Gundam goes Rugrats
Some of you might remember the Gundam Kitties.
It has come to my attention that there exists an alternative timeline, below the cut.
See, in the 1980's, there was a trend for making everything into baby versions, probably spurred by a marketing trend for baby dolls. There was muppet babies:

There were Tom and Jerry babies:

There were Flintstone babies:

Which brings us to the adorable genius of Ai Naniwa, Queen of Kawaii Gundam. There are apparently now, Gundam babies, where they're all going to preschool. Observe the tiny notes from older Zabi siblings.

(These are translated by Zeonic Scanlations, a website that I highly rec from a cursory glance. I'm not sure how to contact the owner since I don't use Twitter, but if he reaches out via someone else and wants me to remove it, I will.

In light of of the upcoming finale I’d like you share a little G Witch story with ya’ll. Well maybe story isn’t the right word, it’s more like... an incident.
So! Did you know The Witch from Mercury has a tie-in novel series? Well it does! It’s mostly a retelling of the events of the anime but there are a few new elements, including Miorine’s ex-best friend/possible first love (?) Yushura Mirzakhani. If you’ve ever seen art of some Saber looking girl now you know it’s actually a G Witch character and not a Fate crossover.
Tumblr media
(you can read Yushura’s chapter over at Zeonic Scanlations)
Apart from that one chapter, very little of the novels are translated, and at the time I was looking into them pretty much nothing was out there. Now I know machine translation would do a pretty... Terrible Job at dealing with a novel but whatever, I figured I’d give it try. I might be able to get the gist of it at the very least.
New Problem: The novel scans I have are just that: scans/jpgs, so it’s not like I can copy and paste the Japanese into a translator. However DeepL does let you give it a pdf, and while there’s a VERY small change it actually has the ability to pick out text from static images I once again figured it couldn’t hurt to see what happened.
And well, Things Sure Did Happen.

There are 56 pages of this.
Here are some favs my friends and I picked out while looking through the doc:

Honestly? 100x better than a machine translation of the novel. I think I actually got a glimmer of the very soul of the machine that translates. This is the Aerial of PDFs. It has a lot of strange quirks, including: apologising, escaping, trout, death, repeating phases. Which in the context of being a fucked up G Witch translation just makes it all the better.
Anyway! Here’s hoping we get more actual human translations of the novels in the future, but in the mean time this messed up version will remain unforgettable to me.

hi, sorry to bother you with translation inquiries when you have wips, but have you read the bunshun enta+ interviews and do you have plans to translate them? i appreciate all the work you've done for g-witch 🙏
Not a bother at all! I didn't know that GWitch was going to be featured in Shuukan Bunshun (since I've been moving away from Twitter and Zeonic Scanlation covers magazines well already), but the interview lineup seems pretty interesting.
So nope, haven't read it yet since it's physical only AFAIK... If there are scans available out there I'd certainly be down to TL, but otherwise I can order the issue in my next shipment from Japan.
Thanks for the heads up. 👍

HAMAN & GLEMY: JUST WHO ARE THEY?! We have covered the final episode at a glance, but many things are still shrouded in mystery… Many of you must have thought the same. Yes, for example, “Mineva (in ZZ) was just an ordinary girl,” her saying “I will not become like my sister,” and the “bloodline” mentioned by Glemy that meant Glemy and Ple are related? All of these mysteries were not made clear in the main story of ZZG, it seems. According to Director Tomino’s “Tomino Memo,” all of these settings had already been fleshed out. It is unclear why it was not depicted in the main story, but let us unravel the mystery once and for all. First of all, Haman’s identity. She is the younger sister of Zena (Mineva’s mother and) the wife of Dozle, the 3rd son of the Zabi family, and was Dozle’s lover. After losing Dozle to her sister, Haman swore to take revenge on the Zabi family. She became the guardian of Mineva only to use the restoration of the Zabi family as a cover to advance her own agenda. On the other hand, Glemy actually has no father or mother. He is a clone created from the sperm left behind by Gihren Zabi, the dictator, in the same way as Ple and Ple Two. This is why Glemy clung on to their blood relations and was convinced that he could mentally control Ple Two. Now, about Mineva. In the final episode, she confessed that she is only a body double. It appears that the real Mineva was taken away by Char during the time in between Z and ZZ. Is he also trying to revive the Zabi Family…? Now, we have an even deeper mystery on our hands.
GUNDAM-CLUB ’87-2 | Zeonic|Scanlations
Dear Tomino Memo,
God willing, this is the the stupidest thing I’ve read today, and hopefully the last time I read the words “Gihren Zabi“ and “sperm“ in the same sentence

A summary of the novel-original chapter from the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury novelization, featuring the novel-only (for now at least) character Yushura Mirzakhani

Further to the general page I linked previously, this discusses the Kuntala, a lower class from the late Universal Century. Previously, we were given to believe that they were literally cannibalised; human livestock. However, Tomino elaborates at length, that rather than this, they were metaphorically consumed by the higher classes. Interestingly, this chapter does not refer to the Regild Centruy, but to the Anno Domini era. When he ruminates so verbosely upon class, consumerism, and populism, one has to think that the veil here is thin indeed.
