Okay, this is going to be a bit of an odd ask, but let's give this a shot anyway.
So, my family and I are watching The Legend of Calamity Jane on Tubi, and my Step-Mom says she vaguely remembers seeing it air. Unfortunately, we're not exactly sure where it aired since most sources only cite it airing on Canal+ in France and The WB in the U.S., and we're in Canada.
So... Canadians, if you remember it airing, I need to know, what channel and when, because I've looked through some available YTV and Teletoon listings and have not found it. The show was just a bit before my time (I’m a ’98 baby) so I have no recollection of it ever being on TV, so I’m curious. I have a hunch it aired on Teletoon because that seemed like the “Cooler” network, but YTV did air Peter Pan & The Pirates and Sam & Max too, so it is not out of reason to assume it could’ve aired on that channel either.
This is probably going to be a dead end, but I still need to put the ask out there.

It's weird. As a competition for a child's attention, one out of three Canadian tv channels exists as is.
Family Channel lost distributing rights for Disney Channel programs, so, no one's watching that.
They rebranded Teletoon as Cartoon Network Canada, with the other CN channel rebranded as Boomerang. CN itself is now an empty husk, wheezing out reruns and reboots. The last haven for Teletoon is in Amazon Prime.
And Canadian Nickelodeon, YTV, is still kicking with fresh content and the occasional Disney movie.
So, I guess, YTV is the ultimate victor of the Canadian children's tv channel wars... by default.

AN ORAL HISTORY OF YTV IN THE 1990S.
Tumblr media
Will Sloan, the co-host of two movie focused podcasts, The Important Cinema Club and Michael & Us, but more importantly, the man banned from Twitter for seven days for hoping baby Yoda would die painfully, has re-released his 'Oral History of YTV', but this time on Amazon in book form.
"Some years ago I wrote an oral history of the beloved Canadian children's TV channel YTV. It's sadly no longer online... but now exists as a chapbook and ebook." - Will Sloan via Twitter
Before I write anything else please visit the following Amazon links to purchase said book. Canada: http://Keepitweird.ca USA: https://a.co/d/ium1Ion
As an enthusiastic listener of The Important Cinema Club, I find myself filled with anticipation at the mere thought of being able to read and reminisce about the fun times I had watching YTV.
Tumblr media
As a child of the 90s, there's one thing I can confidently say: YTV played a paramount role in shaping the upbringing of myself and my friends. Fond memories flood back as we recall tuning in eagerly to catch our favorite shows. It was a magical experience where every viewing promised an unforgettable adventure.
YTV was more than just a television channel; it was a gateway to happiness and endless entertainment. For kids of that era, including myself, it was a cherished part of our daily routine. From captivating animated series to hilarious live-action shows, YTV never failed to deliver on its promise of providing a good time for its viewers.
Each show on YTV offered a unique and imaginative world. Samurai Pizza Cats took us on action-packed adventures with heroic feline warriors. Reboot, with its groundbreaking CGI animation, transported us into the captivating realm of Mainframe, where Bob and his friends fought viruses and protected the digital universe. Nanalan' enchanted us with its adorable puppetry, and Stickin' Around had us laughing with the misadventures of Stacy and Bradley. These shows not only entertained us but also ignited our imaginations and made us feel like we were a part of something extraordinary.
As the years passed, YTV continued to evolve, bringing new shows and fresh memories to subsequent generations. The nostalgic pull of this beloved channel remains strong, connecting 90s kids and beyond through a shared love for the iconic shows of that era. Even now, as we reminisce about the fun times we had watching YTV, we can't help but feel a sense of joy and warmth in our hearts.
While the focus here has been on relishing the past, there's something worth mentioning about preserving the legacy of YTV for future generations. The influence of this cherished channel on Canadian culture and the hearts of its viewers is undeniable. For those who may not be familiar with YTV, it's essential to introduce them to the magic it once brought into our lives.
If you're a Canadian who grew up cherishing the wonder of YTV, or if you simply want to experience a piece of Canadian television history, I urge you to check out this book. Delve into the nostalgia, reminisce about the shows that filled your heart with joy, and let the magic of YTV transport you back to a simpler time.
Order your copy today, and let the journey down memory lane begin anew.

