“This place... Don’t you hear the wind, Celine? The way it howls and whips around the branches.” He lifted his head to address his sister, at last revealing that he was, to some extent, out of it. “The wolves’ call hide in the wind. Their bite latches on with an icy perseverance when I chop the firewood...”

I have naturally hairless legs and when I was young, I’d see commercials of women shaving their bare legs and I dunno if it’s because I’m stupid or something, but I thought I had to shave my legs anyway. I bought disposable razors but didn’t use them because there really was no hair and putting a razor to bare skin kinda goes against survival instincts so they sat in the medicine cabinet. 

I didn’t shave but I was convinced I had miniscule hair that people could see and for a long time, I wore stockings or leggings with my skirts to cover the “hair”, even after I realized that I have naturally hairless legs. If I wasn’t wearing those beneath a skirt, I was uncomfortable. It’s not until recently that I wore a skirt with bare legs for the first time. It’s just something I wanted to air out.

Day 27 of @inception30daychallenge: A headcanon about dreamshare.

We all know frequent use hinders a users ability to dream outside of the PASIV, but I think use easily leads to other sleep issues like insomnia, sleepwalking, night terrors, and hypnagogia. I think the early, military version of the drug was much, much nastier in terms of side effects --- and although in present Inception it’s much more refined, it’s still unregulated --- there are common side effects upon waking for most users - frequent or not - such as migraines and nausea, dizziness, mood disturbance, vision disturbance, etc. But they have to dose up their mark(s) with this stuff, it can’t leave them obviously worse for wear or addicted -- otherwise it’d be a telltale sign of extraction/foul play. And same goes with dreamers. They avoid the drug as much as possible. It’s like drinking a cheap bottle of red wine. No one likes that. 

Like, as amazing as somnacin is for the “pure creation” of dreams, I think the side effects often keep most dreamers from going too crazy with it. Like alcohol. Most people can keep it to the job. Recreational dreaming aint worth the awful hangover and blues, but on an infrequent basis for a handsome paycheque, they will tolerate it. But the sleep disorders linger. Ariadne sleepwalks. Cobb sleeptalks. Eames sleep-eats. Nash is an insomiac.

In the day after they lost the battle of Deshaan they sat together around a wooden table and ate breakfast in silence. On the matter of the disaster only the clinking of spoons on ceramic was exchanged between them. They sat in the dining hall of Fort Ebonheart, surrounded by tall indigo columns that curved elegantly inwards towards the pointed roof, made badly into a facsimile of something Nordic with banners and wooden furniture cluttering the walls, but its merish origins nonetheless showing through. No guards attended them, no servants dared to surround them, even the racket of the army camped beyond the fort could not be heard. Their grief bore no distraction-- only quiet breaths, guttering candles, thin ashy sunlight through triangular glass windows, bouquets of dried Skyrim-flowers, the stench of medicinal ointment and volcanic dust, the scraping of silver on bowl, the occasional wet stirring of porridge.

Jurgen, for one, found the silence a welcome reprieve. Until--

"You know," Barfok said loudly, breaking the peace, "I think that this world is the mad dream of a dead god."

All clinking of cutlery stopped. The other four Tongues raised their heads to stare at her.

Barfok was undeterred. "Think about it," she said, scooping up a glob of porridge. "Nothing in this life makes sense, it's all a joke. Things just happen for no reason, the most absurd things, and everyone just acts like it's normal, the way that happens in a dream. And if you think hard enough about it you get the power to change it to your whim. It's all a dream."

"Barfok," Jurgen said with a grimace, "We are eating breakfast."

"But I'm not wrong, am I?" Barfok protested, looking to the other Tongues for support. Ysmir, tall and hunched over with his long hair still hanging in battle-braids, looked away from her; Chemua, neck wrapped in bandages and corpseish purple rings sunken around his eyes, stared haggardly at her in silence; Bhag was too busy shoveling oatmeal into his mouth for comment.

"Barfok," Jurgen repeated himself, speaking through his teeth, "Eat your food."

"We change it with the thu'um," Bhag pointed out. His voice came thickly through a mouthful of oatmeal. "And sometimes people talk in their sleep. Is that why, Barfok? The thu'um is us talking in our sleep?"

"Aye!" Barfok grinned cheerfully, "That's a great point, Bhag."

"You know?" Bhag continued, "If you talk to a sleep-talker in their sleep, they'll talk back. Makes them dream different, too. Just like the thu'um."

"Exactly!"

"Jurgen," Bhag turned to him, "You sleeptalk?"

Jurgen wiped a small glob of oatmeal from his cheek. "Why don't we swallow before we speak, how about? Can we do that, Bhag?"

