small world that its inhabitants would later name Azeroth.
As the Titans made their way across the primordial landscape, they encountered a number of hostile elemental beings. These elementals, who worshipped a race of unfathomably evil beings known only as the Old Gods, vowed to drive the Titans back and keep their world inviolate from the invaders' metallic touch.
The Pantheon, disturbed by the Old Gods' penchant for evil, waged war upon the elementals and their dark masters. The Old Gods' armies were led by the most powerful elemental lieutenants: Ragnaros the Firelord, Therazane the Stonemother, Al'Akir the Windlord, and Neptulon the Tidehunter.
Their chaotic forces raged across the face of the world and clashed with the colossal Titans. Though the elementals were powerful beyond mortal comprehension, their combined forces could not stop the mighty Titans. One by one, the elemental lords fell, and their forces dispersed.
The Pantheon shattered the Old Gods' citadels and chained the five evil gods far beneath the surface of the world. Without the Old Gods' power to keep their raging spirits bound to the physical world, the elementals were banished to an abyssal plane, where they would contend with one another for all eternity. With the elementals' departure, nature calmed, and the world settled into a peaceful harmony. The Titans saw that the threat was contained and set to work.
The Titans empowered a number of races to help them fashion the world. To help them carve out the fathomless caverns beneath the earth, the Titans created the dwarf-like earthen from magical, living stone. To help them dredge out the seas and lift the land from the sea floor, the Titans created the immense but gentle sea giants. For many ages the Titans moved and shaped the earth, until at last there remained one perfect continent.
At the continent's center, the Titans crafted a lake of scintillating energies. The lake, which they named the Well of Eternity, was to be the fount of life for the world. Its potent energies would nurture the bones of the world and empower life to take root in the land's rich soil. Over time, plants, trees, monsters, and creatures of every kind began to thrive on the primordial continent.
As twilight fell on the final day of their labors, the Titans named the continent Kalimdor: "land of eternal starlight".

7) Charge of the Dragonflights | WoW In-Game
Satisfied that the small world had been ordered and that their work was done, the Titans prepared to leave Azeroth. However, before they departed, they charged the greatest species of the world with the task of watching over Kalimdor, lest any force should threaten its perfect tranquility. In that age, there were many dragonflights.
Yet there were five flights that held dominion over their brethren. It was these five flights that the Titans chose to shepherd the budding world. The greatest members of the Pantheon imbued a portion of their power upon each of the flights' leaders. These majestic dragons (as listed below) became known as the Great Aspects, or the Dragon Aspects.
Aman'Thul, the Highfather of the Pantheon, bestowed a portion of his cosmic power upon the massive bronze dragon, Nozdormu. The Highfather empowered Nozdormu to guard time itself and police the ever-spinning pathways of fate and destiny. The stoic, honorable Nozdormu became known as the Timeless One.
Eonar, the Titan patron of all life, gave a portion of her power to the red leviathan, Alexstrasza. Ever after, Alexstrasza would be known as the Life-Binder, and she would work to safeguard all living creatures within the world. Due to her supreme wisdom and limitless compassion for all living things, Alexstrasza was crowned the Dragonqueen and given dominion over her kind.
Eonar also blessed Alexstrasza's younger sister, the lithe green dragon Ysera, with a portion of nature's influence. Ysera fell into an eternal trance, bound to the waking Dream of Creation. Known as the Dreamer, she would watch over the growing wilds of the world from her verdant realm, the Emerald Dream.
Norgannon, the Titan lore keeper and master-magician, granted the blue dragon, Malygos, a portion of his vast power. From then on, Malygos would be known as the Spell-Weaver, the guardian of magic and hidden arcanum.
Khaz'goroth, the Titan shaper and forger of the world, bestowed some of his vast power upon the mighty black wyrm, Neltharion. The great-hearted Neltharion, known afterwards as the Earth-Warder, was given dominion over the earth and the deep places of the world. He embodied the strength of the world and served as Alexstrasza's greatest supporter.