People? In MY computer?? It's more likely than you think!
The following is a fanvertisment and is not connected to the show. ****Yet.*** *Also yes, this is the fourth time I'm posting this because TUMBLR WONT LET ME EDIT SPELLING MISTAKES!
ANYWAY,
Tumblr media
Once upon a time, back in 1987, Dire Straits put out this music video for “Money for Nothing”, which, as you know, was a song about wanting my MTV.
youtube
The video was made by two guys (Gavin Blair and Ian Pearson) on a very moody computer. After the video went out, these two guys went to a pub:
Ian: “Hey, we should make a whole show like this!”
Gavin: “Dude, making three minutes almost killed us.”
And so it was decided!🎉
The two guys were joined by two other guys (Phil Mitchell and John Grace) and created the Hub, which then became Mainframe Entertainment. They got even more people, and then they all holed up in this hotel.
Tumblr media
They were mad lads with a dream: a whole cgi animated show, and they made it happen a whole year before Toy Story!
Behold! ReBoot!
(Yes that fever dream was real)
Tumblr media
Now before I get any of this:
Tumblr media
Let me lay this down. If you can’t with the animation of the first season because it was CUTTING EDGE IN 1994, you can close your eyes and listen to it. ReBoot wasn’t just a CGI gimmick. The characters are fully developed, the voice actors are peerless, the plot is sharp, and there’s so many easter eggs that you’ll never find them all.
Never
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(And yes the episode "Bad Bob" was the actual catalyst for Fury Road. Look it up)
ReBoot is about what life is like in a computer (in the 90s, because it was the 90s) called Mainframe (because of course it is). People are sprites, the guys that look like 1s and 0s are binomes (which represent 1s and 0s). Bad guys are viruses, and the good guy is a Guardian named Bob, who is a certified cinnamon roll.
In the first season the eps are light and self-contained, mainly because there was constant friction between the Mainframe studios and the Board of Standards and Practices.
They still got away with some pretty dark stuff, like Megabyte (virus) making Enzo (the kid) watch his dog get sliced open (dog got away, obviously) , Dot (sprite) have a hallucinatory breakdown, and the fridge horror of realizing the thousands of worm things (nulls) that plunged off a bridge to their death were actually people.
And Hex's (virus
best girl) scary face single-handedly traumatized an entire generation. 🙂
Tumblr media
But busting through a window was a no go, because WhAt If tHe cHiLdReN dID iT tOo?
Anyway, halfway through the second season, ABC cut them loose, so they were like, fuck it, we’re going to start going hard. The story shifted from episodic to arcs and things start to get serious.
Tumblr media
Third season the show moved to YTV in Canada, which gave no fucks about shielding the innocent children.
So it got DARK
Tumblr media
How dark?
The UK refused to show the entire season, so the audience there had to wait until pirated copies made it across the pond to see how it ended.
Also by 1997, the animation was gorgeous. (Best example of third season animation I could think of that didn't have spoilers)
youtube
The show was green-lit for a fourth season on Cartoon Network, but halfway through production Warner Bros took over and the same fucking thing happened.
Because Mainframe was halfway done, they decided not to scrap all of it, but knowing they wouldn't be able to finish it correctly, Mainframe stripped anything that would hint at Season Four's true ending, then left what remained on a cliff-hanger of angst.
FOR 22 YEARS
Tumblr media
(It's also why the last four eps of season four seem to make no sense)
And so it was.
Other crap happened, the soul left Mainframe, and its animated corpse spat out “The Guardian Code” in 2018.
Tumblr media
But never say die! The year is (almost) 2024, 30 years later. ReBoot shall rise from the dead, because here come the documentary!!
youtube
Do you dare see what you’ve been missing?
What the (UK) government doesn’t want you to know??
Then come on down to ReBoot!
We got:
Magnificent bastards with sexy voices!
youtube
(Tony Jay at his best)
Kickass women who could probably crush your head with their thighs and you’d enjoy it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Innuendos in a kid's show!
youtube
youtube
Tumblr media
💗 This adorable cinnamon roll!! 💗
Tumblr media
Insane third season glow-ups!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOUR NEW GOD
Tumblr media
These guys!
Tumblr media
(Gay roller-skating binome is my boi. I named him Jerry)
Nonstop cultural refs (You'll never find them all. Never.)
Tumblr media
(There are literally videos dedicated to trying)
So many computer puns!
Tumblr media
Body Horror!
Tumblr media
Existential Crisis!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HAVE I MENTIONED YOUR NEW GOD?
youtube
This is it, folks! The real thing, the gem hidden in the moose-filled forests of Canadia!🌲🌲🌲
Take a trip inside a mid-90’s computer!
Tumblr media
See the World Wide Web! (omg):
Tumblr media
Witness the original purple Gamecubes that randomly fall from the sky when the owner of the computer (OUR GOOD LORD THE USER) wants to play a game. If it lands on people and they lose, they dissolve into mindless energy leeches, fated to tormented by their former bretheren for all of eternity.
Just like in real life! 🙃
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So watch the eps! They on YouTube!
youtube
I think they're on Pluto, Hulu, Sling, and Tubi too! Also DVDs for people who have the patience to wait for them!
WATCH! BELIEVE! SUFFER THE SOUL-CRUSHING RAGE OF THE SEASON 4 CLIFF-HANGER!* (come on, its fun!)*
HYPE THE DOC!
The more people hype, the better the chances of actually getting it finished.
NOW SHARE THIS WITH EVERYONE!
And now I will leave you with this screenshot from the ep "Painted Windows", where dicks can clearly be seen drawn upon the wall behind the fleeing anthropomorphized television.
Tumblr media
(PS: If you heard the clown pic at the top of the page in your head, you're welcome)
IMPORTANT UPDATE
This message is now approved by Gavin Blair! He's an awesome guy. Show him some love on TWITTER (fuck you musk) at @TheRealMrSweary Also, if you want to share this with non-tumblr friends, here is my attempt at a webpage version:

