Tattoos in BLs
Dean [Until We Meet Again & Between Us] - I do not remember seeing this, but I have the picture, so it must've happened. It’s a compass on his hip because he was lost without Phram and always looking for direction.
Tumblr media
Win [Until We Meet Again & Between Us] – We will hopefully find out something next month when the series begins, but even if we don’t, we can still appreciate that these are henna including those angel wings.
Tumblr media
Jang JaeYoung [Semantic Error] - Does it have meaning? As he stated in the series, “Not really. I just liked it” but I'm seeing an eclipse thanks to Ayan's hoodie.
Tumblr media
Chu SangWoo [Semantic Error] – Hand drawn by JaeYoung, and it is the first image JaeYoung ever drew for him when they first met in the episode one.
Tumblr media
Black/White [Not Me] – White had to get it because Black had it, and Black had it because..no idea, but it could symbolize death or strength.
Tumblr media
Yok [Not Me] – Mandarin on the flank means mom, but the birds and the forearm one, no idea.
Tumblr media
Tonhon [Tonhon Chonlatee] – “An anchor is what a navigator or sailor uses to hold his vessel to the ocean. Tonhon means a navigator. That’s why I had this anchor tattooed on my left chest to remind me that my heart will not drift away. It will be with the ocean and that is your name, Chonlatee, forever. Every time I look at it, it reminds me that I have you in my heart all the time.”
Tumblr media
Kamol [Unforgotten Night] – I didn’t watch this, so I’m guessing that it was because he had pet tigers, and I'm fine believing that.
Tumblr media
Mangkorn [Big Dragon] – Mangkorn means dragon, and he is the dragon (Yang) to Yai’s tiger (Yin).
Tumblr media
Porsche [KinnPorsche] – A phoenix because that was his underground fighting alias, fire is his friend (he gets the fire started in the woods, he starts a fire in his first week on the job, he smokes), his mom used to tell him stories about the phoenix rising from the ashes, his color in the series is yellow, and he is the phoenix/fire (Yang) to Kinn’s tortoise/water personality (Yin - he's like his mom).
Tumblr media
Pete [KinnPorsche] – “No legacy is so rich as honesty” is from Shakespeare’s comedy All’s Well That Ends Well, which is about a woman of lower rank trying to marry the man she loves who is of a higher rank. The quote shows not only to live an honest life (in a play full of dishonesty), but to be honest with oneself, something that Pete does in the end when…you know.
Tumblr media
Ram [My Engineer] – Has a dream catcher on his neck to chase away bad dreams, a wolf on his arm, a tribal turtle on his shoulder, and a few others.
Tumblr media
Forth [2 Moons 2] – Actor’s actual tattoo. Might be a Sak Yant tattoo for good fortune.
Tumblr media
Sarawat [2gether] – Actor’s actual tattoo. I think it was something about remembering who you are.
Tumblr media
Gene [Lovely Writer] - Actor's actual tattoo. A family portrait. Thanks @calipigio
Tumblr media
Phupha [A Tale of Thousand Stars] - Actor's actual tattoo. It now has a quote above it. He also has two thigh tattoos ("Be somebody nobody thought you could be" and "Every sunset is an opportunity to reset"), "PEACE" on his bicep, and an upper back tattoo. *whispers "I love him"* Thanks @veemark
Tumblr media
Ai [Ai Long Nhai] – Actor's actual tattoo. A crescent moon. Thanks @mushiemadarame for letting me know it's his.
Tumblr media
Ayan [The Eclipse] – Actor’s actual tattoos. The thigh one is a G-Dragon lyric telling his mother not to worry about him. Hip tattoo is "beautiful" (seen in Only Friends) *A little salty about the hip one*

Different types of tattoos
Batek tattoo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Philippines, there is a tradition that has been practised by women for many years. This is popularly referred to as “batok” meaning the art of tattooing your body with tribal designs using bamboo stick and thorn. Batok is believed to have been practised for about one thousand years.
Sak Yant tattoo
The Sak Yant Tattoo has become ingrained in the Thai culture as a way to provide protection and gain good luck through the mystical side of traditional philosophies and the Buddhist influence.  Usually the Monk or Ajarn who preforms the Sak Yant has studied the magical side of the ancient traditions and incorporates charms and magical blessings in addition to the design of the Sak Yant itself.  This additional learning comes from the pre-Buddhist era, and while not strictly part of Buddhism, it is part of the traditional culture of Thailand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Irezumi tattoo
Like much of Japan's art, tattooing can be traced back centuries.
