Good People Doing Good Things -- Aidan Ahmed
I always love it when I find young people who are making the world a little bit better place … they are an inspiration to us all, I think.  Meet Aidan Ahmed … In 2020 at the start of the pandemic, Aidan Ahmed was only 11 years old.  His family lived in the San Francisco bay area and had begun an initiative to provide sleeping bags and other essentials to homeless people in the area.  On one such…

If you don't know this already, please try and internalize it: the idea that people join the US military primarily because they are young people at a disadvantage in life coerced into believing it is the most accessible path to upward mobility is not true.
if you're parroting this talking point, you are doing propaganda for the US military and you just need to stop saying it. here's an article from the Military Times that breaks the finding of various studies like this one from 2020 and this one from 2018 that analyze motivations for joining the military and popular conceptions of motivations for joining the military. Here's a pretty important excerpt:
Further, they hypothesized that some of this possible misconception about poorer Americans joining the military was a geographical issue. While the Defense Department tracks the zip codes of recruits ― and historically, many of them come from more rural areas in the southeast ― it doesn’t track their incomes or their parents’ incomes, which leads to assumptions that the poorer their communities, the poorer the recruits. [...] Using Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 1997 to 2008, they found that the services have recruited primarily from the middle class, America’s largest socio-economic demographic. “We show that recent recruits tend to have higher than average socioeconomic background: they disproportionally come from the middle of the family income, family wealth, and cognitive skill distributions, with both tails under-represented,” they found.
Here's from the army times:
Surveyed troops said these were the top five reasons for staying in the Army. The percentages indicate how many troops felt the factors were “extremely important” to them:
- Opportunity to serve my country — 53.5% - How well my retirement pay or benefits will meet my future needs — 45.1% - Opportunities to lead or train soldiers — 43.5% - My sense of purpose — 38.1% -How well my pay or benefits meet my present needs — 37%
Also mentioned in other sources but here from the NY times in 2020 as well, army enlistment is becoming increasingly skewed towards being the children of people who have previously served.
The main predictors are not based on class or race. Army data show service spread mostly evenly through middle-class and “downscale” groups. Youth unemployment turns out not to be the prime factor.
'Joining the army to lift yourself out of poverty' is not the reality for military service, it is the narrative used by the military in it's marketing and recruitment. if you go around repeating it i hope for your sake you're at least on their payroll! if you're going to bootlick don't do it for free!

I think its genuinely fascinating how Biden has somehow become the bad vibes sin eater for the party. I'm seeing people who were doing the whole "voting doesn't matter both old men are the same" pivot hard into voting as harm reduction. The anti voting rhetoric has COMPLETELY lost The Youths on tiktok. People suddenly remember the good things the Biden administration has done but don't associate Harris with any of the things they didn't like. In my swing state volunteers are signing up in droves. People feel ENERGIZED, the vibe shift pre and post Biden dropping from the race has just been insane
Y'know, that is a... good way of putting it. It's also why I'm quite sure that Biden has probably been planning it for a while. I don't think he was intending to step down, and didn't want to be forced out at the drop of a hat, but after he realized that the circus was never going to stop until he did, he did the honorable fall-on-his-own-sword thing and definitely, DEFINITELY spent some time choreographing this behind the scenes. Because while the roll-out has been very smooth, it could just as easily (as many of us were expecting) have been a total disaster, and that doesn't happen without SOME planning. It's also entirely possible that the campaign staff flipped from Biden to Harris are superhuman, to come up with a massive online roll-out, new branding, new signs (they had plenty of 'em in Wisconsin yesterday), new everything, but I'm guessing it's a combination of both. Biden has spent his entire political career being underestimated, and after we literally made a meme out of Dark Brandon juking the Republicans out of their shoes, we should definitely give credit where credit is due in how masterfully he pulled it off.
Because we have had eight years defined by the central question of Whether The President Is a God King Who Should Serve For Life (the MAGAts obviously think yes), the sheer idea of a president willingly giving up his power BEFORE he had to is also novel and admirable. It's sad that this is the case, but so be it. The Republicans also got a heaping helping of Be Careful What You Wish For that was undoubtedly brilliant; they've been yelling for years that Biden is old and frail and can't serve and should step down. Biden went "lol okay" and gave it to them, and now they're fucked.
Aside from that, on the most basic level, it's far, far easier to see the actual difference in the parties with Harris as the nominee, just because it shows that one party is willing to make progress and reflect the new demographic reality and social mores of America, and the other one is not. Now to be clear, Biden deserves an incredible amount of credit for coming out of retirement (he was ALREADY 77 years old when he became president and had had decades of a long and respected career in public service behind him) to fight, beat Trump, and deliver an incredibly successful presidency. He held the line against authoritarianism at home and abroad, he rescued the trashed American economy and managed a world-leading recovery from Covid, he stood up for democracy, he spent four years filling the benches with liberal judges to reverse even some of the Trump/McConnell hack job, he finally passed comprehensive infrastructure investment and the Green New Deal under the name of the Inflation Reduction Act -- and so on. Many of these priorities had been languishing for decades or were completely trashed under Trump, and he could not have done so much in just 4 years without all that age, skill, and experience. Hence why all the Ageism!!! was (aside from being a Republican/media smear job) dumb. He's able to do the job because he has had decades to study. Turns out that makes you actually pretty damn good at it.
Yes, Biden could not do as much as he wanted or originally planned, had to deal with MAGA Republicans and Joe Manchin/Kyrsten Sinema sabotaging him the whole time (lololol Manchin, possible possessor of the World's Biggest Ego and with Trump around that's saying something, popping out of obscurity to self-righteously announce he would not be willing to be Kamala's VP. YEAH ASSHOLE. LITERALLY NOBODY ASKED YOU. NOBODY WHATSOEVER. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS AT LEAST WE WILL SOON NO LONGER HAVE MANCHIN IN THE SENATE). And yes, Biden made some serious mistakes of his own, because he IS from an older generation and a different style of doing politics/different beliefs that no longer resonate with the younger segments of the electorate. But this old white Catholic guy at the age of almost 80 still managed to be the most progressive president ever, coming in at a moment of incredible domestic and international crisis and getting us safely to the other side, and all cynicism, criticizing, and caveating aside, he deserves an incredible amount of credit for that. I mean that absolutely, and I am very grateful.