47 BLs Announced for 2024
Here are the BLs I have logged on the Spreadsheet of Doom (TM) as announced for 2024 (with supporting evidence, so not just options or acquisitions) as of the beginning of the year. Bold are the ones I'm most intrigued by .

Five years later, will anything have changed? This is Japan, so probubly not. More here.
Perfect Propose
Fuji TV (the Pornographer series) adapting Mayo Tsurakame’s manga, production team includes Tadaaki Horai (My Love Mix-Up!) and Takeshi Miyamoto (scriptwriter for “Old Fashion Cupcake”). Hiro’s so stressed at work he barely has time to eat so he passes out on the sidewalk. An unfamiliar face saves him and insists that they once promised to marry each other.

He and Jaehee, his female best friend and roommate, frequent nearby bars where they push away their worries about life, love, and money with soju and Marlboros. But as time passes Jaehee settles down and leaves Young to face his problems on his own, finding comfort in the arms of the series of men, including one whose handsomeness is matched by his coldness and another who might be the great love of his life. Not really BL. To star Kim Go-eun (The King: Eternal Monarch), Noh Sang-hyun (aka Steve Sanghyun as Young) and Nam Yoon Su (The King’s Affection). More here.

Fantasy BL about a man who falls in love with a merman.

Monster Next Door
WeTV Adapted from the novel Godzilla Next Door by Jiwinil. It portrays an introvert who lives mostly in his room, until an extrovert moves in next door. He is loud, frantic and annoying. Do opposites really attract? Will they find a way to get along?
youtube
My Golden Blood
GMMTV. Okay, I do find Joss very watchable but this looks very bad and also very like Kissable Lips. But at least land is finally giving us the trashy gay vampires we richly deserve?
youtube
My Love Mix-Up Thai Remake (GemniForth)
GMMTV. Hum, well I do love this pair and I did like the original and maybe this time these characters will actually kiss? I'm actually fine with this pick-up. I kind of enjoy seeing different countries remake the same IP. Especially if it's IP I'm mostly unfazed by.
My Stand-In AKA My Stand In
Chinese IP ALERT! Adapted from the novel Professional Body Double (职业替身) by Shui Qiang Cheng (水千丞) stars Up (Lovely Writer) and Poom (Bake Me Please).
OMG Vampire AKA OMG! Vampire (LeeFrank)
Frank and Lee Long Shi are back only vampires now. So many vampires.
youtube
Only Boo!
New main pair in an idol romance about a boy who dances good and a food stand vendor. Other side of the tracks, grumpy/sunshine pair who fall deeply in love but, of course, to become an idol baby boy can't date. Boyband but from GMMTV? Control your singing and I'm game.
Ossan‘s Love Thai Remake (EarthMix
Ugh, why?!?!
Red Peafowl
More Thai mafia stuffs.
Spare Me Your Mercy
Increased rates of deaths in terminal patients has a police captain investigating the palliative care doctor with whom he's fallen in love. Their relationship deepens but the mystery persists, driven by mistrust. Adapted from the novel Euthanasia by Sammon (Triage, Manner of Death) stars some old guard BL actors: Tor Thanapob from Hormones as the doctor and (fuck me YES) Jaylerr from Great Men Academy and goddamn Grean Fictions as the captain!
