a very belated happy may day!!

i spent most of my afternoon painting zentangles in roughly the style of lizi phoenix on a bench in the college orchard, which is a gorgeous place (with too many bugs...)

it was a good time!

unfortunately this evening turned into a much less good time, mental-health-wise, so i forgot to post anything about may day until now.

i feel torn about all the "light half of the year" holidays until august - everyone is celebrating the start of spring and summer, while i'm struggling with the intense sensory issues caused by hot weather and feeling genuine panic at the realisation that summer is here. autumn's eve (1st august) is one of my favourite points on the wheel of the year because it means summer is finally ending...

that said, i really do like may day. i like the folk customs around it, i find the way in which the day has become so intertwined with labour rights really meaningful, and it's one of the points on the wheel of the year i feel the "pagan" part of "naturalistic pagan" most strongly.

idk, today's been a bit weird. maybe i'll get around to typing up some of my thoughts from my journal this afternoon, eventually.

Some sketchbook stuff.

Coming off a long dry spell over the summer, and trying to establish good habits, and don't feel confident enough to jump straight into making Zentangle or other pieces. So I decided to familiarize myself with the patterns I collected up back in the spring (somewhere around 275 of them!) and I'm drawing them alphabetically in my sketchbook. I'm only in the B's so it's gonna take a while.

Surprised at how much I'm liking ones I initially hate once they're in context though, like that central figure with the ribbons. Just goes to show that you can make appealing complexity from clumsy individual elements.