As I said, willingly relinquishing that power takes guts, and when Biden saw the writing on the wall that he had to sacrifice himself, he took his time, he didn't jump too early, and he didn't jump too late. On the most basic level, it becomes a hell of a lot easier to make the "both parties are not the same" argument when one is running a (comparatively) young brown woman and the other is still running their loathed felonious old demented orange traitor. Most Americans are not plugged into policy minutiae and details. They look at Biden-Trump, they see two old white guys. When you take one of those old white guys away (who goes in a self-sacrificially heroic manner and in sharp contrast with the coup-happy fascist) and put Kamala Harris in there instead, it generates an obvious jolt. People can see for themselves that there is a real difference that doesn't rely on closely reading news and tracking complex policy, because as noted, most Americans simply don't. The brown first-generation American daughter of brown immigrants is a quantifiably different story from "old white guy career politician," which for better or worse is how Biden was seen, especially the old part. We needed that establishment expertise to beat Trump in 2020; I still think Biden is the only one who could have done it, and as noted, we owe him a great debt for doing so.
However.... 2024 is not 2020, and it is not 2016. There has been this HUGE and unbelievable swing to Kamala because she represents the antithesis of what the last eight years of Trump-induced anger, fear, panic, chaos, and hatred has stirred up. That's why people are so ready to rally around her, just as they were (I daresay) around Obama in 2008, after the exhaustion, chaos, war, and mounting economic misery of Bush. Trump has been out of office for the last four years, but his shadow over the American political landscape has been omnipresent. Now people know that we finally have a real chance at getting rid of him forever, and just as Biden was uniquely positioned to capitalize on that in 2020, so Harris is now. Which is why, however tough it will be, she has a real shot at winning. I can guarantee the Republicans know that, and are shit scared. Because the Black Lady Army of Democracy has indeed arrived in force to Get This Shit Done and I don't know about you, but I found that incalculably comforting:
Yikes! All lined up for Kamala pic.twitter.com/Dt4OCDp7WX
— Alex Cole (@acnewsitics) July 24, 2024
This, at the most basic level, is what scares fascists the most, it's exactly what we need now, and what Harris is uniquely positioned to mobilize, along with her gangbusters appeal to young voters:
This is the energy we need. This is what Biden saw and planned for and which he launched us into, and where all that experience and age paid off. This is why people, even people otherwise disengaged, disillusioned, or checked out of the tedious and mind-numbering drudgery and depression of American politics, are responding to it. Because it's easy to understand, it offers hope, and it tells a very simple story that is nonetheless long overdue:
Tumblr media
Thanks so much, Joe. Go absolutely waste that orange fucker, Kamala. We got your back.

Why was the U.S. government quietly investigating IRFF and Massimo Trombin?
Tumblr media
The International Relief Friendship Foundation (IRFF) was a Moonie-associated relief-oriented NGO. Massimo Trombin was European IRFF's sub-director and Italy IRFF’s director in 1998, often working with and alongside another Moonie NGO, Religious Youth Service (RYS), spending much of his time planning and working at 4 West 43rd St.
Massimo is an Italian national who, along with many other WANGO/IRFF/RYS leaders, joined the Hyun Jin / Preston schism, working now with the Global Peace Foundation.
Why was the government quietly investigating IRFF and Massimo Trombin in 1998?

"Starting this month [June 2024], thousands of young people will begin doing climate-related work around the West as part of a new service-based federal jobs program, the American Climate Corps, or ACC. The jobs they do will vary, from wildland firefighters and “lawn busters” to urban farm fellows and traditional ecological knowledge stewards. Some will work on food security or energy conservation in cities, while others will tackle invasive species and stream restoration on public land.
The Climate Corps was modeled on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps, with the goal of eventually creating tens of thousands of jobs while simultaneously addressing the impacts of climate change.
Applications were released on Earth Day, and Maggie Thomas, President Joe Biden’s special assistant on climate, told High Country News that the program’s website has already had hundreds of thousands of views. Since its launch, nearly 250 jobs across the West have been posted, accounting for more than half of all the listed ACC positions.
“Obviously, the West is facing tremendous impacts of climate change,” Thomas said. “It’s changing faster than many other parts of the country. If you look at wildfire, if you look at extreme heat, there are so many impacts. I think that there’s a huge role for the American Climate Corps to be tackling those crises.”
Most of the current positions are staffed through state or nonprofit entities, such as the Montana Conservation Corps or Great Basin Institute, many of which work in partnership with federal agencies that manage public lands across the West. In New Mexico, for example, members of Conservation Legacy’s Ecological Monitoring Crew will help the Bureau of Land Management collect soil and vegetation data. In Oregon, young people will join the U.S. Department of Agriculture, working in firefighting, fuel reduction and timber management in national forests.
New jobs are being added regularly. Deadlines for summer positions have largely passed, but new postings for hundreds more positions are due later this year or on a rolling basis, such as the Working Lands Program, which is focused on “climate-smart agriculture.”  ...
On the ACC website, applicants can sort jobs by state, work environment and focus area, such as “Indigenous knowledge reclamation” or “food waste reduction.” Job descriptions include an hourly pay equivalent — some corps jobs pay weekly or term-based stipends instead of an hourly wage — and benefits. The site is fairly user-friendly, in part owing to suggestions made by the young people who participated in the ACC listening sessions earlier this year...
The sessions helped determine other priorities as well, Thomas said, including creating good-paying jobs that could lead to long-term careers, as well as alignment with the president’s Justice40 initiative, which mandates that at least 40% of federal climate funds must go to marginalized communities that are disproportionately impacted by climate change and pollution.
High Country News found that 30% of jobs listed across the West have explicit justice and equity language, from affordable housing in low-income communities to Indigenous knowledge and cultural reclamation for Native youth...
While the administration aims for all positions to pay at least $15 an hour, the lowest-paid position in the West is currently listed at $11 an hour. Benefits also vary widely, though most include an education benefit, and, in some cases, health care, child care and housing.
All corps members will have access to pre-apprenticeship curriculum through the North America’s Building Trades Union. Matthew Mayers, director of the Green Workers Alliance, called this an important step for young people who want to pursue union jobs in renewable energy. Some members will also be eligible for the federal pathways program, which was recently expanded to increase opportunities for permanent positions in the federal government...
“To think that there will be young people in every community across the country working on climate solutions and really being equipped with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce of the future,” Thomas said, “to me, that is going to be an incredible thing to see.”"
-via High Country News, June 6, 2024
--
Note: You can browse Climate Corps job postings here, on the Climate Corps website. There are currently 314 jobs posted at time of writing!
Also, it says the goal is to pay at least $15 an hour for all jobs (not 100% meeting that goal rn), but lots of postings pay higher than that, including some over $20/hour!!