youtube
Spirit Reborn AKA Kemjira Will Survive
Star Hunter (of all studios) adapting supposedly the scariest BL. Khem is born cursed. A daughter would be safe but a son dies at 20 so Khem’s mother cleverly gives him a girl’s name, Khemjira “forever safe.” But Knem is baout to turn 20 and he doesn't think it's working so he seeks the help of a cursebreaker, turns out to be his great love from a prvious life.
Star Scope
Wabi Sabi trailer here. Looks sad, one of them is terminally ill, abandons his bf in high school them meet again in uni.
The Boy Next World (BossNoeul)
Same couple as LITA, this is the backstory of Cirrus & Phugun from TharnType 2 played by different actors.
The Hell Guards AKA Hey Don't Mess With My Heart
Boy wakes up from a coma and becomes a messenger between grim reapers and the underworld. Oh will it be... bureaucratic? I think it WILL.
The Hidden Moon
Casting happened 9/23. This is a supernatural romance (my ghost boyfriend trope) ‘เดือนพราง’ by Violet Rain. A Bangkok writer is hired to write an article about an old mansion in Chiang Mai which is being converted into a café. He gets into an accident and nearly dies on his way there. After that, he sees the ghosts of people who died at the mansion, one boy catches his attention. Stars Benjamin Brasier (2 Moons 2) and Folk Touch Inthirat from Brothers. Trailer here.
The Next Prince (ZeeNew)
Domundi brings us more ZeeNew in a fantasy/historical set in a palace where Zee plays a knight and Nu a prince - FUCK YES PLEASE. I did not expect this pair to stick so I really hope this happens. Trailer here.
The Rebound (MeenPing)
VIU Basketball based romance staring Meen (a national basketball player, so yay for that).
The Trainee (OffGun)
GMMTV Office set, may not be BL. Trailer here.
Time the series
MFlow Entertainment for Gaga, WeTV, Channel 3 trailer here. Airs 1/9 After witnessing the death of his beloved Chris from a gunshot wound, the heartbroken actor Foam is given a pocket watch that allows him to go back in time and discover the truth… Can Foam take the chance to set things right and bring Chris back from the brink of death? Only time will tell…
To Be Continued
High school sweethearts who had a bad break up reunite when both of them have full times jobs but coming out is still a problem. Trailer here.
Vampire Project (BounPrem)
Wabi Sabi's My Broccoli only now... vampires.
Wandee Godday
GMMTV and AllThis Entertainment producing a very pulp offering for GMMTV with new pair GreatInn doing high heat Boxer meets surgeon. It features a one night stand, fake relationship, and all the cheesiest of tropes. Also features Drake, Podd, and Thor+ pretty boy (be still my heart). This is totally my kind of BL even if it actually isn't GMMTV's style of BL, so I'm intrigued. Trailer here.
We Are (PondPhuwin)
GMMTV's university friendship Bl featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawin - basically ALL in the good kind of messy friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is gay. I'm IN! Trailer here.
A reminder we had c. 136 BLs release in 2023 but c. 55 that did not get made.
That seems about right.
Of those announced we seem to get about 2/3 actually released for the year we are told they'll release in.