The earliest indication of the body art phenomenon can be found on the seemingly tattooed faces of clay figurines from 5000 BCE. Another ancient mention of these markings is evident in Wei Chih, a Chinese chronicle from the 3rd century. The telling text reveals that, at the time, “men young and old, all tattoo their faces and decorate their bodies with designs.”
In the 7th century, however, the art form took a turn. At this point, people began to view tattoos unfavorably. By 720 CE, they were even used as a form of branding and punishment for prisoners, courtesans, and criminals. This practice would last for over 1,000 years.
In the 18th century, Japanese tattoos underwent yet another transformation. Due to the prevalence of the colorful and pictorial Ukiyo-e woodblock print, tattoos rendered in this style became popular among groups of people with lower social statuses, like laborers, peasants, and even gangs. Given its ties to the lower class and its long and unsavory history, Irezumi was eventually outlawed in Japan—though artists based in the country could still legally tattoo foreigners.
This loophole proved particularly important in the 19th century, when artists began tattooing nonnative sailors. As a result of this, their work—and all of the cultural motifs, symbols, and styles that accompanied it—was eventually “exhibited” all over the world. Thus, though still an illegal form of art for residents of its home country, the Japanese tattoo gained unexpected global prominence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The meanings of Irezmi Drawing. Dragon_They are beloved and revered mythical creatures who are all-powerful creatures that fuse together the forces of a serpent’s flexible body, the koi’s hard-wearing scales, the eagle’s formidable claws, and the mighty deer’s horns. With all this strength, they aren’t portrayed as savage beasts, but as wise protectors of humanity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Koi Fish_They’re believed to bring prosperity and good fortune, so households often have them as pets. But more than being physical beauty, they are very strong and resilient creatures who are able to swim upstream through rough currents.
Tumblr media
Snake
While being called a snake is never a good thing, the Japanese also see snakes as very wise creatures. Much of this is influenced by Chinese beliefs, which is a common theme in almost all of the motifs in this list. The Chinese zodiac says that people born in the year of the snake are highly intellectual and philosophical. Additionally, because snakes periodically shed their skin, they also denote healing, regeneration, good health and even immortality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kintaro
This ‘golden boy’ was named this way more for his superhuman strength than the color of his skin. The stuff of legend, Kintarō was said to actually have truly existed during the Heian Period (794 – 1185), smashing rocks, bending and uprooting trees, wrestling bears, and battling demons from a very young age.
He was also believed to have been the guardian of a samurai named Minamoto no Yorimitsu later on in his life. He is often rendered with red skin and wrestling a giant black koi.
Kintaro is chosen as a tattoo to either impart his legendary strength to the person or serve as a guardian, as he did to the samurai.
Tumblr media
Oni Mask
Personally, I don’t think Oni masks are the best tattoos to have just because their bulging eyes and aggressive expression can be a shocking thing to see on a mirror when you wake up in the morning. Well, maybe that’s part of why its chosen in the first place. An Oni is a fierce-looking demon or ogre with horns, fangs, and tusks.
Tumblr media
Head
Head object is Gore and barbarism aside, there’s actually more to it than being a creepy tattoo to freak people out. It’s a nod to the samurai practice of headhunting and symbolizes fearlessness.
Tumblr media
Old school tattoo
Tattoo called Old School began to use navigation-related factors to tattoo when sailors were influenced by the natives of other continents during the past ship trade.
These tattoo drawings were used as a means of recording wishes, superstitions, or navigation at sea.
Generally, it uses monochrome (blue, yellow, red, green) and is made of a thick black outline.
It is characterized by few or few shadow representations.
Previously, tattoo machines were not developed, so rather than sophisticated work, they had a rugged and concise design.
Typical navigation-related tattoos include swallows, sharks, ships, women, or anchors.
Tumblr media
swallow tattoo is the myth that if a sailor was to drown on their journey, if they had the tattoo, the bird would lift their soul to heaven.
Tumblr media
shark tattoo is Sailors were often exposed to sharks on their voyages at sea. By wearing a shark tattoo it was thought to protect you from the perils of the ocean. Sharks have no natural predators and this represents a reluctance to be victimised by others. Sharks have a strong sense of calm yet they are constantly on the move/rarely rest. This is representative of determination and a ‘keep moving forward’ attitude towards life and the ongoing challenges one may face.
Tumblr media
Also falling within the Maritime theme is the imagery of a ship. This of course, is a big part of a sailor’s life as it represents freedom. Once you set sail, there are no restrictions holding you back. As sailors are natural explorers, nothing could symbolise adventure more than the biggest tool used to execute their exploration and discoveries.
Furthermore, ships also have a homely nature to them. As this vessel was representative of one’s home away from home and also a means to return home when the time came.