I’m a queer minor with an unsupportive Republican family and I feel so fucking helpless about the election. What can I do or at least how can I stay safe?
listen to me. i am taking your face in my hands. i am looking into your eyes. listen. your second question is the right one. your safety is your priority. have you ever been on a plane? and they do the little safety routine? and when the masks fall down, they say, "put your own oxygen mask on before helping others?"
as a queer kid, this is a put your own mask on before helping others situation.
there are things you can do to get involved but first and foremost, you gotta be safe. if that means you don't come out and you don't talk about politics and you don't get involved in activism until you can be independent, that's what it means. i know it sucks to hear. it really sucks saying it, tbh. i want you to be big and out and loud and proud, and i never want you to have to make yourself small, but more than anything i want you to be safe.
so everything i'm about to say is with this caveat. safety first. your own mask before helping others.
here's a link to the lgbt national youth talkline. this service won't call outside agencies (like 911) on your behalf, unless you're making a credible threat to someone else.
the Trevor Project also has a hotline and chat services. they do call outside agencies on your behalf to report imminent harm to yourself or others as well as reporting child abuse. i'm not saying one is better than the other. i just want you to know what each service does.
the Trevor Project also has trevorspace, which i guess is like social media for lgbt youth? i am not a youth so i didn't sign up to check it out but it could be a good place to find folks to talk and connect with. connections are so good.
here's some things you can do. i tried to include a bunch of things with different amounts of involvement so you can pick your safety level.
read. read so much. read about people who are like you and who are not like you. read fiction that celebrates queer joy and read nonfiction books about antiracism and intersectionality and the history of queer people in the US. do you know who has a cool amount of information on queer history in the US? the national park service. watch queer movies, even (especially, tbh) old ~problematic stuff, look up what people say about it now. read through the articles on decolonizepalestine.com. watch interviews about Black joy. know your rights. read banned books. if you can't do, learn. read. just because it's happening inside your head doesn't mean it's real work.
check out scarleteen, which is a fantastic resource for queer sex ed and relationship information. a lot of their articles are older now, but still 100% great reads.
watch what your family is watching - debates, news stories, whatever - and ask yourself how would i respond to that? look up how to respond to that. you can use this time to start learning how to dissect political speech and how to respond to it. both sides do this! read news from both sides and see how it compares.
make your daily 5 calls. they give you scripts and everything. if you don't want to talk to a real human person, calling in the evening will usually get you a voicemail. talking on the phone is a hugely important social skill - if you don't have it, the 5 calls are a great way to start and to start addressing your discomfort with phones.
20 states allow 17-year-olds to vote in the primaries.
Pre-register to vote if you're eligible.
Vote Forward puts on a letter writing campaign you can participate in.
NextGen America has in-person volunteer opportunities in 8 states, and virtual opportunities globally. Although they target voters 18-35, volunteers can be any age. (hey adults - you listening?)
here's even more information on phone or text banking! for most of these, you don't have to be 18.
Organize a voter registration drive at your high school. the Civics Center has a free, one-hour online workshop that will walk you through how to host a drive and they'll even send you swag for it. check out their "for students" tab - they have sharable graphics, workshops, lots of stuff.
in some states, people under 18 can sign up to be poll workers. (hey adults - we can do this too)
CIRCLE is a civic engagement center that focuses on getting youth out to vote, but also educating folks. check their website out. listen. politics are so boring like, 99.9% of the time. the more you know about how it works, the more effective you can be when you want to get involved.
look up your local political body, find out when they meet. attend the meetings. in my county we have a board of commissioners that meet once a month, and a couple of committees as well. i don't go every time but now that i can log into the meetings via Zoom, I do about every other month or so. did you see that video of violet affleck speaking at the LA board of supervisors meeting? that could be you, babe.
so there's a lot you can do actually! here's some more stuff you can do!!
know, with 100% certainty, in your heart of hearts, that there are so many people who want you to be out and proud and loud and yourself. and there are so many people who are fighting for you to be able to do that. there are so many adults, queer and non-queer, rooting for you, standing up for you, putting ourselves between you and a future where you have to keep making yourself small. and you will get older and i know it's trite but THINGS REALLY DO GET BETTER, and someday you will be the queer adult on this side of the screen protecting kids like you. you gotta keep on keeping on and keeping yourself safe so you can do that someday.
log off. LOG OFF. doomscrolling is a form of self-harm. deliberately seeking out endless articles and tiktoks and whatever about news and information that will upset you is not activism, babe! it's harm! you aren't helping anyone by being hurt. there's a difference between being informed and hurting yourself. find the line. hold yourself to it.
stop using chat gpt. it's terrible. forget you ever knew about it. that's not related to activism its just like, general health, and also climate change. while i'm here, switch to firefox and duckduckgo.
go outside. it turns out touching grass is actually important for our mental health. go find some.
pick up a hobby that does something with your hands, if you're able to. i cross-stitch and play piano (badly). pick up drawing. cooking. embroidery. underwater basket weaving. it's important to find something that shows you what YOU can do with YOUR two hands. you can do so much.
find your people. online, in person. find your people. when i got this ask, i - not a parent - threw it to my people and they helped me find some resources. we're doing this together.
this is kind of silly but i love doing it. find the marriage license announcements in your county or township or whatever and look for gay people. you'll be guessing by names, so watch out - we love trans people who have and haven't made the legal name change! - but GOD. i've looked at the marriage license announcements literally every two weeks (which is how often they're published in my county) since Obergefell v Hodges 9 years ago, which is when we got gay marriage in my state, and it's so fucking healing. in the last 9 years, i have seen hundreds of gay people make this announcement. every two weeks, there are four or five gay couples in my community out of maybe 15, 20 (i live in a pretty small county). look up why marriage rights have mattered so much to our community. these marriage license announcements are just such a small, bright spot of joy and seeing the names - real people! in my real community! - cradles my heart. find what cradles your heart.
this has gotten long enough so i'm going to set it free. i'm sure there will be people in the notes adding things. for you parents out there, leave your love in the comments. for the rest of us extremely cool and suave adults, pick something off the list and volunteer too, and look at this anon and think yes, this is why we do it. kids like us who are kids now, who will be us later. for you Youth out there, put your oxygen mask on first and then help others.
i love you.
it gets better.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week. #5
Feb 9-16 2024
The Department of Education released the first draft for a wide ranging student loan forgiveness plan. After Biden's first attempt at student debt forgiveness was struck down at the Supreme Court in 2023, this new plan is an attempt to replace it with something that will hold up in court. The plan hopes to forgive debt for anyone facing "financial hardship" which has been as broadly defined as possible. Another part of the plan hopes to eliminate $10-20,000 in interest from all student loans, as well as a wide ranging public Information push to inform people of other forgiveness programs they qualify for but don't know about.