Was Qubo actually coming back?
So I heard a rumor that's been going around that The Qubo Channel, an American children's tv channel that ran from 2007-2021, was coming back in 2023 and this idiot fan did everything they could to make it seem real, videos and everything but it all turned out to be fake. They said that the company E Scripps announced it but they never did and this random person made an entire wiki page of it too. Qubo is officially never coming back, although I hope someone will have a solution or come up with a replacement kids channel. It's sad that kids have nothing that genuinely teaches them good lessons, besides Bluey. Don't get me wrong, I love Bluey, Bluey's awesome but it's like the only thing that kids can watch nowadays that's good for them. In my opinion, you need MORE THAN ONE SHOW! You don't have to have as many shows as I did growing up, but you can't only just have one show either.
I'll admit I was more of a tv kid, but I grew up in a small, dumpy town in Pennsylvania and I had no siblings or kids in the neighborhood to play with. I also never really had close friends at school who I got to hang out with outside of school, because school days lasted long and we were private people. When I got home, I'd most likely draw, watch tv, or take a nap. I did spend time outside but not in the autumn and winter as much because I hated cold, especially when I got older. I did watch a lot more tv than most kids did but it wasn't an unhealthy amount. I also wasn't really a Disney movie kid as much either. Disney channel? Yes, but I didn't really watch much of their animated movies growing up, especially not the older ones that everyone else grew up with. I had older parents and also was raised by my grandma, and no siblings so it's not like we had family movies nights like some families. Being an only child, I was basically the boss of the tv and my mom grew up playing outside and not much of a tv kid, so she just let me watch the kids shows that were playing on tv. Just to clear things up, I was born in November of 2002 and my mom gave birth to me when she was 42 years old, so a lot of stuff from her time wasn't really meant for kids. So yeah, I mostly just grew up watching tv channels. I was lucky enough to have Qubo, Sprout and the Nickelodeon and Disney channels. Lucky for me, I didn't watch much Cartoon Network, which in my opinion was kind of a good thing because a lot of stuff back then was inappropriate. Thank God I had more relaxing and... less unhinged shows to watch on channels like Sprout and Qubo. I know Qubo had its fair share of weird shows like Grossology and Being Ian, but most of the Qubo shows were good. In fact, some of my favorite shows ever came from Qubo!
Let's have a little talk about a well known Canadian show that was based off a book series, called "Scaredy Squirrel". If you were in Canada, you probably watched Scaredy Squirrel on YTV or Treehouse, but us Americans watched it on Cartoon Network, Disney X.D or Qubo. I was the kid who watched it on Qubo because I ignored the Cartoon Network channel growing up and I think around 2013 was when I started to hate Disney so... yeah. I became a fan of Scaredy Squirrel through Qubo and that show means so much to me. Another show that means a lot to me is called "Marvin the tap-dancing Horse" which originally aired on PBS kids for like 2 years, as part of a block called the "Bookworm bunch" which only lasted a short time and plus, I wasn't even born yet. I got introduced to Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse through the Qubo Channel and I absolutely fell in love with it. Honestly, those are both very underrated shows and deserve an actual FANDOM rather than 3 fans. A few people I know have at least heard of Scaredy Squirrel barely anyone has heard of Marvin the dancing horse (and yes, Marvin is based off a book too). I highly recommend those shows, as well as many others!
Cable tv is kind of shutting down now anyway, and it's sad. All we have now is streaming services and a lot of them just don't have those nice kids shows that Qubo had. A lot of those shows were cute and not too overstimulating for the younger kids, and almost everything they have now is for older kids. Sprout became Universal Kids, which is more for older kids and they didn't need to do that. We need more things for little kids too. Also, as a 21 year old with trauma, I don't like rough adult shows like South park and Hazbin hotel, I want more calming shows like Scaredy Squirrel and Toddworld. (Also, I'll put a list of my favorite shows from Qubo in my last paragraph).
I hope one day I can make my own tv channel or streaming service to replace Qubo or Sprout, but nothing can really "replace" my favorite channels growing up. Also, if you want some relaxing kids shows from Qubo to watch, I'll give you some;
Scaredy Squirrel, Toddworld, Stella & Sam, Timothy goes to school, Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse, Maggie & the Ferocious Beast, Harry & his Bucket of Dinosaurs, Miss Spider Sunny Patch, Babar, Veggietales, Gofrette, I Spy, My Friend Rabbit, Sandra the Fairytale Detective, Willa's Wild Life, Pecola, Turbo Dogs, Sidekick, and Stickin' Around (although there's a trigger warning).
Tell me what you think and if you agree! Are you too a Qubo or Sprout fan?