Tumblr media
The anchor tattoo meaning is one of the most literal of tattoo designs. As an anchor will prevent a ship from drifting away, it represents stability and the grounded nature of one’s personality.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - Part 1
Day 157 – Chiang Mai
Tumblr media
Thai Market
I began my first full day in Northern Thailand in the most delicious way possible – with a full day at the Thai Farm Cooking School. Two of my dear friends from Vancouver - Norm and Dejan - had been to Chiang Mai about a month earlier, and had passed on this recommendation as a “must-do!” I was picked up from my hostel in the morning and joined a small group of other travellers, heading 20 minutes out of Chiang Mai and into the countryside. The cooking school was located in a beautiful organic farm, surrounded by fields of grazing water buffalo with mountains visible in the distance. On our way out of town, our instructor Ae took us to a local market for a brief tour, and helped us pick up the various Thai ingredients that we would be using in our cooking, including local vegetables and spices.

Thai Farm Cooking School
For the remainder of the day, we cooked and ate, and then cooked and ate some more! Our cooking stations were set up under a lofty bamboo building with open sides, surrounded by lush gardens and a fishpond. Throughout the day, Ae came around to each of us to offer her wealth of knowledge and tips to make the perfect Thai recipes! In total, I learned to cook 6 common dishes found in Northern Thailand, including Tom Yam Soup (hot and sour soup), Kaeng Kha Ri Gai (yellow curry), Poh Piah Tod (spring rolls), Som Tam (papaya salad), Gai Phad Met Mamuang Him Mapaan (stir-fried cashew nut chicken) and Khao Neow Ma Muang (mango and sticky rice). As part of the preparation for each recipe, Ae took us around the organic farm, to educate us on the herbs and vegetables needed in our dishes, and show us how to properly pick the fresh ingredients. It was fascinating to learn about how iconic Thai flavours were built up and created in each of these dishes. Our group ate each completed dish together, taking a break from cooking to chat and relax. In the late afternoon, we returned to Chiang Mai – completely full and very happy. Ae was incredibly kind to us, and made sure to send us on our way with a Thai cookbook so that we could try to recreate these dishes at home! It was a terrific kickoff to my time in Northern Thailand.

Day 158 – Chiang Mai
My second day in Chiang Mai had little agenda aside from meandering around the city to explore – and eating as much delicious Northern Thai food as possible! Surrounded by mountain ranges, Chiang Mai is the second-largest province in Thailand, and was the historic and cultural capital of the Lanna Kingdom from the 1200s to 1500s. In Thai, Lanna translates to “The Kingdom of A Million Rice Fields”, an apt description of the surrounding countryside! At the height of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai was also the centre of Buddhism in Thailand, which is reflected in over 300 temples, or “Wats” scattered throughout the city. The city also has strong Burmese influences, as the Lanna Kingdom was occupied by Burma for approximately 300 years, between the mid 1500s to 1800s. This is mostly seen in the incredible architecture found throughout the city.  The old city of Chiang Mai is a near perfect square, surrounded by a moat and ancient walls, which were actually designed to protect and defend against Burmese invaders. I could see that many of these walls and ramparts were still standing as I entered the historic centre of the city.
Tumblr media
One of the Many Stupas around Chiang Mai
As I began to explore Chiang Mai, there was a noticeable spiritual feeling throughout the city. I immediately found that Northern Thailand had a much more relaxed feeling than the Thai Islands that I had just come from. Around every corner I would spot a new temple, easily identified by their ornamented, tiered roofs. Buddhist monks could be seen walking in the streets, dressed in their distinctive orange robes and sandals. Tropical flowers and greenery spilled over the walls lining the streets. Motorcycles parked on the walkways, their sidecars packed to the brim with young coconuts. If you were thirsty, you could buy a coconut, which the vendor would slice open for you with a machete, so you could drink the coconut water inside. Prayer flags and lanterns were strung across gated courtyards, gently fluttering in the humid breeze. While the gated city centre was fairly pedestrian friendly, I also had to keep an eye open for scooters, tuk-tuks, and Songthaews (Chiang Mai’s iconic, bright-red shared taxis) hurtling down the narrow streets and alleys!
Tumblr media
As I explored Chiang Mai, I began to gain a better understanding of the multiple spiritual influences and religions that have been historically practiced in Northern Thailand. In addition to Buddhism, which is followed by the majority of the population, Animism - or spirit worship – was also evident throughout the streets of Chiang Mai. The most prevalent example is the ornate spirit homes found in front of houses and businesses. Raised on pillars, these colourful, dollhouse like homes are intended to provide a home for the guardian spirits of the land, so that the spirits do not come into the buildings and bother people. Daily offerings are made to the spirits, in the form of candles, flowers, incense, bowls of fruit. These spirit homes can be found around almost every corner, and are sometimes up on the roofs of buildings!