The House passed 1.2 Billion Dollars to combat human trafficking, including $175 million in housing assistance to human trafficking victims
The Department of Transportation announced $970 Million for improvements at 114 airports across 44 states and 3 territories. They include $40 million to O'Hare International in Chicago to improve passenger experience by reconfiguring TSA and baggage claims, and installing ADA compliant bathrooms(!). The loans will also go to connecting airports to mass transit, boosted sustainability, installing solar and wind power, and expanding service to under served committees around the country.
Medicare & Medicaid released new guidelines to allow people to pay out of pocket prescription drug coats in monthly installments rather than as a lump sum. This together with capping the price of certain drugs and penalties for drug companies that rise prices over inflation is expected to save the public millions on drug coasts and assure people don't pass on a prescription because they can't pay upfront
The EPA announced its adding 150 more communities to its Closing America's Wastewater Access Gap Community Initiative. 2.2 Million Americans do not have basic running water and indoor plumbing. Broken and unreliable wastewater infrastructure exposed many of those to dangerous raw sewage. These Americans live primarily in poor and rural communities, many predominantly Black communities in the south as well as those on tribal lands. The program is aiming to close the wastewater gap and insure all Americans have access to reliable clear water.
The White House announced deferred action for Palestinians in the US. This means any Palestinian living in the United States, no mater their legal status, can not be deported for any reason for the next 18 months.
The Department of Energy announced $60 million in investment into clean geothermal energy. The plan will hopefully lead to a 90% decrease in the coasts of geothermal. DOE estimates hold that geothermal might be able to power the hopes of 65 million Americans by 2050 making it a key step in the Biden administration plan for a carbon-free grid by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
The EPA launched $83 million to help improve air quality monitoring across America. With updated equipment local agencies will be better able to report on air quality, give more localized reports of bad air quality and the country will be better equipped to start mitigating the problem
The Department of Energy announced $63 million in investments in domestic heat-pump manufacturing. Studies have shown that heat-pumps reduce green house gases by 50% over the most efficient condensing gas boilers, as technology improves this could rise to 75% by 2030. Heat pump water heaters meanwhile are 2 to 3 times as energy efficient as conventional electric water heaters.
HHS awarded $5.1 million to organizations working with LGBTQI+ Youth and their Families. The programs focus on preventing homelessness, fighting depression and suicide, drug use and HIV prevention and treatment, as well as  family counseling and support interventions tailored for LGBTQI+ families.
The House passed two bills in support of the oppressed Uyghur minority in China. The "No Dollars To Uyghur Forced Labor" Act would prohibit the US government from spending any money on projects that source materials from Xinjiang. The Uyghur Policy Act would create a permanent post at the State Department to coordinate policy on Uyghur Issues, much like the special ambassador on antisemitism.

*Spoilers in the linked article.*
I caught an early screening last night. It wasn’t well attended. The film is more like a Blumhouse horror movie on steroids than anything you may have conceived ahead of time. It is very dark, gritty, and oppressive. It reminds me of of seeing Platoon and leaving the theater tired as if I had been in the battle.
The film doesn’t really play off of current politics but rather fictional plot lines so as not to offend the current right and left wings in America. Despite this it is an intensely realistic war film and edge of your seat thriller. The main characters are war correspondents and their personal detachment from the frightening scenes of violence, near indifference in some scenes, becomes a subplot.
Civil War depicts the chaos, fear, violence, deprivation, depravity, and sheer terror one can only experience by having been in a war zone. Nick Offerman, as the President, is only in a few brief scenes and though the film stays away from real life connections his character is in his “third term” and has disbanded the FBI. Clearly this is Trumpian but subtle enough to fly over the heads of MAGAts. Rogue militia men, not much different than we see in Red States, armed with AR-15’s are present throughout the film and generate tension and sheer terror at some points. The acts of graphically realistic barbarity are hard to process.
The film is a cautionary tale of an America plunged into an utterly chaotic and brutal Civil War where no prisoners are taken, literally on the screen. There are no good guys or bad guys and very little context or background is given. The closing photo on screen during the end credits speaks volumes. This is not just what is highly likely to happen if the right-wing doesn’t get their way but what the cost will be to society. Chaos, disruption, breakdown in the supply chain, the resulting lack of food and fuel, breakdown of the power grid, collapse of law and order, domestic terrorism, anarchy, devaluation of currency, humanitarian crises, destruction of infrastructure, and a constant state of fear.
Ok, begin rant here:
Sadly about a third of the country wants this to happen and has not only been preparing for it but actually trying to provoke it. In the eighties and nineties we saw hopeless young marginalized people in rural join gangs and be willing to toss their lives away because their situation was near hopeless. They expected to die young and didn’t care if they did or what harm they caused along the way. They lacked educational opportunities or any meaningful employment. Now in the two thousands we see rural southern and western white youth with the same mindset. Red state Republican governance and corporate plundering has left them poorly educated with no chance at socio-economic advancement. The difference between the two groups being that the poor rural whites have been brainwashed into supporting their oppressors. Further they are armed with military assault rifles and own a plethora of combat tactical gear.
This stems in part from the unholy alliance of the NRA and the GOP (Republicans). However more to the point it stems from the desensitization that two decades of forever wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have caused. This was courtesy of grifter war criminals Bush/Cheney. Our streets are now flooded with hundreds of thousands of traumatized, disillusioned, and disgruntled veterans and their tales fascinate MAGAs to the point where they form militias. The Republicans, who vote against veterans aid consistently, have claimed the military and falsely profess admiration for it with empty lip service. Poor and poorly educated Republicans now worship the military like they are warriors on the Klingon home world. Nothing against active or retired military just the Republican pretenders. While Joe MAGA himself doesn’t serve, he feels the need to play pretend soldier and would in a heartbeat turn his life inside out and our nation inside out for a sense of belonging, ie the MAGA cult mentality. They want that post apocalyptic gun slinger world where they believe life is simple as long as you are carrying a gun. They have been conditioned not to think things through and see no other escape from a society that has become too complicated for them to navigate.
That’s the crux of my story, rural Republicans feel hopeless and have been radicalized by demagogues to the point they will wage war on the rest of the country. Republican politicians and their corporate/oligarch masters want to gorge themselves off of a civil war they believe they will win. See the movie Civil War and see what the ordinary MAGAt is hoping to do to the rest of us.
The movie, although brutal and not for the faint of heart, is a cautionary tale that we need to be aware of.

Royal Navy - Alessia Russo x Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Royal Navy!R was childhood friends with Less and things ended sort of poorly between them, they meet again. years later.
A/N: Alright so I don't know a lot about the Royal Navy but I do know a lot about the US Navy so everything in here is a combination of research and filling in the blanks with American military knowledge.
Sometimes, life doesn’t give you everything you want.
Correction, most of the time life doesn’t give you anything you want. This explains the conversation that you’re currently having while sitting in your girlfriend’s room.