I'm watching that Quinton Reviews video on Nickoons Unite
I guess it never really registered it, but it seems like the US has a way higher degree of like, brand recognition than we did. There's this emphasis placed on brand synergy and a network having a unified identity where aspects can cross over and the like, there
By contrast, Canadian Shows didn't seem to have that. Stuff was ON a network, it was ON Teletoon or YTV or Treehouse or whatever. But with the exception of a few minor flagship series, there was no Teletoon Brand where like, Cybersix and Kaput and Zoskey would be in the same thing. And you'd sorta be expected to understand things like "Oh yes, this show is from America, this show is from Japan, this one is from Quebec," even if you didn't know which was which all the time
Most notably, for a long time one of the hosts for The Zone - a programming block on YTV - was also the voice actor for Chibiusa from Sailor Moon and so a lot of focus was placed on the dubbing of anime. It's like, these shows come from many places, and you appreciated them as shows and not a unified thing. Especially things like Avatar felt much more in-line with the other anime-influenced shows like Dai-Gata, Spider Riders, Cybersix and Code Lyoko than something I would ever associate with Nickelodeon, and seeing Invader Zim in these crossover games with Spongebob is very... "Wait, really? That's not really a show to be aimed at that audience."
But it seems like so much more emphasis was placed on the Brand Identity in the US. How it's like, no, you are intended to think of Catdog and Invader Zim as the same kind of thing.
I've noticed a majority of people I know in-person have sorta checked out of US media; they find it super corporate and not very interesting. I wonder if we are just sorta like... Culturally a lot less used to having the Brand Synergy thing pushed on us than the US. Like, maybe everything being tied into everything else is kind of weird and alienating to people here. But I also like, don't talk to normal people much, so who knows?

Obscure Animation Subject #80: The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police
As I stated before, it was originally scheduled for a Twitter post a week ago, but moved because of abysmal TOS update. I do wanna note that Musk isn’t as bad as he seems to be, so yeah…
Anyways, this show is based the comic series by Steve Purcell from 1987. The show is developed and head written by J.D Smith, with all episodes being storyboarded by Bob Smith, directed by Johnny Test storyboard artist Steve Whitehouse and animation direction by Stuart Shankly. The series is a collaboration between the American Fox network and Canadian animation studio Nelvana, with 13 half-hours of 24 segments produced. The series aired from October 4, 1997 to April 25, 1998 on Fox’s Fox Kids programming block. In Canada, it also aired on YTV.
This is a police comedy about vigilante private investigators Sam, an anthropomorphic dog, and Max, a lagomorph or "hyperkinetic rabbity-thing", as they investigate strange and bizarre cases and confront the criminals responsible.
I’m not the biggest fan of Sam and Max, but do admire them. I enjoy seeing the duo play off from each other in pretty much any sort of media. Having a television series sounds like a great idea since they always had so much life just by being in pages, and thankfully this show delivers! The show puts them on unusual adventures, whether they be on the moon, in the center of the earth, or even work with time travel… it seems like they’ll accept any mission! The show’s animation is also very clean and this was one of the first animated shows to be animated in digital ink and paint, and I’ll say it holds up! I can also say that this might’ve been one of Nelvana’s most expensive animated shows from the time, as digital ink and paint software was still in fresh and new at this point, not many shows used it and its usually used in big budget animated films. Because of its qualities, it won the 1998 Gemini Award for "Best Animated Series". However, due to the possibility expensive budget and low ratings, it was cancelled and no second season was produced.
However, in recent years, it gained a cult following after certain episodes were released on VHS by Sullivan Entertainment, and GameTap releasing episodes in 2006 to promote Telltale Games' Sam & Max: Season One. As a result in 2008, the entire series was released on DVD by Shout! Factory, which includes a lot of extras that appeal to fans of the show. And in 2022, the show became available to stream on Tubi.
It’s the comic series in beautiful animated form. The jokes are great, the characters are as charming as before, and of course the expensive animation from Nelvana. Of course I recommend this to any fan of Sam and Max comics and even newcomers, it's only 13 half hours too. I would argue it deserved to last longer than that, it didn’t due to what I assumed earlier, but oh well.