Bhag shoved another spoonful of oatmeal into his mouth. "You think Barfok's right, Jurgen?"

The question had lobbed a small projectile of oatmeal right at Jurgen's face; it slid down his eyebrow, but, Kyne's blessing, he managed to wipe it away before it hit his eye. Jurgen took a very deep breath.

Now all the Tongues were looking at him, awaiting his decree.

"I think it... is an interesting idea," Jurgen said, with strained diplomacy, "But it begs the question: if life is a dream, who is doing the dreaming? It cannot be Shor, who is dead, nor--"

The unexpected interruption, in a voice hoarse and cracking like dead wood, shocked everyone. Chemua had not spoken once since the disaster of last night's battle. Nor did he deign to look at them, keeping his head bowed so his long red hair obscured his face, and his sullen gaze remained on the untouched bowl in front of him.

"Qethsegolle," he repeated in a mutter. "Bones of the earth. They're the dreamers."

"That's stupid," said Barfok immediately. "How can many people be having the same dream all at once?"

"Look at the evidence, Barfok! The dwarves figured out how to control the qethsegolle with their music, how else did they win last night? Singing like we do." Chemua had spoken with anger, but it lasted only a moment; he poked listlessly at his oatmeal, no conviction behind his argument. “And they do it better.” 

"They take creation slave," Ysmir whispered, the second surprise in their debate-- surprising not only for his contribution, but for the clear hatred within his muted voice. "They are profane."

"The qethsegolle aren't mad," Barfok protested, scooping up another heaping glob of oatmeal as she did so. "You all should know that! Do we not talk with them? Who else do we speak to when meditating? Is our thu'um not the debate that convinces them? The qethsegolle are rational, they listen to arguments-- you ever argue with a dreamer? It doesn’t work! And how can we convince the qethsegolle of anything if they're asleep? So it can't be the qethsegolle dreaming, it just can't."

"Who created the earth-bones?" asked Bhag.

"Shor--" Ysmir started.

"Anu?" Chemua said at the same time.

The reaction was immediate: Barfok lobbed her spoonful of oatmeal in Chemua's direction, sending it flying over his head; Bhag leaned over, punched him in the shoulder, and declared, contemptuously: "You elf!"

With a snarl, Chemua elbowed Bhag hard in the sternum, and then, in a huff, rose and stalked away from the table. The others ignored him as he took up position broodingly by a nearby window. Even Bhag, despite the blow, was unperturbed: he simply pulled Chemua’s abandoned bowl of oatmeal over and dug in.

"Whoever created the qethsegolle," Barfok declared, "That's the madman who's dreaming."

“Shor is not mad,” Ysmir whispered offendedly, making the candles on the table gutter. 

“But Alduin is mad. Or is it Akatosh who’s mad? Auri-el? Chemua, which one’s the elf god?” 

“Fetch yourself, Barfok.” 

“Alduin is not Auri-el.” 

“Ysmir, we’ve talked about this, if Tsun is Trinimac then--” 

"Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Barfok," Jurgen said dryly. "Always the philosopher."

"Thank you!" At the very least, Barfok had finished off her oatmeal-- she was now scraping the bottom of her bowl to create the annoying hideous grating of metal on stone. “Now, tell Ysmir that Alduin is Auri-el.” 

“Barfok--”

"Hoaga meyz," Chemua interrupted them, turning away from the window. “Ko bah Thuru Hoaga meyz.”  He was grimacing.

“Son of a bitch,” Jurgen whispered. 

Only Barfok seemed unperturbed by this news; she rose to her feet, shoving her hands into the pockets of her trousers and walking to the window too. “Ko bah, neben lok, voth bahlok? Eh?” With a little laugh, she elbowed Chemua on the arm. “He’s going to kill you.” 

“If he does, I’m taking you with me.” 

"Not fair! Ysmir lost the battle too, why don't you take down Ysmir?"

"Nobody is killing anyone," Jurgen interrupted her, rising from his chair. He hadn’t even gotten to finish his breakfast, he noticed with disdain, and his temples were beginning to sting with the hints of a headache. "I'll go meet him."

Chemua remained facing the window, Bhag stayed at the table eating the leftovers, and even Ysmir, usually unshakeable, sat very still with his head bowed. Only Barfok seemed to hear Jurgen’s declaration, and she turned around, giving him a plaintive frown. 

"Well, it doesn’t matter, anyway,” said she. “Does it? If he tries to kill me, I'll just wake up from the dream."

Me: Here we go, what did I say?