“I just don’t know why you would want to volunteer to join the army,” she says, flopping back onto her bed.
“I’m joining the Navy, Less,” you tell her for what must be the one-thousandth time. “Besides, there's not anything for you to understand. I don’t understand why you're going to school in America but I’m not trying to stop you.”
“I’m going to play football and learn,” Alessia says, “Not signing up to get myself killed.”
“Yea, well, we all can’t be the next Kelly Smith, can we?”
“Don’t get smart with me Y/N, I don’t want to argue with you,” she says, finally sitting up to look at you.
“But you do, because if you didn’t we’d be making out not having this conversation the day before I leave for Dartmouth,” you respond, getting up from your seat at her desk, “I won’t be able to use my mobile so often I’ll  write you but don’t bother answering if you’re gonna keep at it like this.”
With that, you walk out of Alessia’s room and as a result her life.
You do hear her calling after you but you know she hasn’t changed her mind so you don’t bother turning around.
That was over 5 years ago and while you did keep your promise of writing and calling her; after your first three letters received no response, you gave up.
That doesn’t mean that you stopped cheering her on, you’ve seen all her major moments, no matter how far away you were.
Over the summer, you along with practically every other sailor on your ship watched as she along with the rest of the Lionesses conquered Europe.
And now, you’re standing on the touchline at Kingsmeadow in your dress uniform for some surprise your sister planned with Chelsea.
But if you had known they scheduled it for the weekend the Blues welcome United, you probably would’ve waited a little longer to take some leave time.
Anything would be better than having Alessia attempt to burn holes in you with only her eyes as you carry the ball out for the coin toss.
You can’t tell if she recognizes you with your hair cut so short and your body so stiff but when you hear the PA ask everyone to turn their attention to you, you know that she’ll figure it out soon if she hasn’t already.
“Everyone please join us in a round of applause,” the voice says over the speakers, “as we welcome back former Chelsea youth player, Lieutenant Commander in His Majesty’s Royal Navy, Y/N Y/L/N. Thank you for your service.”
You allow yourself to smile slightly as Emma Hayes hands you a Chelsea shirt with your name on it before a stadium hand comes to lead you to your seat.
The match is good and you enjoy it as much as you can with strangers coming up to you every two minutes.
When it ends, 2-1 Chelsea, you make your back pitchside having agreed to speak with the players in the small window of time Hayes and Skinner have managed to get them to give up.
When you're led to a back room you’re shocked to see both teams there intermingled but you quickly remember that women's football has always been much more cordial than the men’s game.
After another quick introduction from the assistant who led you there, you stand alone in front of the two teams.
Hello,” you say, standing pretty stiffly with your hands clutching your cover behind your back. “I’m not going to introduce myself again but now seems like a good time to mention that since my dad is from Newburn, I’m a Newcastle fan.”
That gets a few scattered laughs that help to break some of the tension and ease your nerves.
“I’m supposed to be talking to you about leadership, team building, and morale but I watched the game and I can definitely say that neither team needs to hear from someone whose idea of team building is sticking people in the middle of the ocean for months at a time and seeing who can get passed their problems long enough to survive,” you say plainly, not bothering to hide your disinterest for the situation. “So I figured you can just ask me questions until they let us leave.”
Murmurs of agreement go through the group so you press on, alternating between teams to ensure you’re being fair.
Most of the questions are the normal ones you get when people find out you're in the Navy. So you explain what it means to be both a Lieutenant Commander and a Surface Warfare Officer.
There are a couple of shocked faces when you tell them that you’re trained to operate all the heavy artillery on the ships and a couple of faces that fill you with more than a bit of concern because of how glee-filled they are.
When you tell them that you joined the Navy because of family tradition you can see Alessia roll her eyes and whisper something to Toone but you divert your attention to Millie Bright, who you recognize from the time you spent training with the full team.
And based on her question it seems like she recognizes you too.
“You made some appearances with the full team, why’d you choose the Navy over football,” she asks.
Laughing a little you answer her, “I played 30 minutes in the Conti Cup and was in Hayes’ office the next day quitting. That was literally the worst half hour of my life and I almost drowned in the sinking ship exercise.”
It’s then that you notice Alessia put her hand up to ask a question and considering you want nothing more than to not have to interact with her, you ignore it getting through a few others before you notice Ella with her hand up as well.
So you make the mistake of calling on her.
“Are you ever going to let Less ask a question,” she says with an unbelievable amount of sass.
“I suppose I have to now,” you say, “Crack on, Russo.”
Alessia doesn’t take this well because she glares at you and asks in the coldest voice you’ve ever heard from her, “How’s your sister?”
Never one to be outdone when it comes to being petty you respond in kind.
“She’s fine. Your family?”
It's your words that seem to spark a realization in some of the players’ faces that the two of you know each other but before any of them have a chance to say anything the same assistant from earlier comes to tell you that you’ve completed your time agreement.
For your part, you can’t get out of the building fast enough, barely stopping by the manager's office to tell Emma bye.
Getting to your car, you rush home probably breaking a few minor traffic laws in your haste.
When you do get home, you rush past your sister, Sarah, and her husband straight to your room, where you make quick work of changing into comfy clothes so that you can hide away for the foreseeable future.
You manage to go a full two days before your sister gets sick of your bullshit and barges in opening the blinds to let light into your cave of despair.
“Alright, it’s time to get up,” she says, pulling the blankets from on top of your head.
“Fuck off,” you say, turning away from her.
“I won’t," she replies, "You’ve been locked away in here, not eating, for days. All because you had to see the girl who broke your heart at 17. Grow up.”
Rolling back over you glare at her harshly but she continues speaking before you get the chance to tell her to go away again.
“Don’t make that face at me, it won’t work,” Sarah says, plainly, “Here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to take a shower and then when you’re done, you’ll come eat lunch before going to walk Magpie.”
Her tone leaves no room for argument and if we’re being honest, you’ve always been appropriately cautious of pissing her off. She did practically raise you after all.
So you did what she asked.
You showered, you ate with her and her goofball husband, and now you're sitting at the park with her idiot dog that is named after a bird.
“Oi, Magpie,” you call out, getting the dog’s attention, “Stop trying to eat that rock you berk, it’s bigger than you are.”
Somewhere to your left, you hear a familiar burst of laughter that has you panicking more than a little bit.
You do your best to ignore it, hoping that she would choose any of the other benches to go sit on. But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for you as Alessia takes a seat right next to you, her dad’s dog coming to rest at her feet.
“Hey,” you say to her, not wanting to be rude before you turn your attention to the dog, “Sup Rocco, getting up there in age, aren’t you old boy?”
Alessia laughs again and you feel your heart skip a beat and a fluttering feeling begins in your stomach.