Thus empowered, the Five Aspects were charged with the world's defense in the Titans' absence. With the dragons prepared to safeguard their creation, the Titans left Azeroth behind forever. Unfortunately it was only a matter of time before Sargeras learned of the newborn world's existence….

11) The Twin Empires | WoW In-Game
About 16,000 years ago (long before the night elves foolishly called down the wrath of the Burning Legion), trolls lorded over much of Kalimdor (then a single continent). There were twin troll empires -- the Gurubashi Empire of the southeastern jungles -- and the Amani Empire of the middle forestlands.
There were smaller tribes that lived far to the north (in the region now known as Northrend). These tribes founded a small nation known as Gundrak, but never achieved the size or prosperity of the southern empires.
The Gurubashi and Amani empires had little love for one another, but rarely warred against each other. At the time, their greatset common enemy was a third empire -- the civilization of Azj'Aqir. The aqir were intelligent insectoids who ruled the lands of the far west. These clever insectoids were greatly expansionistic and incredibly evil. The aqir were obsessed with eradicating all non-insect life from the fields of Kalimdor.
The trolls fought them for many thousands of years, but never succeeded in winning a true victory over the aqir. Eventually, due to the troll's[sic] persistence, the aqiri kingdom split in half as its citizens fled to separate colonies in the far northern and southern regions of the continent.
Two aqiri city-states emerged - Azjol-Nerub in the northern wastes, and Ahn'Qiraj in the southern desert. Though the trolls suspected that there were other aqiri colonies beneath Kalimdor, their existence was never verified.
With the insectoids driven into exile, the twin troll empires returned to business as usual. Despite their great victory, neither civilization expanded much further than their original boundaries. However, ancient texts speak of a small faction of trolls that broke off from the Amani Empire and founded their own colony in the heart of the dark continent.
There, these brave pioneers discovered the cosmic Well of Eternity which transformed them into beings of immense power. Some legends suggest that these adventurous trolls were the first night elves, though this theory has never been proven.

15) The Waking World and the Well of Eternity | WoW In-Game
Ten thousand years before the orcs and humans clashed in their First War, the world of Azeroth cradled only one massive continent surrounded by the infinite, raging seas. That land mass, known as Kalimdor, was home to a number of disparate races and creatures, all vying for survival amongst the savage elements of the waking world. At the dark continent's center was a mysterious lake of incandescent energies.
The lake, which would later be called the Well of Eternity, was the true heart of the world's magic and natural power. Drawing its energies from the infinite Great Dark beyond the world, the Well acted as a mystical fount, sending its potent energies out across the world to nourish life in all its wondrous forms.
In time, a primitive tribe of nocturnal humanoids cautiously made their way to the edges of the mesmerizing, enchanted lake.
The feral, nomadic humanoids, drawn by the Well's strange energies, built crude homes upon its tranquil shores. Over time, the Well's cosmic power affected the strange tribe, making them strong, wise and virtually immortal. The tribe adopted the name Kaldorei, which meant -children of the stars- in their native tongue. To celebrate their budding society, they constructed great structures and temples around the lake's periphery.
The Kaldorei, or night elves as they would later be known, worshipped the moon goddess, Elune, and believed that she slept within the Well's shimmering depths during the daylight hours. The early night elf priests and seers studied the Well with an insatiable curiosity, driven to plumb its untold secrets and power. As their society grew, the night elves explored the breadth of Kalimdor and encountered its myriad denizens.
The only creatures that gave them pause were the ancient and powerful dragons. Though the great serpentine beasts were often reclusive, they did much to safeguard the known lands from potential threats. The night elves believed that the dragons held themselves to be the protectors of the world, and that they and their secrets were best left alone.
In time, the night elves' curiosity led them to meet and befriend a number of powerful entities, not the least of which was Cenarius, a mighty demi-god of the primordial forestlands. The great-hearted Cenarius grew fond of the inquisitive night elves and spent a great deal of time teaching them about the natural world. The tranquil Kaldorei developed a strong empathy for the living forests of Kalimdor and reveled in the harmonious balance of nature.
