“Dogtown, USA” is the opening piece in the new issue of Fluke. A story I wrote about being a young spectator of the skateboard scene that revolved around Paige Hearn’s ramp from 1985 into the next decade. I was lucky enough to watch legends such as Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Neil Blender, Jeff Grosso, Chris Miller and many more skate this ramp. There wasn’t a whole lot else going on at the time for a kid in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Aside from the arcade/pool hall across the street, of course. This zine is an updated version of an article I wrote for a friend's magazine just as we were finishing our final Undergraduate year of Jewellery & Metal Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), University of Dundee in 2014. In the run up to my Master's I figured it was a really good time to revamp this article, and breathe new life into it. “When I Was a Kid” from Fluke 3 (1993) is about my early childhood with my siblings and neighborhood friends, living next to some woods on Cherry Hill in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. “We had different hangouts, like the Rubber Tree. It was a really flexible limb that you could bounce up and down on. We had a fort in some old garage. Actually, it was a tiny room next to the garage. We built little bunk beds in it and had little tables and chairs. I remember telling my mom that I was running away and was going to buy an air conditioner for the fort. I never did. We kind of took that little room over from whoever it was owned by.