The two of you sit in relative silence for a while, the only words spoken are from you, usually a shout at your sister’s idiot dog.
You get so used to the silence that you almost miss it when she starts speaking.
“I owe you an apology for the way I treated you at the game,” Alessia begins, “It wasn’t fair of me to treat you like that, especially in front of so many people. -So, I’m sorry I did that.”
You’re not sure what you were expecting her to say but it definitely wasn’t that, so it takes you a moment before you respond.
“I can’t accept your apology,” you tell her after you finish processing. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see her shocked reaction so you continue before she can spiral too far. “Mostly because I was definitely a bigger dick than you were that day. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have acted that way, not in front of your team.”
You can see a small smile tug at her lips and you grin at her in response.
“We were both pretty big idiots, huh,” she says.
“Proper bellends,” you respond, “You’d think we would’ve done some growing up I guess not.”
A comfortable silence falls over the two of you and you let it stay for a few moments before you speak again.
“I think if we had been better at communicating, we probably would’ve been back on speaking terms at least four years ago,” you tell her seriously albeit with a joking tone.
“Are we?”
“Are we what?”
“Back on speaking terms,” Alessia clarifies.
“Obviously,” you say, “I don’t watch Magpie try to eat all the inedible things in sight with just anybody.”
The smile that had been threatening to break out on Alessia’s face is out in full force now and you can feel the fluttery sensation in your gut get stronger.
With that seemingly settled, the two of you fall into a pattern of conversation that is both familiar yet different.
In the past, most of your conversations centered around school, football, and making weekend plans. Now, it’s more of a catch up session but the vibes are the same.
It's perfect.
You don’t know how long you sit there but you’re eventually interrupted by the sound of both of your phones going off.
Your’s a call from Sarah telling you to bring her dog back and her’s a reminder from her dad about family dinner.
You stand up ready to try and catch Magpie and go when Alessia stops you.
“Y/N,” she begins, “Do you know where you’ll be stationed once your vacation ends?”
“Headed back to Dartmouth for five months to train the next batch of SWOs,” you tell her, “Then probably gonna be on shore duty for a while so might end up in command of a URNU. Depends.”
“On what?”
“Lots of things but mostly where the open postings are,” you explain.
“Two more questions but one relies on your answer to the other.”
“Shoot.”
“Will you be able to make and receive phone calls while at Dartmouth this time around,” she asks with a slight blush.
“I’ll be in charge so I can do what I want.”
“So would you be opposed to giving me your number so I can call you?”
Unable to resist teasing her a little bit, you let a coy grin spread across your face.
“Alessia Russo, are you trying to get back in my pants,” you ask her.
You watch as the blush on her deepens and she begins to sputter trying to defend herself.
You laugh a little and continue, “I mean it’s fine if you are but I’d prefer to know so that I don’t fuck it up like I did last time.”
“Y/N/N,” she says, still blushing and stuttering.
“My number is the same,” you say, taking pity on her, “so you better call me.”
“You’re an asshole.”
“I am but now I’m an asshole that you’ve got to call.”
“It’d take the entire Royal Navy to stop me.”

Good People Doing Good Things -- Young Ones
Today is Wednesday, so it must be ‘good people’ day!  I think that with everything in the news these days, we all need these good people posts more than ever to help us remember that not everyone is greedy or cruel, that there really are people out there doing their best for humanity.  Today, I want to focus on three young people who saw a problem and took the initiative to do something to try to…

Trump has been complimentary of Miller’s performance during his administration and suggested that, if there is a second term, hemight reprise his role as defense secretary, a powerful Cabinet post with sway over Pentagon policy. And though the former president has not weighed in onthis Heritage strategy document, he did embrace many of the organization’s proposals at the outset of his first term. In an interview, Miller said a national service requirement should be “strongly considered.” He described the concept as a common “rite of passage,” one that would create a sense of “shared sacrifice” among America’s youth. [...] On Tuesday, after publication of this report, Trump wrote on social media that the idea he would call for mandatory military service was “ridiculous” and attacked The Washington Post for what he said was a “failed attempt to damage me with the Voters.”
Trump recognizes that "mandatory college where they also teach you to shoot guns" is not going to be either appealing to his voters or end well for him.

The UK government has put in place an emergency ban of puberty blockers to any person under the age of 18 while under the conservative government. A recent statement by the new Labour Secretary of Health Wes Streeting indicates transphobic intentions and views; regretting saying that "trans women are women" and has displayed intent to extend the current emergency ban of puberty blockers to minors past September 3rd 2024, and enforce the ban permanently.
People under the age of 18 cannot legally receive puberty blockers under private healthcare services and if they want to receive puberty blockers from public healthcare (the NHS) they will need to do so in a clinical trial environment. The NHS notoriously takes a VERY long time to get things done due to understaffing and underpaid workers, meaning that almost all trans minors are going to be unable to access puberty blockers for extended periods of time, and they will do so under clinical conditions and nowhere else.
This is an attempt to eradicate trans youth.
A recent post on presidential candidate and convicted felon Donald Trump's website explains how he will, on Day One of being re-elected for president 2024:
- Ban all forms of HRT for any and all ages in the USA
- Pass a law allowing all "victims of child sexual mutilation" to sue doctors who have provided gender affirming care to trans people.
- Push an act of congress to make sure the only legally recognised genders in every state of the United States of America are male and female, and these are to be assigned at birth.
This is an attempt to eradicate trans people en masse.
This is an attempt to eradicate trans people from the US population entirely.
This is an attempt to make America as it was years ago before trans people were allowed to live publicly and freely.
I cannot imagine what the entire trans population of the US is feeling at these statements, especially under the conditions that Biden is running for president under. Biden is unfit for a state position, and should not be allowed to run for president. Biden is not likely to be elected president at all, as the recent presidential debates showed his mental decline and removed faith from the Liberal party he is the face of.
I urge almost all people who are trans to try and find safety in countries outside of the UK and US respectively, as both countries' governments have shown time and time again who they stand for and what agendas they will try and act upon - regardless of political alignment and personal politics. They will do what they can for power and for control, regardless of the toll it takes on the people of the countries they seek to "protect."
The changes the UK are making are devastating to not only trans youths, but to young people experiencing symptoms of early onset puberty that puts their health at risk. This does not just damage trans people, but others as well.
The changes Trump seeks to enforce in the US will cause countless deaths of trans people on a nationwide scale. These changes are catastrophic, and the effect that they would have upon the entire trans population of America would be devastating.
Please. Do everything that you can to stop this attack on our lives, our happiness, and our community. Do everything you can to prevent the trans healthcare crises that both the UK and US are imminently facing, because the changes will take years to revert and will have lasting effects on our rights and health for years to come.