My friend: "Call me back later, I am sleeping now."

he’s usually a lucid dreamer, fun fact. usually! he doesn’t do it on purpose. he’ll get omens in dreams or end up in people’s psyches in his dreaming (especially if there’s something amiss, eg curses, in their head, and they’re close in proximity to him). otherwise he just kinda wanders around in his dreamscape.

when he’s not lucid but still dreaming, or when he’s dreaming of something particularly unpleasant, he does tend to sleeptalk. more specifically, he can and has occasionally ended up sleep casting. this goes about as well as one can expect. he has gotten himself wrapped up in his own spellwork by mistake and been extremely confused why the hell his door is coated in sealing spells when he wakes up. that sort of thing.

it doesn’t happen often now, mostly because there’s less things where he’s the one who’s got to personally deal with them, but while he was actively on the court it wasn’t unheard of.

1. Disney

i’ve been a huge disney lover since i was little, and that’ll never go away. fuck anyone who says disney is just for kids. watching it now, not only gives me a sense of nostalgia, but it reminds me of a time when i truly felt hopeful and carefree.

2. Dogs

i have a 7 yr old dog named Milo and i love him with my whole heart. he’s an adorable lil yorkiepoo (yorkie/poodle mix), but don’t let his cuteness fool you. he’s loud, messy, and spoiled, but i love him anyway 🥰

3. Dance

i have a secret love for dancing, “secret” meaning no one knows how much i love watching dance yt videos and practicing choreography in my room. the most public i’ve been is kicking my whole family’s ass in Just Dance lol. i guess it makes sense because growing up in a hispanic household, we would dance together at every party 😂

4. Daydreamer

i’ve always been a dreamer, constantly wishing for my ideal life. i should be trying my best to turn those dreams into actions, but if i’m being honest, reality scares me. if i live in my head, i have complete control, without fear and anxiety. i can go wherever i want to go and have friends that i can count on. i can be who i truly want to be.

I feel like Oda Sakunosuke is such an underrated character.

Besides the fact that he’s able to single-handedly influence Dazai away from the mafia and still remain an influence to him even after death (which is impressive in its own right), Oda is such a great character on his own.

A guy trying to turn his life around from a dark past isn’t anything new, but I find the reason why he decided to turn his life around so compelling. It’s simply because he wanted to be a writer. It’s so simple that it’s beautiful. I guess part of the reason why I love Oda is because I share the same dream and I felt an immense sadness when he never managed to even start to fulfill it, not only because his life ended prematurely, but because it meant he never stopped seeing himself as a killer.

Especially the part where the children were killed in front of him, after watching it a second time, I feel like I might understand why he went to die. I feel like it wasn’t just about revenge when he willingly went to Gide.

Oda always believed that if he stopped killing, he could start understanding human life, which would allow him to write it in a book. However, I think when the children were killed, he began to realize that it wasn’t enough that he himself didn’t kill. Just by mere connection to the wrong people, he got others killed; that no matter what he did, as long as he had those connections, he could never stop killing, even if indirectly. He can never be a writer and I think that broke him. 

His death was probably exactly what Oda thought he deserved and I think part of the reason he understands Dazai so much is because he was looking for a reason to live as well. The difference between them is that Oda found one but when he realized he couldn’t be a writer, he no longer had a reason to live, especially not when he still finds himself capable of killing out of vengeance. Having seen both sides of good and evil, he’s able to tell Dazai which life he found worth living. In the end, even when things ended up as it did, Oda didn’t regret the way he lived.

Honestly, I think Oda’s fight should’ve had more sad and somber music. I was watching a good man go to his grave and break the one vow he made to himself for the sake of a simple dream he held above all else. I mourned to see the way that dream shattered to him.

He wasn’t perfect, but Oda was complex and he tried his best. Who doesn’t love a character like that?

Addy is a cuddly sleeper, though she loves her huge bed because it has so much room.

Addy’s mind is always on, so it takes her a while to fall asleep. She usually reads before bed to try to calm her mind down. She’s also a very vivid dreamer so she does toss and turn sometimes.

Addy doesn’t snore or sleepwalk, but she has been known to talk in her sleep. Especially when she’s dreaming.

Concerning Shinsou Hitoshi’s Quirk

Was saving this (still using this) theory for a fanfiction, but it serves as a good canon theory fodder too -- and I’ve already lagged behind in updates and it’s not fair to hold the theory off too long. I am of the belief that there is more to Shinsou Hitoshi’s quirk - or, that it has been misdiagnosed. So, let’s go through this logically!

What We Know

Shinsou has a tired demeanor, which may or may not be related to his quirk. Hooded eyelids, eye-bags, mild slouch, some sluggishness ... this could simply be a character design, but considering he’s one of the few with eye-bags, it’s more likely to be quirk-related.

He needs a verbal response to his own provocations for his quirk to function.