Tumblr media
Spirit Homes in Chiang Mai
I spent much of my day exploring the incredible Lanna temples in the historic centre of Chiang Mai – in particular Wat Phantao, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Phra Singh. The ornate architecture, sculptures and fluttering prayer flags surrounding these historic temples were completely mesmerizing. Many of the facades were gilded and decorated with intricate mosaic tiles. Giant golden and white stupas (large mounds or spires) were scattered throughout the temple grounds. Historically used for burials or holding relics, stupas (also called ‘chedis’ in Chiang Mai) are constructed in all shapes and sizes, and are used as landmarks and objects of worship. The inside of the prayer halls were no less impressive. Countless golden Buddha sculptures (and one replica of the famous Emerald Buddha) could be found on alters at the front of the halls, where bare-footed worshippers would kneel and give their tributes to Buddha. Each temple was slightly different, with its own set-up and architecture. At the larger temples, it was common to see monks, both young and old, walking between the different buildings, some of which were used for monastic and Buddhism education.

Wat Chedi Luang
Tumblr media
It was a truly incredible day, and hard to believe just how many Wats were scattered throughout the city. I wandered down larger streets and narrow alleys alike, following no planned route in order to get a sense of the historic city. Stopping occasionally along my way, I sampled various local cuisines – from drinking water from a young coconut that had been freshly cut open, to drinking Thai Iced Tea, a sweet, orange-coloured beverage made with condensed milk. I also made sure to try Khao Soi, a Lanna egg-noodle dish the region is famous for – made with tofu, coconut milk, shallots, pickled cabbage, chilli paste and lime. It was so good I made sure to have one bowl a day for the remainder of my time in Chiang Mai!
Tumblr media
Khao Soi
In the late afternoon, I headed back to my hostel to rest for a few hours, tired and happy for some air conditioning to balance out the tropical heat of the day. After a quick power nap, cold shower and change of clothes, I headed back out into the city as the evening fell. Chiang Mai was just as lively at night, and walking along the narrow streets into the city centre, I was able to see into the homes and shops along the roadside – dimly-lit garages with people doing scooter repairs, Thai massage parlours, food stalls, tourist bars, and family homes alike. As I walked towards the main centre, various hawkers and shopkeepers called out to me – offering everything from a traditional Thai Sak Yant tattoo, to a roadside table for dinner! I had timed my visit to Chiang Mai to include a weekend, as I had heard great things about the city’s iconic Saturday and Sunday Night Walking Street Markets. I made my way over to Wualai street, opposite Chiang Mai Gate, and encountered the biggest street market I had ever seen, packed as far as the eye could see with stalls selling everything from food, handicrafts, artwork, Thai Silks and cottons, silverware, wood carvings, jewellery, antiques, embroidery, and woven baskets – to name a few! The amount of people and the sheer scale of the market was somewhat overwhelming. I spent the next few hours meandering between the stalls and admiring the original Lanna goods for sale. As I was planning to return to the (even bigger!) Sunday market the following night, I didn’t buy anything, but made note of the products I would look for the following evening. After my full day exploring the city, I opted to head back to my hostel fairly early, as I would be getting up early the following morning to head into the Thai Countryside.

Sak yant “Sak” meaning “to tap or tattoo” and “yant” meaning “yantra.” It is magical tattoo that holds the blessing given by an ajarn as he chants during the whole process of using a steel rod to permanently etch the yantra under my skin. I was grateful that my Thai coteacher, P. Nilamai was so willing to take me to the home of Ajarn Keng to receive my sak yant. She had received hers from Ajarn Keng and he claims that he was the one who did Angelina Jolie’s. I sometimes find it hard to communicate with P. Nilamai despite the fact that she teaches the English subject to the students but in their native language. We have that language barrier sometimes but I was still lucky to have her there to assist in the process of telling the ajarn what I was asking for. I decided to try to keep things simple so I asked for the magical blessing of “belief & trust.” I needed to surrender and have full faith in the energy of the universe and my higher self. I understood that everything I was experiencing, even the negative, was meant to happen for me and my growth. I trust in the process. Ajarn Keng was only in town for two days before he would be traveling to China and then Singapore. I decided to return the next day with another offering of flowers, cigarettes, incense, a small yellow candle and a thousand Thai baht. This time I asked for the magical blessing of manifestation. The moment when he thought the tattoo was finished, he perks up and says “No...... Star.. Stars for power...” I immediately thought “Wow, this guy knows me 😏” Haha! What an honor it was to be in his presence for such a holy moment to meditate and receive magic. I am blessed.