Another One of My
Obsessions
First Experience With Queer
Representation In Animation
Sailor Uranus
&
Sailor Neptune
Tumblr media
Part One
Sailor Moon, my first introduction into the world of Manga and Anime. Like many, I fell in love with the ditzy yet full of heart Usagi Tsukino (aka Serena in the western dubs) and her band of unique yet loyal friends. Like most ensemble casts, the writer made sure to make each character different, yet all lovable in their own ways.
Tumblr media
Each edition of the manga and episodes of the anime would have me finding a new favourite member amongst the group, never leaving behind their two cats and mentors Luna and Artemis.
It was in the third act of the story, that two characters were introduced to viewers and readers, Sailor Neptune (Michiru Kaiou, known as Michelle in the western dubs) and Sailor Uranus (Haruka Tenou, known as Amara in the western dubs).
Depending on how someone came to discover Sailor Moon, they may have had the misfortune of watching western dubbed episodes, who had the notion that they were ‘protecting’ children and viewers by taking it upon themselves to change the nature of the relationship between Haruka and Michiru.
Tumblr media
Try as they may to cut as many suggestive scenes as possible, the animation aired in the west that was left couldn’t do enough to change the relationship shown between the characters, who were originally written to be lovers.
This made it all the more ridiculous the ‘straight-washing’ the west tried, with their idea to depict the two as cousins and not lovers as in the original content.
How confusing it must have been for the ‘young impressionable minds’ they were trying to shield from seeing queer love, to see ‘cousins’ in romantic situations.
All because of the intolerance of showing queer representation on screen.
“Another group of fans in a tizzy today are fans of the Toonami edit of Sailor Moon S. Back between 1999 and 2000, Cartoon Network and YTV Canada aired a watered down edit of Sailor Moon S, in which Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune were still allowed to be touchy-feely with each other, but were edited as "cousins" who touch each other, rather than lesbians…… because according to Cloverway, the now defunct Toei Animation subsidiary responsible for the change, cousins touching each other is more "kid friendly" than lesbians touching each other. Sense made? None.” [quoted from link below]
“However, whether in an attempt to be more faithful to the original Japanese or through failure to edit consistently, several episodes of the former English dub retained a noticeable amount of their casual flirting.[49] Due to the censorship and problematic dubbing, some viewers inferred not only a homosexual relationship between the two girls, but also an incestuous one.” [1]
Tumblr media
The character of Haruka also introduced me to gender nonconformity, to masc presenting women, to non-binary, bigender and transgender identities. Haruka may have simply been a ‘butch lesbian’ or one or more of the aforementioned.

Reading the manga and watching the anime has been a very important part of my journey.
A seemingly childish show about school girl heroes and villains gave me my first understanding of different types of queer representations. It opened my eyes to not just love between two women but how simple it could and should be. It showed me in relation to these two characters, the different ways women can chose to present themselves and still have purpose, have friendship groups, be accepted and be themselves.
Unfortunately it also showed me the different levels of acceptance of healthy queer relationships and the lengths some go to, to deny representation.
Tumblr media
Take away any biases, beliefs or judgements about queer representation in animation, their story is one to be told and one to be witnessed. They showed humour, friendship, loyalty, like and love.
They may not have been the main characters but they were one of my favourite, for what they represented but also for their individual characters.
Kudos to Haruka & Michiru for being kickass heroes and a cool introduction to queer characters.

I think you'd like this story: "Naruto Anime Analysis" by i_am_music_criticism on Wattpad
Masashi Kishimoto is the author and illustrator of the Japanese comic series Naruto. It follows the tale of young ninja Naruto Uzumaki, who aspires to be recognized by his peers and the Hokage, the head of his village. After that, Pierrot and Aniplex turned Part I of the Manga into an anime television series, which broadcast on TV Tokyo for 220 episodes between October 2002 and February 2007; the English-dubbed version of the series ran on Cartoon Network and YTV between September 2005 and December 2009.
This book will focus not only on the summary of each episode provided by Wikipedia, but I will also give an analysis of each episode found in the anime, "Naruto".