Yet, as the seemingly endless ages passed, the night elves' civilization expanded both territorially and culturally. Their temples, roads, and dwelling places stretched across the breadth of the dark continent. Azshara, the night elves' beautiful and gifted Queen, built an immense, wondrous palace on the Well's shore that housed her favored servitors within its bejeweled halls.
Her servitors, whom she called the Quel'dorei or -high-borne,- doted on her every command and believed themselves to be greater than the rest of their lower-caste brethren. Though Queen Azshara was loved equally by all of her people, the high-borne were secretly hated by the jealous masses.
Sharing the priests' curiosity towards the Well of Eternity, Azshara ordered the educated high-borne to plumb its secrets and reveal its true purpose in the world.
The high-borne buried themselves in their work and studied the Well ceaselessly. In time they developed the ability to manipulate and control the Well's cosmic energies. As their reckless experiments progressed, the high-borne found that they could use their newfound powers to either create or destroy at their leisure. The hapless high-borne had stumbled upon primitive magic and were now resolved to devote themselves to its mastery.
Although they agreed that magic was inherently dangerous if handled irresponsibly, Azshara and her highborne began to practice their spellcraft with reckless abandon. Cenarius and many of the wizened night elf scholars warned that only calamity would result from toying with the clearly volatile arts of magic. But, Azshara and her followers stubbornly continued to expand their burgeoning powers.
As their powers grew, a distinct change came over Azshara and the high-borne. The haughty, aloof upper class became increasingly callous and cruel towards their fellow night elves. A dark, brooding pall veiled Azshara's once entrancing beauty. She began to withdraw from her loving subjects and refused to interact with any but her trusted high-borne priests.
A young, brazen scholar named Furion Stormrage, who had spent much of his time studying the Well's effects, began to suspect that a terrible power was corrupting the high-borne and his beloved Queen. Though he could not conceive the evil that was to come, he knew that the night elves' lives would soon be changed forever….

Tumblr media
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) have revolutionized the gaming industry, providing immersive virtual worlds. Players here can embark on epic adventures, forge new friendships, and engage in endless quests. These online multiplayer games have evolved from humble text-based beginnings to expansive graphical worlds, captivating millions of players worldwide. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating realm of MMORPGs. We explore their history, key features, social dynamics, economic systems, and the impact they have had on gaming culture. Whether you are a seasoned player or new to the world of MMORPGs, join us as we unravel the intricacies of this thriving genre and the future possibilities. 1. Introduction So, you've probably heard the term "MMORPG" thrown around in gaming circles, but what exactly does it mean? Well, MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. It's a mouthful, but don't worry, we'll break it down for you. An MMORPG is a type of video game that allows thousands of players to interact with each other in a virtual world. These games are all about immersing yourself in a character and embarking on exciting adventures alongside fellow players from around the globe. Think of it as a virtual playground. Here you can live out your wildest fantasies and forge lasting friendships (or rivalries). A Brief History of MMORPGs MMORPGs have come a long way since their humble beginnings. It all started in the early 1970s with text-based Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs). These games were played entirely through text commands. The players would use their imagination to visualize the world and its characters. Fast forward to the late 90s, and graphical MMORPGs began to emerge. Games like Ultima Online and EverQuest introduced stunning 3D visuals that brought the virtual worlds to life. This marked the beginning of a new era for MMORPGs, captivating millions of players worldwide. Nowadays, MMORPGs continue to evolve and push boundaries with advanced graphics, intricate storylines, and complex gameplay mechanics. They have become a staple in the gaming industry, providing endless hours of entertainment for gamers of all ages. 2. The Evolution of MMORPGs Imagine that you're sitting in front of a computer screen. You type commands like "go north" and "attack monster" to navigate a virtual world. These were the humble beginnings of MMORPGs with text-based MUDs. In the early days, MUDs relied purely on the power of imagination. The game's descriptions were all written in text, and players had to visualize the world in their minds. It may sound rudimentary compared to today's games, but these MUDs laid the foundation for the future of MMORPGs. The Rise of Graphical MMORPGs The late 90s brought a significant shift in the MMORPG landscape with the introduction of graphical MMORPGs. Games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft revolutionized the genre by providing immersive 3D worlds filled with eye-catching visuals. No longer bound by text-based descriptions, players could now explore vibrant landscapes. They interact with intricately designed characters and participate in epic battles. This leap in technology propelled MMORPGs into the mainstream and captured the hearts of millions of gamers worldwide. 