He can do it for a relatively extended period of time. At least for ten minutes at a time - enough to last the Calvary battle, and to multiple individuals - as seen in both the race and the Calvary battle:

He can manipulate one’s actions but not one’s words, and their actions are sluggish and fairly simple. He also seems to have to keep his commands simple and short. It’s something relatively noticeable whenever he implements his quirk, this his commands are never extremely difficult to follow:

A punch or some external force can actively knock someone out of his quirks’ control. And, some people do remember what is going on while under the control, whereas others do not. For example, Ojirou did not remember until he was disturbed:

But it becomes clear that Izuku does remember what happened before an external force was used on him. Otherwise he would have no memory of the vision of previous OfA users. This could be the influence of OfA as a quirk itself, but it does not have to be.

What It Boils Down To

What Makes Sense

That which is above does not add up to brainwashing. Brainwashing is, by definition:

“[to] make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure”

Brainwashing would imply that the commands would have greater permanence or be effective beyond the immediate control. It comes with greater complexities, and longer-lasting effects.

Common steps in brainwashing, as noted by psychologist Robert Jay Lifton, include:

assault on identity

guilt

self-betrayal

breaking point

leniency

compulsion to confess

channeling of guilt

releasing of guilt

progress and harmony

final confession and rebirth

But Hitoshi has implemented none of these steps against any individuals: brainwashing is a more conscious ordeal than an unconscious one.

Logically, it means that his quirk is not brainwashing. Instead, it is closer to sleepwalking because of its unconscious and impermanent nature.

Or, at least, the ability to cause others to sleepwalk. So, let’s talk sleepwalking, which is by definition:

“walk around and sometimes perform other actions while asleep”

Hitoshi victims perform simple tasks while under his control, lacking verbal response and permanence in the thereafter of his control. The above shows Izuku walking because of a particular command, but the logic behind this is not not just because that the command was to turn around and walk out-of-bounds. It’s that everything Hitoshi does in utilizing his quirk matches the symptoms of sleepwalking, which include:

get out of bed and walk around

Hitoshi’s victims can walk around, though it is a slow crawl / mechanical set of movements.

have a glazed, glassy-eyed expression

Izuku is not the only character to have had the glossy-eyed look when under Shinsou Hitoshi’s control.

not respond or communicate with others

be difficult to wake up during an episode

be disoriented or confused for a short time after being awakened

not remembering the episode in the morning

The four points above explain the effects that all of his victims have had in some form or another. None of his victims have been able to communicate or easily wake themselves from an episode, and anyone who has sleepwalked usually needs a punch or hit of some kind to snap out of it. Sleepwalking (and its sibling, sleeptalking) is simple-task-based, and sleeptalking is rarely more than five words strung together. Hitoshi likely cannot give complex (or too many) commands to someone, and his victims likely cannot perform complex tasks. In essence, he is using sleeptalking to control someone’s sleepwalking, the “sleeptalking” being his quirks’ way of getting in control over someone’s actions.

Hitoshi loses all control and influence when the dreaming / sleepwalking ends; if it was brainwashing, Izuku would have continued to walk out-of-bounds even after regaining control.

Extremely few are able to remember what happens during sleepwalking, but active dreamers are more likely to remember sleepwalking. Considering Izuku’s imagination and innovative skills, I would not be surprised if he is an active-dreamer, in which he has some control over his dreams and sleepwalking decisions. This explains why he remembers it from the moment he went under, and remembers it even after coming out (the vision) while Ojirou could only remember what came after being bumped by another team (and not during). These two points above are likely the blow-back Hitoshi faces for using his quirk: his tired demeanor, the eye-bags, and abrasive attitude are all good indications of poor sleeping habits. Sleepwalking also occurs during the REM sleep stages, which is the level of sleep needed to feel well-rested (and Hitoshi does not look well-rested): this may also explain his absurd time limits in controlling people, for at least ten minutes and on multiple individuals, because REM sleep cycles last for 90 - 100 minutes at a time. This could be the maximum he can do on any one individual at a time, or at least the maximum time he can divide up among those he does have under his control.

The Plot-Contributing Point of it Being Sleepwalking?

By and large psychological. If you believed your quirk was brainwashing for most of your life, you likely would not have tested it to any extent. Certainly not to an extent where you figure out the confines of your quirks’ abilities are closer to something else. It would provide immense relief for Shinsou Hitoshi to learn that his quirk isn’t as mind-altering as originally interpreted to be, and likely serve as an opening for him to become a better hero.

Further Evidence

Can I just add in the soundtrack from the anime for a passing moment? When I first heard this, my instinct wasn’t that it was brainwashing. The use of lullabies and scattered voices, creepy as they are, alludes to sleep-related themes.
