At 2.55 pm Sunday I got a message on one of my Whatsapp groups that the actor Sushant Singh Rajput has committed suicide. For the next 11 hours, my team and I worked non-stop. We put out 100s of news articles on our websites and social media pages combined. We were constantly getting updates and the copies were getting re-written and edited. It's a drill we follow. We do this every time. We did the same when we heard about Irrfan we did the same when the news of Rishi Ji took us by surprise. There are no Sundays or set holidays for us and no we aren't doing some great deed or making a difference by doing all this. This is our job. We chose this profession and now we are doing the best we can to be on the top. To make our name shine. And the same is being done by every other media house bringing you daily news, updates, and gossip. We all are trying to come first in this race. But no one is winning. Rather we are failing miserably.

I'm a part of the entertainment media. The section which brings you the daily gossip about film stars, who's dating who and who's cheating on who with whom. I'm that media which tells you the whereabouts of your favorite Bollywood celeb and brings you their daily gym looks. I'm also the media who leave a Saturday night outing with her friends and go back home in the middle of the night half tipsy opens her laptop and start filing about the tragic demise of Sridevi Ji. I and my team work round the clock to keep the entertainment feed going. We don't follow 9 to 5 job rules it doesn't exist for anyone in media. Instead, we work on Diwali and New Year nights to put out the best Party looks. We have set rules. We do not use anyone's death to our advantage. We don't use pictures of the dead or promote any indecent web-show on our site. We make calls, we get quotes from our sources, we go all in. We want you to know what happened and why. Sometimes our facts are on point, sometimes we make mistakes but we mean no harm and no disrespect. But this is just me talking about the bunch of people I know and I work with. So this is how things are for us. It's our job to generate content that is of interest. It's our bread and butter.

But when we see what other media houses are doing we feel only one emotion. Shame. Yes, we feel shameful because even though we are not like them but we are a part of the same system. We may not be that disrespectful but we surely are hurting sentiments of many. We have made things so difficult for each other that instead of finding a story worth covering we are now making stories up. We have made it a cut-throat affair. This is because of us that the pictures from someone's bedroom are reaching your screens. And I'm truly sorry for that.

Don't take me wrong I don't mean to offend anyone but I'm no saint. I have put out news pieces which I knew will get us eyeballs. But I know where to stop. We do make mistakes and try to do better next time. But what this industry is doing is beyond my understanding now.

When you are in media sometimes there are tough decisions to make. Sometimes the pressure is such that you give in. You know that if you won't do it then someone else will so we play by just one rule ' DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO TO SURVIVE'.

The whole idea is to move ahead from one another one way or the other, but we are not realizing what damage we are doing.

In today's world, we follow and preach what's called Yellow Journalism. It means presenting little or no legitimate well-researched news using eye-catching headlines, exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism for increased sales.

This kind of journalism/media is like a parasite. It slowly infiltrates your feeds, your television sets, then your mind and then it gets deeply rooted somewhere inside you.

And it's not just one section of media, it's all of us. And as much as I try to keep things to the point or be sensitive towards the news I'm still a part of it.

We are making news to sell now. We are pushing limits. Our understanding goes for a toss and what we put out there is just utter shit.

Media as an industry, as a whole need to stand together and understand the dos and don'ts. We need to understand the meaning of real journalism once again.

What happened with Sridevi Ji's pictures, what happened with Rishi Ji's hospital videos, and what happened today with #SushantSinghRajput's pictures is shameful and disrespectful to whole another level.

Trust me when I say this that there are a lot of us who are trying to put out meaningful content in any way that's possible and we know we are not what you expected. But we are trying.

Even though we didn't use those images and may have tried to be more sensitive towards the news, but we do own an apology. It's our fault as an industry and we need to take responsibility.🙏