3. Exploring the Key Features and Mechanics of MMORPGs One of the most exciting aspects of MMORPGs is the ability to create and customize your character. From choosing your race and class to selecting facial features and clothing, the options are endless. Whether you want to be a mighty warrior, a cunning rogue, or a wise mage, MMORPGs allow you to bring your unique vision to life. Quests and Storylines MMORPGs are known for their rich and immersive storylines. These games offer a vast array of quests, missions, and objectives for players to embark on. Whether you're battling fearsome creatures, solving mysteries, or helping NPCs (non-playable characters) with their problems, there's always a new adventure waiting around the corner. Combat Systems Engaging in combat is a core aspect of MMORPGs. These games feature various combat systems, from traditional tab-targeting to action-based combat. Whether you prefer strategizing and planning your attacks or unleashing swift and precise maneuvers, MMORPGs offer a combat style to suit your playstyle. Leveling and Progression In MMORPGs, progression is key. As you complete quests, defeat enemies, and explore the world, your character gains experience points (XP) that allow them to level up. Leveling up unlocks new abilities, equipment, and areas to explore, ensuring a sense of growth and accomplishment. 4. The Impact of MMORPGs on Gaming Culture and Communities MMORPGs have created vibrant virtual communities where players from all walks of life come together to form friendships and share experiences. These games have become more than just a form of entertainment; they have fostered the growth of social networks and provided a sense of belonging for many players. Economic Systems and Player Interactions In MMORPGs, players can engage in complex economic systems where they can trade, buy, and sell virtual goods and services. From crafting and selling powerful weapons to running virtual businesses, these games offer opportunities for players to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and interact with a thriving in-game economy. Player vs. Player (PvP) Dynamics For those seeking a competitive edge, MMORPGs often feature Player vs. Player (PvP) gameplay. Whether it's dueling other players in arenas, participating in large-scale faction wars, or conquering enemy territories, PvP adds an extra layer of excitement and challenge to the game. So, there you have it—a crash course on the enchanting world of MMORPGs. These games have captivated millions of players worldwide, providing endless adventures, unforgettable friendships, and incredible experiences. So grab your sword, don your magical robes, and embark on an epic journey in the world of MMORPGs! 5. The Role of Character Customization and Progression in MMORPGs One of the best parts of playing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is being able to create your own unique character. Say goodbye to generic, cookie-cutter heroes! In MMORPGs, you have the power to personalize your avatar from head to toe. Want purple hair, pointy ears, and a collection of tattoos? Go for it! From appearance to race and class, the options are endless, allowing you to bring your imagination to life. Advancement and Skill Development Once you've designed your one-of-a-kind hero, it's time to embark on exciting adventures and grow stronger. In MMORPGs, character progression is a key element. As you complete quests, defeat enemies, and explore the vast virtual world, you earn experience points that can be used to level up your character. Leveling up unlocks new abilities, talents, and skills, making you a force to be reckoned with. Whether you choose to be a mighty warrior or a cunning spellcaster, the path to becoming a legendary hero is in your hands. Gear and Equipment Upgrades In the world of MMORPGs, your character's gear is everything. Alongside your epic journey, you'll encounter powerful weapons, armor, and accessories that can enhance your abilities and protect you from the dangers that lie ahead. From enchanted swords to mystical staffs, there's a wealth of equipment to be discovered. But don't get too attached to your gear, as new and better items constantly become available. The pursuit of legendary loot is an ongoing quest, and finding that shiny new piece of equipment can be downright exhilarating. 