Send letters and emails to your local representatives and any relevant government authorities, residents of the USA if you are legally allowed to, please do not stay quiet or neutral on this. If you are of the legal age to when the presidential election comes around; VOTE. Vote for anybody but Trump, ensure that you vote against Trump to save lives. DO NOT VOTE FOR TRUMP.
I hate that this is happening anywhere but two of the largest countries in the world with some of the most diverse populations of trans people are regressing at a rapid rate. Save trans lives and do your part, because this is the start of an attempt to eradicate us from the world, starting from the young people of our communities in the UK, and aiming to remove any hope of basic gender affirming care in the US.
Trust me when I say, this will not end here if these laws are allowed to pass through in any capacity. After they take away any hope for gender affirming care in the USA, they will begin criminalising trans lives entirely. If the UK is allowed to ban puberty blockers to "save childrens' lives" we will follow the US swiftly, and our lives will be in jeopardy just as the trans community of America's is right now.
Do not stay apolitical, do not let them kill us, do not give up.
I send love and appreciation to all trans people, and I believe that we can get through with this. We cannot give up and let them remove us from the world. Trans Lives Matter.

The Sera headcanon for Charlie's "gay/bi awakening" were because of her being among the "tall mommy" type of characters alongside Lilith and Carmilla.
Headcanon time (CWF Human AU) :
Fencing and martial arts are both thing very loved in the community, honor duels being a thing for many both lower and upper classes, which they monetize by having these duels happens in sports events and other things, they also try to keep it without deadly weapons.
Music and arts in general are loved in the town, and bring a lot of cash, though there's a lot of tensions between the parts of the population.
Lucia (Lute's original name) is the daughter of Agatha, who was a fierce supporter of the catholic angle of the opposition to the "communist scums" in the cold war with family in the military in Francoist Spain (since in CWF she likely would have been more affiliated with Spain), though Lucia learned Spanish dialects outside of the Castillan one thanks to Agatha's friends and their children in America, as these friends of Agatha came from the various Spanish-speaking American nations.
Lucia learned to take a chill pill from hanging out with Adam and her army-buddies during her military service.
Adam is kind of the town's golden boy, excellent military service, musically gifted and doing rock concerts but also more "prim and proper" gigs, referring to the angel side, which allowed a lot of the youth to enjoy rock since Adam wasn't seen as a thug.
On a personal level however, his life is a mess.
Lute got her nickname from Adam, who gave it due to her proficiency with the guitar while mocking her more old-fashioned background and attitude.
Lute hate Lucifer because he and his sins are low-key oligarchs of the town, doing stuff from "weird but not really harmful" to "the only reason why you're not in prison is that I can't find proofs".When it was discovered that Lute was pregnant, Agatha kicked her out, and Adam gave her shelter for a few weeks whole convincing Sera, who had a much more spacious residence, to take her in.
Sera, who secretly was pregnant with Emily, took pity and took Lute in, but Lute, who refused to be "some charity case", became kind of her secretary.
Lute hate Lilith, beside because of bias from Adam and jealousy of appearance, because it was during a meeting with the Morningstars then she gave birth to Vaggie, and Lilith and Sera helped with the birth since there was no time to call a doctor.
Lute hated feeling so vulnerable before Lilith of all people.
Adam here help out Lute monetarily, officially because Lute lacking monetary issues mean they can hang out more, unofficially, it's that+wanting to help for with Vaggie.
Adam is the music teacher, specifically guitar.
Despite knowing Adam is her granddaughter's father, because he and Eve were still technically married, Agatha see Lute as a home-wrecking slut
Despite being on the bad side of the town, Lucifer still held his classist beliefs, hence why he sent Charlie to Sera's Academy.
Charlie befriended Emily when they were 6, and properly met Vaggie when they were 14, once Charlie had her growth spurt, which coincided with when she started drifting away a bit from Lute, they were still tight, but Vaggie was softer and also more flexible ideologically, compared to the very much right-wing Lute who, beside her love of hanging out with her friends and relationship with Adam, was still mostly Agatha's precious daughter mentally.
Lute discovered Vaggie was gay due to seeing Vaggie and Emily kissing when the two girls were 14, since they wanted to know what it felt like and were the only ones with whom the other girl could feel comfortable enough trying to discover without breaking the friendship if they didn't had feelings, they're not close friends, but they have known each other too long not to be comfortable.
Lute is as straight as an arrow, but she have many gay and bi friends, and she didn't want to alienate her daughter, so she was supportive, that support on the matter being key to why Vaggie didn't stopped liking the more physical/combat things and didn't actively tried to distance herself from her mother.
I think Adam and Vaggie are quite awkward with each other here.
What's Sera and Emily's relationship like?
Beside Adam, Lucifer, Lute and Lilith (unless Lucifer doesn't tell her because it's too private), who know that Emily is actually Sera's daughter?
Okay, this is a lot to go over, so it's probably going to take me a while to fully respond to this...I'm also not going in order, just commenting on things as my brain decides to focus on them.
Lucia as Lute's birth name is honestly a really good pick, though I do imagine she was often called "Lucy" when she was young, something she dropped as an adult...which ended up helping a lot with avoiding confusion when she started having to associate with Lucifer, who's nickname was "Luci".
They do call an ambulance when Lute is giving birth to Vaggie, just because they do know that both Lute and the baby will need to be looked over by an actual doctor - especially with Vaggie still being born a few weeks early here - but because Lute's labor progresses very fast for a first pregnancy/delivery, and the nearest hospital is a fair distance away....Lilith and Sera know they've got to actually deliver the baby. With Lute remaining stubborn and refusing to fully accept she was in labor despite all the clear signs, insisting that there was no way the baby was coming now - she's still got six weeks left and she's done everything right, so she shouldn't be in labor already. It's not until the baby starts crowning, and particularly when Lilith using a compact mirror to basically make Lute have to see that, yes, she is having her baby right now, that she accepts what's happening and stops trying to fight against it.
Lute is both thankful for Sera giving her a place to stay, but also frustrated at needing the help. She insists she’s only staying until she has the baby and has saved up enough for an apartment for the two of them. But that takes some time, even with Adam sending her money to help. Partly because Lute hates accepting the money from Adam (or anyone) since she doesn’t like to feel like she’s a “charity case”. So she and Vaggie live with Sera and Emily until Vaggie’s just over two years old.