6. Social Interaction and Cooperative Gameplay in MMORPGs Playing an MMORPG is not just about slaying dragons and amassing treasure; it's also about connecting with other players. Guilds, or player-created organizations, provide a sense of community, friendship, and support. Joining a guild allows you to team up with like-minded adventurers, share knowledge, and tackle challenges together. Whether you're a casual player looking for a social outlet or a hardcore raider seeking comrades-in-arms, guilds offer a fantastic opportunity to forge lasting bonds. Group Content and Raids In the world of MMORPGs, there's strength in numbers. Many quests and challenges are designed to test the abilities of a group of players working together. From dungeons filled with fearsome creatures to epic raids against towering bosses, cooperative gameplay is where MMORPGs shine. Strategizing, coordinating attacks, and supporting each other's strengths are the keys to success. Plus, the thrill of emerging victorious with your group after a hard-fought battle is simply unmatched. Player Trading and Collaboration Trading and collaborating with other players is a fundamental aspect of MMORPGs. Whether you're looking to exchange rare items, craft superior gear, or pool resources for a joint endeavor, engaging in player-to-player interactions is a valuable part of the experience. The in-game economy thrives on these transactions, creating a dynamic environment where players become merchants, craftsmen, and entrepreneurs. Building mutually beneficial relationships and negotiation skills can truly pay off in this virtual world. 7. Economics and Trading Systems within MMORPGs Move over real-world money, because virtual currencies rule the MMORPG realm. These games often have their own in-game currency that players earn, spend, and trade. Virtual economies within MMORPGs mirror those of the real world, with supply and demand affecting prices and value. From buying potions to investing in rare items, understanding the virtual economy can be a game in itself. Trading, Auction Houses, and Player Marketplaces To facilitate the exchange of goods and services, MMORPGs feature trading systems, auction houses, and player marketplaces. These mechanisms allow players to buy and sell items, negotiate prices, and barter for what they need. Whether you're a shrewd merchant looking to make a fortune or a savvy shopper searching for the best deals, these trading platforms provide a bustling hub of activity and opportunities for savvy players. Economic Challenges and Balancing Maintaining a healthy and balanced economy within an MMORPG is no easy task. Developers must carefully consider factors such as inflation, scarcity, and the impact of new content on the market. Ensuring that the economy remains vibrant and stable requires constant monitoring and adjustments. Just like in the real world, economic challenges can arise, presenting opportunities for creative solutions and unexpected twists in the virtual world. 8. Future Trends and Innovations in MMORPG Design The future of MMORPGs holds exciting possibilities with the emergence of virtual reality (VR) technology. Imagine stepping into a fully immersive virtual world, where you can see, hear, and interact with everything around you. VR has the potential to elevate MMORPGs to a whole new level, making them even more engrossing and captivating. Prepare to embark on adventures where the line between the game and reality becomes delightfully blurred. Dynamically Changing Environments MMORPGs are known for their vast and detailed worlds, but imagine if those worlds changed and evolved over time. The future of MMORPG design may involve dynamic environments that react to players' actions and have a lasting impact. Imagine battling a powerful dragon and witnessing the destruction it leaves in its wake. These evolving worlds could provide a sense of consequence and make players feel like they are truly part of a living, breathing universe. Emerging Cross-Platform and Mobile MMORPGs As technology advances, MMORPGs are becoming more accessible across different platforms. Whether you're gaming on a PC, console, or mobile device, the future holds the promise of seamless cross-platform gameplay. This means you can adventure with your friends, regardless of whether they prefer a keyboard and mouse or gaming on the go. The world of MMORPGs is expanding, and soon you'll be able to join the action from wherever you are. With character customization, cooperative gameplay, virtual economies, and exciting future innovations, MMORPGs continue to captivate players around the world. It’s still funny to me that 2 / 3 of the Hearthstone cards featuring void elves are ... demon hunters — a class we currently cannot play in World of Warcraft. We’ve already got confirmation that race / class restrictions are being lifted in the future, so this is more than likely happening sooner rather than later - especially with how their models are the same as blood elves - but it’s still funny the playable race with the least representation in Hearthstone is depicting something not currently playable in the MMO. Other races have unplayable combos represented, but they have a large assortment of cards. Not just 3. It’s just funny.