Congratulations, Agatha - you basically share the opinion of a seven year old. Though Cain doesn't think of Lute as a slut...at least when he's that young. But he does blame her (and Vaggie) for his parents splitting up, since he knew the basics of where babies came from when he met Lute during the time she lived with Adam after her mother kicked her out and cut her off; and when he found out Lute being there meant he was getting a new brother or sister...he basically just went like, "Okay, so this lady's having a baby with my dad, and that's why him and my mom don't live together anymore." As you can probably guess, he wasn't thrilled about Lute living in his dad's place, even if it was just temporary.
Adam and Vaggie's relationship is definitely a bit awkward here, since in this version of events, he does want to be more involved in her life from an earlier age (or at least be able to be open about the fact that he's her father) but Lute, partially because she did somewhat internalize some of the insults her mother threw at her when she found out she was pregnant, refuses to let him do either, not wanting to risk feeling judged and thought of as a slut who slept with and got knocked up by her friend pretty much as soon as he wasn't living with his wife anymore. His wife who had given birth to his sons, the eldest of whom was only about six and the youngest wasn't even a year old, so she also had the issue of feeling like she'd be judged for "taking the boys' father from them." But Adam does still spend time with Vaggie occasionally, usually when Lute had something she needed to do and wasn't able to find anyone else to watch Vaggie for a few hours.
Vaggie does eventually learn Adam is her father....thanks to a drunk Cain blurting it out during his 21st birthday party, which Vaggie was invited to due in part to the fact that Abel and Seth were allowed to each invite one of their own friends, and Seth chose Vaggie, since the two of them were actually friends. Even if they mostly just talked via texts and video chat once Vaggie started going to the academy.
Bonus: Lute teaching at the academy was a big part of why Vaggie was able to attend - children of the staff get free tuition, though they do still have to pay for things like uniforms. The promise that her daughter would be able to attend the school, which was considered pretty prestigious, is what convinced Lute to take the job when Sera offered it to her, despite initially refusing because taking a job offered by her "friend" felt too much like charity for her liking.
Sera and Emily have a pretty good relationship for Emily's childhood....but there starts to be some tension as Emily starts getting into her teenage years. Mostly because she starts to question how honest her "sister's" been with her for her whole life, particularly because Sera refuses to let her see any pictures of their parents, or really answer any of her questions about what they were like before they died. And Emily isn't stupid by any means, so all of that felt weird to her. And the feeling that Sera was keeping something from her caused Emily to start becoming more distant from her...while she tried figuring out the answers for herself.
A few other members of the staff at the Academy know Emily is actually Sera's daughter, but they swore to keep it secret. Outside of them, nobody knows the truth besides those you listed...and obviously the doctors who delivered Emily, and technically the people who filed her birth certificate.

Youth of George Washington
The youth of George Washington (1732-1799), the first President of the United States, remains the least understood chapter of his life, shrouded in folklore and myths. Yet the experiences of his youth, and the bond he felt toward his older half-brother Lawrence, shaped the man he was to become and helped put him on the path toward revolution and the presidency.

This article examines what is known about the lineage and youth of George Washington, from the first time his great-grandfather set foot on the shores of Virginia in 1657 until George's own coming of age in 1753, a year before the shots fired at the Battle of Fort Necessity changed the trajectory of his own life and, it can be argued, of world history.
Tall, strong, and somewhat physically awkward, the young George Washington grew up on a plantation just outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and moved to Mount Vernon as his brother's ward shortly after the death of their father. He became a land surveyor at the age of 16, measuring over 60,000 acres of land along the unmapped western frontier of Virginia. When Lawrence contracted a fatal case of tuberculosis, George accompanied him to Barbados, the only time he ever left the boundaries of the future United States; while there, he had a short but painful bout with smallpox, and for the first time came face to face with the military might of Great Britain. He had experienced much by his 21st birthday in 1753, although nothing could have prepared him for what was still to come.
Family & Parentage
The story of the Washington family in Virginia begins with a shipwreck. On 28 February 1657, the merchant vessel Seahorse of London ran aground on the shoals of the Potomac River during a storm; laden with precious tobacco, the ship had just embarked on its return voyage to England. Among its crew was a young Englishman named John Washington (b. 1633), who had taken to a life at sea after his father, an Anglican rector, had had his properties confiscated for his support of the Royalists during the English Civil Wars (1642-1651). As the crewmen went to work repairing the Seahorse of London, John Washington befriended several locals including Anne Pope, the daughter of a wealthy Maryland planter. It was perhaps out of love for Anne – or perhaps because he spied more opportunity in America than on the open seas – that induced John to stay behind after the crewmen sailed the repaired vessel back to England. John Washington married Anne Pope in late 1658, with the marriage ultimately producing five children.
Before his death in August 1677, John Washington made quite an impression on his adoptive home of Virginia. He had purchased or inherited upwards of 5,000 acres of land, upon which tobacco was planted and harvested by both enslaved Africans and white indentured servants. John's eldest son, Lawrence (b. 1659) was therefore left with a decent inheritance and was perfectly poised to enter public service. Before the age of 25, he served as both the Justice of the Peace and in the House of Burgesses, cementing the place of the Washington family among the colony's landed gentry. Around 1686, he married Mildred Warner, the daughter of the Speaker of the House of Burgesses, with whom he would have three children: John (1692-1746), Augustine (1694-1743), and Mildred (1698-1747). Lawrence died an early death in 1698, after which his widow remarried to an English merchant, George Gale, and moved her children to Whitehaven, England, before she died in 1701. Gale took care of the orphaned Washington children, enrolling the boys in the nearby grammar school at Appleby.
Augustine Washington, the middle child of Lawrence and Mildred, returned to Virginia sometime before he came of age in 1715 to claim his inheritance. Called 'Gus' by family and friends, he was tall, blond, and muscular, and was said to have been as gentle as he was strong. Upon his 21st birthday, he inherited 1,000 acres of land as well as six enslaved people; his marriage to Jane Butler that same year added another 1,700 acres to his already considerable amount of property. The couple settled on Gus' main plot of land at Pope's Creek in Westmoreland County, Virginia, where construction soon began on a home called Wakefield. It was here that Jane gave birth to three surviving children: Lawrence (1718-1752), Augustine, Jr. (1720-1762), and Jane (1722-1735).

Like his own father, Augustine entered public life, serving as Justice of the Peace and sheriff for Westmoreland County. He also continued buying up properties, including a tract of land near Accokeek Creek, 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Fredericksburg. It was on this land that rich deposits of iron were discovered in the late 1720s; looking to capitalize on this, Augustine began negotiating with the Principio Company, an association of British ironmasters and merchants, to construct an ironworks on the land. In 1729, Augustine went to England to finalize negotiations with his new business partners only to discover upon his return that his wife Jane had died. Distraught though he was, it was not customary for Virginian widowers to stay single for long, and, on 6 March 1731, Augustine Washington was remarried to 23-year-old Mary Ball.
